Turner Carroll Gallery is proud to present our landmark exhibition "Burned: Women and Fire," a culmination of many years of research and observations in contemporary art. This cogent body of work by international women artists is connected by a brilliantly fresh approach to storytelling, materials, and aesthetics; further tied together by gender.
Fire is one of the most potent symbols in human history. It purifies, illuminates, destroys, and transforms. Fire is ingrained in women’s collective memory. Fire represents women’s power and their torture. In women’s own hands, it is their independent creative spark; in the hands of those who want to suppress them it can destroy their very lives. "Burned: Women and Fire" features artists who—like the alchemical Phoenix who burns and rises from the ashes anew—integrate their collective experience with fire and burning to create their art.
