Daruma (達磨) is a traditional Japanese doll modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism.

It is usually made of papier-mâché, round in shape, and weighted at the bottom so that it always returns to an upright position when tilted — symbolizing perseverance and resilience (“fall down seven times, stand up eight”).

Daruma dolls are most commonly painted red, with large white eyes.

When someone sets a goal, they color in one of the blank eyes while making a wish or resolution. Once the goal is achieved, they fill in the other eye to complete the doll, celebrating success.

Daruma is often kept in homes, temples, and offices as a talisman for good luck, determination, and the fulfillment of wishes. だるま（達磨） は、禅宗の開祖である 達磨大師（ボーディダルマ） をかた どった、日本の伝統的な縁起物の人形です。紙や木などで作られ、丸い形をし ており、底に重りが入っているため、倒しても必ず起き上がるようになっていま す。これには「七転び八起き」ということわざに象徴される、忍耐や不屈の精 神の意味が込められています。一般的に赤く塗られ、白い大きな目をしていま す。願いごとや目標を立てるときに片方の目を描き入れ、成就したらもう片方 の目を入れて完成させるのが習わしです。だるまは、家庭や寺院、オフィスな どに置かれ、開運・目標達成・忍耐の象徴として親しまれています。
