EDITOR’S LETTER My goodness, it’s May! Insert almost-certainly-by-now-totally-outdated joke about Theresa May and Brexit. Anyway… here are some books!

Diving straight in with fiction we encounter Juliet the Maniac (p4, Melville House, 9781612197593, p/b, £12.99), a confident and raw debut from a talented new novelist Juliet Escoria, which portraying the unravelling of teenage girl as she plunges into self-destruction. Meanwhile Beside Myself (p5, Text, 9781911231257, p/b, £10.99) by Sasha Marianna Salzmann is a disturbing story of a family across four generations, with one woman’s search for her twin brother – and her own identity – at its heart. And in Paolo Maurensig’s A Devil Comes to Town (p6, World Editions, 9781642860139, p/b, £9.99) foxes infected with wild rabies run through the woods and only the local priest notices the omens as the risky ventures of a village full of aspiring writers come under the sway of a devious publisher. Sequels are all the rage in crime fiction for this month! In Two Minds (p7, Dome Press, 9781912534180, p/b, £8.99) returns us to mid1800s Wales in the second instalment of Alis Hawkins’ Teifi Valley Coroner series, where the past comes back to haunt Harry. A third outing for the Bastards of Pizzofalcone from Maurizio de Giovanni sees chill winds rise, political hijinks,

and murder on the streets of Naples in Cold For the Bastards of Pizzofalcone (p7, Europa, 9781787701618, p/b, £13.99). The follow-up to sensational debut The Widows of Malabar Hill by Sujata Massey is The Satapur Moonstone (p8, Soho, 9781616959098, h/b, £18.99), in which we return to the lush Indian mountains as India’s only female lawyer, Perveen Mistry, walks into a dangerous trap… Over in graphic novels first up we have The Book of Sarah (p16, Myriad, 9781908434517, h/b, £19.99). In the bible the ‘Book of Sarah’ is missing, so artist Sarah Lightman sets out to make her own: questioning religion, family, motherhood and what it takes to be an artist in this quietly subversive visual

LIFE OF DAVID HOCKNEY

A Novel Cusset, Catherine & Fagan, Teresa (trans)

A compelling hybrid of novel and biography, Life of David Hockney offers an accessible overview of the painter who shook the world of art with a vitality and freedom that neither heartbreak nor illness nor loss could corrode. Born in 1937 in Bradford, David Hockney had to fight to become an artist. After leaving for the Royal College of Art in London, his career flourished, but he continued to struggle with a sense of not belonging, because of his homosexuality, which had yet to be decriminalised, and his inclination for a figurative style of art not sufficiently ‘contemporary’ to be valued. Trips to New York and California - where he would live for many years and paint his iconic swimming pools - introduced him to new scenes and new loves, beginning a journey that would take him through the fraught years of the AIDS epidemic. KEY SELLING POINTS • Through Hockney’s life, Catherine Cusset brings readers through the glamorous art world of New York, London, and LA. • Part of a growing wave of LGBTQ art and literature, joining Call Me By Your Name and A Little Life. • Hockney is hugely popular, with over half a million tickets sold to his retrospective at the Tate in 2017. • There is a Hockney exhibition running until May 2020 at Salts Mills in West Yorkshire. • Biofiction featuring well-known artists and writers continues to be extremely popular. NUKING THE MOON

And Other Intelligence Schemes and Military Plots Left on the Drawing Board Houghton, Vince

In Nuking the Moon, intelligence historian Vince Houghton shows us that what didn’t happen is just as illuminating as what did. During WWII and the Cold War, for every Argo or Operation Mincemeat there were countless abandoned plans. Some are laughable, like the US Navy’s plan to turn bats into flying firebombs; some are implausible, like the Kennedy administration’s plan to build a command centre 4,000 feet underground; and some are legitimately terrifying, like the cornucopia of US plans to justify attacking Cuba. KEY SELLING POINTS • Houghton is a fresh new voice in intelligence history. • The author also hosts Spycast, the Spy Museum’s hugely popular podcast. • With our current political climate, these are essential topics once more. • Author is regularly interviewed in places like the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and NPR. TIP OF THE ICEBERG

My 3,000-Mile Journey Around Wild Alaska, the Last Great American Frontier Adams, Mark

In 1899, railroad magnate Edward H. Harriman organised a most unusual summer voyage to the wilds of Alaska: He converted a steamship into a luxury ‘floating university,’ populated by some of America’s best and brightest scientists and writers, including the anti-capitalist eco-prophet John Muir. More than a hundred years later, Mark Adams sets out to retrace the 1899 expedition. Along the way, he encounters dozens of unusual characters (and a couple of very hungry bears) and investigates how lessons learned in 1899 might relate to Alaska’s current struggles in adapting to climate change.
