EDITOR’S LETTER July is here! How on earth did that happen?! The year might have sped by, but our books are here to stay. Let’s get cracking… Those looking for a discerning summer read would do well to seek out The Experimentalist (p4; Dome Press, 9781999855925, p/b, £8.99). With echoes of John Fowles and Donna Tartt, this engaging and disturbing novel explores stolen identity and the post-truth world through orphaned Marie’s dark family history. We’re also highly excited for The Incendiaries (p5; Riverhead, 9780735213890, h/b, £18.99) by Korean-American author R. O. Kwon – a fractured love story and a brilliant examination of the minds of extremist terrorists, and of what can happen to people who lose what they love most.

Moving on to children’s books and it’s hard to believe it has been 25 years since The Nightmare Before Christmas came out! Commemorating this historic occasion is Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas: ReadAlong Story Book and CD (p21; Disney Press, 9781368022286, p/b & cd, £6.99). This read-along book and audio cd are perfect for kids who are too young to have loved the film first time round, and ideal for their parents who weren’t. Meanwhile in teen fiction we have Zen and Gone (p23; Soho Press, 9781616958572, h/b, £14.99) – the story of a girl’s harrowing search for her missing younger sister, as well as her own search for self. Sifting into non-fiction and we are thoroughly looking forward to The Beat Scene (p23; Reel Art Press, 9781909526266, h/b, £29.95), an extraordinary collection of unseen photographs of the Beat Generation and the first book ever published with colour shots of the most infamous Beats, including Kerouac and Ginsberg. Wow.

Short stories are back in a big way: yay! Identity (p6; New Internationalist, 9781780264592, p/b, £8.99) is the annual anthology from Short Story Day Africa, containing the best and most exciting new writing from the African continent. This year’s theme is identity – with a particular focus on gender and sexuality. Cuban fiction is also on the up, so we bring you Condomnauts (p9; Restless Books, 9781632061867, p/b, £13.99) – a hilarious space opera from Cuba’s premiere science-fiction author, Yoss. In graphic novels Escaping War and Waves: Encounters with Syrian Refugees (p17; Myriad Editions, 9781912408122, h/b, £19.99) looks set to be one of the most significant non-fiction works of the year. Reportage illustrator Olivier Kugler’s compelling series of drawings documents the experiences of Syrian refugees he met in Iraqi Kurdistan, Greece, France, Germany, Switzerland and England, mostly on assignment for Médecins Sans Frontières. Changing tack… Madame Cat #1 (p17; Life Drawn, 9781594658136, p/b, £9.99) is a series of hilarious snap-shots into the life of a cat who is the queen of her home.

Next up we have a real eyebrow raiser: The Story of Shit (p25; Text Publishing Company, 9781925355178, p/b, £12.99). Yes, it will do exactly what it says on the cover, but this book is also a wonderfully wry, erudite and altogether charming investigation into the most rarely discussed of bodily functions! And, finally, we bring you The Marginalized Majority: Claiming Our Power in PostTruth America (p26; Melville House, 9781612196992, p/b, £14.99). A hugely important book for our times, from progressive US journalist Onnesha Roychoudhuri, which delivers a plan not to just survive but also offers a way to push back in Trump’s America and worldwide. So there you have it: our month in books in a nutshell! Enjoy your July reading and before you know it we will be back, with a vengeance, in August.

PLAGUE, THE

ADDRESS, THE

At first it’s the dead rats; they start dying in cataclysmic numbers, followed by other city creatures. Then people begin experiencing flu-like symptoms as well as swellings in their lymph nodes. The masses react in disbelief when the official diagnosis comes in and later, when a quarantine is imposed on the increasingly terrified city. Inspired by Albert Camus’ classic 1947 novel, Kevin Chong’s The Plague follows Dr. Bernard Rieux’s attempts to fight the treatment-resistant disease and find meaning in suffering.

Sara, a servant in 1884 is given the opportunity to move to America and manage the grand New York apartment house, The Dakota. It offers her a world of possibility, including being close to the Dakota’s famous architect, Theo. A hundred years later in 1984, interior designer Bailey is fresh out of rehab and is tasked with helping her cousin redesign her apartment in the famous Dakota. Once there, Bailey learns all about the building’s history, including its architect Theo, and the mad woman named Sara who stabbed him to death.
