Kicking Off a New Era: The Red Shield’s Revived Soccer Program
BY STAFF REPORTS
Red Shield
Soccer has always been a community favorite at the Red Shield Community Center, and now, thanks to the passion and dedication of volunteers, the program is making a triumphant return to the indoor gym. This revival is more than just a reintroduction—it’s the start of a movement to make soccer a permanent, year-round fixture in
Red Shield’s sports offerings.
Leading the charge are the Red Shield’s new Athletic Coordinators, Sergio Velasquez and PJ Cervantes, whose enthusiasm and vision are breathing fresh life into the program. Together with committed volunteers, they’re bringing an exciting lineup of soccer clinics, camps, and even a small indoor league to the center.
What’s particularly inspiring is the role of community engagement in this resurgence. Former Red Shield youth participant Maribel Ferrer, along with her friend Hannah Derby, played a vital role in reigniting interest in soccer. Their efforts exemplify the lasting impact of the Red Shield’s mission—building connections and creating opportunities that echo for generations.
As summer and winter approach, soccer fans can look forward to announcements about upcoming clinics, camps, and leagues. Whether you’re honing your skills or just enjoying the thrill of the game, the Red Shield’s soccer program is ready to welcome you back to the field. Let’s kick off this exciting chapter together!

Back on the Court: The Red Shield’s Revitalized Basketball Program
BY STAFF REPORTS Red Shield
The sound of sneakers squeaking on polished wood has returned to the Red Shield Community Center, marking the exciting revival of its beloved basketball leagues! While pick-up games, clinics, and camps have their charm, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of league play. Thanks to the dedication of Red Shield staff and volunteers, the basketball winter league now runs from November through January, bringing high-energy coed competition to the community. Each week, youth teams hit the court, working their way toward semi-finals and the exhilarating league championship. This past year has seen the basketball program soar to new heights. Beyond the leagues, the Red Shield now hosts an
array of activities to engage basketball enthusiasts of all ages, including expanded open gym hours, adult open gym sessions, and skill-building clinics and camps for youth. The program continues to grow, offering more opportunities for players to refine their game and build community connections.
As summer approaches, anticipation is building for the Red Shield’s upcoming basketball league. It promises to be another season of skill-building, camaraderie, and plenty of fun for the young athletes who take part. Whether they’re perfecting their jump shot or forming lifelong friendships, these players embody the spirit of teamwork and growth that the Red Shield is proud to foster. Keep an eye out for details—you won’t want to miss the action this summer!
Open Gym Basketball in Modesto: Reviving a Tradition
BY CAPTAIN CHRISTOPHER KIM
Basketball has always been significant in Modesto, uniting individuals of all ages and backgrounds. When I arrived in July 2024, I quickly recognized the community’s strong connection to the sport and the need for increased access, especially through open gym basketball.
I discovered that my predecessor had established a successful open gym basketball program at the Red Shield, which provided a free space for players of all skill levels. Unfortunately, the program was discontinued after the previous leaders left, creating a gap in the community. Realizing its importance, I was determined to bring it back.
In January 2025, we relaunched open gym basketball on Wednesday and Friday evenings from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The response was fantastic, with an average of 25 players on Wednesdays and 20 on Fridays. Beyond providing a place to play, open gym basketball encourages mentorship, teamwork, and community engagement. Many participants cherish having a
welcoming environment to return to.
Looking ahead, we aim to expand open gym basketball and possibly introduce other sports, creating more opportunities for community connection through athletics. Sports unite communities, and we are excited about the program’s future in Modesto.
Making Waves: The Red Shield’s Lifesaving Aquatic Program
BY STAFF REPORTS Red Shield
Since its founding in 1969, the Red Shield Community Center has been a beacon of hope and a safe haven for Stanislaus community members, particularly its children and youth. From its inception, the center’s mission has been clear: meet the needs of the community while providing a secure and supportive environment. Over the decades, one thing remains timeless—the lifesaving importance of water safety and swimming skills.
Central to the Red Shield’s legacy is its beautiful swimming pool, a standout feature since day one. Spanning a history of over 55 years, the pool has continuously provided essential aquatic services and recreational opportunities for the community. Today, it remains a vital
hub for learning, fitness, and summer fun, with programs designed for everyone—from tiny tots to seasoned swimmers.
The Red Shield’s aquatic program is more than just swimming lessons. Each summer, individuals not only learn how to swim but also gain water safety skills that can save lives. These lessons have empowered people to act decisively in waterrelated emergencies, whether at private gatherings, reservoirs, or other

potentially risky situations. Beyond lessons, the pool hosts a variety of activities, including aquatic fitness classes, Jr. Lifeguard training, swim teams, public and lap swimming sessions, and rentals for community and school groups. For families, the pool transforms into a summer oasis, offering a reprieve from the Central Valley’s intense heat. With a shallow end at 3 feet, a deep end reaching 9 feet, and amenities like a water slide and volleyball net
for special events, it’s a beloved space for relaxation and connection.
The Red Shield’s pool isn’t just a place to swim; it’s a cornerstone of community life, blending safety, health, and happiness. This summer, make a splash—check out the aquatic program schedule and discover all that the Red Shield has to offer!
We are proud to support the Red Shield Center. Every year, G3 and our employees join forces to make a real difference in the community. Contributing to over 50 charities locally and nationwide, we donate our time and financial support in a variety of ways. As a family-owned company, we know the family and community go hand-in-hand.
Red Shield Celebrates 55 Years of Youth Baseball and Softball
BY STAFF REPORTS
Red Shield
In 2025, the Red Shield proudly celebrates 55 years of offering youth baseball and softball to the local community. Though the years have passed, the love for the game remains as strong as ever.
Serving children ages 4 to 15, the Red Shield continues to provide quality, accessible programming that brings families together through America’s favorite pastime. Each season, new families join the league for the first time, while others return—this time as parents—watching their own children play on the same fields they once did. It’s a cycle that speaks to the lasting impact of the Red Shield’s program, creating memories that span generations.
The Red Shield participates in the Stanislaus County Recreational League, which allows teams to play both home and away games throughout the region. Depending on the division, teams face opponents from Modesto, Waterford, Patterson, Hughson, and even Ripon.
For many children, this is their first experience with the sport. For others, it’s an opportunity to mentor newer players and build confidence through teamwork and encouragement. And for some, it’s a chance to sharpen competitive skills as they prepare for the next level of play. No matter the skill level or background, every player benefits from being part of a supportive and positive environment. Beyond the game, the league fosters community. Friendships are formed, families connect, and by season’s end, everyone becomes part of the
Red Shield family—a community that extends far beyond the field. The success of the program is driven by its dedicated volunteers. Coaches, scorekeepers, and team parents generously give their time, talents, and heart to ensure every child has a great experience. The league typically fields 8 to 10 teams across age
groups, offering T-ball, baseball, and softball.
Registration for the spring season begins in December and January. Practices start in mid-February, with games running through April and May. For those eager to keep playing, the Red Shield offers an All-Star season in the summer, and some
teams now compete in fall ball and growing local tournaments. With an annual participation of 100 to 115 youth, the Red Shield’s baseball and softball program continues to be a cherished tradition—one that kids grow up remembering and many return to share with the next generation.
From Student to Coach: The Red Shield Boxing Program Empowers a New Generation
BY STAFF REPORTS Red Shield
One of the most popular and impactful programs offered year-round at the Red Shield Community Center is its Boxing Program—a dynamic initiative that has grown from humble beginnings into a beacon of hope and discipline for local youth.
The program was revived in 2018 when Juan Barrera, a former Red Shield youth from the 1980s and 1990s, returned to the center with his daughter. Barrera, who grew up in the neighborhood and spent much of his youth participating in Red Shield activities, recalled the boxing program of his childhood and the mentor who helped keep him on a positive path. Reflecting on those formative years, Barrera was inspired to give back to the organization that once gave him direction.
In 2008, Barrera first approached the Red Shield with an idea to reintroduce boxing. He offered to volunteer and, with a modest request for basic equipment—jump ropes, weights, and a punching bag—the Boxing Program was reborn. Since then, it has grown steadily in size and impact.
Fueled by Barrera’s passion and memories, what began as a volunteer-led fitness activity has evolved into a respected training ground for youth, emphasizing discipline, perseverance, and mentorship. Over the years, the program has produced local and regional champions and is now a sanctioned USA Boxing Club. With the support of sponsors like the Ceres Rotary Club, the center acquired a boxing ring and began hosting official boxing events. Today, the Red
Shield Boxing Club boasts victories ranging from local tournaments to national competitions such as the Silver Gloves.
But for Coach Juan Barrera, the program is about more than trophies, medals or belts. “It’s about creating champions in life,” he says. “Boxing is like life, sometimes you get knocked down but you need to get up and continue to fight, never give up, God has a purpose for all of us” says Coach Juan. “We need to find our purpose, we all have gifts, and we need to find that gift.” Coach Juan concludes with “I feel like today my gift is the youth and young adults from The Salvation Army Red Shield ‘s community center. They are a blessing to me.”
Coach Juan leads weekly group sessions where he emphasizes not just technique and fitness, but also safety, prayer, and the deeper values behind the sport. He encourages each student to give 100%, building a culture of mutual respect and personal growth.
The program currently serves an average of 70–80 students daily, ranging in age from seven to adult. While only a small group—eight athletes—are officially registered to compete, the majority participate for fitness, discipline, and a positive outlet.
Among those once mentored by Coach Juan is Coach Angel, now his assistant and a former student who experienced firsthand the lifechanging influence of a dedicated coach. Today, Angel mentors the next generation, carrying forward the program’s mission to inspire, guide, and uplift.
The boxing program also encourages parent involvement, with many undergoing training to become official Salvation Army volunteers. Together, the coaching team and community supporters emphasize the importance of using the sport constructively—never as a weapon.
The Red Shield Boxing Program hosts two sanctioned events annually, in spring and fall.
This year, one of its standout athletes, Tiger Chhim, will represent the center at the Junior Olympics—a proud milestone for a program rooted in second chances and community spirit. From a simple act of giving back to a thriving athletic community, Juan Barrera’s journey from mentee to mentor has come full circle—proving that with support, passion, and purpose, one person can truly make a difference.
Red Shield After School Program Supports Learning and Growth in a Welcoming Space
STAFF REPORTS Red Shield
The Red Shield’s After School Program offers students from first grade to 12th grade a warm, welcoming space to learn, play, and grow. The program begins at 2:30 p.m., when staff members greet the youth and provide a light snack to curb those after-school cravings. Before diving into academics, participants enjoy recreational play to unwind from their school day. When it’s time to focus, students head to a calm and inviting homework room, complete with books, a cozy sofa for reading, and supervised tables for tackling assignments. For students without homework, staff are ready with engaging educational worksheets in subjects like math and reading, ensuring everyone has a productive and supportive environment to learn.
As part of the academic hour, children and teenagers are guided into the computer lab, where they can safely browse educational websites, conduct research, and play skill-building games in areas like reading, math, and typing. The lab is a favorite among the
youth, who also enjoy logging into their schools’ networks for some educational gaming.
Following the homework session, students are treated to a heartier afternoon snack. For many, this late meal serves as their biggest— or even only—dinner of the day, making it an essential part of the program’s commitment to their well-being.
The After School Program also provides a variety of activities that cater to the diverse interests of its participants. Whether exploring educational STEAM initiatives, getting active in physical fitness programs, or engaging in characterbuilding activities, each student has the chance to express their individuality. Options include gym time, computer lab sessions, boxing and fitness training, characterbuilding programs, and even baseball.
By blending structure with choice, the Red Shield’s After School Program not only supports academic success but also encourages creativity, health, and personal growth—all in a safe and supportive community environment.
A Safe Haven for Teens: The Red Shield’s Transformative Program
BY STAFF REPORTS Red Shield
In a world where demands and pressures mount, the Red Shield Community Center stands as a beacon of hope for teens seeking a safe and supportive environment. From junior high through high school, young people can step into a space designed to nurture their growth, creativity, and resilience.
The Red Shield’s teen program is more than just a hangout spot—it’s a place where dreams take shape and skills are honed. Teens can dive into a variety of activities, from sports and computer access to arts, volunteerism, and life-enhancing programs that help them develop both personally and socially.
Friday nights are the highlight of the week. From 6 PM to 8 PM, teens gather for a special program packed with engaging activities like games, team-building exercises, crafts, food events, and even outdoor adventures. These sessions create opportunities for teens to navigate life’s challenges with support and encouragement, all while having fun.
For those who love basketball, the late-night dropin sessions on Wednesdays and Fridays are a slam dunk. Whether playing pick-up games or working out in the fitness room, teens find an outlet for their energy and a chance to thrive in a positive and safe environment.
The Red Shield is more than a community center; it’s a sanctuary where teens can connect, grow, and aspire to live their best lives. Through these programs, young people come together in an atmosphere of inclusivity, empowerment, and inspiration.
Salvation Army Youth Troops: A Program for Building Character
BY STAFF REPORTS Red Shield
The Salvation Army Youth Troops (SAY Troops) are made up of five unique scouting groups, each designed to build character and foster teamwork. This program offers young people the opportunity to engage in various projects and work toward earning badges and emblems. Participants learn valuable life skills and have the chance to interact with peers while developing leadership and teamwork abilities.
At the Red Shield, we run our SAY Troop program from August through May, meeting every Friday at 5:00 p.m. The program is open to youth ages preschool through 17. The different groups within the SAY Troops are as follows:
• Moonbeams: Co-ed, for children ages 4-6
• Sunbeams: For girls in 1st to 5th grade
• Explorers: For boys in 1st to 4th grade
• Girl Guards: For girls in 6th to 12th grade
• Rangers: For boys in 5th to 8th grade
Each troop begins with an assembly time where everyone gathers, followed by smaller group sessions. In these groups, leaders guide the youth as they work toward earning badges and emblems. As part of the program, the youth also learn a troop pledge and motto, which they recite at the annual Youth Rally. Upon completing a badge, participants receive recognition and awards for their hard work and dedication.
In addition to regular meetings, the SAY Troops attend field trips, rallies, and summer camp, which offer further opportunities for growth and learning.
The program is free and available to youth throughout the school year. For more information, or if you’re interested in volunteering or becoming a guest speaker or teacher, please contact our office. We are always looking for individuals to help teach subjects like art, music, science, life skills, and more.
Red Shield Offers Exciting Summer Camps for Local Youth
BY STAFF REPORTS
Red
Shield
Summer is just around the corner, and the Red Shield is once again offering two exciting seasonal opportunities for youth in Stanislaus County: Summer Day Camp and Summer Overnight Camp.
Summer Day Camp runs throughout June and July and is open to children ages 7 to 12. This popular day camp features weekly themed activities designed to keep kids engaged, active, and learning during the summer months. Campers can look forward to a variety of fun, including games, arts and crafts, sports, swimming, and field trips. The camp runs Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and includes breakfast, lunch, and snacks each day.
What sets this camp apart is its smallgroup environment and dedicated camp leaders who guide youth through hands-on activities across the Red Shield’s gym, baseball field, swimming pool, computer lab, and library. Daily swimming time is a camper favorite, providing a chance to cool off and have fun in a safe, supervised setting.
Each week offers a new theme to spark creativity and curiosity. From building friendships to exploring new skills, campers experience a summer full of growth and fun. Space is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
For those seeking adventure beyond Modesto, the Red Shield Summer
Overnight Camp provides a unique experience in the Santa Cruz Mountains at beautiful Redwood Glen in Scotts Valley. Open to youth ages 8 and up, this camp offers a traditional overnight experience with hiking, campfires, team activities, and more—all led by trained and caring staff.
This year’s overnight camp runs June 16–21. Campers depart from the Central Valley on Monday morning and return on Saturday afternoon, bringing home memories of a week filled with nature, adventure, and new friendships. For more information
about the overnight camp, visit www. tsaredwoodglen.org.
Whether it’s a week of local fun or a mountain adventure, the Red Shield’s summer camps provide enriching, safe, and memorable experiences for youth throughout the community.
From Generation to Legacy: A FullCircle Journey at the Red Shield
When we share our stories at the Red Shield, many recognize it as a place that spans generations. Children grow up here, then return with their own kids—and sometimes even their grandkids. For some, the connection runs so deep that the Red Shield becomes not only a second home but also their workplace.
Terry Humphres is a perfect example of someone whose journey has come full circle at the Red Shield. As a child, she participated in many of the fun and enriching programs. Years later, she returned—not as a participant, but as the Program Director.
In her role, Terry shared her experiences and life lessons with the young people who walked through the same doors she once did. As a mentor and leader, she impacted countless lives—including her own. Her work shaped her as a mother, grandmother, and wife.
Terry dedicated over 20 years to serving youth at the Red Shield before retiring. But retirement didn’t mean goodbye. Today, she remains an active member of the senior program, participating in activities designed for adults 55 and older. Terry brings her energy and creativity to initiatives that promote mental stimulation and
keep seniors engaged. She also enjoys the seasonal aquatic fitness classes and remains involved in the Women’s Ministries hosted at the center. For individuals like Terry, the Red Shield represents a full-circle journey—from childhood to career to senior life. How could you not love a place that grows with you? Whether you’re a child, an adult, or a senior, the Red Shield offers something for everyone.
BY MAJOR COURTNEY STRATTON
Maria Arellano joined The Salvation Army Modesto Corps Red Shield Center over twenty-five years ago after moving from the Bay Area. Her initial involvement began with volunteering in the office and gradually progressed to door-to-door outreach for church activities. Maria was initially attracted to the Red Shield because of the warm welcome she received after her aunt invited her to the church services. During a time when her family needed support, the congregation and pastors embraced them with kindness.
Over the years, Maria’s mother,
aunts, and children became involved in the ministries and programs of the Red Shield, helping to share the love of Jesus with the surrounding neighborhood and community. She has witnessed her children grow up participating in various Red Shield activities, including baseball, swimming, and troop programs. Now, as adults, her children bring their own kids to take part in these activities. The Red Shield serves as a community hub, providing a Christcentered, family-oriented ministry that offers a safe space for kids and families to experience God’s love while having fun.
Maria now works as the Operations Manager of the Red Shield and recently celebrated twenty-five years with the organization. Every day, she shares her love of Jesus with everyone who comes through the center’s doors. While she enjoys all aspects of her job, her favorite program is
baseball. It is the highlight of her year, where she has the opportunity to foster team spirit and collaboration among the kids. It brings her immense joy to see some of the children she coached many years ago return with their children—some even becoming coaches themselves.

Backpacks of Creativity: Empowering Young Minds Through Art at the Red Shield
At the Red Shield Community Center, creativity took center stage during a special month-long art initiative that empowered youth to express their emotions through design. Thanks to a generous donation of customizable backpacks from Chalk Wild, participants learned how art could become a personal language of self-expression.
Guided by staff, the kids explored techniques for drawing objects, animals, and even dinosaurs. More importantly, they discovered that creation is a deeply personal and unique process—reminding them that each masterpiece reflects not only their imagination but also the beautiful individuality imbued by their creator.
As the children poured their hearts into their designs, they were encouraged to embrace their own styles and adapt their drawings as they went. While some initially faced moments of frustration when faced with artistic challenges, surveys revealed that by the end of each class, those same students experienced a profound
sense of joy and pride in their accomplishments. The project did more than teach drawing skills; it cultivated resilience, enthusiasm, and the understanding that true creation is both personal and everevolving. This art initiative, rooted in community and creativity, left a lasting impression—one backpack at a time.
