The economical activity was based on the selling of the lime, that was mainly used for the construction and painting of houses, giving the houses of Mijas that characteristic white colour. Both, the extraction and the traditional use of lime is disappearing but, at present, it is still used for industrial purposes as it is considered of enormous use in new applications such as ground acid correction, disinfection, pest control treatment, water purification, etc. Did you know that…? The different parts that form a kiln are: Hole for the firewood, door or oven opening, body, clave and torta. In order for the kiln to produce 1150 kg of lime, it is necessary to work three days and nights collecting wood and reviving the fire. There exists a document dated in the year 1528 that is written by a neighbour of Mijas and in which he is applying to the Mayor of Mijas for permission to chop down wood in order to produce lime.
