Biosphere Reserves arise from UNESCO's "Man and the Biosphere" (MAB) programme, which dates back to 1971, and aims to establish a scientific basis for the improvement of relationships between people and their environments. There are currently more than six hundred recognised reserves in countries throughout the world and since 2003 Monfragüe is one of them, the only one in Extremadura.
On the following pages we will explain some of the cornerstones which have made this recognition possible and the best way to enjoy them by discovering them first-hand.
