9/11 - 15 YEARS LATER

15 Years Later We all remember where we were on September 11, 2001. It was just another routine weekday. Atleast that is how the day began.

Fifteen years ago, we were teenagers in High School, or on our first job out of College, some of us children just arriving to school. Today those of us who remember living through that day are adults who lived through an unforgettable day which has shaped the daily lives we live today and the world around us.

I remember getting to work that day at the Starbucks Coffee in front of Battery Park, 24 State Street, fifteen minutes late to my morning shift.

At about 8:45 am I was changing into my uniform when I step out front to see our regular customers confused and disconnected from their daily routine. Customers ordered and left without their drinks, some walked in and right out of the store confused and in disbelief as news spread about what was happening just a few blocks up. We were still unaware of the gravity of the situation.

I remember the sound of the second plane hitting. We all knew then whatever happened was no accident.

As the first tower collapsed we were in the store covering the bottom of the doors with towels, customers crowded inside as we see the air outside turn white with ashes and debris, for minutes uncertain of the events right ourside our doors.

Minutes later we became a rest stop for emergency services. We stayed working well into the afternoon providing water and making the facilities available to the heroes of that day.

I walked home that day, from one end of Manhattan to the other alongside fellow New Yorkers whose lives too forever changed that day.

Born and raised in New York City, Jimmy Aponte captures an abstract point of view of the city.

A leader in design, development, and the distribution of still Photographs & Paintings; Aponte’s Road to the Fine Arts wasn’t straight forward. As he explored through the performing arts, he found himself as a photographer. During a production in 2004 Jimmy was given a camera to document the behind the scenes. He hasn’t stopped snapping pictures since.

Today Aponte is a well known SOHO street artist; selling his work to local art lovers and tourist from around the globe. 1. What inspired you to do art?

In general what in inspires me to do art is to just see and hear people’s reactions you know I get a kick off of that it drives me & of course I need to get paid.

2. Whom are some of the artist you’ve been influenced by, past or present?

Umm in the past, Basquiat he a huge inspiration he actually once lived where I sell my art now so just knowing his past is inspiring I love that.

3. How long after u began did you say to yourself “I can make a living doing this“?

I dunno I kinda just jumped into it, I started uploading a lot of pictures on Facebook just expressing myself through photography and people were hitting me up like “Yo, I’ll buy that” I was like “oh shit”. But I had an investor to start the business. That catapulted me.

4. Other than social media, how do u get exposure for your Art? Meeting people in the streets at the street store I Directly meet the consumer they come to me they’re like “that’s Dooopee. You know and boom I just met them.”

5. What’s a misconception people have about street Artists?

That we’re smelly and rude.

6. How hard is it making a living as a steet artist in NYC? I guess It’s hard as fuck! It’s mad hard you gotta be a hustler and not everyone’s a hustler you got to be talented to a certain degree you know. That formula is hard to come upon. So you just gotta constantly hustle that’s it. There’s not a lot of hustlers. That’s it!

7. What’s the most amount of time you’ve spent on one particular piece?

Umm probably like 2 months. Anyway it was like trying to get the right shot of the right location that a client wanted and I would send em pictures like every other day. He was, no no no nah but he really wanted something, after like about two months I nailed it.

8. If you weren’t doing art what would you be doing?

I’d probably be getting fired somewhere or looking to get hired.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is the period from September 15 to October 15 in the United States, when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate our group’s heritage and culture.

Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through our strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service.

We have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuriesold traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of our community.

Why September 15th?

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively.

The term Hispanic or Latino, refers to Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. On the 2010 Census form, people of Spanish, Hispanic and/or Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Mexican American, Chicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or “another Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin.”

Today, 55 million people or 17% of the American population are of Hispanic or Latino origin.

LATINO IMPACT

ON THE 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION BY: John Patino

The Latino population has grown into the largest minority group in the United States, a change that makes this voting sector increasingly influential in this November’s presidential election.

The 2016 presidential election will certainly go down in the history books as probably one of the most circus-like elections in history. From constant scandal to candidates immaturely lunging personal insults at one another, these candidates have been the worst thing to happen to the elections in a long time.

Never has the election been so difficult for voters all around, as the choice is basically to settle for the lesser evil out of both candidates. Latino voters, making up the largest minority group in the United States, may have stronger influence in November’s

election than expected.

Latinos make up about 17 percent of the total U.S. population, according to the Pew Research Center, while census figures predict that the number will reach approximately 28.6 percent by 2060. Gerver Torres, a Latin American specialist at Gallup Consulting stated “Hispanics in the United States have an increasing importance and their weight is even more significant in some states with higher numbers of Latinos.” Barack Obama received approximately 72 percent of the Hispanic vote in the last presidential election, according to Pew

Research Center. Obama’s statistics show that the Hispanic vote will primarily concentrate around a Democratic candidate, and we as voters can only hope that to be true this upcoming election season.

Overall, approximately 27 million people of Latino origin are able to vote, and since 2012 over 1.2 million Hispanics have become U.S citizens which only increases the number of eligible Hispanic voters as the years go by. Six states have a Latino population of over 15 percent: California, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, North Carolina, and Texas.

focusing their efforts in these states in hopes of gaining an increase in supporting voters, and more minority approval. Hispanics have become an ethnic group that cannot be ignored due to its increasing size and influence, therefore, it causes political groups to actively engage them in hopes of gaining their support. When it comes to party affiliations, 52 percent of Latinos identify themselves as Democrats, 30 percent as Independent and 9 percent as Republican.

A large percentage of Hispanic voters believe that the Democratic party contains candidates that will aid the country in its major issues pertaining the economy, job market, education and environmental care. However, for this election Nielsen researchers stated “but for most issues, more than half of those asked did not affirmatively identify either party as having the better vision on the matter in question.� So, the big question is, are Latino voters influential enough to determine who wins the presidential election? With states like Nevada that contain almost 20 percent of the Latino population eligible to vote, we will have to wait and see.

La Ola Nueva De Boutiques Por El Medio Social En los días de antes teníamos que pasar por la molestia de tener que salir para ir de tienda a tienda, ahora eso ha cambiado para la mayoría o quizás para todos con el red social y también con las nuevas olas de boutiques en los medios sociales. Hay boutiques en paginas como IG y FB donde se puede encontrar todo desde ropa a zapatos y hasta accesorios. Ustedes se sorprenden de lo mucho que se puede ahorrar en las boutiques de medios sociales. Con opciones infinita hoy en dia se puede socializar y a la misma vez comprar. Me puse a investigar estas boutiques, lo que encontré me sorprendió. Casi muchas de estas boutiques tienen precios que no llegan a más de $200. ¿Ha quien no le gusta lo bueno bonito y barato? Es ahí donde decido embarcar en este sueño de realizar mi propia Iínea que se adapte para cuerpos latinos como el mío.

Michelle López Colombani Nacida en San Juan el 4 de Septiembre de 1987. Estudio en la Universidad Inter Americana de Puerto Rico. Donde curso cuatro años de Educación Elemental asi obteniendo un bachillerato.

Luego de obtener su bachillerato la misma se apasiono por los medias de comunicación. Así trabajando diferentes proyecto tales como participando en la pelicula puertorriqueña “Mi Verano Amanda 3” siendo una de las actrices principal de dicha pelicula. Fue ganadora de; concurso del Bombón de Primera hora en el 2011. Ha sido la imagen de varias portadas distribuidas en Puerto Rico y uno de su mas reciente trabajo siendo la imagen publicitaria de la compañia Capitol Security.

Actualmente a sus 28 años Michelle López forma parte del equipo de trabajo de la 94 con el Coyote y Mario. Todos estos proyectos le han dado paso a desarrollarse coma empresaria y poder lanzar su propia linea de trajes de baño llamados “Sea of Dreams” by Michelle López y su nueva Iinea de mahones, Michelle López Jeans.

Michelle López Jeans comenzo todo en un viaje de placer en donde pude darme cuenta lo difficil que era conseguir mahones que me gustaran y que los mismos fueran entallados a mi cuerpo. Es ahí donde decido embarcar en este sueño de realizar mi propia Iínea que se adapte para cuerpos latinos como el mío. Entiéndase de cinturas pequeñas y caderas anchas.

Garlic Mojito Sauce GARLIC MOJITO is a healthy homemade dipping sauce to serve with tostones and also makes a perfect sauce for poultry, and beef.

Prep time: 15 Minutes Serves 2-3 Ingredients: 1 head of Garlic EVOO Vinegar Kosher Salt Instructions: 1.Peel 1 head of garlic and mince very finely.

2..Add minced garlic to a small bowl pour 1 tablespoon of EVOO and Vinegar.

3.Sprinkle salt to your desired taste then stir.

5.Refrigerate or serve immediately as side dip.

Cilantro Garlic Vinagrette CILANTRO GARLIC VINAIGRETTE is a healthy homemade dressing with fresh cilantro, lemon juice, garlic, honey and vinegar for a smooth crisp salad dressing or perfect marinade for poultry, and beef.

Prep time: 10 Minutes Serves 4-6 Ingredients: ⅓ c. olive oil 2 tbsp water.

2 handfuls cilantro ½ lemon 2 tsp. garlic, minced ¼ tsp. salt 1 tsp honey 2 tbsp champagne or red wine vinegar Instructions: 1. Add all of the ingredients to a blender.

Located by the water at 4540 Center Blvd in Long Island City, this sleek Latin fusion restaurant has stunning views of the NYC skyline all throughout the venue. Although parking is not readily available in the area, the restaurant offers an inexpensive valet parking service.

For starters we tried the Crispy Arepas and the Guacamole, which were both the right mix of flavors and seasoning. One of our entrée selections was the Churrasco, which was cooked to perfection, and served with white rice, red beans, tostones and a tasty chimichurri sauce. If you aren’t much of a meat eater, a seafood dish we highly recommended is the Lime Crusted Atlantic Salmon, which is paired with green cilantro mash potatoes and a pineapple reduction. Delish! Their drinks also hit the spot. Blend has great selection of delicious handcrafted cocktails like the passion fruit mojito, which is fantastic. And if you happen to have any room for dessert, the Warm Chocolate Melt Cake or Coconut Flan are two great ways to end the meal.

Adding to all the other impressive things about this restaurant, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays diners are treated to the sounds of live Latin music. That accompanied by the ambience, décor and delicious food, make it a perfect “blend” for a romantic night out or dinner with friends.

I was 23 when I decided one night to make my own makeup Instagram page, 4 days before New Years Day. That’s same night I grabbed my sister from her room and applied makeup to her face. Once I had posted my sister’s before and after pictures, I was being messaged right away from family and friends wanting to book me cause they’ve also always loved the way I did makeup on myself. On New Years Eve I had 4 clients who I was only charging $25 for a full face.

2. What made you want to become a makeup artist?

I was 16 and I had a lot of acne problems, on my face and back, when my mom took me into MAC Cosmetics to purchase my first foundation.

3. What’s some of your holy grail makeup products?
