Liebe Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden, ich heiße Sie herzlich auf den Seiten des TUM Graduate School-Kursprogrammes für das Sommersemester 2013 willkommen! Wieder haben wir für Sie im bewährten Format eine Vielzahl von besonderen Kursen und Trainings rund um Ihre persönliche und berufliche Weiterqualifizierung aufgelegt. Besonders ans Herz legen möchte ich Ihnen in diesem Semester unsere Veranstaltungen zum Schwerpunktthema „Project Management“. Die dort vermittelten Erkenntnisse sind nicht nur für das eigene Dissertationsprojekt in hohem Maße wertvoll, die Fähigkeit unterschiedlichste Projektstrukturen zu verstehen, Projekte richtig zu planen und zu leiten stellt auch eine wichtige Schlüsselqualifikation für die Arbeit in Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Industrie dar. Dear doctoral candidates, It is with great pleasure that we present the new TUM Graduate School program for the coming semester with the focus area project management. For you as a doctoral candidate, project work is daily business. You are involved in projects of different types, the most important one of course being your dissertation. But how can you manage this grand project, which often involves a number of subprojects, effectively and efficiently? How can you develop a project plan that keeps you on track? How do you set smart goals for yourself and maybe others? What strategies can help you to manage multi-stakeholder projects? Approaches to these and related questions are presented in courses on the focus topic project management of the current program. Liebe Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden, als einer Eurer Sprecher des Graduate Council möchte ich Euch allen das Kursprogramm der TUM Graduate School wärmstens empfehlen. Die vielfältigen Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten lassen sich ganz nach Euren individuellen Wünschen und Bedürfnissen zusammenstellen und erlauben daher eine zielgerichtete Qualifizierung auf Euer eigenes Karriereziel. Überfachliche Kompetenzen, die wir hier an der TUM oder an zukünftigen Arbeitsplätzen gut anwenden können, sind ebenso Teil des Kursprogramms wie Angebote zur persönlichen Weiterentwicklung. Die TUM Graduate School bietet damit eine beispielhafte Möglichkeit zur Weiterqualifizierung auf höchstem Niveau. In diesem Semester steht das Thema Projektmanagement im Vordergrund. Damit hat die TUM Graduate School sich einem Schwerpunkt verschrieben, welcher uns alle im täglichen Leben an den unterschiedlichsten Stellen begegnet, nicht zuletzt bei der Planung und Erstellung unserer Dissertationsprojekte. Gleichzeitig wird uns hiermit eine optimale Vorbereitung für unsere zukünftige Karriere geboten, unabhängig davon, ob diese im akademischen Umfeld stattfindet oder in der freien Wirtschaft. Kompetenzen im Bereich Projektmanagement sind ein absolutes Muss für den Erfolg! Das Programm kann allerdings nur so gut sein, wie wir unsere Wünsche und Vorstellungen kommunizieren. Das Team der TUM Graduate School und die einzelnen Graduiertenzentren erwarten von uns Rückmeldungen zu den stattfindenden Kursen sowie Ideen für neue und weitere Angebote. The TUM Graduate School
Doctoral candidates form the heart of the research culture here at the Technische Universität München. The TUM Graduate School therefore particularly promotes subject specific, interdisciplinary and international qualification programs. It ensures that at the end of their doctoral program, young and talented scientists will not only have vital skills which are crucial in assuming responsibilities in leading roles within industry, academia and science. Furthermore, for a quick and successful completion of your doctoral degree, the TUM Graduate School ensures attentive supervision through both an academic supervisor and an independent mentor. The TUM Graduate School´s networking events offer our doctoral candidates the possibility to develop points of contact with the latest research projects of other disciplines and the opportunity to further develop existing ones. Together with the chairs and institutes of the TUM, the thirteen Faculty Graduate Centers and eleven interdisciplinary Thematic Graduate Centers provide doctoral candidates with subject-specific courses focusing especially on their individual research areas in addition to individual guidance. The exclusive TUM Graduate School course list provides all members with valuable tools for their personal career development. A multitude of courses, forums and lectures from close collaborations with TUM educational institutions such as the Munich Center for Technology in Society, WIMES, Carl von Linde-Akademie, UnternehmerTUM, ProLehre, the TUM.Diversity and Language Center are especially tailored to meet the demands and requirements of doctoral candidates and are all exclusively available to them.
Focus Topic
In order to do justice to the diverse demands of doctoral candidates in science, we offer one of five recurring themes each semester as a focus topic central to our qualification program. Die Fähigkeit komplexe Projekte richtig zu organisieren, zu strukturieren und zu kontrollieren stellt eine Kernkompetenz für die Arbeit in nahezu jedem Bereich - ob Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft oder Industrie - dar. Die TUM-GS unterstützt Sie in diesem Semester mit ihrem Fokusangebot darin, Ihr Verständnis und Ihre Kenntnisse im Bereich Projektmanagement zu vertiefen. Different personalities, goals or strategy preferences, different communication styles or behavior can lead to misunderstanding and conflict, to name just a few. More often than not, the results of conflicts are time-consuming and destructive. Over time, motivation and performance levels of those involved may drop and gradually conflicts become more difficult to resolve by reaching an understanding or consensus. This scenario does not have to be inevitable at all! This workshop introduces you to selected key competencies for successful conflict facilitation and resolution. Using conflict analysis, self-management, communication and facilitation tools learned here you can turn each conflict into a constructive process. Discussion points are: conflict dynamics and stages of escalation, problem identification and conflict analysis, styles of communication, negotiation and conflict behavior, conflict resolution styles, self-management and first aid in conflicts, Harvard Model (Harvard Negotiation Project), steps for facilitating and resolving conflict, conveying criticism in a constructive manner. Handeln lässt sich bei genauer Betrachtung sehr häufig als Verhandeln ausmachen. Eine Schlüsselqualifikation, die immer wichtiger wird. Je mehr wir auf Zusammenarbeit setzen und/oder auf sie angewiesen sind, umso häufiger müssen wir verhandeln, im Großen wie im Kleinen. This course serves doctoral candidates who require additional applied statistical training for their thesis, journal publications or other projects. The course covers all aspects of applied regression in detail, including model selection, diagnostics, inference, and interpretation of output from software packages. In addition, non-parametric statistical tests and logistic and Poisson regression are covered, as well as how to decide which statistical model and test is appropriate for the data. At the end of each two-hour class a Consulting Round Table takes place, whereby students are introduced to the TUM Stat|Beratung program as well as how to successfully engage in statistical consulting for their doctoral work and careers afterwards.

After completing the course Participants are strongly encouraged to take the followup TUM Graduate School Course “Using R for Statistical Data Analysis II” as this course gives hands-on practice on implementing the concepts taught in SDA II. Die TUMentrepreneurship Academy ist die unternehmerische Qualifizierungseinrichtung an der TUM Graduate School. Ziel ist es, Wissenschaftler zu begeistern und zu ermutigen, neue Wege zu gehen, unternehmerische Denkanstöße zu bekommen und Marktperspektiven für ihre Forschung zu entwickeln. Speziell für WissenschaftlerInnen vermittelt die TUMentrepreneurship Academy praxisorientiertes Wissen zur Erkennung und Entwicklung von unternehmerischen Chancen, grundlegend für die ersten Schritte in Richtung Gründung eines Technologie-Start-up. Die unternehmerischen Qualifizierungsangebote werden vom TUM Entrepreneurship Research Institute (Professor Holger Patzelt) und der UnternehmerTUM, dem Zentrum für Innovation und Gründung an der TUM, konzipiert und durchgeführt. The TUMentrepreneurship Academy is the entrepreneurial training center at the TUM Graduate School. The pursuit is to activate and encourage doctoral candidates at TUM to embrace new ways of thinking, to get entrepreneurial impulses and to develop market perspectives for your research. The <interact 2013> symposium – organized entirely by PhD students – is an excellent opportunity for you to present your scientific work to other PhD candidates! The <interact 2013> symposium will bring together young scientists from all research organizations and all fields of life sciences in order to foster new ideas, cooperation and friendships in an interdisciplinary atmosphere. Apart from the opportunity to present and discuss each other´s scientific work, there will be three inspiring keynote talks as well as a special lecture at the pre-event. Talks and posters by PhD, master students and young Post-docs will be the main focus of the symposium, serving as a platform for interdisciplinary discussion. The symposium is open to participants from all areas of life sciences and related fields interested in presenting their work to a broad scientific audience. Dieser Kurs ist ein Muss für alle, die forschen! Immer wieder begehen ForscherInnen „wissenschaftliches Fehlverhalten“, auch ohne dass es ihnen bewusst wäre. Oder sie werden Opfer vom Fehlverhalten anderer, beides kann der eigenen Karriere schaden. Doch wo endet eigentlich „allgemeine Schludigkeit“, und wo beginnt „wissenschaftliches Fehlverhalten“? Um kritische Situationen von vornherein zu erkennen und zu vermeiden, gibt Ihnen dieser Kurs zur guten wissenschaftlichen Praxis den nötigen Überblick. So umgehen Sie Fallstricke und erhöhen die Sicherheit, jederzeit richtig zu handeln. This course aims to enhance the participants’ skills in writing and editing English for scientific publication, including dissertations. Emphasis is placed on efficiency, accuracy, fluency and style. An introduction to publishing in scientific journals will be given by a professional editor along with invaluable tips for publishing from a successful academic. Active writing is an integral part of the course, with corrected exercises returned for feedback. Typical grammatical errors in grammar will be tackled together with a review and build-up of essential vocabulary. Each participant will have the opportunity to have their manuscript assessed on a one-to-one basis. Topics • increasing the level of readability by writing more effective sentences and paragraphs in English, avoiding ambiguity • optimizing the structure of a scientific paper, sentences, paragraphs and sections, individual attention to your own already written work and papers • writing effective, descriptive and informative abstracts • learning techniques for constructing strong, coherent arguments • reviewing points of grammar where the most mistakes are made. • marking core vocabulary of the most frequent items in scientific texts • improving readability with guidelines for better English style, increasing chances of acceptance for publication

This course serves doctoral candidates who require additional applied statistical training for their thesis, journal publications or other projects. The course covers all aspects of applied regression in detail, including model selection, diagnostics, inference, and interpretation of output from software packages. In addition, non-parametric statistical tests and logistic and Poisson regression are covered, as well as how to decide which statistical model and test is appropriate for the data. At the end of each two-hour class a Consulting Round Table takes place, whereby candidates are introduced to the TUM Stat|Beratung program as well as how to successfully engage in statistical consulting for their doctoral work and careers afterwards. After completing the course Participants are strongly encouraged to take the followup TUM Graduate School Course “Using R for Statistical Data Analysis II” as this course gives hands-on practice on implementing the concepts taught in SDA II. Mountain hiking in a beautiful landscape with great views, including a rest in a homely mountain hut! A good occasion to make the acquaintance of the Bavarian Alps, and have some good conversation while walking.
This hiking tour is an absolute private trip at your own risk, due to liability reasons
Precondition You need to be sure-footed, have solid alpine boots and be in a good shape for approx. 700 m altitude difference and a 9 km route. Please bring your own food/drinks for the rest on the summit top. On the way back from the top we are going to stop by a mountain hut with small traditional restaurant. Transport to the starting point via train/bus will be arranged and sponsored by GZW.

In this workshop, we will learn the basics of effective scientific writing and then take what we have learned to start preparing actual scientific manuscripts or grant proposals. You will read and edit both published and unpublished scientific manuscripts, and you will prepare your own scientific manuscript or your own grant proposal. This course focuses especially on writing for high-impact scientific journals and competitive funding agencies. It covers all aspects from ‘what makes a scientific project high-impact’, over how to write clearly & concisely, how to design clear figures, to editing and the submission process.

Participants should plan or be in the process of writing a competitive scientific manuscript or grant proposal. They should have scientific data ready to be used in the course (all participants will sign a confidentiality agreement). Participants will read, edit, and write scientific papers and manuscripts. You need to bring a laptop, notepad and pen, and preferably a draft of your scientific manuscript. The workshop is aimed at graduate research students & post-docs who have some experience in writing scientific papers and might have taken an introductory workshop on scientific writing. Innovationen erfolgen nach bestimmten Mustern, in denen wiederkehrende Lösungsprinzipien als Schlüssel zu durchschlagenden Erfindungen identifiziert werden können. In der Methodik des erfinderischen Problemlösens (TRIZ) sind Erkenntnisse über die Grundmuster und Regeln des Innovationsprozesses strukturiert zusammengetragen und praxisnah methodisch aufbereitet. Die einzelnen Bausteine des Methodenbaukastens werden im Rahmen der Lehrveranstaltung zunächst jeweils theoretisch vorgestellt und anschließend durch die Teilnehmenden an konkreten Praxisbeispielen angewendet und vertieft. Der Kurs schließt mit einer Zertifizierung zum TRIZ Level 1 nach MA TRIZ ab, welche auch in namhaften Unternehmen wie Samsung, Intel, Hyundai, Siemens und General Electric geführt wird.

Das Seminar schlägt die Brücke zwischen den formulierten Standards für gute wissenschaftliche Praxis und praktischen Tipps zum Verfassen der Dissertationsschrift, speziell bezogen auf das Spektrum wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens an der Fakultät für Maschinenwesen. Am ersten Tag werden anhand der Leitlinien zur Sicherung der guten wissenschaftlichen Praxis Kernelemente wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens herausgearbeitet und an der Praxis gespiegelt. Am zweiten Tag wird der rechtliche Rahmen einer Dissertation abgesteckt und daraus zusammen mit den Ergebnissen des ersten Tages Eckpunkte für das Zitations- und Publikationsverhalten abgeleitet. Anschließend werden Grundlagen wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens mit einem Professor der Fakultät diskutiert. Writing scientific texts is an indispensable skill for any successful engineer and scientist. This seminar will present a handful of techniques and approaches that will help to improve the quality of written text in a scientific environment. This includes techniques to increase the clarity of the written texts. To improve specific elements of a text such as the abstract and the introduction, as well as the structure of a scientific article. The seminar will also discuss how to deal properly with references and, finally, also discuss methods and approaches to make the writing process itself less painful, more productive and more integrated in the daily schedule of scientific work.

The SFB 768 Graduate Center is part of the Collaborative Research Center SFB 768 “Cycle Management of Innovation Processes” of TUM together with LMU. The Research Center consists of 16 subprojects that are all engaged in problems emerging during (technical) innovation processes. The Cluster of Excellence, coordinated by the Technische Universität München, is a close collaboration between scientists from various disciplines connecting neurocognitive and neuro-biological foundations to engineering sciences at leading research institutions in Munich. Besides the TUM, scientists from the LMU, Universität der Bundeswehr, the Max-Planck Institute of Neurobiology and the German Aerospace Agency DLR are involved. CoTeSys investigates cognition for technical systems such as vehicles, robots, and factories. Cognitive technical systems are equipped with artificial sensors and actuators, integrated and embedded into physical systems, and act in a physical world. They differ from other technical systems in that they perform cognitive control and have cognitive capabilities.

The RECESS international doctoral program (sponsored by DFG) brings together researchers from two Munich universities (TUM and LMU) and Moscow State University. The central theme of the program is the regulation and evolution of cellular systems. It unites research groups from several disciplines to model and understand the behavior of regulatory networks among species based on high-throughput expression data. Doctoral candidates receive both theoretical and experimental training, gaining the opportunity to learn specialized skills from participating labs at all three universities. A new generation of scientists will be able to explore the vast amount of genetic, genomic, and proteomic data that is being produced and to integrate it into a new understanding of how cellular processes are regulated.

Starting on October 1st 2012, the Research Training Group GRK 1482 has been granted a second funding period by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). With focus on electromobility in tropical megacities, TUM CREATE is a joint research program between TUM and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore with funding by the National Research Foundation of Singapore. Around 70 doctoral candidates from all over the world are currently working on their doctoral thesis projects at TUM CREATE in Singapore. The Graduate Center TUM CREATE was established in November 2012 in Singapore, which is one of 24 branches of TUM-GS and the first one in Asia. Under the umbrella of TUM-GS, the new thematic Graduate Center provides attractive training programs to all doctoral candidates of TUM CREATE. This will bring value to the scientific research and enhance the attractiveness and quality of the doctoral program of TUM CREATE. The Graduate Center TUM CREATE is beneficial for TUM doctoral candidates who spend the majority of their time in Singapore. Through interdisciplinary training and networking opportunities, it helps build up a closer relationship between doctoral candidates in Singapore and their peers in Germany. The Graduate Center also brings a global perspective to TUM-GS as our Joint PhD students from NTU will be part of the Graduate Center as well. Rückblicke auf Geleistetes, mögliche Karrierewege und Hilfestellungen zu den nächsten Karriereschritten stehen im Mittelpunkt dieses Seminars. The TUM Graduate School´s final seminar aims at helping doctorates, within the last year of their degree, to consider the various opportunities available to them after they graduate. Professionally guided reflections on personal achievements, future career paths, coupled with on the spot support and advice regarding the next steps in their professional career are the main focus of this seminar.

Registration Please register online under: www.tum.de/gs/doktoranden/anmeldung After this, you will receive an e-mail with all payment details. Your registration will only become official after you have made the payment and send a confirmation e-mail. Withdrawal If you want to withdraw your registration, please do so at least one week prior via e-mail. In case of a cancellation your fee can only be returned if we can find someone else to take your place. Should you not appear on the day of the event we will not be able to refund your fee. Should this happen twice, you will not be considered for the rest of the events during the term! Extra Information The events will only take place with a sufficient number of participants. About one week prior to the event you will get more details about the meeting point as well as other organisatorial information. Please note: Taking part in the events is at your own risk. 20.04.2013, 19:00 – 23:00 Munich Spring Festival Fee: 5 EUR Munich Spring Festival takes place every year at the Theresienwiese, just like the famous Oktoberfest in autumn. It is also known as Oktoberfest’s Little Sister and offers you traditional German drinks and food as well as some special events on particular days of its duration. Participate in our tour of the colourful and lively area filled both with local residents and tourists from abroad. We invite you for drinks, snacks and a great time together.
06.05.2013, 10:00 – 14:00 Campus Tour Weihenstephan Fee: free We invite all doctoral candidates who do research on the TUM Campus Weihenstephan as well as all others to participate in the Campus tour. The event is organized in cooperation between TUM Graduate School and the Graduate Center Weihenstephan and its aim is to give you an insight into the structure of the science center you are working at. During the tour you will not only see all the important buildings and service offices but also learn everything you need to know about completing your PhD in Weihenstephan. After the tour we invite you for a relaxed lunch in the traditional restaurant Bräustüberl Weihenstephan. All participants will also receive a TUM Welcome Package in a stylish TUM bag.

This very talented musician will perform his unique compositions from his instrumental album “Solo Piano II” in the Munich Philharmonic hall. After the concert we will spend some nice time in one of the charming cafés near the Philharmonic Hall.
08.06.2013, 8:30 – 19:00 Trip to Rothenburg ob der Tauber Fee: 12 EUR Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a beautiful town in Northern Bavaria, known especially for its well-preserved medieval old town with its picturesque squares and magnificent commercial and residential buildings of the medieval upper class. We will spend a wonderful day there discovering its history, present and its cultural significance. We will also take part in a guided tour through the unique Medieval Crime Museum and have lunch together in one of the charming cafés of Rothenburg.

01.08.2013, 19:30 – 23:00 Alumni to Newbies Fee: free If you wish to find out more about completing your PhD at the TUM and profit from experience of former doctoral candidates, come to the informative Alumni to Newbies Night. You will have the opportunity to get in touch with those who have already finished their PhD and discuss topics such as working overseas, applying successfully for grants and general insider tips concerning publishing. We will start the evening with a round table discussion to give you the opportunity to ask the Alumni everything you want to know about your doctorate phase at the TUM. Afterwards you are invited to our buffet with drinks and snacks. You can spend the rest of the evening perfecting your ping pong and table football skills.
20.07.2013, 9:00 – 16:00 Climbing Center Munich Fee: 8 EUR Join us for an exciting day spent together in the climbing center offering you a possibility to express yourself through a balanced physical effort. Under the guidance of professionals we will climb on artificial indoor and outdoor walls, maybe confronting some fears and weaknesses but above all having a lot of fun. 6540 square meters of climbing surface offer us a variety of climbing areas and structures. This is a very stimulating activity for everyone, also for those without any climbing experience.
10.08.2013, 9:00 – 18:00 Hiking Tour Tegernsee Fee: 11 EUR The surrounding area of the beautiful Lake Tegernsee with its 27 hiking trails is a true paradise for walkers and hikers of all abilities. Experience the natural world and enjoy the great alpine landscapes while taking a hike around the lake situated 50 km south-east of Munich. We will take a relatively easy route and our hike will last approximately four hours. During a break we will reward ourselves with some traditional Apfelstrudel and a nice hot cup of coffee in one of the cafés.
