STEM:MINDisanafterschoolprogramatTulsa’s MemorialMiddleSchoolthatfocusesoncreating safespacesfordiverselearnersinastate-of-theartSTEMdemonstrationlab.Student-inspiredand student-designed,thelaballowsforhands-on learningusingvarioustechnologies Itisalsohome toahighlysuccessfulroboticsprogramwhere studentsbuilddrones,underwaterrobots,and quadcopters.STEM:MINDstudentspursuetheirown ideas,solveproblems,andcollaboratewiththeir peerstodesign,develop,andplay.

In2021-2022,TRSApartneredwithPEAR(Partnerships inEducationandResilience)toimplementastudyto determinehowprogramsofferedbyTRSApartners affectedparticipants’STEMoutcomes,including categorieslikeSTEMcareerknowledge,STEMcareer interest,STEMidentity,andmore.Oftheseven partnerprogramsincludedinthestudy,research indicatedthatSTEM:MINDconsistentlyshoweda large,ifnotthelargest,magnitudeofpositive changeacrossallSTEMoutcomes.Whymightthis be?

STEM:MINDintentionallycreatesaninclusivespace andnurturesasenseofbelongingforallstudents, withaparticularfocusonengagingLGBTQ+ students Withanemphasisonmakinglearningfun, theprogramcreatesaspaceforyouthtofindtheir nicheinSTEM,embodyingtheideathat“STEMis everyone.”LeadSTEM:MINDeducator,Abraham Kamara,saysstudentparticipants“becomevery proudofwhattheydo…[theybelieve],‘Ican contribute,Icanhelpotherkids…Imatterin society.’”
