FlightNightisoursignaturefundraisingevent,raisingcrucialfundsthatenableustoachieve ourmissionandcreateaworldofNextGenSTEMprograms.Followingthegenerousleadership ofNORDAMandtheSiegfriedFamilyoverthelastdecade,wewereexcitedtoonceagainhost thisfunandimpactfulfundraiser.
The2024eventfeaturedcaptivatingairshowacts,anawe-inspiringdronedisplay,adynamic liveauction,asavorygourmetdinner,andthewell-deservedrecognitionoffourexceptional educatorswhochampionSTEMeducationacrossOklahoma.Withthepersistenceofa passionate26-personvolunteerplanningcommittee,weengaged103sponsorsand experiencedarecord-breakingnightofevent,raisingmorethan$216,000fromindividual attendees.

EH:OurSTEMcurriculumisdiverse,encompassing3D modeling,circuitry,drones,robotics,and virtual/augmentedreality.
JW:Howhasthe$8,000grantfundingenabledyouto expandorenhanceyourwork?
EH:Thegranthassignificantlyenhancedourprogram. We'vereplenishedessentialsupplies,purchasedstudent electronicskits,acquiredaclassroomsetofArduinos, andinvestedina3Dscannerforadvancedprojects.This fundingalsoallowsustoexpandSTEMopportunitiesto ourelementaryschoolstudents.
JW:Whatchallengesandopportunitiesdoyouseein teachingSTEMinruralschools?
EH:Amajorchallengeislimitedexposuretoreal-world STEMcareers.Ruralschoolsmayalsofacefinancial constraintsinacquiringnecessaryequipmentand technology.
However,ruralsettingsofferuniqueopportunities.I'm fortunatetofacilitatementorshipbetweenolderand youngerstudentsandfostercross-curricular collaborations.
JW:Overyour30-yearteachingcareer,howhaveyou seenSTEMeducationevolve,andwhatexcitesyoumost aboutitsfuture?
EH:WitnessingtheevolutionofSTEMeducationfrom traditionalmethodstothecurrenteraoftechnologydrivenlearningistrulyinspiring.
Thepotentialforstudentstoexploretheirpassions,create innovativesolutions,andcontributetoarapidlychanging worldthroughSTEMeducationisincrediblyexciting.I'm particularlypassionateaboutcreatingstudent-centered learningenvironmentsthatintegratemultipleSTEM disciplines.

EH:ILOVEseeingmystudentsapplytheirknowledgein practicalwaysthatIknowwilldirectlyinfluencetheir future.Seeingstudentsgothroughiterationsofthe EngineeringDesignProcessandtakeaprojectfrom ideationtofinalproductisawesometowitness,andit inspiresmetocontinue.Whenformerstudentsreachout andtellyouthatyoumadeadifferenceintheirlives,it servesasencouragementandmotivationtocontinuemy passionforSTEMandforteaching.

EH:Mycurrentgoalsaretocontinuebuildingmomentum forSTEMwithinourdistrict,mentorotherteachers,and serveasaresourceforSTEMprogramsacrossOklahoma. IamcommittedtoadvocatingforaccessibleSTEM educationforallstudentsandshowcasingtheincredible workofourstudents.Ialsohopetobecomemore involvedinthestateSTEMConsortiumandfurther strengthenmyconnectionswithintheSTEMcommunity.
Sinceearly2022,wehavebeenmakingprogresstowardrealizingourfive-yearstrategicplan, whichincluded109initiativesdesignedtoensurethethrivingofourSTEMecosystemandthe operationalmaturityofourorganization.
Asof2024,wehavecompleted39initiativesandareactivelyworkingon37more!Checkoutthe numberofinitiativesthathavebeencompletedorareinprogressbygoalbelow.
