EDITOR’S LETTER

BRIDES IN BLOOM

Hey, brides— Follow us on the web! Be sure to follow us on Twitter @tullemag, on Facebook (facebook.com/tullemag) and pin with us on Pinterest (pinterest.com/tullemag).

Have ideas? Let us know! I’d love to hear from you. Send me an email kate@tullemag.com or tweet me @minimagkate to share suggestions, thoughts, and ideas on this issue and those to come.

When I was looking through all of the weddings that sit on the pages of this issue of Tulle, I couldn’t help but notice one thing— they all incorporated beautiful blooms! Maybe it’s because it’s almost summer and we’re in the midst of a floral frenzy, but these bunches of buds really seem to bring it all together. In my opinion, there is truly nothing a bunch of roses or a lovely peony bouquet (or my personal favorite, hydrangeas) cannot liven up. From floral crowns to garlands to stunningly tall centerpieces or even simple bud vases on the tables, this issue is brimming with inspiration for brides-to-be planning their own upcoming nuptials. Plus, we’ve teamed up with some of the best experts from the wedding world to help you go beyond the blooms and make your planning process even easier. Take these tips from experts like Preston Bailey and David Tutera and file them away. We want you to relish the entire wedding journey and even allow yourself to stop and smell the roses along the way. I hope you enjoy our second issue of Tulle and find yourself as inspired as I am by all of its floral beauty.

PRESTON BAILEY SHARES HIS

PLANNING 101 Creating your dream wedding is a long process that sends many brides into a tizzy. But keep it simple— event planner extraordinaire Preston Bailey’s tips are here to help. Don’t forget to pick up his new book, Designing with Flowers, on sale now!

Plan your bouquet around the dress

Select room temperature foods

I have one simple rule for bouquets— If the bride is wearing an understated dress, you can allow for a more elaborate bouquet. The opposite also rings true. The more lavish the dress, the simpler the bouquet should be. You do not want to have your bouquet competing with your dress!

Select foods that can be served at room temperature— you never want to serve risotto for a wedding of 200. This is a dish that is best enjoyed warm.

Use local, seasonal blooms

I encourage my brides to create their own trends— I was recently at a wedding where the bride insisted on cutting her cake right after her first dance rather than at the end of the reception. I thought that made perfect sense! She allowed enough time for her cake to be cut and serve dessert to all 400 guests.

Flowers are much more cost effective during specific seasons. The best way to get the most out of a flower budget is by using local, seasonal flowers.

Create your own trends

Enjoy the day Enjoy yourself! I have seen too many brides miss out on their special day because they were too focused on vendors instead of trusting them to do their jobs. —prestonbailey.com

DAVID TUTERA ON GETTING PAST THE

I DO CHAOS Staying sane and organized while planning a wedding almost seems impossible, but Tulle has enlisted the help of celebrity wedding planner David Tutera to keep your road to the big I Do’s free of obstacles and headaches.

Do your homework ahead of time

Keep a wedding binder

Always do your research before reaching out to and meeting with vendors. If you have an idea of what you’re looking for, what you need, and what you don’t like, it will make it easier and as stress-free as possible for everyone. Recommendations from people you know and trust and portfolios from vendors are an absolute must so you can feel confident in your choice.

Keep all of your wedding planning “stuff” in one place, such as a dedicated binder. Staying organized this way will help you to know which elements still need your attention and what the status of longer term projects (such as having your dress altered) is.

Get inspired, gather photos Gather pictures from wedding blogs and sites like Pinterest to make an inspiration board for your nuptials. Refer back to your pictures throughout the process to make sure you’re staying on the right path. Having a clear vision will help you to remain focused and will make decision-making that much easier when the time comes! This is great for almost every aspect of your wedding, from printed materials and cakes to wedding gowns and bridal party gifts!

46 | tullemag. com

Delegate to friends and family Assign smaller tasks to close friends and family members to help you get to your big day. Stressing out because you just don’t have the time to find the perfect ribbon to wrap around your bouquet? Ask your maid of honor to source a couple of beautiful options for you so that you can shift your focus to finding an officiant that you and your fiancé click with, or some other larger detail.

Don’t be a bridezilla Know that something will likely not be 100% as planned on your big day, but the important thing to remember is that you’re getting married! —davidtutera.com

KARENA AND KATRINA OF TONE IT UP ON

BRIDAL FITNESS Don’t stress out over which strenuous fitness and diet plan you’ll need to squeeze into your gown. Trainers Karena and Katrina of Tone It Up share a fab timeline that can get any bride-to-be in shape for the big day.

3 MONTHS BEFORE THE BIG DAY

1 MONTH BEFORE

• Stick to your workouts! Set your alarm at least 4 times a week to get your morning workout in. Make sure to sweat and tone everyday! • Aim for 200 miles of walking, jogging, running, stair mill, elliptical, cycling or swimming by your wedding day! That’s an average of 2.2 miles/day. If cycling, divide your miles by 3. (ie: if you’re cycling 12 miles, log 4 miles toward your 200 mile goal) • Cut out all fake sugars! Say goodbye to chemicals that cause you to hold on to stubborn fat cells • Get clean and focus in on your nutrition. Carbs are vital! But cut out processed carbs (crackers, chips, white breads, sugary cereals, white pasa and candy). Stick to sweet potato, quinoa, brown rice, whole wheat wraps, oatmeal and whole grain cereals • Keep it natural! Kick out diet soda, unnatural flavored waters, Splenda packets, boxed diet foods, sweetened yogurt and sugarfree coffee creamers. Sub in coconut water, kombucha and Sugar in the Raw • Plan ahead! With planning, errands and stress, don’t forget to eat. Plan out your meals ahead of time

• Incorporate 3 cups of greens per day. This will help cleanse you, and get your skin in tip-top condition • Treat your workouts like an appointment. You wouldn’t skip your cake tasting or dress fitting! • Between all of your to do’s, squeeze in smoothies or juices with spinach or kale. You can replace one meal and one or two snacks a day with a smoothie or juice • Craving sweets at night? It’s tea time! Drink tea to help cleanse your body, curb cravings and make sure you don’t give into that sweet treat

48 | tullemag. com

1 WEEK BEFORE • Add lemon to your tea to burn extra fat • Sweat it out for an hour each day. Even if it’s a long walk! • Keep all meals after 2 P.M. lean and green —toneitup.com

JANA WILLIAMS ON WHAT MATTERS IN

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY Your wedding photos are the best way of remembering the greatest day of your life, so choose a photographer wisely. Chic shutterbug Jana Williams shares what you should ask before you book.

Know what you like, who you are

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Know your own style. The style of your wedding. Are you a classic, timeless, romantic bride or are you more into what’s trending and making statements and being unique? You’ll want to choose a photographer who fits your style.

If I were a bride today, here are a few things I would ask my photographer: How would you describe your style? Will you be directing me and my fiancé or will you be silently capturing moments? Will I receive a disc of images? How many images for an 8-hour day? Will the images be color-corrected? Will the images have a watermark? Will the images be high resolution? Will you have a second shooter? What is your price for additional hours if needed? Are you open to me sharing my Pinterest board with you? If you have not shot at the venue, would you be willing to come along on a walk-through? Do you have photography insurance? How long after the wedding before I receive the photos?

Get to know your photographer After narrowing down a few choices, make sure you meet the photographer. Coffee, Skype, or a phone call are all great. Personally, when I meet with a bride, we take the first 15 minutes or so just getting to know each other and talking about things that are not weddingrelated at all. Your wedding photographer should be someone you want to have a cup of coffee with; it’s very much attract and repel. I find that my brides are a lot like me or a lot like my friends. It makes sense because we are drawn to each other and like the same things.

50 | tullemag. com

Your photographer is out there Not everyone is a perfect match. Choose a person you trust and someone you know will go the extra mile to make sure you will be happy. You eat the cake, you hang the dress, but the photos are forever! —jana-williams.com

SONIA KASHUK KNOWS HOW TO CREATE

WEDDING DAY BEAUTY It’s the biggest day of your life and your wedding look should reflect that. Tulle asked makeup artist and founder of Sonia Kashuk Beauty Sonia Kashuk her tips for creating timeless bridal beauty.

Mind your skincare routine

Try your looks before the wedding

Use an exfoliating wash and moisturizer in the morning. Mini at-home facials with steaming and enriched serums are great for night. You should focus on improving the texture and finish of the skin because on your wedding day, you don’t want to wear a lot of makeup. If your skin is looking gorgeous, you’re already halfway there.

Always test the looks out beforehand— your wedding day is not the time to try something completely new. And most importantly, think about the timelessness of your look. Can it transcend the test of time? When you look back on this day 10 years from now, you want to still look modern and relevant.

Prep and prime your skin After you’ve put on your moisturizer, always begin with a primer. My Vitamin Serum Primer beautifully preps the skin for a flawless application of makeup. Another secret weapon would be my Brightening Powder, which can be used over almost anything to illuminate, blend, and brighten at the same time. False eyelashes that naturally enhance rather than appearing too artificial, will add a big wow factor to your wedding day look.

52 | tullemag. com

Don’t overdo your bridal makeup Oftentimes, I see people trying to make too much of a statement with their makeup that it overtakes the bride. You want the statement to be less about the makeup and more about the person. With all the hair and makeup, it can become so much and the bride ends up getting lost.

Keep treatments to a minimum You can do facials, but I wouldn’t go into any treatments within a week of your wedding. Just in case the skin behaves irregularly, you will want ample time for your skin to recover and be in its best shape. —soniakashuk.com

Bridesmaid Brunch

The moments leading up to your big day—from proposal to engagement party to rehearsal dinner—are another opportunity to celebrate those you love. Why not throw a bridal brunch to “propose” to your best gal pals, asking them to stand beside you when you say “I Do?” This bridal brunch offers all of the inspiration you need to put together a beautiful soiree, so pop that champagne! We’re currently obsessing over laser-cut acrylic pieces in lieu of traditional paper goods, so we incorporated them as the “Eat Me” cupcake toppers. The bride and bridesmaids were easy, breezy and carefree with their hair and Donna Morgan attire. They all had a blast sipping their ONEHOPE mimosas and rocking out to Lana Del Rey. Most importantly, the bride picked a creative and fun way to ask her girlfriends to be bridesmaids! The girls were given balloons to POP the question!”

The Classic

THE RECIPE

CLASSIC MINT JULEP There’s nothing quite like the classic mint julep. It may remind you of Derby Day, but this muddled cocktail is a refreshing addition to any cocktail hour.

INGREDIENTS • 2.5 oz. Kentucky bourbon whiskey • 2-3 sugar cubes • 2-4 tsp. water • 2-4 sprigs fresh mint leaves and stems • Crushed ice

METHOD • Muddle mint leaves, sugar cubes and water in a mint julep cup • Fill with ice and add bourbon • Top with more ice and garnish with a mint sprig

THE BONUS

Up the ante with fresh fruit ice cubes! Freeze strawberry or tangerine juice overnight in extra large ice cube mold and substitute for crushed ice. 64 | tullemag. com

Strawberry

THE RECIPE

STRAWBERRY JULEP How lovely would this strawberry cocktail be on a hot summer day? And if your wedding colors involve shades of red, even better!

INGREDIENTS • 2.5 oz. Kentucky bourbon whiskey • 1-2 sugar cubes • 2-4 tsp. water • 2-4 sprigs fresh mint leaves and stems • 2 c. fresh strawberry juice • Crushed ice

METHOD • Muddle sugar cubes and water in a Mint Julep Cup • Fill with ice, bourbon, and splash of strawberry juice • Top with more ice and garnish with sprig of mint and strawberry

+

FROM THE EDITOR I can picture these as a fun cocktail station at a reception or a create a “Julep Bar” with all three recipes for festive sips just after the ceremony.

Tangerine

THE RECIPE

TANGERINE JULEP No matter what month, the tangerine julep is a must-have at cocktail hour. We love the bright color, accessorized with an orange slice!

INGREDIENTS • 2.5 oz. Kentucky bourbon whiskey • 1-2 sugar cubes • 2-4 tsp. water • 2-4 sprigs fresh mint leaves and stems • 2 c. freshly squeezed tangerine juice • Tangerine peel • Crushed ice

METHOD • Muddle sugar cubes in water in a Mint Julep Cup • Fill with ice, bourbon and a splash of tangerine juice • Top with more ice and garnish with a mint sprig and slice of tangerine

+

FROM THE EDITOR Accessorize your julep cups with paper straws in your wedding colors, create custom cocktail stirrers and when it’s over, julep cups make great vases for fresh blooms!

WELCOME BAG

Throwing a fun wedding weekend for your family and friends? There is an art to crafting a well-curated welcome bag and Tulle has asked Kristin Alexander of Esoteric Events to give us the 411 of welcome bag arranging. PHOTOGRAPHY BY CARMEN SANTORELLI TIPS AND STYLING BY KRISTIN ALEXANDER, ESOTERIC EVENTS

TULLE HOW TO

KRISTIN ALEXANDER GIVES TULLE

THE WELCOME BAG 411 A fun surprise in their hotel rooms, a door-to-door delivery on the weekend of your wedding— welcome bags are one way to let your guests know they’re important. Event planner Kristin Alexander shares what should be placed inside.

Include items that you enjoy as a couple. It will help paint an even brighter picture of what you appreciate together!

Include wedding information Guests tend to forget where to be and when to be there, so this is a great way to remind them.

Pick a container that fits your day

Share your thanks

Whether it be a tote bag, box or basket, make sure your container coordinates with the look and feel of your special day.

Your guests will appreciate a handwritten welcome note, thanking them for joining you on your day.

Wine is always a good idea

Create a hotel list

Give your guests an easy way to unwind and de-stress upon their arrival. Tie in your big day by gifting wine that will be served at your reception.

If you have guests staying at multiple hotels, take the guesswork out of deliveries by creating a custom list for each hotel. And be sure to include a contact number in case of questions!

Don’t forget the snacks! After traveling, it is always nice to arrive to some food. I suggest covering all three bases to please all palates: sweet, salty and savory.

70 | tullemag. com

To deliver or not to deliver Ask hotels the cost for having each bag delivered to your guest rooms in advance. If the costs begin to add up, I suggest distributing them by hand to guests at the Welcome Party. —esotericevents.com

THROW A GARDEN PARTY THEMED

bridal shower RECIPES AND TIPS BY ANNETTE JOSEPH EXCERPTS FROM PICTURE PERFECT PARTIES {RIZZOLI NY )

72 | tullemag. com

Entertaining expert Annette Joseph believes throwing a garden party bridal shower can be as easy as simply going out into your garden. Her new book Picture Perfect Parties shows you how using florals and fauna from your own garden can be a beautiful and affordable option and now, we’re sharing them with you! “I like hydrangeas, tulips and ferns, herbs and branches,” said Joseph. “Collect vases and cake stands and place these florals all over your table.”

GARDEN PARTY MENU

A bridal shower is a great chance to serve a garden party menu. Dishes like stuffed zucchini flowers, crudites with dipping oil, fresh-fromthe-garden salad, and deconstructed raspberry cannoli can all be found in Joseph’s book, Picture Perfect Parties.

GARDEN GIFTS

Have guests bring gifts for the gardener, the bride and groom will appreciate the additions to their home and garden. You can also put together kitchen herb planters for guests to take home as parting gifts.

PERSONALIZE IT

Chalkboard planting pots are adorable and affordable (you can find some at West Elm). You can even put the guests name on each one with chalk, tie them with jute and set them at the door for guests to grab as they head home.

+

THE INVITE

The invitation can be a seed packet with a decorative tag tied on it with jute, including the shower specifics: date, time, place and garden gift suggestion.

THE TABLE SETTING

Use a burlap or rough linen table runner. Place napkin roll-ups in a galvanized bucket, napkins should be tied with jute. Use cake stands to add varied heights to your centerpieces and interest to your tablescape. Make centerpieces from flowers, branches and herbs from the garden. Add some burlap-covered lampshades over the table to add interest and height. Use decorative moss on the table.

JUST ADD BLOOMS

Add height and create a centerpiece for your buffet table using multiple cake stands of different colors and textures. I filled small vases with flowers from the garden to showcase the garden theme.

FROM THE EDITOR I can see guests in varying shades of green and white at this fun garden party shower. Or even ask them to wear sun hats!

The town is so charming with little boutiques, quaint restaurants, and art galleries... and it all sits right in the middle of the jungle alongside gorgeous beaches.
