WELCOME to the POPS

Dear Friends of the Pops,

Welcome to the 69th fall season of Music Under the Stars™ with the Tucson Pops Orchestra and Maestro Khris Dodge! I am privileged to serve as the new President of the Board of Directors. We have an exciting season of performances planned for your enjoyment.

You are the reason we are here. It is our privilege to present concerts of great music, performed by some of the best orchestral musicians in the area, and it is all possible because of your attendance and support. Thank you.

This fall it’s all about celebrating the tremendous talents in our community. Tucson truly is rich in world class artists that we will continue to bring to our stage each season.

Our opening concert on September 22nd is dedicated to some of the great movie and Broadway classics. Local vocalists Tyler Wright, and Erin Anderson along with talents from The Circus Academy of Tucson, will perform with the Tucson Pops for a great evening. Take a trip down memory lane with us on September 29th as we highlight two of our orchestra talents, Oboist Christian Hill and Trumpeter Byron Yount who will present a selection of timeless classics and Tucson Pops favorites. October 6th will feature a remarkable guest artist and violinist Heather “Lil’ Mama” Hardy along with other local talents performing with the orchestra.

Thank you again for your support in helping us to continue to bring this beloved Tucson tradition to our community.

Tyler Wright studied musical theater at Brigham Young University before returning home to his native Arizona. Tyler has received local MAC and Carmen award nominations for his performances in SAPAC’s productions of Hot Mikado and [title of show]. He also produced, directed, and starred in the MAC award nominated Gutenberg! The Musical! Tyler performs with many other Tucson performing groups including Gaslight Theater, Khris Dodge Entertainment and Alex Mack Music.

Quiet City was originally composed in 1939 as the music to accompany Irwin Shaw’s play of the same name. Several of Aaron Copland’s friends urged him to extract the melodic content for a concert work, which he did in 1941. The concert version is for the instrumentation of trumpet, English horn and strings. The main character of Shaw’s play has anglicized his Jewish surname, which haunts him every time he hears his brother practicing jazz on the trumpet. More broadly, the austere call-andresponse melodies, occasionally intertwining, represent the insecurities of modern society loosely depicted as lonely musicians practicing in adjacent buildings in New York City. Quiet City is dedicated to Ralph Hawkes, of Boosey and Hawkes, who published it. It is a hauntingly beautiful masterpiece which has been recorded numerous times.

Byron Yount began his musical studies with his father, a professional trombonist. After free lancing for a decade in the New York City area, he eventually earned a Masters of Music at the University of Rhode Island while an active duty member of Navy Band Northeast. Byron landed in Tucson pursuing a Doctorate from the University of Arizona as the teaching assistant in applied trumpet. He served as Principal Trumpet of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Sonora, México, the New Jersey Pops Orchestra, and the New Jersey Chamber Music Society Brass Quintet, which he founded. In more recent times, he has performed as an invited guest musician with The Phoenix Symphony, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Guanajuato, México, and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Christian Hill is a graduate of Northern Arizona University with bachelor’s degrees in music performance and music education. As an undergraduate, Mr. Hill played for the Flagstaff Symphony, Summer Festival Orchestra and was a winner of the 1994 NAU solo competition. After completing his bachelor’s degrees at NAU, he performed for the Arizona Opera, Sinfonia Da Chiesa, Tucson Symphony, Foothills Woodwind Quintet and is currently playing with the Crowded Quartet and the Tucson Repertory Orchestra. He began playing for the Tucson Pops in 1998 and became principal oboist in 2019. Mr. Hill teaches band and orchestra for the Amphitheater school district.

Heather “Lil’ Mama” Hardy began studying piano at six and violin at nine. In 1983, she was accepted into the Manhattan School of Music for both instruments but chose violin, studying under Raphael Bronstein. While at school, she played in the subway and collaborated with blues and rock musicians, developing her unique violin improvisation style. In 1984, she toured with the punk band The False Prophets and worked with Allen Ginsberg and other New York bands. After moving to Tucson in 1990, she joined the Sam Taylor Band, becoming both a violinist and vocalist. Her soulful violin solos helped the band win the 1995 Arizona Blues Showdown and place second in the International Blues Talent Competition. In 1996, Heather formed the Lil’ Mama Band, returning to New York in 1997. She was inducted into the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame in 2000.

Heather currently plays with her Lil’ Mama Band and her own production “MORE VIOLIN… 100 years of the Violin in Music,” as well as New York artists, Christine Santelli, and Kerry Kearney and others.

Music Under the Stars™ History

The Tucson Pops Orchestra has been providing outdoor concerts to the Tucson and southern Arizona community since 1955. Founded by Georges DeMeester and Ernest Hoffman with 22 musicians, the orchestra has grown to 50 professional musicians and performs to audiences of up to 8,500. The orchestra performed in various locations around Tucson before settling in Reid Park’s DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center. In 1973, Charles “Bucky” Steele took over as conductor, followed by László Veres in 1997. In the spring of 2022, László Veres retired and passed the baton to Khris Dodge, who began his tenure in the fall of 2022. The Tucson Pops Orchestra continues to fulfill its mission of providing Music Under the Stars™ to the Tucson and southern Arizona communities with support from Tucson Parks and Recreation Department, corporate partners, and Friends of the Pops.

The Tucson Pops Orchestra’s Board of Directors is excited to share a closer look at what it takes to bring our concerts to life. Each year, we work with a budget of around $137,500, and every concert costs about $15,000 to produce.

We’re powered by the incredible support of Friends of the Pops, along with contributions from the Tucson Department of Parks and Recreation, corporate sponsors, and generous grants. Your support fuels not just tonight’s concert but ensures the music continues for years to come.

Whether you’re a member of Friends of the Pops, a corporate sponsor, or someone who contributes before the show or during intermission, you make a real difference. Thank you for being part of the magic of “Music Under the Stars” with the Tucson Pops Orchestra!

HELP US SUSTAIN THE MUSIC!

Your generous donations can truly make a difference to our mission to bring high-quality concerts to the public.

We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the joy and inspiration of live music, regardless of their financial circumstances. By contributing what you can, you’ll be paying it forward for those who may not have the means to do the same. Your support will ensure that no one is turned away from our community-driven events. Every dollar counts, and your contribution will directly support our mission to make the magic of music accessible to everyone.

Give what you can and help us continue to create memorable concert experiences for our community. We are dependent on individual patrons like yourself, as support from sponsors only covers about 30% of the actual cost to provide these concerts. Your generosity and support are greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Contributing Has Extra Benefits

At each concert those who give $25 or more receive one entry in the event raffle for each $25 contributed. Raffle prizes include gift cards to local restaurants and entertainment venues.
