Design strategies: Color: • Certain color can triggering response.

• Neutral color palette, natural tone and minimal constrast.

• Color can reinforce navigation pathway.

Material: • Natural material: wood flooring, natural frabic.

St. Albert’s Hall is located on the Saint Joseph’s Univeristy Campus on the Merion side. The building was acquired by the university in October 1958.

The building located on Lapsley road and Lincoln Highway The Building Across the street from it is Jordan Hall and to the side is Xavier Hall.

The surrounding area is full of lush greenery and tall trees, and it is located on a quiet street set back from the main road and traffic.

St. Albert’s Hall is one of the converted houses on Lapsley Lane that is going to be used for residence housing for students of the ASPIRE program.

Entryway: Small space that had little to no purpose other than allowing guests to walk in. Very plain and dull looking.

1st Floor: One common space with 3 bedroom configurations. Dull lights and colors that felt more like a hospital room than a dorm room.

Not a lot of utilization of the space other than bedrooms and the one common space.

2nd Floor: All bedrooms that were tightly configured and felt cramped. This part of the building felt more private but too cramped for being all bedrooms. 2 single bathrooms on this floor.

3rd Floor: All bedrooms that were a little more open of a space but still private. This area was also dull and felt more like a prison cell then a bedroom for students.

Originally, St. Albertls Hall is a chapel in 1733, was later founded in 1851. The Structure of the building consist of wood framing for the walls and flooring. The exterior and the cloumn consist of stone veneer with a large grassy landscape. The Interior floor, walls, and ceiling are assembled by several plank of wood .

The main circulation in the building at the center where the stair are located it able to let people to access them for each level within the building. The emergency exit located on the backside of the building along with emergency stair but it not acessable for foot traffic to the building. The first floor is the most high circulation predominatley, as going up to the building the level the circulation decrease.

The existing program for st. Albert’s Hall contains 11 bedrooms, The bedroom spread thourought on each level. Each bedroom have 2 or 3 beds., 4 on the first floor, 4 on the second floor and 3 on the third floor include a closet and have access to shared bathroom. All bedrooms that were tightly configured and felt cramped.

Enso - Circle of Togetherness Geometrical Interplay, Individuality In Zen Buddhism, this hand-drawn ink circle symbolizes absolute enlightenment, infinity, strength, elegance, the universe, and the void. A Japanese word meaning circle, when drawn with an opening, it can suggest that imperfection an inherent part of existence. Enso- Circle of Togetherness Within this idea of enso, our projects goal is to create uniques and different experiences throughout the building while connecting similar design element using the expression of Enso. By using the interaction of geometric and organic shape and structure.

Private Vs Public space, in the space on the first floor is to promote socialization by incorporating the concept of enso and using harmonizing interplay, However, as your travel up to the second and third floors. Our goal is to promote individuality and give user the opportunity to use and transform the space as they see fit. While the space on the first floor are more geometrical the second and third floor become more subdued.

The First Floor of the building is used for Public space containing a lounge space with movable funiture, game room for collabortative gaming opportunity, study area for collective learning and cafe space. Within these space, all light are adjustable to best suite the user personal preference.

The Second Floor of the building is used for Semi-private space that mostly concludes of bedroom for the user that use adaptable funiture so the user can move pieces around to their liking and for a better funtionality of the space for their needs.

The Third Floor of the building is used for Private space and stricly bedroom.

This is space that is most quiet within the building to allow the most comfortability for the user in the bedorrm areas to have and escape form the busy first floor.

Propsed First Floor Plan The first floor will be converted to a public space that features a full kitchen and cafe area, a lounge area that leads into a game room and quiet sapce, bathrooms down the entryway hallway that sits across the laundry room as well as an RA or ADA private bedroom and bathroom. The public spaces allow the students to have more options for their day to day preference and to promote indivuality.

Lounge Space: This area is a transformable space with movable furniture that accomodates to what the students need and want, along with cut outs in the walls that fit geometrically that allow for more seating. This room functions as a community driven space to get the students to interact with others.

Lighting: The lighting all throughout the first floor is manually controlled in order to allow for the students to change brightness for their individual needs all throughout the space.

Acoustics: In the cut outs that are all thorughout the walls in the first floor, there is moss that is placed that acts as an acoustic barrier that helps to reduce noise from the public floor.

Cafe Space: This area is a multipurpose space that allows students to cook, study, hang out or relax. Within the space there is an opportunity for each individual student to create a more public or private experience with movable backings to the booth seating and lighting control to allow full comfortability and conformability to the students needs and wants.

The lighting on the first floor uses all manually adjustable lights in order to accomodate to each individual within their perspective spaces. This will allow for each individual to feel comfortable in their environment wherever they may be within the first floor.

Outdoor seating area allows the students to enjoy views from outside of the building and to relax in an outdoor setting.

Cafe space with multiple seating options to allow for each student to feel comfortable. Multiple seating options give the students the chance for being more public or private in this space with the backs of the booth seating being movable.

Entrance/ Foyer • The Entrance space to be more inviting and have a natural elements. We use wood textures and Green Moss walls to add that feeling into the space. While also using navy and white on the curved arches hallway and wall cutouts.

• Througout the space there are curves wall cutting to help guide the user through the space with organic shapes.

• This space meant to be a transition space to guide to the more spaces added to the first floor. As you travel up the space become more private.

Proposed: Divide material with the green wall that are geometrical with curve and line.

• Moss walls are a healthy choice as they help cleanse the air, reduce noise and add a natural design element to a space without adding clutter.

• Moss is an incredibly resilient and versatile plant. It doesn’t need fertilizer or much water to grow and it’s great for water filtration and erosion control.

Inspiration

• Moss walls don’t require ongoing care in the way of irrigation, trimming, or feeding, they do require a minimal level of attention.

• Moss walls can take on many different shapes, and the moss itself can be dyed virtually any color. Different types of moss and faux plants can be added for a very interesting effect.

Different choices of colors and patterns are nearly unlimited.

• The best air cleansing and oxygenating capabilities of any plant. This is due in part to the vast surface area of moss plants. Moss is essentially a “green lung,” capturing all sorts of pollutants, allergens and harmful particles

Kitchen/ Cafe Space Convert the downstairs bedroom into a kitchen and cafe space.

• Flexible space that can be more private or public space.

• Booth types seating rather large tables with the ability to move the table or backings of the booth to be more private to create a small work space for themselves within the space.

Lounge Area The lounge area is a gathering spot for all users to come and be in each other company. There is a multitude of seating options that are movable to the users liking. the cut outs in the wall continue through this space and provides more seating areas for the users and caters to comfortability and uniqueness.

Gaming Area The gaming area is a small space where users can come together to game and collaboratively with others in the house. there are a multitude of seating arragement to allow for comfortability in the space and allows the users to have a more diverse option of seating.

Study/ Quiet Area The study area is a small space with cut outs in the walls to allow for more seating and more privacy. The funiture placed within the space between the wall cut outs allow for a more quiet and private experience to the users. There are two full desks set up to allow for a larger space to work within the study area to give option to the users as to where they feel more comfortable studying in.

Lounge Area Converted the lounge area into the main gahtering spot of the first floor social spaces.

Propsed Second Floor Plan The second floor is intedned to be a more private area with multiple bedrooms in place. There are a vareity of bedroom options that go from four person berooms, three person bedrooms and a single person bedroom on this floor to allow students to have options when entering the building.

Four Person Bedroom: This bedroom has collapsable doors that allow for a more private or public space for the user to individually decide while still being able to socialize with the others in the bedroom.

Three Person Bedroom: This bedroom promotes more socialiation within the space. The beds and desks themselves are movable this space allows for students to move furniture around to their preference.

Single Person Bedroom: This bedroom allows for more privacy for students who may not feel comfortable being around others all the time, giving them a space for themselves to allow for comfortability.

The lighting in the second floor is limited to allow for students to bring in lights that fit more to their needs in their space and to allow for creativity of the students. The lights in the bedrooms allow for each student to manually change the brightness to their liking, while the lights in the hallways and bathrooms are the same brightness when turned on and cannot be changed to keep the walkways and bathroom safe.

The three person bedroom has custom made beds and desks that are movable to be changed to the students needs.

The second floor bathroom features three showers, and three toilets that is gender neutral and allows all students to use.

The four person bedroom features movable and collapsible wall that can make rooms more public or private based on the students desire, as well as having movable furniture to allow a variety of options.

The single person bedroom has movable furniture that gives students a variety of room configuration options.

Plug in dresser twin bed combination. The Dressor at the end of the bed can be opened and used on all three sides, so if one side is blocked or can no be accessed it doesn’t restrict the user onthe orientation of the plugin. The bed come in different variation depending on the users need and wants for there individual wants.

Plug in flexible desk is meet to be that can change and adapt to the user. The desk has two shelfs to allow for storage. We wanted the desk to have the ability to be more open or allow for more privacy depending on how the user wants to use it. We adding in two side extensions that can either be both folded down, up, or have one side up and one down. we also added in two addition pull outs under the side extensions to allow for even more space. Finally, we added in an electrical strip into the main desk area to allow the user to change or plugin whatever they seem fit.

3 People Bedroom Convert the playroom on the second floor into 3 person bedroom: • Student allow to choose what type of bed and desk to change to student need.

• The desk and bed are movable allow student to arrange the funiture to their prefence.

• The purpose of the desk is to block and give privacy between student.

• Single Bathroom let student have some privacy: for student who not feel comfortable using neutral bathroom.

Propsed Third Floor Plan The third floor is the most private and quiet floor in the building. There is a single bathroom that will be used for the occupants on this floor. The furniture is moveable to conform to the students wants and needs and allows for each individual to create their own space to their liking.

These two bedrooms are both customizable to the students wants and needs as the furniture is movable with enough closet space for both occupants.
