Every morning when I arrive at Seton I see students getting ready for class; colleagues preparing for their day’s work; parents saying a quick goodbye to their students as each head out on their own journeys. Isn’t it amazing that while we each have a specific agenda and our own “to do” list for the day, our tasks will eventually meld together and become a part of God’s much larger plan for us?
Like so many pieces of a puzzle, we all have a distinct purpose and value within this life. However it is not until the day is done—or the puzzle is finished—that we can truly comprehend the magnitude of what can be accomplished when we all come together for the greater good.
Patricia Collinsrunning on our own daily treadmills and getting nowhere—different parts with no relation to the whole. I am proud to belong to a community that works well together, recognizing the value of individuals while having faith that as a group there is nothing we cannot accomplish.
What an exciting time to be part of the Seton Catholic Family! As we begin preparing for Lent, and rejoice in changes to the mass which bring us closer to God, Seton Catholic Preparatory High School continues to evolve and move into the future.
As President of the Board of Trustees, I have the privilege and honor of witnessing the overwhelming support of Catholic education firsthand, from teachers and faculty, to students and parents, from alumni to our many volunteers. Individuals at every level come together to serve as “one body in Christ.” It is very humbling to be surrounded by such a talented and dedicated group of individuals.
One of the top priorities for the Trustees this year has been to reach out to Seton’s many individual boards to get us all on the same
As many of you know, Seton Catholic Prep has been involved in a schoolwide strategic planning process. Every department and many of our clubs and organizations have come together to review their individual missions and goals. The groups look back at what they have been doing and then they discuss and evaluate how to make improvements in order to move forward. The end result will be a renewed plan for the future and the betterment of our school. They will implement their plan—as a team. Without this process, we would all be
page so we may better serve Seton to fulfill her mission. Recognizing the God-given gifts and talents of Seton’s many boards over the past several years, each one has developed a strategic plan to serve as a roadmap to help drive their mission and purpose. Each strategic plan emphasizes collaboration, assigns tasks and outlines targeted goals and benchmarks to build on Seton’s Past, improve Seton’s Present, and shape Seton’s Future. We now work together to accomplish more!
Think about the many parts that make up our community. There are thousands of alumni who gave of themselves as students leaving their unique and unbreakable threads in the fabric of Seton’s history. There are the scores of generous benefactors who have given of their treasure enabling us to build our new facilities, ensuring that their school continues moving forward. There are teachers and staff members who devote each day to providing a solid college prep education within a faith-filled community, focusing on academic excellence, leadership and loving service to others— in other words, a meaningful and strong Catholic education.
“We are many parts but one body, and we all belong to each other.” We are Seton Catholic Preparatory!
Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts but one body, and we all belong to each other. In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well.
As a result of collaboration, all of Seton’s boards (1) meet bi-annually as a group to share and report; (2) have established a mechanism for board members to access other boards’ minutes, projects and reports and enhance collaboration and synergy; (3) have recognized significant increases in Seton’s stewardship and endowments; (4) have begun developing community service projects—like serving at St. Vincent de Paul—to serve Christ by being a good and kind neighbor and to lead by example; and (5) continue to promote Seton as the
East Valley’s premier college preparatory high school. These accomplishments are just the beginning to better align our many constituencies and forge forward with a more collaborative and dynamic vision.
Seton’s alumni are the lifeblood of the foundation of Seton Catholic Preparatory High School. As we grow, traditions and contributions of our esteemed alumni will continue to be forged in the strategic plans moving forward.
May 2012 bring you and your loved ones health, happiness, and God’s blessings. BOARD OF TRUSTEES
On a personal note as a Seton alumnus, I thank Seton’s founders, religious, educators, staff, students and parents. Seton’s diverse student body, student-to-faculty ratio and inclusive character allowed me to experience exceptional academics, athletics, and the arts. With age, I appreciate the unique opportunity Seton afforded me to come closer to God, develop lifelong friendships, and shape the leader I am today.
Seton Catholic Preparatory High School is more than a group of buildings. We are a community of individuals –each with his or her own role to play—each with his or her own unique set of talents and gifts—each fulfilling a need. We are parents, teachers, students, administrators, staff, alumni, benefactors, priests and religious. We are artists, musicians, athletes, intellectuals, involved citizens, medical professionals, attorneys, business men and women, and religious and civic leaders from varied ethnic backgrounds, Catholic and non-Catholic alike. The connecting thread that forever winds itself amongst us is the Seton Catholic Prep experience.
Seton Catholic Prep is its founders The Seton Catholic Prep experience began with the Rev. Joseph N. Patterson, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church from 1938-1958. Chandler was then a primarily agricultural community, and the parishioners of St. Mary’s were predominately Hispanic migrant workers and their families. Some of these families went on to become key visionaries in the development of the City of Chandler, however ethnic prejudices at the time made obtaining an education at the local public schools difficult, if not impossible, for the children of these migrant workers. Fr. Patterson and his parishioners decided that these children deserved an excellent education, that this education should be rooted in Catholic values, and that all should be welcome regardless of sex, race or creed. That was the beginning of the Seton Catholic Prep community spirit.
On the first day of his freshman year at Seton, my son came home and said, “We prayed at the beginning of every class!” Having received K-8 public school instruction this revelation came as a bit of a surprise to both my children. But that daily prayer has provided a foundation during their very formative teen years. It was also the first of many challenges, big and small, presented to my kids at Seton. It was apparent from the start that some of the classes were going to be a challenge. The Seton staff and faculty set high expectations. Among those were the expectations as a current and future role model, a leader, an adult. Challenging the students to act maturely, take their studies seriously, and be fully responsible prepare them to become exceptional young adults. Inspired and motivated my kids rose to the challenges, ready for most obstacles and full of confidence. And, though they may not realize it now, those challenges and high expectations, including the power of daily prayer, will serve them well. When presented with adversity in their lives they will be equipped with the tools and experience to overcome.
Through the tireless efforts of Fr. Patterson and the Hispanic migrant families of St. Mary’s Parish, a Catholic high school was built in downtown Chandler, just east of the railroad tracks on what is now Chandler Boulevard. The school was named for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, foundress of the first parochial school in America and the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, and opened its doors under the name of Seton High on September 13, 1954. Two diocesan priests and two Sisters of Charity served as faculty, and in four short years, 22 students graduated. In the school’s 57 year existence, others have joined with our founders to leave their own indelible marks on Seton Catholic Prep’s history.
Seton Catholic Prep is its priests and religious. As the administration and families worked to build the physical campus, progress was also made on the mission of providing students with a strong Catholic education. Since the beginning of the school’s journey in 1954, a total of 35 Sisters of Charity have served our community as educators and administrators with Sr. Marie Theresa
also perform exemplarily on standardized tests. Most students continue on to college with one hundred percent of the graduating class of 2011 continuing their education at the college level. Faculty dedication to the school’s mission of Catholic values in action is evident in the smiles and tears all around as each year the graduating class walks out of Baccalaureate mass with their teachers in the aisle offering congratulations and well wishes as they pass.

I am grateful that my parents made the sacrifices to send my sisters and me to Seton. I had the opportunity to participate in numerous activities and sports, but perhaps more important was the family atmosphere with an emphasis on growing as a young Catholic woman. I was lucky that many of my friends at Seton had older siblings that were Seton alumni. I saw them at football and basketball games, Cinco de Mayo festivals and retreats at Tepeyac. The bonds they made at Seton continued years after they graduated and I recognized I was making the same connections and memories with my own classmates and teammates. Today, some of my closest and most loyal friends are those I made 27 years ago at Seton. When I first became involved in the alumni association, I had no idea it would become so meaningful. I was drawn to give back by memories and experiences with families who made up the foundation of Seton: the Mendozas, the Raels, and the Gutierrez family; the Gummels, the Barrets, the Eubanks family and the Valenzuelas.
I strongly believe in the vision of the school and I have loved connecting with former classmates. As a part of the Alumni Hall of Fame Committee, and now Chairperson of the Seton Alumni Advisory Council, I am excited to recognize alumni and Seton supporters that make our school a place to be proud of. From Seton I gained lifelong friendships, a challenging education, a strong belief and personal growth in my Catholic faith and a desire to give back like those before me.
Seton Catholic Prep parents of today are much like those hard working founding families who years ago desired an excellent education rooted in Catholic values for their children and were willing to sacrifice to make it possible.

Rishel currently on staff. The school has also been fortunate to have four priests and four brothers serve as principal. Currently, Fr. Will Schmid serves as a teacher and chaplain and celebrates daily Mass in our chapel. All school masses held once per month are an opportunity for the entire community to come together to celebrate mass on campus. Campus Ministry coordinates additional spiritual opportunities through Kairos retreats, Reconciliation Services, weekly confession opportunities, and monthly exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Christian service, values in action, is completed by our students in the school community and beyond in parishes and local non-profit agencies.
Seton Catholic Prep is its top notch faculty. Forty-four teachers and four counselors have an average of more than 15 years’ experience in education. Two teachers hold doctoral degrees. Five staff members are alumni. These educators work to provide what Fr. Patterson and the founding families determined necessary at the outset—to provide an excellent education to the school’s students. Our students are the recipients of numerous awards and honors and
Seton Catholic Prep is its students. Every fall a new group of students join our upperclassmen bringing their youth, enthusiasm, intelligence, diversity, ambitions and questions, reinvigorating our community. They make new friends and throw themselves into their studies. These new students, and all of our students, are encouraged to participate in athletics, fine arts, and the many clubs offered in an effort to help our students discover and develop their talents and passions to become well rounded individuals. Our students are further challenged to learn about their faith and to become active participants in their own faith journeys. Seton Catholic Prep students are exceptional.
Seton Catholic Prep is our students’ parents and grandparents. Seton Catholic Prep parents of today are much like those hard working founding families who years ago desired an excellent education rooted in Catholic values for their children and were willing to sacrifice to make it possible. Current parent sacrifices of time and treasure ensure that the daily needs of the school are met and that the school’s vision and mission will continue to serve families in the future. Individual families, and the Seton Catholic Prep community at large, are strengthened through the relationships that are born and nurtured through these endeavors. Many alumni make the same choice as their
Catholic Preparatory High School through Beth Pattock, a teacher at Seton. My wife and I own Lamar Studios Photography and Beth brought one of her daughters in for First Communion photographs and later all three children for family photography.
Beth told me all about Seton and what a great school it is. I had attended a large public school in southern California and was interested in why people would pay to send their kids to a private school.
Since Beth liked our photography and she was the yearbook advisor she asked if I would be interested in photographing the seniors at Seton and, as they say, the rest is history.
At first I thought of the photography as only another job. However over the many years of working with Seton, I have talked with hundreds of moms, dads and students about their experience and have seen an enthusiasm and commitment that is contagious. I am “hooked” on Seton and have been for many years.
I spend a lot of time at Seton photographing sports and other events at the school and with seniors at our studio. I have gone from just being a photographer of Seton kids to becoming a believer in Seton and what it stands for.
I often tell others about how great Seton is to the point that my sister enrolled my niece Morgan four years ago and she is graduating this year. As I reflect back I am a bit jealous and wish I had could have gone to high school there and had the Seton experience. It is a wonderful place for teens to not only be educated but also grow into adults and be prepared for university and life.
When I give to Seton, whether in volunteering or with a monetary donation, I do so happily knowing that support a great school and am contributing to the lives of our future generation. I am more and more impressed each year with the “Seton Family” and am honored to be a part of that family.
If a student is looking for a school that will challenge them academically, help them grow in their spirituality, and become part of a close-knit community of students and faculty then Seton should be their choice.
Seton has taught me so much in the past four years and has prepared me for my future. The teachers are here to help their students succeed and are always willing to take the extra step to make sure they do.
For me, a big part of Seton is the Catholic faith and how as students we live and grow in our faith. Starting every class with a prayer is so special and unique. It reminds me of what a blessing it is to be able to go to this Catholic school. As students we hope to carry on Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton’s charisms of faith, courage, determination, and love. Once a month, students and faculty gather as one to celebrate mass, as the body in Christ.
To be a part of a small student body is a rare high school experience and I have been given so many opportunities at Seton. I was able to play a sport all through high school and get involved in clubs on campus. I love that I can walk around campus and see familiar faces. I am always greeted with a smile not only from students but from teachers. I get the opportunity to know others and it is comforting seeing the same familiar faces every day. If a student wants to be prepared for college, to be given the chance to get involved in school, and to live out their Catholic faith, Seton is their best choice!
parents and choose to continue weaving that connecting thread of the Seton Catholic Prep experience into the next generation by sending their own children to the school. Our Seton parents and grandparents are an important part of the Seton family.
Seton Catholic Prep is our alumni “Once a Sentinel, Always a Sentinel” is not just a motto—it’s a fact. Alumni are a vital part of our community. Current students stand on the shoulders of every previous member of the Seton Catholic Prep community, including alumni, and alumni involvement is encouraged, welcomed and valued. This publication is an effort to keep our alumni up to date with the many activities happening on campus and to issue an invitation to our alumni to come back to campus and take in an athletic event, attend a play or attend our annual Seton After Dark event. Our alumni are valued members of the Seton community and are always welcome on campus and at school events. We’re proud of you!
Seton Catholic Prep is our community of believers The school could not survive without the gifts of our benefactors. Our benefactors are current and past parents and grandparents, alumni, businesses and foundations who believe in, and wish to be a part of, our mission. The financial contributions of our benefactors ensure that the mission established by Fr. Patterson and those founding Hispanic migrant worker families—to provide an excellent education rooted in Catholic values that enables students to compete in and contribute to the world in which we live—continues.
Just as the City of Chandler, and indeed, the entire East Valley, has grown and changed through the years, so too, has Seton Catholic Prep. The school has relocated from its original site and has persevered through many challenges. Classes resumed in full force just four days after a fire in 1980 threatened to destroy the

school’s very existence, and the campus has been targeted by vandals. Financial pressures have been faced and overcome, due in large part, to the spirit of the Seton community and the ever present determination to provide a Catholic education to all who desire one. Buildings have been added to accommodate the increasing number of families desiring a Seton Catholic Prep education and experience for their children. Clubs, sports and a fine arts program have been added. The school was named to the National Catholic High School Honor Roll in 2010. “Catholic” was added to the school’s name to clarify our mission to provide a Catholic education to our students, and a shift to a primarily college preparatory curriculum further prepares students, allowing them to dream bigger than ever before. This curriculum shift prompted the change to our current name, Seton Catholic Preparatory High School.
Tom Darby current faculty member
The faculty at Seton Catholic is most blessed because we teach in an environment that honors God, demands high standards both personal and academic, and where the entire Seton community-family, student, staff, and faculty--stand together as a committed team. Our mission is to graduate the best prepared students into adulthood able to face ensuing challenges as responsible citizens and in “loving service to others.” Such an environment demands the very best of us faculty, yet grants us the freedom to bring out the best in ourselves. As faculty, we are privileged to have full use of the school to help achieve God’s purpose in each student’s life. We integrate faith in God into academic lessons while opening the material and spiritual realities of God’s universe. Seton’s programs of study and pedagogy are very rigorous, permitting the promotion of high student performance. The Seton faculty is free to challenge students to perform at the loftiest levels. Benjamin Franklin has said, “Nothing is of more importance for the public weal, than to form and train up youth in wisdom and virtue.”
A strong rapport between faculty and parents is crucial to the quality of classroom instruction and student growth. Such rapport is built on the shared belief that the primary responsibility for a child’s education lies with the parents/guardians. We educators facilitate this process, serving as instruments in this shared responsibility.
A union of kindred spirits, both learned and learning, comprises a major requisite for the success of our school. Our foundational belief in God, freedom to challenge students, and total community involvement undergird our success in meeting our responsibilities.

In early January, five young alumni joined Seton seniors for the First Annual Senior/Young Alumni Forum! The young alums were invited to campus to talk about what it’s REALLY like to go off to college and answered questions from the seniors about their experiences. An example of the topics covered:
• Is college freedom a blessing or a burden?
•What are your thoughts on dorm life?
•Did you feel prepared for your college studies?
•What’s it like to be away from home and family?
This new event was hosted by the Advancement Office and the Guidance Counseling Department. Next year, we hope to add a second group to the discussion—parents of alumni talking with parents of seniors! Watch for the fall edition of the Sentinel Shield for date and details.

Seton alumni clearly hold an important place in the history of our school and are the strongest link with that history. The Board of Trustees and the Seton administration are committed to preserving the alumni legacy and to honoring the role of alumni by maintaining an ongoing connection between alumni and their alma mater.
To that end, principal Pat Collins has charged the Advancement Office with formalizing and supporting an alumni program. A key component of that program will be the Alumni Advisory Council.
This Council, formerly known as the Hall of Fame Committee and ably led by Nicole Harrison ’88, will represent all alumni of Seton in strengthening and enhancing the alumni connection with the school. Nicole will remain as Chair and current council members are Mark Bustos ’87 and Dennis Clinch ’77. We would like to expand this group to include members from all decades of graduates.
If you are interested in serving, please contact the Advancement Office via email at setonalumni@ setonchs.org or call 480.963.1900 x2006 for additional information. We look forward to your input and help as Seton moves forward in the 21st century.
We’ve created a council committed to preserving the alumni legacy and to honoring the role of alumni by maintaining an ongoing connection between alumni and their alma mater.

Dear Friends,
The following letter of thanks was sent to me by a teacher in a local Pre-Kindergarten program. Seton Catholic Prep is grateful for the selfless commitment of our staff and students to go above and beyond to do God’s work within our community. The students at Bethany Learning Center experienced a day to remember thanks to the generosity of Matt Kochis and our Seton students.

Seton Catholic Preparatory High School is pleased to announce it has joined its fellow diocesan Catholic high schools in membership to the Canyon Christian Schools Consortium (CCSC), which is a partnership with Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. The school’s goal in joining the consortium is to provide its students, parents, alumni and staff with the following opportunities:
• High school students will receive a $5,000 (on-campus housing) or $2,500 (off-campus housing) scholarship at GCU per year for each year of attendance at Seton Catholic Prep. This could save students up to $20,000 on college tuition over the course of four years.
• Parents of Seton students and current faculty and staff members are eligible for a 15% discount on tuition for online undergraduate, graduate or doctoral degree programs at Grand Canyon University. (Scholarships available for campus-based programs.)
• Grand Canyon University will provide preferential employment consideration to Seton Catholic Prep and other CCSC memberschool parents and alumni.
Seton Catholic Prep looks forward to this new partnership and the benefits it will provide to teachers, parents, alumni, and most importantly, our students. For more information about the consortium and benefits to Seton Catholic Prep students, parents, faculty and staff, please visit: www.gcu.edu/ccsc.
