Dear Friends,
The 2012-2013 school year is upon us. As I reflect on my role as Seton Catholic’s principal, I recognize that I am privileged to have the opportunity to lead an exceptional faculty and staff in shaping the lives of our extraordinary students. The Class of 2012 stands as a testament to our mission, with 108 graduates earning over $1.5 million dollars in academic and athletic scholarships.
This year we welcomed in the Class of 2016! The class of 166 freshmen is one of the largest ever to join our community. Each year, Seton Catholic emphasizes one of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s charisms. This year’s focus is on the charism of determination. In everything we do, our focal point will be on how determination can play a more prominent role in our daily lives.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton possessed the determination to fulfill the need for parochial education in America and the fortitude to see it through to its reality.
Widowed at an early age, she faced the rearing of her five children with valor and founded our beloved Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, the order of sisters who helped to make Seton Catholic possible. We are blessed to have St. Elizabeth Ann Seton as the patroness of our school, a woman who possessed the love, faith, determination and courage to carry out the will of God in building His kingdom.
As we begin the second year in our new Academic and Fine Arts Building, I want to thank all of you who have so generously donated to both the Capital Campaign, Inspiring the Future: Building for Excellence, and the Fund for Seton Catholic. The Fund for Seton Catholic helps to support the best faculty, as well as to make improvements to our existing facility and upgrade our campus technology.
Mark your calendars for the Sentinel Alumni Reunion weekend, October 5-7, 2012. am looking forward to welcoming many of you, our alumni, back on campus. You will find the details for this great alumni weekend in this edition of The Sentinel Shield. I send a special thank you to those Seton alumni who continue to give back with their time, treasure and talent. Your love and support truly enrich our school!
If you find yourself on campus, stop by and let us know what you have been up to all summer. We would love to give you a tour of the new Academic and Fine Arts Building as well as share the future building plans for the Seton Catholic campus with you.
Blessings to you and your family!
Welcome to the 2012-2013 Seton Catholic school year. Only yesterday, my wife and I were proudly watching our son walk across the stage as a member of the Seton Catholic Preparatory Class of 2012. That truly was a joyous moment for our entire family.
On October 29th we will be blessed to have Immaculee Ilibagiza, a Rwandan genocide survivor, speak to our students and our community. Immaculee’s story, Left to Tell, which our students read this summer, is a story of determination, faith, hope and forgiveness.
As I begin my fourth year of service on the Seton Advisory Board, and second term as President, I have to say that serving on the Board is something I truly enjoy. The Advisory Board serves as the parent community’s representative and works with the administration to make Seton Catholic the best school it can be. I look forward to the challenge of new opportunities. This year, the Board’s focus will be on identifying what makes Seton Catholic the special place that it is, and how we can build upon those strengths to make it even better. To that end, we’ll be spearheading community service projects and working to promote our Catholic identity. Along the way, we’ll be inviting and encouraging others to participate in events and activities to enhance Seton Catholic’s vibrant and active community.
It dramatically illustrates the charism of determination which is our focus charism this year. I urge you to read the book and to attend Immaculee’s presentation. It will be inspirational and one of the highlights of the year, and I am very much looking forward to it. I would like to thank all of you who work so hard and are so determined to make Seton Catholic an outstanding school and such a special place. We all find our niche here, and it is through our combined efforts that we have grown and prospered. I look forward to serving Seton Catholic this year and if you have suggestions, questions or would like to share your talents, please let me know.
Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted ordained Dan Vanyo into the priesthood June 2 at Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral. Seton Catholic Preparatory High School is proud to announce that Fr. Vanyo will serve as our Chaplain this year in addition to serving at his parish, Queen of Peace, in Mesa. He joins 254 diocesan and religious priests who serve the Phoenix Diocese by offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, conferring the sacraments and overseeing aspects of parish and campus life. Father Vanyo states, “I am excited to be chaplain at Seton Catholic Prep and look forward to helping the students, teachers, and parents become closer to Christ and His Church.”
Here’s the riddle… you see it every day… you’ve used it before… it’s everywhere you go… and it keeps on giving… what is it?
It’s “scrip,” the proven method of generating charitable rebates through common purchases from your favorite stores, restaurants and service providers. With scrip, you’ll have significant opportunities to provide much-needed funding relief to Seton Catholic Prep.
The reasons that parents and students choose to make Seton Catholic Prep a part of their lives are as diverse as the individuals who make up our community. A family tradition of Catholic education, rigorous academics, an opportunity to learn in a school where knowledge and expression of the Catholic faith is encouraged and celebrated in a smaller, more nurturing environment are just a few of those reasons. For some, there is no question that a Catholic school environment is the right choice; for others, it is a matter of weighing all of the options before making the decision.
Seton parents, past and present, have expressed that they are happy and proud that the lessons they are trying to teach at home are being reinforced at school, that their children are making wise decisions regarding friends, dating, alcohol, and dedication to school work. Parents see that their children are encouraged to treat others with respect and that they exhibit the courage to do the “right thing”.
Our school’s mission statement is to “provide a college preparatory curriculum within a Catholic faith community focusing on academic excellence, leadership and loving service to others”. At the heart of that mission statement is the focus on service and leadership. The charisms of our school’s namesake, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, serve as constant reminders and are considered when planning many school and classroom activities for students and faculty alike, providing a central focus for all we do. So what is a charism? The word “charism” is of Greek origin and means “free gift”. The Modern Catholic Encyclopedia further defines charism as “Paul’s term for graces of the Spirit given for building up
Love, Courage, Faith and Determination were the four characteristics that St. Elizabeth Ann Seton exemplified during a lifetime...
the body of Christ.” At Seton Catholic Prep, focusing on these charisms is a way to increase our Catholic identity and enhance the faith filled family atmosphere that is a major hallmark of our school. Focusing on the charisms, however, and defining the charisms of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in particular, is a relatively new development in Seton’s history.
Several years ago in theology classrooms on the Seton Catholic campus, discussions took place amongst all of our students. These discussions centered on the events of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s life, how she dealt with those events, and what she accomplished in the face of obstacles that would have left most of us hopelessly discouraged. During these discussions, four words often reoccurred—love, courage, faith and determination. These words would become what the students deemed to be the charisms of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton felt great love, particularly for babies and children, and this love brought her to devote her life in service to them. She displayed great courage when faced with the dismay of family and friends who tried to dissuade her upon learning of her growing belief in,
and eventual profession of, the Catholic faith. From an early age, she had a devout devotion to God which continued to grow throughout her lifetime. It was this faith that sustained her in times of deep sorrow at the loss of her beloved husband and others whom she held dear, as well as during the many other struggles in her life. Last is determination. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton displayed extraordinary determination in accomplishing her goals in the face of many obstacles, not the least of which were her eventual poverty, the negativity of the times toward her Catholic faith, and in the face of what she could accomplish given the accepted role of women during the late 1700’s and early 1800’s in the United States.
Love, courage, faith and determination were the four characteristics that St. Elizabeth Ann Seton exemplified during a lifetime in which she established the first American religious community, the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, in 1809, and the first parochial school in the United States in 1810. These accomplishments, and the way in which she lived her life in service to God and others, were what led Pope Paul VI to declare on September 14, 1975 that, “Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton is a saint!” making her the first American to be canonized.
It is these charisms of love, courage, faith and determination that are emphasized and encouraged in our students and faculty, both inside and outside of the classroom, providing a focus that the faculty and administration can continually return to when ministering to students. Every year, a different charism is focused upon so that when a student graduates after four years, they will have been exposed to each of the charisms and been given the opportunity to reflect upon how they can incorporate them into their own lives while being encouraged to put them into practice through service and leadership. This year’s charism is determination.
The high school years can be exciting and full of possibility, but they can also bring moments of difficulty requiring determination on the part of the student. Today’s teens are under extraordinary pressures to excel in the classroom, to be highly involved in extracurricular activities and to be “well rounded” so that they can get into that perfect college or be awarded scholarships. At the same time, the teen years are a natural time for students to question what they’ve never questioned, to learn where they fit in, what they believe in, what they want to “do with their life”. Incorporating the charisms into retreats, required reading selections and classroom discussions, for example, is beneficial when the noise of the world threatens our sense of peace and purpose. An awareness of the charisms creates fertile
ground for thoughts, words and actions that develop strong, compassionate individuals with a desire to serve others and who possess a capacity for leadership. The charisms offer a place to return to, a compass of sorts, that can provide a center of clarity.
Service and leadership are closely entwined. Performing service for another person is, in a sense, an act of leadership. By giving of yourself in service to others,
Leadership and service stem from reaching out to the community, truly experiencing what joys and hardships exist in the world right outside the walls of our own homes
you are demonstrating leadership of character. Our students serve their parish and greater communities in many ways. They volunteer at Paz de Cristo Food Bank, Andre House, St. Vincent de Paul, and Ronald McDonald House. Our students serve as camp counselors, volunteer in
Boy and Girl Scout troops, in their parish Religious Education programs and as foster children mentors.
Here on campus, our students serve as Mass ministers and Kairos leaders. They serve in Student Council, in our Ambassadors Club or in one of the many other clubs available on campus. Our students serve as leaders on our athletic teams and as peer tutors whether through our formal National Honor Society program or by helping a struggling classmate backstage during a break in play practice.
Seton students have also been observed demonstrating other, some might say less noteworthy, acts of service and leadership by helping an opponent get up from a fall during an athletic competition, helping a fellow student pick up their books when they’ve fallen, or providing a listening ear to a friend’s problem. Some of these acts might be considered small, but no act of service to another human being is small to the person who is receiving the act of kindness.
What our students learn from service is incredible. Service taught one student that, “Leaders not only guide, but listen to those around them”. Students learn that there are people in the world who simply do not have the creature comforts they themselves enjoy. Students develop an enhanced empathy for others and experience feelings of helplessness when they can’t give an individual what they need. Service also brings the discovery that serving brings them joy and that they have the capacity to be, and the responsibility to be, a voice and a helping hand to those who are struggling. And it doesn’t stop after graduation.
Our alumni continue to serve on their college campuses, in their communities, and beyond our country’s borders. Some continue to offer that ever necessary service directly to individuals in need of assistance, and some go on to work for greater change in our society and our government. One of our alumni stated that, “leadership and service stem from reaching out to the community, truly experiencing what joys and hardships exist in the world right outside the walls of our own homes” while another stated that, “systemic change is hard, difficult, and requires compromises and baby-steps (as well as set-backs)”.
Elizabeth Ann Bailey did not set out to achieve all that she did, nor did she probably ever think that she would be named a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. She was a woman born in 1774 into a prominent New York family. She loved dancing and the theatre. She was married at the age of 19 to a man she loved and bore five children. She nursed her husband during the illness that resulted in his death. The students in her first Catholic school were her own three daughters and four other children. Elizabeth Ann Bailey was a woman of great love and faith who acted with great courage and determination to do what was necessary to take care of not only her own family, but others she saw in need. What would our world be like if we all attempted, to the best of our ability, to live our lives with love, courage, faith and determination as St. Elizabeth Ann Seton did?
Summer service trip to New Mexico provides for those in need and assists Missionaries of Charity
In June, Seton students joined more than 70 teens from St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, St. Catherine in Phoenix and St. Germaine in Prescott Valley for their annual mission trip to Gallup, New Mexico.
The group assisted the Missionaries of Charity with laundry, yard work, cleaning the homeless shelter and prepping and serving meals for the poor. The Little Sisters of the Poor run an assisted living home for the elderly poor where students
visited with the residents, put together and performed some musical numbers for them during dinner, had a spa day with some of the female residents, cleaned and repaired curtains, painted, and did yard work.
Gallup Catholic School is celebrating their 100th anniversary this year and the volunteers helped renovate the school for its celebration event. The missionaries pulled weeds, cleaned windows and carpets, stripped and laid tile and re-
painted the parking lots and play areas. Staff members at the school were blessed to have over 1,000 hours of tasks accomplished by the students. Those students who attended the trip were: Jessica Ingstrum ’13, Mariesa Ingstrum ’12, Tori Antram ’13, Bri Antram ’15, Kayla Stevason ’13, Ryan Stenborg ’13, Sarah Serrano ’14, Shannon Leonard ’13, and Clare McCarville ’12.
CHANDLER, Ariz., April 11, 2012—Seton Catholic Preparatory High School today announced that four students from its senior class of 110 students have been selected as 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program (NMSP) finalists. They are:
• Gunnar Gleisner of Chandler: Campus activities include football, track, student council and theater. Gunnar will attend the University of California at San Diego this fall studying chemical engineering.
• Edward Hietter of Gilbert: Campus activities included the golf team. Edward will attend the University of New Mexico and study computer and electrical engineering.
• Brett Reardon of Ahwatukee: Campus activities included the robotics club. He will attend the Barrett Honors College at ASU this fall to pursue a career in mechanical engineering.
• Katie Walters of Queen Creek: Campus activities include the girls’ basketball team. She will be attending the University of Arizona in Tucson and will study political science.
The four Seton graduates are among the highest scoring entrants selected from each state who consistently demonstrate excellent academic performance as well as exceptional PSAT results.
“Having four Merit Finalists in a graduating class of 110 is quite significant,” said David Sorkin, Seton Catholic Prep assistant principal. “These well-rounded high achievers exemplify our mission (academic excellence, leadership and service) and show what’s possible with a Seton education. They are to be commended.”
Capital Campaign gifts and pledges continue to support enhancements of the Academic and Fine Arts Building. In late May, a state-of-the art world language lab was installed. The lab accommodates up to 25 students and is equipped with carrels, each with its own headset and computer monitor. The lab will help develop verbal fluency, as well as written fluency. Our world language program has been expanded to offer Mandarin Chinese as a language option for our students beginning with the 2012-13 school year. Our faculty was treated to new furniture in the faculty conference and work rooms, making their work environment more professional and usable, and sound systems were installed in the Dance, Band and Choir classrooms.
Campus safety has also been improved with the addition of exterior building security cameras and camera monitoring software.
Fund for Seton Catholic
Gifts to the Fund for Seton Catholic last year provided funds to repaint the interior of the gymnasium and supplied permanent power for the press box,
scoreboard and a future concessions building for the stadium. In addition, these funds continue to update technology in each classroom and enhance student academic programs.
Most appreciated are the large fans in the gym, funded by the Sentinel Booster Club. Now our students and coaches can keep cool!
For 58 years, Seton Catholic Prep has been preparing young men and women to be academically prepared for college and to be community leaders who passionately serve others. Opened in August 2011, the school’s Academic and Fine Arts Building is providing Seton students with a competitive edge through innovative programs and new opportunities to learn in an exciting, creative environment.
We invite you to join us in making a difference in the lives of our current students and future Sentinels by reserving a naming opportunity in the new building. Your gift will ensure our educational environment continues to enrich students for many years to come!

It really is very simple. Your annual gifts allow the Seton experience to be possible.
Similarly to many private faith based schools, Seton Catholic Preparatory’s tuition does not fully cover the cost of educating tomorrow’s leaders, today. It is because of your gifts that we are able to fully educate, enhance and nurture the youth that attend Seton Catholic Preparatory. Monetary gifts are necessary to continue and carry out our mission to provide a college preparatory curriculum within a Catholic faith community focusing on academic excellence, leadership and loving service to others. We cannot do it alone and need your continued support to ensure that today’s and tomorrow’s students can experience a full Seton education.
Please consider a gift today of $25, $50, $100 or more. Your gift is a sign of your belief in the Seton legacy. Seton Catholic is a strong community of faith, guided by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s charisms of love, courage, faith and determination. Our legacy of personal and academic excellence has endured and evolved since 1954, and with your financial support, we will continue our long tradition.
Thank you for teaming with Seton Catholic Preparatory High School in its mission to graduate students with Strong Hearts, Strong Minds, and who will be Strong Leaders, ready to meet the future. Thank you for supporting the legacy of excellence that we are proud to be associated with!

Over 1,700 teams from throughout the world entered the 2012 Dell Social Innovation Challenge for student entrepreneurs. Now only five of them – including a group of Arizona State University engineering students – remain for the final round of competition at the University of Texas in Austin.
Team 33 Buckets is comprised of mechanical engineering senior Paul Strong and four biomedical engineering students – team leader and senior Pankti Shah, senior varendra Silva, senior Mark Huerta and junior Connor Wiegand, Seton Class of 2010. They will vie for the championship title and prizes to be awarded at the Dell Challenge finals.
The team was formed through the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program in ASU’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. Team 33 Buckets was one of eight EPICS teams that were among the 200 teams chosen in the spring as Dell Challenge semifinalists.
Team 33 Buckets derives its name from the atomic number of arsenic and the use of buckets in a particular filtration system. Its project is development of a low-cost, efficient and easily maintained filtration system that will remove bacteria and debris – most importantly arsenic –from tainted water wells in Bangladesh, where a quarter of the population is exposed to harmful amounts of arsenic, making it a leading cause of death in the country.
The idea for the project came from Enamul Hoque, a native of Bangladesh who earned a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering from ASU in 1985 and now owns the Hoque & Associates engineering firm in Phoenix.

Seton Catholic Prep hosted the First Annual Golden Sentinels Reunion on April 12th honoring and recognizing those alumni who graduated from Seton 50 years ago or more. Included in this year’s celebration were members of the classes of 1958 (Seton’s first graduating class) through 1962. Guests were treated to a wonderful dinner in their honor and had a great time reminiscing about their years as students at Seton. Some even brought their yearbook and notebooks of memorabilia they’ve kept all this time! The group was welcomed by Seton alumnus and President of the Board of Trustees, Gabe Ortiz ’88 and entertainment was provided by Tim Smith and the Seton student Barbershop Quartet! Honorees were given a special lapel pin indicating their status as a Golden Sentinel along with a personalized certificate honoring their legacy as an alumnus of Seton Catholic Prep. The Golden Sentinels Reunion will be an annual event, each year “inducting” into the group the newest 50 year class. In 2013, we will be pleased to welcome members of the Class of 1963 in addition to all those from previous years.
Send it in! Be sure to include your class year along with your accomplishment, accolade or other significant news item.

Do you know someone in senior management of a company that pays Arizona Corporate income taxes?
These companies can re-direct 100% of their taxes to support scholarships for Seton Catholic Preparatory students. We have a unique situation in Arizona that could be a tremendous opportunity and blessing for the students of Seton Catholic Preparatory High School. These funds would provide scholarships to low-income students and other students that otherwise could not enter our school. When we can give corporate tax credit scholarships to these students, it frees up more scholarship opportunities for even more students.
Insurance Companies also…
Most insurance companies doing business in Arizona pay a tax that equals 1.9% of all premiums they collect here. Corporations have been re-directing their taxes to schools and now insurance companies can re-direct their premium tax. Ask your insurance company about your premiums.
By one of these companies giving to Seton Catholic Preparatory, they will actually see their tax dollars at work. Insurance companies and corporations will be a great way for us to bring new funding to our schools at no cost to them. If you know someone in a senior position with a corporation or an insurance company, we sure would like to talk with them. Please contact Bob Esposito at Seton Catholic Prep…one simple phone call at 480.9631900 could make a big difference for these students of Seton Catholic Preparatory High School.

Keni Thomas
September 17, 2012
YOu’RE INVITED TO OuR
Keni Thomas is an engaging speaker whose story captivates audiences from beginning to end. The highly successful movie “Blackhawk Down” is based on his Army Company’s mission in Mogadishu, Somalia. Keni captivates audiences as he tells the incredible story of extraordinary individuals and how they fought to bring each other home. Drawing from his experiences on the battlefield, Keni inspires people to achieve greatness by stressing the importance of outstanding leadership at every level, even if the only person you are leading is yourself. Keni sums it up like this, “Leadership has never been about the rank or the position you hold. It’s about the example you set. There are people to your left and to your right who are counting on you and it’s up to you to deliver. But you will only be as good as you prepared yourself to be.” He is the recipient of the bronze star for valor and a graduate of the University of Florida.

The Journey of Immaculée Ilibagiza— A Story of Faith, hope and Forgiveness Making the Right Choice— Think before you Act!
Immaculée is a living example of faith put into action. Her life was transformed dramatically during the 1994 Rwandan genocide where she and seven other women spent 91 days huddled silently together in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor’s house. Immaculée credits her salvage mostly to prayer and to a set of rosary beads given to her by her devout Catholic father. Today Immaculée is regarded as one of the world’s leading speakers on peace, faith, and forgiveness. She has shared her universal message with world dignitaries, school children, multinational corporations, churches, and at many conferences.

Program
Action, reaction, it’s not just a law you learned about in physics. Our lives are defined by actions and subsequent reactions. Young people often fail to see the potential ramifications of decisions they make in their young adult lives. Understanding how information can affect your future and those around you is more important than ever. The presentation will address social networking trends of young adults and the unintended consequences of seemingly innocent decisions that can affect future success academically, professionally and socially in this ever more interconnected world.
William Bessette is a 2002 Seton Alumnus and is the Community Outreach and Education Division Team Leader for the Office of the Arizona Attorney General. William has been with the office since 2006 and has spent his time at the office examining the issue of social networking behavior of adolescents and educating them about how their behavior can affect their future plans.
Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Meg Mahoney has presided for the past 10 years over family, criminal and juvenile cases. She is a 1988 graduate cum laude of Boston College Law School. Following law school, she practiced civil litigation at Bryan Cave LLP. She has spoken frequently about the judicial branch, teen substance abuse and the legal profession at St. Theresa Catholic School, Brophy College Prep and Xavier College Prep.
