The Sentinel Shield is published bi-annually by the Seton Catholic Preparatory High School Advancement Office SetonAlumni@SetonCHS.org
The Mission of Seton Catholic Preparatory High School is to provide a college preparatory curriculum within a Catholic faith community focusing on academic excellence, leadership and loving service to others.
Are you receiving multiple copies of The Sentinel Shield? If so, please contact Karen Lockhart in the Advancement Office at (480) 963-1900, Ext 2031 or KLockhart@ SetonCHS.org. Parents, we appreciate receiving updated addresses so we may mail our alumni a copy of The Sentinel Shield to their own address.
As summer draws to an end, I eagerly await the coming school year. It will be a joy to welcome our new freshman students and to watch them grow and develop over the next four years. Reconnecting with our returning students brings interesting stories about experiences learned over the summer through part-time jobs, travels, family reunions and meeting new friends.
If you’ve visited our campus lately, you can see that Seton Catholic Preparatory is changing too. The first classroom building of our new campus is well underway. The building is scheduled to be completed by fall 2011. As fundraising efforts continue, I want to thank our many benefactors and volunteers who continue to invest and support our efforts. Together we will continue to build for the future.
I am happy to report, as a result of receiving a challenge grant from one of our generous donors, the annual Fund for Seton Catholic went over goal, raising $120,754 for student programs! Your gifts to the annual campaign help to support teacher salaries, technology upgrades in our classrooms and improvements to our facilities. Thanks to all who participated in this worthwhile endeavor!
I am also looking forward to welcoming many of our alumni when they gather for Sentinel Alumni Reunion Weekend, Oct. 1-3, 2010. We will cheer for our varsity football team at the Friday night home game, recognize esteemed alumni at the Hall of Fame Mass and Awards Ceremony on Saturday afternoon and join our Sentinel Booster Club for some fun at the annual golf tournament on Sunday morning. Being part of the Seton community instills the desire to serve. To this end, several of our alumni now give back to Seton in a variety of ways, such as sharing their time as volunteer
Patricia Collinsleaders on our Board of Trustees, Hall of Fame Committee and Finance Committee. We now have six alumni faculty/staff members and a number of alumni are now current parents of the school. The love and support from Seton Alumni truly enrich our school!
Under the leadership of Director of Admission, Mr. Chris Moore, we have been blessed with a stable enrollment, in spite of these tough economic times. Mr. Moore joined Seton last December and has done an exceptional job in helping students and families make Seton their first choice.
A new administrative change this year is the addition of an “Academic Liaison” within the counseling department. Mrs. Pam Hollerbach will be responsible for responding to academic issues for both parents and students. Parents and students will receive more information regarding this liaison position at their respective orientation sessions in early August.
As I reflect on my role as your principal, I am privileged to have another opportunity to lead an exceptional faculty and staff in shaping the lives of our young people. The Class of 2010 is a testament to our mission, with 129 graduates earning over $3.2 million in academic and athletic scholarships. Furthermore, 100% of the class has gone on to college!
As we begin this exciting new school year, let us join in a prayer of thanksgiving for all of the blessings God has bestowed on our community and ask for His guidance in the days ahead.
Once a Sentinel, Always a Sentinel! St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Pray for us! From the Principal’s
Seton Catholic Preparatory is on the cusp of a new era and rapidly becoming the right choice for a growing number of families all over the East Valley. The administration and faculty of Seton Catholic Prep will continue our efforts to develop young people in their faith while promoting morals and values that develop responsible citizens who are leaders in their community.
Many years ago, those before us worked to build the campus we currently enjoy. I invite you to reminisce below on some of the stories shared in our annual yearbooks from 1958 through 2010. We ask for your continued support of Seton Catholic Preparatory in the years to come.
Seton Catholic High School was founded in 1954 as a parish school by Fr. Joseph N. Patterson. The school served the youth from St. Mary’s Church in Chandler, many from migrant and farming families. The school was staffed by the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill. Father Patterson’s sixteen-year dream of opening a Catholic
are currently studying at Notre Dame University and Gonzaga University.
The first principal of Seton Catholic High School was Sister Mary Ronald Madden, S.C. who is also the blood sister of our beloved Sister Joan Marie Madden, S.C. who gave 40 plus years of her professional life to Seton Catholic High School.
The first graduating class of Seton High School (the addition of “Catholic” came later) was 22 strong with the President of the Class being William Henry. Twin brothers Ronald and Donald Felix were members of this class and today still support Seton Catholic with time, treasure and talent. Sweethearts of this class, Mark Stoll and Sylvia Valdez, have been married over 50 years and now have grandchildren that are students at Seton Catholic Preparatory!
high school in the East Valley became a reality largely due to his work and with the assistance of Mr. Joe Martinez, a St. Mary’s Parish maintenance man, whose 14 children eventually graduated from Seton Catholic High School. The school began on a five acre plot just east of the railroad tracks on Chandler Boulevard (now The Boys and Girls Club) and remained there until 1983.
Seton Catholic became a diocesan school in 1973 and now serves a diverse student body of 550 young men and women from 28 parishes primarily in the East Valley, including St. Peter’s on the Gila Indian Reservation and St. Anthony’s in Casa Grande, AZ. Seton is the only Catholic high school serving this area and 30% of the student body is minority. Today, Gila River Community resident, Raeging Storm Miles, is a standout student at Seton Catholic while Thomas White, ’59 was the first Native American Pima Indian Councilman and Governor of the Gila River Community. Two previous Seton Catholic graduates from the Gila River Community
into the Seton Catholic Alumni Hall of Fame. The motto of The Class of 1965 was “We’re Sentinels born, we’re Sentinels bred…..”
The Class of l970 saw the “Senior Lounge” come to life where television was available during break periods. Seniors also shared their smoking privileges with the juniors just beyond the patio wall (with parent’s permission of course!). Seniors Joe Mendoza and Connie O’Neal were crowned Homecoming King and Queen. Senior Tom Camptell, football team quarterback led the team to a Homecoming win over Maricopa. Tom was also the first Seton athlete to receive a full athletic scholarship to a Division I University. Tom played football for the University of Arizona for four years.
The Seton Class of 1959 was composed of only 8 male graduates. The only singlegender graduating class ever! One of those graduates, Ed Delci, was selected the First MVP for the Seton 1958 Football Team having a record of 10-1-1. Ed was also the first AZ Chicano Peace Corps Volunteer to serve in the Program in Ecuador, South America (1963-66); and later returned to become the first Seton graduate to be named Peace Corps Regional Director serving in Cuzco, Peru South America (1969-71).
James Stephens, ‘59 served 25+ years in the US Navy (retired) and currently resides in the state of Virginia where he continues to volunteer in various veterans’ organizations.
The Class of 1965 dedicated their yearbook to their mentor Father John Fahey. Father John currently lives in Tucson, Arizona and in 2009 was inducted
Seton Catholic History teacher Dennis Clinch was a graduate in the Class of 1977 and current principal Mrs. Patricia Collins, taught English during this time. The class remembers the Cheese Drive, the Chocolate Drive and Senior Slave Day! Other Seton faculty/staff members who graduated from Seton Catholic Prep include Matt Kochis, ’97; Beth Mitchell, ’98; Jennifer (Pitts) Kohl, ’98; Bryan Olivieri, ’01; and, Steve Hart, ’01.
A campus fire broke out in the early morning hours of September 12, 1980. Al Mendoza, one of seven siblings to graduate from Seton, reported the fire. After three years in temporary buildings on that same site, Seton moved to the current location on Dobson Road. An un-touched crucifix recovered in the campus ashes hangs in the Administration building today.
The new “Seton Catholic Tri-City High School” campus was dedicated on October 9, 1983 with the Most Reverend Bishop Thomas J. O’Brien presiding. The play “Christmas in the Village Square” was performed that year under the directorship of Mrs. Elizabeth Mariner. The student council of this year, led by Brother Dan Casey included Gino Gutierrez, Chris Gummel, Ernie Friend, Debbie Eubanks, Nick Arnone, and Ampy Lee.
In 1987 Mr. Jerry Mullin, current Director of Counseling and Varsity Softball Coach, was quoted as saying “Each teacher hopes not only to impart knowledge to the student but a set of values and ideals
were implemented. The athletic fields were relocated and upgraded and the library was rearranged and became computerized!
Homecoming Queen and King for the Class of 2000 were Heather Gaiser and Trevor De Benedetto. Senior Heather Heying was quoted as saying the cheesiest pick up line is “Is your dad a terrorist, because you are the bomb!” Seton sweethearts this year included Dan Koestner and Kelly Rush, Greg Koestner and Ashley Schmitt, Mike Fritzgerald and Colleen Hill, Liz Sills and Ben Thompson, and Greg Esposito and Kim Covert!
that the student can live by and shine for.” And junior class member Nicole Harrison was quoted saying “This year has been full of many surprises and changes and I’ll be even more surprised when our gym’s done!”
Nicole Harrison, ‘88 is currently a Firefighter/Paramedic with the Phoenix Fire Department and serves as the Seton Alumni Hall of Fame Committee Chairman! 1988 brought Mrs. Louann Walther from Dallas, Texas to become the school secretary and she still serves that position today! Mrs. Mary Beth Mueller was our assistant principal and the yearbook noted her least favorite subject in school was English!
The Class of 1994’s motto was “Breaking Out” as this was the year student enrollment and staff size reached new highs. New uniform and gum rules
and Sam Morris, Maria and Andrea Doris, Josh and Aaron Lester, and Katie and Angelina Baglini! The football field was relocated and construction began on the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Chapel.
Construction began on the second building for the campus expansion with the ground breaking and blessing being held on February 26 and presided over by The Most Reverend Bishop Olmstead. This new classroom building will house 16 new classrooms as well as a much needed fine arts level. When completed, enrollment at Seton Catholic will increase to 700 students.
The Class of 2010 brought 100% of the graduating seniors off to higher education; three national merit finalists and $3.2
The Class of 2002 was known for “coloring outside the lines” and that they did! The Seton Cheer Squad attended the UCLA cheer camp which also included a day at Disneyland. The Seton Boy’s Basketball team took their annual summer trip to San Diego. The students also brought new colors to show their Lord as Jake Hyde wowed the congregation at daily Mass and the Mass sound crew was led by Eric Eklund! In the Class of 2002 Christine Slomski and Aaron Farabaugh were voted to have the Most School Spirit and Erika Bush and Sean McCarthy were voted Future Politicians! The journalism students producing the student newspaper “The Sentinel” were heard to proclaim: “He who controls the news, controls the world!”
2006 brought the year of the “Van” shoes, hair straightening and campus expansion! The Swim Team was overloaded with siblings: Brian and Patricia Espiritu, Kyle
million dollars in college scholarships. The Valedictorian of the Class of 2010 was Mr. Kyle Eddy and the Salutatorian was Mr. Connor Wiegand.
Seton Catholic Preparatory welcomes 156 new freshmen in as the Class of 2014. Many who have gone before have built this campus both spiritually and physically. In honor of these living and deceased bricks of the school and in honor of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, we will continue to grow our campus and build strong young men and women within a Catholic faith community who are focused on academic excellence, leadership and loving service to others.

Construction is well underway on our new classroom building! The goal is to occupy the building for the 2011-2012 schoolyear. Our Capital Campaign Steering Committee is working to secure $2M in cash by June 30, 2011. These funds will be used to purchase furnishings and equipment and to pay for the cost of construction and bond obligations.
Please consider making the dream of our new classroom building a reality in the following ways:
• Cash, Including Multi-Year Pledges
• Bequest Through an Estate Plan or Will
• Life Insurance and Securities
• Corporate Matching
• In-Kind Construction, Supplies and Services
• Charitable Trusts
For more information, please call Paula Osterday, Director of Advancement at Seton Catholic Preparatory High School (480) 963-1900 , Ext. 2011. All gifts are tax deductible in accordance with federal and Arizona state laws.
allows Seton Catholic Preparatory to construct new buildings and facilities in phases, so that the school is operational during the entire construction period. Seton Catholic has already raised over $7 million to fund Phase One of the campus expansion:
• The school purchased an additional 12.3 acres of land adjacent to the current campus for its expansion.
• The football field and stadium were moved.
• The new 5,900 sq. ft. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Chapel was completed and dedicated in March 2008.
It really is very simple. Your annual gifts allow the Seton experience to be possible.
Similarly to many private faith based schools, Seton Catholic Preparatory’s tuition does not fully cover the cost of educating tomorrow’s leaders, today. It is because of your gifts that we are able to fully educate, enhance and nurture the youth that attend Seton Catholic Preparatory. Monetary gifts are necessary to continue and carry out our mission to provide a college preparatory curriculum within a Catholic faith community focusing on academic excellence, leadership and loving service to others. We cannot do it alone and need your continued support to ensure that today’s and tomorrow’s students can experience a full Seton education.
Your gift will help determine the growth and development of every student at Seton Catholic. The programs supported by your gifts directly impact the students, their programs, and their facilities through technology updates, facility upgrades, recruitment and retention of superior faculty; and ensuring the continuing viability of Seton Catholic Preparatory High School for years to come. We count on your support to help make it happen.
We count on your support.
Please return the enclosed envelope today with your gift to the students of Seton Catholic Preparatory High School.
Please consider a gift of today of $25, $50, $100 or more. Your gift is a sign of your belief in the Seton legacy. Seton Catholic is a strong community of faith, guided by St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s Charisms of love, courage, faith and determination. Our legacy of personal and academic excellence has endured and evolved since 1954, and with your financial support, we will continue our long tradition.
Thank you for teaming with Seton Catholic Preparatory High School in its mission to graduate students with Strong Hearts, Strong Minds, and who will be Strong Leaders, ready to meet the future. Thank you for supporting the legacy of excellence that we are proud to be associated with!

What does it really mean to be a Catholic living in the 21st century? How and where do faith and culture collide and what does it mean to me, personally? This program will offer an intriguing look at what it means to live as a modern Catholic daily and what such a decision means for your future.
PreSenTer: affectionately known as the “Bible Geek®,”
Mark Hart serves as executive Vice President for Life Teen International. A graduate from the University of notre Dame, Mark is a popular speaker, award-winning author and weekly regular on Catholic radio programs.
The greatest designer of all times created you in His unrepeatable image and laid out the blueprint for relationship success. God’s plan for your sexuality will leave you more satisfied than MTV, TV, movies, or any magazine’s plan for your sexuality. This talk will unpack God’s plan to fulfill the deepest desire of your heart to be loved and to love rightly.
PreSenTer: Melanie Pritchard is the executive Director of the Foundation for Life and Love (www.fflal.org). She previously was the education Director for Life ed. Corp., speaking on behalf of Arizona right to Life. She has spoken nationwide to thousands of people at many churches, schools and organizations about modesty, chastity, pro-life issues, and marriage.
A program aimed at inspiring students and their families to realize the meaning and value of their lives.
PreSenTer: Celebrity reporter turned inspirational author, Catholic Sun Columnist and speaker Chris Benguhe taps into his rich tapestry of amazing experiences as a high profile reporter turned author as well as his poignant personal reflections, some funny, some dramatic as he invites youth and adults to realize in an increasingly demanding and confusing world, our problems, imperfections and failures are a chance for us to reach out to others to love and respect, and to be loved and respected in return.

Father Will Schmid, Seton Catholic’s Chaplain, was on the road this summer to South Bend, Indiana where he began working on a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Notre Dame. Before arriving for classes at Notre Dame, he spent a week of vacation in Louisiana. Father attended classes at Notre Dame until the end of July and the Masters program will take him three summers to complete. In August, Father will begin a new parish assignment at St. Theresa Parish in Phoenix, will continue as Chaplain
at Seton Catholic Preparatory and will also be teaching the classes of Vocations and Sacraments at Seton Catholic Preparatory in our Theology Program.
Father Will was a young Lutheran student who attended a Catholic high school and became actively involved in the Life Teen program at St. Theresa Parish. Influenced by his Catholic education and by members of St. Theresa Parish, Father Will was confirmed into the Roman Catholic Church at the 2001 Easter Vigil service at St. Theresa’s. The Holy Spirit then led Fr. Will on an interesting journey: a journey that ultimately brought him to discern a vocation to the priesthood and entry into seminary formation under the sponsorship of the Diocese of Phoenix. Father Will was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Phoenix at Saints Simon and Jude Cathedral on June 6, 2009.
Seton Catholic Preparatory High School is proud to have Father Will as chaplain, faculty member, and mentor to our students!
Last year, the Seton Catholic Development Council, chaired by Seton parent, Margaret Borns, offered current Seton families and staff the opportunity to make memorial gifts to remember their loved ones at the All Soul’s Day Mass, held on Nov. 2, 2009, in the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Chapel. A similar opportunity was presented as part of the annual Mother’s Mass in December 2009. With these programs being so well received, the Development Council will be offering several memorial giving opportunities throughout the coming year. Details will be forthcoming on the Seton website at www. setoncatholic.org. Please consider remembering your loved ones while making a difference in the lives of Seton students!
The Alumni Association of Seton Catholic Preparatory High School is an organization of alumni and friends who collaborate for the purpose of reuniting alumni while sustaining and fostering relationships within the Seton Catholic Community. Through social, charitable, educational, and spiritual activities, the Association strives to instill the Setonian charisms of Courage, Determination, Faith, and Love, thus helping to support the vision and mission of the school.

Greetings to all from the Admission Office. It has been an outstanding year thus far, and will only get better upon the arrival of our freshman class. We are all very excited about the personal quality, diversity and overall academic strength of the class of 2014. They will continue the tradition of laying a very strong foundation for all who follow.
Moving forward, we will continue to upgrade the admission process. In that light, Seton Catholic Prep will now be utilizing a new application for admission that will begin with an online inquiry form. In response to their inquiry, prospective families will receive our new application that will include:
• Family Bio & contact information
• Essays prompts
• Head of School recommendation
• English recommendation
• Math recommendation
• New Science recommendation
• New Teacher of Choice recommendation
Additionally, we are including the application instructions and our 2011-2012 admission timeline so that families remain well informed about the process.
In conjunction with our new application materials, we have decided to take the next technological step and have hired the FACTs management Company to implement their Enrollment Management Program, effectively enabling us to track and guide prospective families from inquiry through registration. This will enable
us to better serve the needs of each family as they advance through the application process.
We will continue to host shadow days for our prospective 9th graders and upper school transfer students, giving them the opportunity to experience Seton Catholic Prep in action. Included will be a campus tour and a chance to sit in on classes, generally experiencing the day in the life of a Seton Catholic Prep student, not to mention the best chocolate chip cookies in the East Valley. Please keep an eye on our web site as we will be posting these dates shortly.
Save the Date for Seton Catholic Prep’s Open House
Our annual open house will take place this year on Saturday, October 16 from 9:00 am to Noon. Plan to join us that day for a campus tour and a meet and greet with our exceptional faculty and staff.
Parents and Prospective Students are Welcome on Campus Anytime
