There Goes the Sun
On August, 21, 2017, a solar eclipse traversed the United States, captivating nearly all of America, including our Seton Community. As the day approached, excitement mounted; lovers of astronomy and casual fans alike prepared to witness the event with special solar glasses or through homemade viewing devices. Mrs. Sanders, who provided solar glasses for the community, verified that the pairs had "the stamp of approval of the International Standards Organization" in order to ensure that they were fully protective. She also provided two solar equipped telescopes, with a smaller one "specifically equipped for viewing the sun," and another with a "very thick filter" that allowed for solar viewing. A lover of astronomy since she was just "a child with a wobbly te lescope," Mrs. Sanders desired to allow as much of the Seton community as possible to witness the event. Along with the complexity of the physics and science involved in predicting such an event, Mrs. Sanders believes that the eclipse is significant because it "reminds us of the enormity of God "

What a Week The
day before Homecoming, a pep rally was held to celebrate the dance and start of the school year Led by new hosts Karen David and Haden Meyers, Sentinels were first treated to complimentary items such as noisemakers, water bottles, and towels by new sponsor Powerade; the school was also presented with a check. Then, Seton's Porn and Spiritline teams performed, displaying their dance and tumbling abilities. After their performance, the captains of each fall sport were called to the front of the audience to compete in an obstacle course, which included throwing footballs at a target and crawling along the floor with toilet plungers. Senior Cross Country Captain Quinn Burdick thought the competition was "A great way to build school spirit," but also stated that he "wanted a rematch." Following this competition was a performance by Seton's Company Dance. Finally, after the annual freshman boy kissing tradition, it was time for Powderpuff football. Five minute halves were held, and the match resulted in senior girl victory. "I'm very proud of our team," stated senior Powderpuff player Bridget Hodges, and "I'm happy that everybody was included, even if they didn't necessarily play." As the festivities winded down, all Sentinels were wished a fun and safe weekend at Homecoming.

Helping Harvey Victims
On August 25, 2017, a devastating hurricane struck the communities of Southeastern Texas. Countless victims of this tragic tropical storm were left homeless and without the supplies they needed. However, Seton Catholic's very own Solidarity Club was quick to organize a foundation focused solely on raising awareness around the afflictions Texas had endured, while simultaneously giving students, teachers, and parents the possibility to donate items to the victims in Texas. The moderator of the club, theology teacher Mrs. Kubasak, organized the donations sent to the Solidarity Club to be delivered to the Catholic Relief Services in Texas. The club's president, Danielle Manella, felt 11 11 to be given the opportunity to help those who genuinely need it- 11

The perseverance of the girls' golf team is unimaginable Competing on a beautiful course in Tucson the girls felt like all of their hard work had paid off This year many new players had joined , and they had to deal with crazy practice schedules due to the normal practice course being under construction Their coach, Mr. Anthony, said "The positivity and team spirit over the entire year was the highlight and just beautiful to see." Throughout the year the girls remained positive and kept pushing towards their goal of qualifying for state even in the 1 10 degree weather.
"I was a newbie to the golf scene, and all the iris were incredibly helpful, kind, and talented. I started off either missing the ball completely or hitting it right into the water. With all of the girls help I was able to actually learn the sport and enjoy it."

From the 5th to the 8th of October, the Seton Drama Club performed "Barbecuing Hamlet." The comedy featured a community theatre company conducting rehearsals at their headquarters in a former funeral home Upon the arrival of a new director, the group is tossed into turmoil as they try to perform Shakespeare's Hamlet with only ten actors.
Student director, Paula Aguilar, described the play as "dramatic, funny, and unique " The comedy of a play within a play included "witty and passive-aggressive humor " that gave it "the 'drama ' every single play needs ." As for the senior herself, she has been director since 2015, her sophomore year. She described her reaction to the thought of directing her last fall play at Seton as "bitte rsweet " Aguilar expressed her love for "Theater and its ability to convey a wide variety of emotions and themes. "
Lastly, she left the following message for her peers and mentors: "I would like to give thanks to every single actor/actress, backstage member, makeup artist, and light and sound member that has and will participate in the Seton Drama Club for all of their hard work and dedication. Last, but not least, I give my sincerest gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. O'Neill for putting their trust in me and for their commitment to making the Seton Drama Club as amazing as it can be."

Towards the Uo Id
For the first time in Seton swim history, the boys team brought home the 1st place State Championship trophy. The boys had been runners-up last year and were determined to bring down their rival, Phoenix Country Day School. The night of finals began with the boys placing 2nd in the 200 Medley Relay, with senior Archie Spindler, senior Vincent Hemingway, senior Gabe Rangel, and sophomore James Karam. Archie Spindler lit it up at the meet, collecting two gold medals, two All-American Times; in addition, he broke two state records in the 200 and 500 free. Regarding his All-American swim, Spindler stated, "I was in disbelief as I looked up at the board I heard m\,j parents screaming across the pool and saw Vincent and Mar\,j Rose \,jelling behind the timers and it sunk in: I had just swum the best race of m\,j life." The night finished up with the 400 Free Relay. Again, Gabe Rangel, Vincent Hemingway, James Karam, and Archie Spindler gave it their all, blasting all of their competitors out of the water by winning the gold. The girls' team also performed well, finishing 7th. Freshman Ruthie Lucht placed 4th in her 200 Free and 3rd in her 500 Free, demolishing both school records by a landslide. The girls' 400 Free Relay, with Elise Jones, Miranda Pieper, Emma Luken, and Ruthie Lucht, finished 4th in a nerveracking finish. Regarding the state meet, freshman Ruthie Lucht said the best part of the meet was the team "coming together and supporting ever\,jone in their events." As the competition finished, all of the swimmers gathered around each other waiting to hear the news that they had won State. Archie Spindler described this moment as "amazing. The entire season we knew it would be a tough fight; when the announcer said we won, all the neNes disappeared and we ran around cheering. It was incredible to feel ever\,lthing pa\J off and be able to prove ourselves as a team." The team celebrated at the end of the meet holding their trophy high in the air with pride.

Rise Up
Our varsity girls basketball team has focused on the motto, "Rise Up." This motto means a lot to the team, "Going into this year we lost a lot of talent and for us that meant we had to rise up to the challenges we faced," said senior captain Sarah Barcello. On Friday, January 19th, they took the opportunity to rise up and win their game against Cactus Shadows, the same team they faced the past two years at the State Championship Finals. Beating them back-tobock at State, they were able to capture yet another win against Cactus Shadows on Friday with a score of 63-25. Between the Barcello Sisters court domination, newcomer Sara Pfeiffer's three pointers, McKenna Klecker's defense on the post and Kendall Krick's speed, the Falcons never stood a chance.

From February 1Oth- 17th, Seton thespians performed a musical titled "Kiss Me Kate. " In order to make the musical the best it could be , students worked day and night to perfect their scenes. Performers had only sixteen days of rehearsal due to holiday breaks, so time was of the essence . Half of the play was Shakespeare, so performers also had to interpret and memorize their lines in Old English. One star of the show, Ericca Gass, said, "'Kiss me Kate' is close to a 3 hour long show and we have to memorize lines and lyrics that are quite difficult to get down." The rewards were worth it. When asked to name his favorite part of being in the play, lead Roman DeCaro said, "My favorite part of the play is becomi g a family with the cast."

On Tuesday, February 27th , the annual language fair took place at ASU Both the French and Spanish classes attended the event The Spanish classes performed impromptu speeches and did very well. The French Ill class had been practicing their plays for many weeks . Their hard work payed off, and they won first and second place out of five schools . Madame Noudali said that it was a "worthwhile event that represented a culmination of a lot of hard work." Magnifique!

The College Chemistry class is constantly learning new advanced chemistry concepts and applying them through labs The students dedicated an entire block period to experiments The students performed five different labs that day, including the elephant toothpaste lab and magnesium strip lab They made elephant toothpaste with yeast, water, dish soap , and food coloring , watching it pour out of the water bottle in a soft, foamy texture in the color of their choice . The strip lab shows the effects of a flame on magnesium, making it too bright to look at with the naked eye These labs test the students' knowledge and prepare them for any college labwork.

Another One Our varsity girls basketball team won their third State Championship in a row on Saturday, February 24th at the Grand Canyon University Arena. Their 55-42 win over the Pueblo Warriors makes it the seventh state title in the past nine years for Coach Karen Self. Sarah Barcello had the game high with 1 8 points, but what really helped the girls was making 20 out of 27 free throws as a team to rise up and win yet another state title.

Carine Sylvie Bou-Ghazale
Dear Carine,
Ever since you were a little girl, you knew what you wanted. At age 3, you insisted on shopping for your own clothes By age 13, you had many achievements on your own, and the biggest of them came to you as an opportunity when you registered at the "very last moment." You went on to win 1st place in the speech tournament: a prize your school had never won in the previous 45 years of participation.
God gives us talents and it is our duty to nurture them. It is the everyday joyful preparation and nurturing of God's gifts that gives us skills. Opportunities are plentiful and they come and go, but talent and skill are the foundation that help you seize many of them when they come. Keep strengthening your faith, talents, and skills. The world of tomorrow, along with its plentiful opportunities, awaits your brilliant mind.
Love, Mom, Dad, Celine, and Claire

Food for thought..."it" always happens for a reason ; reflect on the lesson learned? Don't be afraid to smell the roses ; rushing you will miss the simple pleasures If you can say/do something nice for someone , DO IT! Smile and laugh a lot! Don't be afraid to love with all your heart Loving someone is an amazing gift to share . Remember your "deal breakers"! Money is important , but it is not the end all. Whatever career you choose , make sure you're passionate about it. It is true , you'll never work a day in your life And lastly , FAITH! pray on everything and live life by God's greatest two commandments (Matthew 22 : 37-40)

The years have flown in a blink of an eye from the joy we felt the moment we first held you. The pride we feel as you accomplish this milestone but more importantly is the unexplainable joy as we realize that you are truly ready to soar. We know without a doubt that this new chapter in college was written especially for you since you have always had kindness and insight beyond your years but more importantly is how you have always stayed true to your beliefs. It is that quiet, yet hardworking, smart and faithful spirit within you that will guide you to your purpose in life. Dream big, work hard but most of all always walk with God at your side.

The Night of Prom typically starts one of two ways Attendees either spend several hours beforehand with their friends making sure their hair and makeup are perfect, or they spend about fifteen minutes putting on their tuxedo and putting some gel in their hair Either way, everyone who went to Prom this year ended up at Oakwood Country Club ready to dance (or gamble) the night away.
Upon attendance, Seton students were welcomed by a line of teachers and staff while walking through the Country Club doors. Students then found their way to their assigned table and began mingling with their fellow classmates. Next, students were served salad and their choice of chicken alfredo or Pasta primavera. After dinner, students could go to the "game room" and play an assortment of casino games , like blackjack or poker, or go to the dance floor adorned by an "enchanting" light fixture
At the end of the night, Mrs Pattock announced Prom King and Queen. Before this, Mrs Pattock announced Connor Ellis and Sophia Tomlinson as Prince and Princess For Prom King and Queen, the competition was tight, but Roman DeCaro and Halle Lecker pulled away with the win.

Coach Stephenson reminisces over one of Seton's big games , "Padres was a big game. for us the.y are. our rivals. I was proud of our kids' effort. They played with extreme. confidence. ... that is what you're. supposed to do."

Senior Betrea,t
By Sydeny Maggio
Taken back in time, seniors reminisce on the past four years spent at Seton The senior retreat brings together all the seniors for the last time before they head into graduation . At the retreat , seniors are offered various activities that give
them time to reflect on the past four years and their impending future, whether it be through prayer, art, movement, or journaling . As Paige VanConant said, the retreat was " a fun and relaxing way to give thought to the past four years of our lives." Students also heard various alumni of Seton , who gave advice on how to keep your faith alive in college Following the conclusion of the last retreat as a Sentinel , seniors take another step closer to finishing their time at Seton and are reminded the maxim "once a Sentinel always a Sentinel " is true
Go In Pea,ce
By Cassie Stoll
Fr Chris Axline left Seton Catholic Preparatory to become St Mary Magdalene's parochial administrator; in his place, Reverend Timothy Seavey takes his place as Seton Catholic's part-time chaplain and theology teacher This sudden departure of Seton's priest has left many students and faculty shocked and saddened, but in an interview with Fr Chris, he is adamant that people know a certain part of his legacy : "I pray and I want my legacy to be that I've shown people the Lord loves them, He is with them at all times. If I do that, and that one thing only, and for only one person, that is good enough for me "
All over campus, Fr . Chris Axline was known best for his nickname, 'Fraxline'. His casual demeanor and passionate beliefs contributed to the fondness every member of Seton had for him . Many people have fun - even hilariousmemories of him Mrs Khol recounts one memory in particular, after asked in an interview what the funniest moment with Fr. Chris was: "When the phone went off during confessions over the loudspeaker and the theme song to 'Robin Hood' came on - you know the whistling one."
One of Fr. Chris's former students, Gabrielle Mittun, recalls another of her favorite memories: "I always loved meme Tuesdays ... or maybe it was meme Wednesdays. They were always my favorite because Fr. Chris always knows how to relate to his students." Fr. Chris himself has stated that the part he most enjoyed of his whole Seton Catholic experience was being with his students, and walking with them through each journey Shock spread throughout the students most notably, perhaps because it was students who connected with Fr. Chris the most. Through thick and through thin, it is obvious that Fr Chris of Seton Catholic Preparatory impacted each individual's life in some way, maybe some more than others . He led people towards God, helping them grow deeper in their faith and
in their character. " One of the things I will also miss about him is that he knows my life. He knows my kids ' lives , and he supports me in my life You don ' t always get that with a priest," says Mrs. Kohl, an aid in the ministry department. Fr. Chris has undoubtedly made his mark at Seton Catholic Preparatory His legacy will never be left as a mere memory, but an everlasting symbol of everything this high school stands for : dedication, passion, faith, and hard-work
San Francisco
Members of Seton Catholic ' s publications class and club made a trip to the National Journalism Conference (NSPA/JEA for short) which was hosted in San Francisco , California. They departed from Phoenix SkyHarbor airport at 8 :30 p m on Wednesday night, and after arriving at the San Francisco International Airport at around 10 :30 p .m., it was a whirlwind of activity Thursday, the students all split up into groups to attend sessions that would be specifically beneficial based on their contributions to the Publications class . After a long day, they had dinner and attended an awards assembly that honored school yearbooks and newspapers that were outstanding in their field Friday, the group attended talks and speeches in the morning, and in the afternoon did some sightseeing. They walked to Pier 39 and explored Fisherman's Wharf for a couple of hours
Everyone in the group was getting hungry so they drove to Chinatown, checked out some stores and had a traditional Chinese dinner On the last day, they attended two more sessions and went to Ghirardelli square to take a walk down Hyde Beach before racing to the airport to catch the flight home.
Irish Girls
In March , students from our sister school , Sacred Heart School in Tullamore , Ireland , came to Seton for their annual week-long tr i p to Arizona The week was filled with many fun memories, from visiting Tucson to shopping at the Chandler Mall. The visiting students stayed with families from Seton and experienced our campus for a week Emma Bell , a student from Sacred Heart, said that her favorite part about Seton was "all the fun classes that we experienced." Students also participated in fun events after school. One thing that almost every girl from Ireland looks forward to on their trip is visiting the mall. The girls spent hours stopping in every store and spent hundreds of dollars on new outfits and makeup. A new part of the trip this year was getting a free day to spend with their host family. Some girls relaxed for the day and some took the trek up to see the Grand Canyon "It truly was 'grand,"' said Emma Bell describing her visit north to the Grand Canyon On Sunday , both Seton and Irish students went to Tucson and explored the desert landscape. To end the trip, the students and host families got together and had a potluck to top off the week After that, students have to say a hard goodbye, but most will have a chance to travel back to visit later this year in May.
Lowell Observatory
Seton students experienced the Lowell Observatory , home to the magnificent Clark telescope , in Flagstaff, Arizona After hear i ng presentations about the discovery of Pluto and about Percival Lowell , the students attended a private viewing through the telescope , where they got to see the Eskimo planetary nebula , which is the gaseous residue of dying stars . Carly Atkinson , an astronomy lover, said that she "learned a lot about how we study stars, and how much astrology has advanced our understanding of the universe." Organizer Mrs . Sanders has loved astronomy ever since she was a child She used to operate the campus observatory at her alma mater, the University of New Mexico She loves to share her passion in astronomy with people , as "the amazement that people invariably express when they see Saturn or some wispy nebula or faraway galaxy with their own eyes is a delight to witness."

Robby Mead, Mr. Sentinel!
By Madeleine Williamson
The Mr Sentinel award presented at the Prom pep rally went to Robby Mead. For his act he dressed up as Napoleon Dynamite and performed the dance from the movie When asked what inspired him to dress up as Napoleon in front of the whole school he replied that he, "grew up watching the movie hundreds of times" and "thought that this was a really good opportunity to try it out." Robby was excited to see how how people would react to his act. He reported thinking the others trying out for Mr. Sentinel, "all did really well." After everyone had performed their act, students cheered for who they thought deserved to be Mr. Sentinel. In the end, Robby got the most cheers and was crowned Mr. Sentinel of 201 8. He was crowned with a little pink tiara as an award. When asked what he did with the crown he responded, "right after the assembly ended, I let my girlfriend wear it. and I haven t seen it since " Robby would like to thank all of those who helped him put his Napoleon Dynamite act "I definitely want to thank my beautiful girlfriend, Erin Mager, who spent a lot of time helping me learn and choreograph the dance. I also want to thank my dad who spent his own money on my costume."
