The charisms that defined St. Elizabeth Ann Seton our matriarch, are the charisms that define us as a school. Every year we are given a charism to focus on. By the time you are a senior, you will have reflected on all four charisms. We strive to exemplify these charisms in all we do individually and as a community. We let them shine through in our academic classrooms, service projects, and extracurricular activities. As a community , we LOVE each other as we are and accept each other's faults. We possess the COURAGE to face difficult situations and stand up for the truth. We ore endowed with FAITH to trust in God and accept the future He holds for us. And we have the DETERMINA TIO to take the first step toward the rest of our lives and face whatever obstacles are thrown our way. We are a community built on a strong foundation. Individually, we may falter and fall, but the community is always there to pick us up and help us get back on the right path. All members of the Seton community, past and present, have felt the effect of the charisms on their lives and have lived them out in their own special way.

The even1ng started out as just another ordinary homecoming night The gi rl s were dressed in e egan dresses wh1le t e boys ooked strapp1ng 1n their button-downs and ties Groups of teens were busy taking p1ctures and arriving at various restaurants. One of these boys was junior Richard Douglas. He was dining at Serrano s w 1th a group of friends Suddenly, a loud ' bang · rang throughout the restaurant . Someone had fired a gun. Chaos broke loose and people were distraught Richard Douglas the courageous young man he is helped everyone into the back room He was so brave that he decided to go to the front where the man was shot He is a trained I feguard. so h1s insfncts kicked in He put his training to use by helping apply pressure to the wound He said "I don't real y remember what I was hin ing t e whole time but I was try ing to keep the vidim calm by talking to The man was taken to the hospital and released later that even1ng

Richard Douglas exemplif ied tremendous courage in the face of a crisis. He ris ed his own life to ma e sure others were safe and out of harm's way. Courage is defined as ' the quality of m1nd or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, or pain and persevere .' He is truly a grea role model for the char ism of courage .

Many students at Seton demonstrate courage in everyday actions They befriend new students stand up for kids who are having problems serve in the greater community, and much more These examples might not be as life threatening but hey are difficult tasks to perform and just as important. We are all required to manifest courage everyday throug all actions. It IS no easy tas to fulfill ; we must be confident and remember God is always there to help us along the 1ourney. Courage does not mean we do not have fear ; it means we are able to look past this fear and see the greatness at the end.

· uccess is not final, failure is not fatal· 1t is the courage to continue that counts."

eam , All the long practices, tough workouts , and hard work came down to one game, one opportun ity , one chance at a state t it le. When the clock hit zero, the overwhelming feeling of Seton pr ide and accomp li shment could be felt by everyone in the stadium. Fifty-five men achieved what many thought wasn 't possible. They overcame all their struggles and adversity and just played as one team , with one goal in mind, and they didn 't stop fighting until they got there.

Golf is a lot more exciting than people think. It isn't just a bunch of people standing aroundthe game can actually be very intense! An exciting moment from this past golf season happened at the Boys ' State meet. Over 50 spectators and players had the opportunity to watch Junior Austin Nelsen execute an amazing shot. The ball ended up only a foot away from the hole, moments before he took second place in the State meet. Fans from all teams went insane after they witnessed the incredible shot, which goes to show that all the hard work and dedication Sentinel athletes put into their sports really pays off!

Breaking the stereotype is something the Boys' Volleyball team does typically every time they play. With a fairly new team, it is hard for students to wrap their heads around Seton having a guys' team. The amount of talent these boys possess is amazing. Plays, poetry, vocabulary, short stories! Literature class allows the students to delve into different works and gives them a chance to discover different worlds. No matter what level the students are at, literature class teaches the students to have a deeper understanding of literary works. These classes help expand their vocabulary and test their skills with definitions and sentences. Every year, students get to witness literature come alive on the stage. This year, seniors enjoyed the stage production of Emma at The Herberger Theater.

Whether it be Mr. Vetti's continuous note-taking lectures or Mr. Hart's fun activities on World History, or even Mr. Darby's powerpoint presentations, in the end they become priceless pieces of information we will always take with us. In the midst of a debate, our inner Vetti comes out. We start to realize how much we grow intellectually through these classes & we can apply it to everyday life. Like Mr. Vetti tells his American History classes every year, 'Remember, you guys are Chapter 43."

' Good morning my darling chemists !', is something Seton Catholic Chemistry students hear almost every day. This well known phrase exc ites students because they know something fun is in store for them. Sc1ence is one of the most demanding subjects at Seton Catholic but students also f1nd it to be one of the most enjoyab le An exc it ing e xper iment that jun iors look forward to is making their own ice cream at the end of the school year W ith a ll the stress of junior year, students real ly va lue the t imes when they have an opportunity to rela x. Mak ing ice cream is an excellent stress reliever for students, and it also ties in with what is being taught in class Whether or not students add too much salt or not enough sprinkles, they are grateful for the much-needed and well-deserved break . All of the hard work Seton students put into their science classes truly pays off when they solve a tough problem or discover someth ing new and the results can be very rewarding . especially when you get to eat them.

ktlt-fltendiJ. Seniors at Seton Catholic have a variety of science courses to choose from One of the most wellknown courses is Environmental Sc1ence. Math + Review Games = Fun

Although the math courses at Seton are among the most difficult, the many teachers at Seton still make it interesting. With Dr Krings as a teacher, students really enjoy math (whether they like to admit it or not). Dr . Krings ' College Algebra and PreCalculus review games are among the many things seniors !or very ambitious juniors) look forward to for their last year in high school . Students have free reign in designing what they want to do for each review game, whether it is jeopardy, Hunger Games themed, or "mathketball" The review games are both educational in preparing for the upcoming chapter test and fun . One of the only requirements Dr . Krings gives is it must be seasonal and themed - now who could argue with that?

The March lor Life was a live day pilgrimage members of the Students for Life club attended. The students flew to Washington D.C. and stayed at Centro Maria Convent. They .. daily Mass and morning prayer. The pilgrimage focused on protecting the dignity of all human life from conception until natural death. The day after they arrived they attended Mass at the Basilica at Catholic University of America. There were 20 000 people at the Mass! The procession alone took at least 30 minutes to allow all the seminarians priests, bishops. and cardinals to process. The

Mass was so incredible and inspiring and a favorite moment for most who attended. Cardinal O'Malley gave a phenomenal homily which the students said fired them up to go out and profess their faith and beliefs. The next day was the march. They gathered in a grassy area to rally and hear some amazing stories from pro-life supporters. Then march to the Supreme Court began. The streets were filled with 500,000+ people all there for the same purpose: protect life. The experience, though it was freezing and snowing. was indescribable. People were chanting and singing and praying rosaries out loud. Groups would join in with each other, and you could feel the presence of God upon all of them. Every person there had faith that their actions were helping to bring about change for the better. Megan Burke, senior, said "the immensity of the crowd was so overwhelming all you could see were people for miles; it was incredible." According to all the pilgrims. the experience is irreplaceable and something that everyone should participate in.

T his year our scf-ool was blessed with the amazing opportunity to listen to lmmaculee llibagiza spea as part of our parent-student assemblies. This opportunity was special to our Seton community because all grade levels read her book Left to Tell as part of our all-school read. Her story was such a touching story of love, forgiveness, and compassion. Hearing her spea in person was an inspiring experience that all students enjoyed.

Seeing how she forgave the people responsible for the genocide and murders of her family members is inspirational. She is so thankful for the life and gifts she has been blessed despite her struggles and suffering. We all endure suffering and lose hope at times. She taught us the importance and power of love and forgiveness in our lives.

God never gives up on us: even when we have given up all hope. God's love is eternal and is not earned; it just is. The Seton community we have helped build is one full of love and support. You see it everyday when a student helps uplift another s spirit by a simple smile, or when they hold the door open for a teacher whose hands are full.

lmmaculee s words were full of genuine love for us though she barely knew us. We are blessed to have had the opportunity to hear her share her story first-hand.

' knew that my heart and mind would always be tempted to feel anger--to find blame and hate I would always furn immediately to the Source of all true power: I would turn to God and let His love and forgiveness protect and save me."

The 2012 Presidential Election was a tight race between President Barack Obama (0) and Governor M• t Romney (R) Emot•ons flared everywhere from the classroom to the boardroom as people rallied and supported the1r favorite candidate. The outcome seemed uncertain until the night of November 6 , when Obama won 4 more years in the White House, 332 electoral votes to 206.

As high school students, it is important that we stay informed about events going on in the world and in our country For the 2012 election , Mr. Vetti and Mr Darby planned an ' Election Party" as an extra credit opportunity for their students. In early 2010, one of our very own teachers at Seton received some tough news. Mr. Darby, featured left, received he diagnosis of esophageal cancer. Mr. Darby had a tough road ahead. cancer was isolated in his esophagus. c-t and one lymph node, all of which was surgically removed. Cancer victims know best the ;mportance of determination in their road to recovery. It took most of 2010 for Mr. Darby to fight his cancer. He went through three rounds of chemotherapy, a 6-hour surgery, and 28 treatments radiation. Today he remains cancer free. He knew early on he must seek aggressive treatment to defeat the cancer.

With his determined and positive attitude, the support of

and friends, and his trust in God he was able to • '"''"'::.rr-'"'n-"'" this difficult trial. Blessed with so much support from Seton community, his relatives, and his friends, he was able to coach the 2011 Seton Track and Field team. He returned to a full-time teaching position for the 2011-2012 school year. He said " o one knows the m'nd of 'our Friend '' as Benjamin Franklin called Him, on such matters. but I loa at each day as · he Lord hath made" and try to continue to live it, in His grip, with purpose and determination."

Mr. Darby is a prime example of determination-in-action. His situation was a tragic and straining one. He never lost sight of his goal of recovery and never gave up through all of his treatments. He claimed scripture verses like this one forhfied his determination.

· have the strength for everything through Him who .. empowers me.

Sophomores are no lorger the new k1ds on the block They finally know how to open their lockers, where to find their classes, and what the lunch menu 1s that day Sophomores are still underclassmen, but they are no longer intimidated by the "scary " juniors and seniors. They feel as if they finally have a place at the school and have become more comfortable with their peers and classmates. Sophomore year is the first year you can to e those beloved electives - PE, Art, whatever! You get to experience classes with new people from different grades, and you finally get to choose a class that expresses your personality. Sophomores are no lorger at the bottom - they are moving on up to being upperclassmen and the heads of the school sooner than they know.

As Assistant Editor of the Yearbook, I am proud to say that all those long days and nights of relentlessly hunting down students to take pictures of has finally paid off! With just a little bit of chocolate and determination, the final copy of the Seton Catholic 2012-2013 Yearbook is in your hands right now and was made with love from an amazing group of High School Journalists!

As the Photo Editors of the Yearbook, we were able to see so many cool pictures of Sentinels and get a glimpse at the personalities of our peers. We are proud to be a part of this Yearbook Staff, leaving our mark in this edition with all of the memorable moments we were able to capture. We hope you enjoy!

Dear Sentinels,

We triumphed through another year of high school! This year has been full of many memories that are captured inside the Sentinel Volume 59. For some of you this is your first Seton yearbook; for others it is our final. The six ladies plus Mrs. Pearson and Mrs. Kohl in room 108 worked hard to make it the best yearbook ever! The yearbook theme Charisms of a Sentinel was a challenging theme at first for the yearbook staff. The events of this year whether they be winning championships, new friendships, growing in our faith, or completing a challenging course, the charisms were exemplified in all of them. As Sentinels we strive to demonstrate these in our everyday life, and this yearbook helps capture these moments. I would like to thank all my wonderful yearbook staff who put hours of work into this book. It would not be possible without them. I hope you all enjoy and cherish the memories in this yearbook as I have enjoyed creating it for you. Remember to never forget who you are and value the charisms displayed in this book.

Sincerely,

- -
a com together.
