Through the Ey

es of a Sentinel

Somewhere beyond the uniformity of our clothes, the never-ending rules we must follow, and the strong faith we share, we realize our individuality.

It's through our eyes, as Sentinels, that we define our uniqueness.

This is how you stand out at Seton, this is how you shine.

Game Day

There's no week like homecoming week at Seton Catholic High School. This year's Monopoly homecoming theme resulted in some very entertaining homecoming activities. The week started out with a ready . .. set. .. go day where students wore their favorite sports team jerseys and participated in games at lunch. Waterworks day, take a chance day, and spirit day followed. Homecoming week came to a great finish when the Seton football team beat the Safford Bulldogs.

This was the first year that our homecoming dance was not held at Seton. This year's dance was hosted by the San Marcos Hotel. The theme was a Walk Along the Boardwalk. Despite the constant threats of turning the lights on and changing the music, the night was a huge success! Halloween was the best yet for Sentinels. Many seniors spent the evening at Laura Bisso's house, whose parents were generous enough to get a D.J. Other Sentinels enjoyed passing out candy at their homes. There was a broad spectrum of costumes this year, from home made outfits like Barbies or a Gift from God, to store bought costumes like Coal an's creative costume - fro and cane not included.

Mass at Seton

The ability to attend mass at Seton once a month is a privilege. We all pay to go to a school where we are allowed to talk about God openly and without undue judgment. We are lucky to attend a school where we can pray for one another on a daily basis. Daily mass at the chapel is also a great place to go to relax and escape from the crazy world of Seton. We are called to see Jesus in everyone we meet and as a school we must try our hardest to connect with the student body around us by realizing the presence of Christ in each individual.

So Ever band members, and Juniors, Mike Malpiedi and Joe Zylla love rocking out with God. Mike loves practicing for all school masses, 11 Music Ministry is my favorite class of the day. I wouldn't miss it for the world! 11

Senior, Tim Fiorito, encourages us to pray with him during mass.

11 I like Liturgical Arts because we only have to work on Mass Days and I get to stand in front of the whole school and look good! 11

In addition to changes to Seton Catholic, this year Sentinels participated in the Seton- Than. The day was filled with dancing, twister, video games, and our own version of American Idol. Although it was much different from our previous Walk-A-Than, students came together to raise money for our school and everyone ended up having a blast!

Kairos is a great way for Seton juniors and seniors to embrace the relationships in their lives. It is a weekend away from the hectic life of a high school student that will create memories for a lifetime. Kairos XXII candidates bonded outside while sleeping in the freezing night air. The XXIII group learned the versatile meaning of a potato while growing closer together. Both groups have a better understanding of the world around them as well as of themselves. As many who have traveled there before know, the short trip to Chauncy Ranch is indescribable. The XXII and XXIII candidates have had an experience that they will never forget.

Siblings at Seton Catholic were in an overabundance this year. There were over forty Seniors with younger siblings running around Seton. Siblings can be great and they can also be a pain. Some siblings may blackmail you with information they heard about at school, but then there are other siblings who will share their lunch money with you. Siblings may be annoying to wait for after school, and it can be embarrassing if they hear gossip about you, but having a sibling at Seton is overall a fun experience.

Sisters, Senior, Katherine Brandon and Junior, Priscilla Brandon, don't only look almost exactly alike, they also are great friends and totally get along.

Almost twins, sisters Malaika Pitts, Senior, and little sister Jaelyn Pitts, Junior, are best friends .

Although they may not be siblings, Seniors and cousins, Tim Fiorito and Richard Edgars are closer than close.

"I love going to school with Zac again. He is one of the main reasons why I even came back," says Senior, Cori Awender about her little brother, Freshman, Zac Awender. "We usually get along really well, but sometimes I get sick of waiting for him after school and after practice." When asked if this was true, all Zac said was who is waiting for her EVERY morning!"

Our cars range from jumbo diesel trucks to little Volkswagen Bugs. But one thing is for sure, having a car, or truck, at Seton is just one more way to show off your personality!

Whether you elect to spend your free time working, or you are forced by your parents, having a job in high school is both a pain and a really awesome form of expression, at the same time.

What kind of job you have says a lot about you. Working with kids, working with clothes, or working with food are some of the most popular jobs out there.

Anyone who has had a job in high school knows how much the pay blows. Every time you head for your toil, as Ms. Arroyo explains in Social Justice, you feel overworked and underpaid! It is nice, though, to have a little extra cash in your pocket so you don't have to ask your parents, again, to spot you the cash you need for your big date.

But no matter what job you choose to get in high school, everyone agrees that it is a fun, tiring, and exciting learning experience for all!

"I love my job! I used to think Abercrombie and Fitch or American Eagle had nice clothes. Since I started working at My Sister's Closet I've been exposed to Betsey Johnson, True Religion, and Isabella Fiore, and I can't get enough!" Says senior, Cori Awender.

The Boys Basketball team started the season with a lot of change. With only three returning varsity players and a new coach, they were still ranked number 1 in preseason by the Arizona Republic. Although their season ended one week and two games shy of winning a state championship, they still call their season a success.

With a third and successful year for Peer Training at Seton Catholic , barriers are being broken down and discrimination has no place. Mrs. Sandomir, Mrs . Adams, and Mrs. Kubasak have taken the task upon themselves to make this program fun and successful. Meeting once a month with the freshmen students, the upperclassmen show, by example, that the Anti-Defemation League is present on campus . Real life ex amples, mixed with games and activities show the students that everyone can get along if we all just respect one another. With all the hard work by the stu dents and teachers, no one is forgotten or ignored and Seton Catholic becomes a stronger community.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to build a robot. For four years now the Robotics club has welcomed a wide variety of students, although some unskilled, all share an interest in science and engineering. For some the experience helps in getting a career as an engineer, and for all its something they'll remember for the rest of their lives. The purpose of the club has always been to design and engineer a robot capable of competing in competition, but who says you can't party along the way!

There isn't a single person at Seton who can say "What chess club?" Everyone knows about it. It has been around for a pretty long time. Every week students go to Mr. Anthony's room to have fun and play some chess. They're pretty darn good at it too! Although it doesn't ensite as much attention as a sport, it can definetly be considered one. As Mr. Anthony, the club moderator, once said "Chess is intense man, it gets ugly. "

Above: The wise Mr. Anthony dedicates his time to help the students achieve their great success at chess.

SCTV is a challenge. The cast has many obstacles that they face daily. "It's hard to always make sure everyones stories get put it in." Says Anchor Katie DeKing. Then another challenge that they come across is getting the material approved. Most important SCTV's job and BIGGEST obstacle is pleasing their peers. AMBASSADORS

A Day in an Ambassador's Shoes

B eing an ambassador ... What does it really mean? It can mean wearing those eye-catchmg maroon shirts wtth your name and the Seton Catholic seal on them. It can also mean representing the school at various school functions. Well, it is all of the above, plus so much more. Ambassadors attend monthly meetings led by Mrs. Hill and Ms. Peters in the library. Ambassadors are given the chance to bring sh<lclows l (prospective students} to their classes and answer any questions they may have. It is a wonderful way to meet new people and discuss what Seton Catholic has to offer. An ambassador can choose to volunteer to go to a feeder school and tall< about Seton Catholic, answering any questions eighth graders may have. An ambassador is responsible for helping out with the Open House for incoming freshmen and prospective students by giving tours through the classrooms and welcoming the guests. Any ambassador can also join Toastmasters, a program that helps students improve on making and giving speeches. Being an ambassador is a wonderful way to help out at school functions and spread school spirit because "once a Sentinel, always a Sentinel!"

As the Junior class makes their way towards the end of the road at Seton High, the academics get more and more crucial. This year, juniors are presented with a larger variety of classes available. From Honors and AP classes to exciting new religions and various levels of math, to the many choices of elective classes, the junior class has had many options to spice up the school year and make classes more enjoyable.

Religion

History

Above: Christy Bick and Eleanor Beatty share a discussion on the similarities and differences between religious belief systems in World Religions, one of the choices available to juniors for a Religion credit. Above: In Mrs. Morrison's U.S./ AZ History class , students in 4th period copy down questions from the overhead about the Roaring 20's. Juniors are fortunate enough to have the option to be in Mrs. Morrisson's class or in Mr. Clinch's AP History class.

English

Above: Students in Mrs. Olivieri's Chemistry class study their periodic tables while she teaches them how to balance chemical equations.

Math

Left: As a new teacher to the Seton campus, Mr. Korber took over the Algebra 2 classes. He settled in right away and immediately was well-liked by everyone.

Left: Mr. Korber helps Matt Louis with a problem on synthetic division.

Above: Laura Amoretti and Paige Caster discuss their thoughts on The Great Gatsby, one of the many books juniors read this year, in Mrs. Adams English III class.

This year's Junior Retreat was a hit among the students. With the theme of "Finishing the Race", the retreat contained many activites and discussions about getting on the right path in life and racing to the finish line, our ultimate goals. Students were very motivated and touched by the speakers, Jason Pastore and Terry Murphy. The three sessions planned out for the Juniors were about making and accomplishing our goals in life and being challenged to live out the Christian way of life in these goals.

Above: Valerie Echeveste and Jenna Bowers take time out from the retreat to smile pretty for the camera.

Left: Margo Henkaus and Eliana Garibay really enjoyed this retreat. Margo says, "It was actually a lot better than our other retreats. I loved it!"

Right: Timothy Grunkemeyer, "Grunk", and Diego Fernandez participate in one of the many relay races throughout the retreat. This race required a lot of teamwork and communication from your group. Left: Speaker and leader of Life Teen programs across the western U.S., Jason Pastore, speaks about how he found his faith and the journey it took to get him to where he is today. His talk was very appealing to the students, mainly because he had many great stories to tell. Right: A group of juniors participate in one of the more difficult and challenging relay races, as they attempt to wrap toilet paper around every person in the group and then walk to the finish line thout breaking the chain. Left: Valerie Echeveste and Joseph Grubbs have deep discussions in their small group. With their group leader being Mrs. Graham, they learned a lot about faith in their own lives and really loved being able to share their thoughts with the small group.

From pigtails to internet expert, from bike rider to car aficionado, and from our little girl to a most beautiful young adult. all of this seemingly taking place between yesterday and today. While time moves forward, seemingly without regard of our emotions, our memories are forever. You have been a joy from day one and will remain our source of purpose in life. "Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, goegeous, handsome, talented, and fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God . Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you . We were born to make manifest the glory of God within us. It is not just in some, it is in everyone. And, as we let our light shine, we consciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others . This took us so long put together because we couldn't think of all the things we wanted to say ... how proud we are of you, how blessed we feel that God chose us to be your parents, the words of wisdom and encouragement we felt you would need to make it in this crazy world, and then realized you already know them .. . Amanda,

Throughout your life, you have used your gifts of intelligence, creativity and athletic ability to excel in all of your endeavors. Your achievements in academics, cheer, track, soccer and student council would make any parents proud. But most of all, we are proud of the caring young woman that you have become. As you prepare for college, we know that you will be successful in achieving any future goals that you set for yourself. We love you very much.

Love,

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistance. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost proverb. Education alone will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistance and determination alone are omnipotent.

Life is all about choices. Figuring out the right and wrong choices and knowing that each one can slightly to enormously alter your life's path is an incredibly important lesson that you've had to learn early in life. We are blessed to have so many people at out church, in our family and at Seton who support you. We hope you are as proud as we are that you decided to graduate with the kids you started Seton with four years ago. Cori, you do now and always will have our support.
