The theme of this yearbook is "Time Passages." Time shows m •ts past, present, and future years. Its mam focus, though, •s on Seton in its present.

The main goal of Time Passages is to show how eton's but still g_rows closer together. Seton is now in 1ts th1rty-f1fth year of existence and is closer than ever. The family atmosphere is one of the many redeeming qualities that has been passed down through the generations.

The theme i portrayed by a stopwatch . The stopwatch shows that time continues to advance and that over the years, people change. Your family at Seton may change over the years, but you will never lose your place in the family Seton makes its mark on a person and will always play an important role in your life. Like time, your bond as a member of the family never ends.

Last year's seniors show their spirit.

In "Time Passages", we are shown how our past has changed through time, how different the society is from the past 35 years. As we go through and imagine what life would be like if we lived through that time, we will begin to treasure our fondest memories.

Yes, .Julie Rae!!

As we look and laugh at our present way of life, let's think of how this year's "Time Passages" have affected us: the true lessons we have learned in and outside of the classroom and the way we've grown and matured as the year progressed. These will carry us into the future, so let's look through the year and remember some of our fondest memories.

This year's SADD group is working very hard. They have been working together to help students understand the dangers in driving while drinking or while someone else has been drinking.

Mr Collins, the moderator, says, "The purpo e of SADD is to inform the students that they have a choice to make. They don't have to drink to have fun but if they choose to drink, then don't choose to drive."

ADD gave a presentation for the student body about Drinking and Driving. Mrs. Jane Slattery talked about being victims of drunken driver as was her brother who is now confined to a wheelchair. Then a movie about victims was shown to the entire student body.

There was a Mock Rock, Spirit Week, and Round Up. tudent Council has also been busy planning blood and food drives, coordinating assemblies, and planning dances. The Student Council members promoted a lot of spirit this year and represented their classes well.

After a successful hike in the uperstition Mountains, and many other scenic hikes in Arizona, the hiking club had many adventures to talk about. They learned to bring their own food and water but most of all, they learned a lot about nature and its surroundings. During several of the hike , Mr. Richard, their moderator, would top the groups and explain many things to them, such as flowers, plants, and animals. Overall, this was a great year for the hiking club!

This is the second year Chess Club has taken place at Seton. Members meet once a week on Friday. They mostly play on the computers since there is a more abundant supply than chess boards. They now have more experienced members ready for tournaments.

The eton inging entinels bring the gift of music to all through the choral group. The choral group is directed by Mrs. Elizabeth Mariner. Mrs. Mariner pushes the members to sing to their full potential.

The choral group gives three concerts at eton and travels all over the valley performing at schools, nursing homes, events, and many other places such as the Civic Center.

Mrs. Mariner has said that music is an art and that it should be respected, but most of all, it should be enjoyed by everyone.

The week of April 9, 1989, a group of Seton's students traveled to Washington, D.C., for an $890 Close-Up experience. To go on this expensive voyage, the sophomores, juniors, and seniors involved organized fund-raisers to add to the $900 donation from Donna Shin and Gene Rice and the Merabank Foundation.

Close-up is a special program created for students interested in government and the democratic process. The Senators and the Representatives, among other government officials, become more than far-off leaders as they discuss and expose both sides of current issues with expertise. High School students from all over the country are able to participate in Close- Up's informative and worthwhile voyage to the U.S. Capital.

This consists of one mass per month, one reconciliation service, and several prayer services including Thanksgiving and Christmas. Being a musician is not a prerequisite to being in this group as there are many other duties involved. When asked what their main purpose was they said, "We are trying to make all the liturgical functions more meaningful."

The etonian, our yearbook for 1989, was produced by hardworking students. The editor this year was senior Kevin McPeek. He was assisted by the staff and faculty members which include: Br. Gattone, Mrs. Fraser, and Mr. Mariner.

Going over thousands of photos, the staff tried to capture the theme "Time Pas ages". This particular theme was chosen because of Seton's 35th Anniversary. The yearbook presents glimpses of the past, the present story of life at Seton, and views of the possible future as well.

At Seton, as at most high schools, freshmen find themselves making constant adjustments.

They come in, self-conscious for the most part. By the end of the freshman year, however, they are self-confident.

They enter Seton, with just a few exceptions, as strangers, even feeling isolated. By May, they hopefully feel a real part of their class and of the Seton family.

Big events for freshmen, traditionally, are orientation, initiation, and the class retreat.

By sophomore year, Seton students no longer look upon themselves growing into new roles and accepting new responsibilities.

Sophomore year offers opportunities to begin showing some real leadership, to develop even stronger unity, to feel and demonstrate true school spirit.

Approaching all these goals, sophomores traditionally look forward to their class retreat, as well as finishing off their underclass days.

Homecoming and Round-Up mean more to them, since they know what to expect and what is expected of them.

The Porn and Cheer's main goal thi year was to promote school spirit. The girls went to camp for four days and to A U. They put in a lot of time and practice, Tue day through Thursday from 3 to 5. The girl would also bring food and drinks to the teams during games and practices. They went to all the home games and many away games. They would cheer to the end no matter what. With all the time and practice no wonder we have such good teams.!

The JV cheer was picked this fall and the choices were: Captain Erin Moore, Liz Engel, Christa Rodrigue, and tacey Estes-Gonzales. The JV cheer cheers for girls' JV and Varsity basketball teams. The girls practiced long and hard and you can tell that because it has all paid off. The JV cheer did a wonderful job this year.

Although the season didn't turn out the way most wished, the Varsity progressed with pride. The games were often close until the end. The team had a good and bad experience but grew to become better players. The season was not a failure, but rather a true "inspiring" learning experience for the young team.

The "Junior Sentinels" were anything but junior! Their spirit, attitude, and will for victory were seen through the whole season! Their skills quickly increased, and many became great players. Their determination is to be admired and their future seasons are to be better than this year!

The 1988 football team, led by captains, Israel Torres and Tom Slattery, came out of the season with two victories against Bourgade and Gila Bend respectively. The team showed great spirit and determination throughout the season. Coach cott Winters said that the inexperienced members did well learning new skills and formations.

Junior Brett churr says, "Gee, it was a great year!" The team is very enthusiastic and is sure that next year's record will be even better!

"Oops! I think I forgot something!" exclaims Israel Torre . "Just hanging around outside!" "He's mine!"
69
"What a year!" shouts Coach Winters.

With a prom1smg junior class that composed most of the var ity team, the young ballclub looked forward to the new season. Juniors Jeff Gutierrez and Michael Zoucha were the captains of this year's squad. Back in Novern her when the season started, Mr. Mullin said, "We have a young team but we can win." Mr. Mullin was assisted by Mr. Fred Contreras who also helped coach the JV team with Br. David Haas. Through tough practices and nail-biting games the Sentinels have brought together a good season.
