AS NARRATED BY JOHN WHITNEY ONESPOT ONE NIGHT, TWO GIRLS WERE SITTING OUTSIDE OF THEIR TEEPEE. One of them said, “Friend, that star over there is very pretty. I wish that it would become my husband here.”

The next morning the two girls went to gather firewood. As they were collecting the wood, a handsome young man appeared and walked up to the girl. “What are you doing?” she asked him. The young man said, “I have come to be with you. I was minding my own business in the sky. ‘I wish he could become my husband’, you said to me. For that reason I have come down to you.”“Close your eyes,” he told her.

The girl kissed her friend goodbye and then she closed her eyes.“Now open your eyes,” he told her. She opened her eyes; they were taken by spirit to a different world – in the sky.

In time they had a child. After awhile, the man told his wife, “In the wild turnips you dig up, there is one that protrudes from the buffalo dung. Be warned: do not dig it up.” After awhile the woman and her son were both walking around, each digging up wild turnips. The little boy said to his mother, “Dig this one up for me.” It just so happened that this was the one protruding from the buffalo dung. The boy’s mother refused. To her detriment, the boy began to cry unceasingly. Finally, she dug it up for him. She removed the buffalo dung from the wild turnip. She looked towards the earth and where the turnip had been. Amazingly, there was now a hole she could see through. The people she saw were playing the hoop and wheel game.

She stared at her homeland, now in full view, and began to cry. When she finished crying, they walked home.

They arrived at their teepee. After a while her husband came home with food and he said to her, “I can see that you have been crying. Did I not warn you not to dig up that root?” Then the woman said, “This boy was crying very hard for the wild turnip that was protruding from the manure, so I dug it up for him, and I saw my relatives again.”Her husband invited the stars to the teepee. He said to them, “You all go hunting and gather hides for me.”Straightaway they tracked and killed a buffalo. They gave him the hides.

He cut them into long strips. When he finished cutting them he said, “Now then,” and the woman, along with her son, were put into a rawhide sling. They were laced up completely. They took her to the hole that was left after she dug up the wild turnip. They stretched out the rope they had tied together into one long strip. And then, down through the hole, they began lowering the boy and his mother.

Down below, some people were playing the hoop game. One of the boys, whose eyes were too gummy to play the hoop and wheel game, was laying down beside them on a blanket. “I wonder what that is falling down?” he said, when the others looked up.“There is nothing there,” someone said to him.“What I say is true. Something is coming towards us,” he said. Then, like him, they laid down on their backs. Someone sprinkled dirt into their eyes. “Maybe it is your gummy eyes,” they kept on saying to him. “I am telling the truth,” he repeated. After awhile, they all laid down like him again, and this time they saw the object dropping downwards. And then someone said, “Put a robe under.”They held up a blanket and, into it, the two people fell.They undid the hide very quickly and found the woman and the boy, and that is how it came to be that they came back down to earth.

At night, the little boy would shine.And then, after a long time past, again the woman and boy returned to the sky.
