Albert Frey (American, born Switzerland, 1903-1998), Frey House II, 1963-1964, addition 1970-1971, Collection Palm Springs Art Museum, Bequest of Albert Frey, 55-1999.1

Among the most significant examples of Palm Springs’ wealth of midcentury modern architecture, Frey House II showcases the architect’s insightful and futuristic ideas around making every aspect of small space living count. Equally important is Frey’s masterful use of durable industrial materials (cinderblock, steel, fiberglass and glass) that endure the rigors of severe desert climate, even after the passing of five decades. Perched upon the mountain overlooking the entire desert floor, it offers 360 degree views of the San Jacinto and Chocolate Mountains, and the valley floor stretching as far as the Salton Sea. Frey’s design is understated, yet sophisticated, perfectly capturing the adage: less is more.

Frey House II was gifted to the Palm Springs Art Museum by Frey’s estate, and an extensive restoration was undertaken to make the house ready for public viewing.
