GILLMAN RESIDENCE, 1948 RESTORED MID-CENTURY MASTERPIECE Described by architectural historian and author Steven Keylon as one of architectural designer and builder Herbert W. Burns’ “more lavish homes,” this Little Tuscany residence in Palm Springs is now a Mid-Century Modern masterpiece. Partially demolished and sitting neglected for many years, the 1948 home of Dr. and Mrs. Gillman now reveals a phenomenal restoration by highly respected Thomboy Properties.

Inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier in the style of Late Moderne, a precursor to what would later be termed “Modernism”, the design of this home is grounded squarely in that vernacular: horizontal lines with flat roofs, cantilevered overhangs, vertical piers, planters, and grids of reeded glass. Indoors, Burns focused on what Keylon describes as the “fundamentals of good living.” He designed a home that was functional, spacious and light-filled.

The Gillman house was built to take advantage of the desert’s natural beauty and appealing climate.

Burns captured the indoor-outdoor lifestyle by seamlessly running his trademark Arizona sandstone from the outside through to the inside of the home. He extended livability to the outside with wide horizontal overhangs for shade and sun protection.

Approximately 4,700 square feet, this welcoming residence reveals a private half-acre homesite with a 3-bedroom, 3.5-bath main house and a 2-bedroom, 1-bath guest house. Its remarkable restoration plays off its linear design and adds rooftop solar, poured terrazzo floors, Fleetwood sliding-glass doors and windows, floating bathroom vanities, MCM lighting fixtures, and modern systems.

A custom kitchen embraces its heritage and incorporates gorgeous teak cabinetry, large island and pro-level appliances. Reeded obscure-glass entry gates and privacy walls frame grounds that now host a large pool, spa, fire pit, and a covered patio with outdoor kitchen.

In addition to his residential commissions in Palm Springs, Burns’ trademark work is displayed in several apartment hotels, including the Hideaway (originally the Town & Desert), Holiday House and the Orbit Inn, to name a few.
