INTERVIEW TTG: What’s new in the world of Muriya Tourism Development? This year, Muriya is celebrating five years of hotel contributions, during which we developed close to 900 four- and five-star hotel rooms, and leveraged our international touristic network to introduce six direct weekly flights from leading European destinations. From the outset, we have invested $620 million and have continued to work hand-in-hand with the Government of Oman to spearhead the growth of the Sultanate’s high-end tourism, real estate and leisure sectors. We are continually striving to provide a wider base of travellers with the opportunity to enjoy Salalah as a year-round destination. We are extremely satisfied that this expansion in tourist arrivals is benefiting not only our owned hotels but all other hotels in the Governorate of Dhofar. The strong, uninterrupted growth in tourism which Salalah has enjoyed year-onyear is a clear indicator that our efforts are bearing fruit, spurring job creation, creating opportunities for SMEs and empowering local communities with the economic benefits the sector has delivered.

TTG: Muriya is well known for its eco-sensitivity and dedication to sustainability. What are some of the measures taken to ensure its developments comply with the eco-friendly ethos of the country? Since inception, we have looked to build a sustainable tourism industry that nurtures the local environment and preserves its natural wonders. We believe that nature and local eco-systems are a part of what makes Oman such a special destination and understand the need to develop in a manner that is responsible and maintains the environment so that it can be enjoyed for years to come. To this end, we have continuously invested in eco-friendly designs that put our natural surroundings first. We also developed 15 beachfront eco-lodge huts built entirely from natural materials in Hawana Salalah. These lodges will test the water and if they prove popular with visitors, we will expand them.

TTG: What’s in the pipeline for Muriya? Our focus is entirely on investing in the Sultanate and supporting its growth into a major hub for tourism in the MENA region. That has been our target from the outset and through the more than $620 million we have invested, we are continually striving to work alongside Oman’s Government. We are moving ahead with plans to develop Muriya’s third project, City Walk Muscat, located in the heart of the capital. This will be a vibrant central beachfront commercial complex with an upscale five-star hotel, exclusive retail area, restaurants, cafés and a dedicated cinema complex.

DEDICATED TO THE SULTANATE

Additionally, we are preparing to inaugurate a nine-hole golf course designed by world-renowned experts, Harradine Golf. The course is the only one in Muscat which enjoys both mountain and sea views, and will provide visitors with a unique, blended environment that brings to life a one-of-a-kind experience unlike any other in the Sultanate. We will also begin constructing Salalah’s first waterpark, which will open in 2018.

TTG: And finally, how do you predict Oman’s tourism industry will develop over the next decade? Oman, as the fastest growing tourist destination in the region, has a wealth of opportunities with its rich biodiversity, wide range of attractions, 3,000

kilometres of pristine beaches and a culture of hospitality that has been refined over centuries. No country in the MENA region offers such a complete package of attractions and cultural diversity, and soon, with the completion of new infrastructural projects, the destination will attract even more people from around the world. Oman’s government has been following a strategic diversification plan, something that Muriya has been committed to since our establishment. Following this vision of economic development and diversification, Oman's infrastructure, innovation and investment in tourism has and will continue to reach new heights, and the government’s role is a fundamental pillar of the private sector’s success in catering to the burgeoning tourism industry.
