SPOTLIGHT MACAU markets normally come first to Hong Kong and then take another one hour ferry ride to Macau. We are now working with travel agencies in Hong Kong to offer Macau as a ‘stop-over’ destination for those guests who visit Hong Kong.” The Middle Eastern tourist is emerging as a significant new player, with hotels such as Grand Coloane Resort and Conrad Macao, Cotai Central adapting their product to further attract this market segment. “We are seeing opportunities to cater to both the Middle Eastern and the Sub-continental markets. As a result, late last year, we became the only fully Halal-certified hotel in Macau and are beginning to see a positive outcome of this decision,” explained McLauchlan. General manager, Conrad Macao, Cotai Central, Bede Barry added: “Accommodating a global mix of clientele can be perceived to be challenging at times, however, Conrad Macao, Cotai Central frequently offers localised packages geared towards different clientele across the

globe including the Middle East.” Commenting on the efforts at Mandarin Oriental, Macau, director of marketing and communications, Ada Chio de la Cruz said: “Our main feeder markets include China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Japan, but we have also been targeting travellers from the Middle East, the US and Europe. The Middle East has always been one of the markets that the hotel wants to explore. The hotel will satisfy these guests’ needs with its lifestyle packages, personalised dining experiences and tailor made offers.”

COVERING ALL BASES Another tactic currently being implemented by Macau’s tourism industry, is the increase of non-gaming entertainment and inclusive packages that are expected to further lure families and cultural tourists. Talking to TTG about the shifting perspective of tourism in Macau, Barry said: “Macau itself has become a cultural centre and a heritage destination. It is extremely important for Macau to evolve towards becoming a final destination with multiple offerings, instead of being seen as a stopover for tourists within the region.” “As part of Sands Resorts Cotai Strip Macao, guests who stay at Conrad Macao can enjoy an extensive range of entertainment shows from around the world, catering to both families and leisure travellers. facilities and operations are in compliance with environmental standards,” commented general manager, Mövenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea, Peter Hoesli to TTG. “We believe that an appropriate balance can and should be achieved between environmental goals and economic health. More than describing our resort as an eco-hotel, we are committed to sustainability and we intend to be a leader in responsible environmental management.”

CONVERTED TREE HUGGERS These loose and often misinterpreted definitions can be further examined by looking at the varied pool of consumers for this growing niche. Often simply seeking authentic, local or unique experiences, rather than following a particular moral compass, these travellers rarely call themselves ‘eco tourists’ as Tarazi explained to TTG. “Eco tourism is an industry term. Consumers do not identify themselves as eco tourists. They are travellers seeking unique experiences when they travel. We are noticing a rapid increase in the numbers of tourists wanting experiences as part of their trips. They are no longer satisfied with merely sightseeing, they want to ‘sight do’. Eco tourism, being one of the prime suppliers of experiences, is seeing increased demand. As a result, there are also more experience providers in the region emerging, focusing on nature and eco tourism.” Indeed, in an auspicious turn of events, EcoHotels is seeing the surprisingly contagious benefits of its own unique form of eco tourism at its Feynan Ecolodge property in Dana Biosphere. “An interesting observation from our work at Feynan Ecolodge relates to our initial expectations and what actually happened. When we first took over the management of Feynan, we thought that the visitors will be mainly ‘tree huggers’, hardcore environmentalists,” explained Tarazi. “The reality was very different. Most of the guests arriving at Feynan were regular travellers looking for nature and local community based experiences. However, through their visit to Feynan, their interaction with the staff and the environmental practices and presentations that they saw, they left us as converted ‘eco tourists’, [Meaning] in the sense that many are likely to start

Also more recently we are seeing Koreans and Chinese visitors.” “Egyptians, especially the youth, are now starting to take more of an interest and bookings with locals are on the increase. environmental or social responsibility. And yet, through the dust clouds of construction, and extreme extravagance, eco tourism in the Middle East is quietly gaining ground, finding its feet and increasingly amassing a growing number of loyal and dedicated customers.

HONOURING THE ENVIRONMENT

The longlist we have just announced for the 2015 Awards has the widest reach so far - with 206 organisations from 69 different countries worldwide, and representation of every continent on the planet. This is a reflection of how important and recognised responsible tourism is becoming globally. TTG: How can this niche be further promoted and prioritised internationally?

Tourism Awards, run with local partners and presented at World Travel Market Africa in Cape Town. The year 2015 has also seen the launch of the Irish Responsible Tourism Awards with our local partners ICRT Ireland. TTG: How does the Middle East fare as a responsible or eco tourism destination?

Although the Middle East may be more wellknown for lavish, super-luxury resorts, there are interesting examples of responsible tourism in the region. Within Oman there are broadly-held views, on the importance of preserving cultural heritage - a good example is the programme of restoration of Oman’s forts and maintenance of traditional events
