INTERVIEW

STREAMLINING THE PROCESS Sabre, a leading technology solutions provider to the nearly $8 trillion travel industry, has been busy working to improve its offering to streamline the client experience. Tatiana Tsierkezou catches up with senior vice president air line of business, Sabre, Jorge Vilches, who sheds some light on the company’s evolution

: What would you like to share with our readers? We want to tell the world about the next generation of retail and distribution, and along these lines, we have a series of products that are being enhanced or that are new to the market that will make a big difference. One of them is the enhancement of New Sabre Red Workspace. This is a point of sale product for travel agents, but we are continuously working on it, and now we’re going to roll it out throughout 2018 globally. You’re going to see that friendly user interface everywhere, and the new version very much replicates an airline’s ‘.com’ webpage. It’s super user-friendly, you can see the branded fares that were not there before as easily, which is new, and a series of different elements that will make the life of an agent easier, helping them to work faster and more efficiently. At the same time, we recently announced at STX in Dallas – our big event – a new commercial distribution platform that includes a new version of our PSS (our whole reservation system), including some other commercial products that we have in our portfolio, not only for distribution but for revenue management or inventory management, for itineraries – things like that. So, all of that is coming. That will all happen in the second semester of 2018. We have been investing a lot of time and energy into that. We have a new executive team and a new focus across the company. : Let’s reflect on 2017. How was that year for Sabre and how do you predict 2018 will go? Well, 2017 was an important year for Sabre because it was a year of internal changes, reorganisation and a new team. We gained a new CEO in 2016, and in 2017 he implemented all of these changes. The results were good. We have been growing in different regions, especially where we didn’t have that much of a presence, for example in Africa and in Europe. 2018 looks really promising for us because we are getting some very important new contracts, both on the distribution side and the IT side. We have high expectations for 2018 and we are changing the way we work on the IT side – we’re moving almost all of our services to the cloud, which has a lot of flexibility. We have some internal and external clouds. We’re also working a lot on microservices, which will speed up our time to market and it will be much better for our clients. : What is Sabre focused on at the moment? Pretty much all of our attention is focused on NDC. NDC literally means New Direct Capabilities. This is a standard launched by IATA and it’s not a new way to commercialise; its not a new process – it’s just a standard. The traditional distribution and offer is created in the Global Distribution System (GDS) with three pieces of data: itineraries, prices from airlines and availability. An airline gives us all of this information, we put it together and there you have your offer. NDC will allow us to include much more information in that offer, such as frequent flyer programmes, type of segments (i.e corporate traveller), etc. The only way that airlines could segment up until now was based on cabin, length-of-stay, advanced purchase, but not much else. The options were very limited and rigid. Now with NDC, you can include a lot of information and create personalised offers for different segments. So, if an airline has a corporate contract with a company, it can have specific prices for those specific corporate travellers that may differ for another corporation. NDC brings more options and content for airlines to differentiate between segments, and they can launch tailored offers for students, retirees etc. By doing this, airlines can connect through the GDS with all of this additional content, or directly to agencies or corporations. It gives that flexibility. We are very much focused on NDC. We are going to become NDC level three – which is the highest aggregator level – in the second semester of this year. We’re really excited about that!

12 July 2018

ttgmena.com

INTERVIEW

: Looking to the future, what could be the next ground-breaking change for Sabre? We are already talking about beyond NDC. I believe NDC will bring more value and more content, but the world doesn’t stop there. The next step is going to be based on data and analytics – artificial intelligence. One of three bookings made globally passes through our system. Imagine the amount of data we have with that! But it’s not only the bookings; with the new technologies (OTAs, Metasearch), people are shopping much more. Last year, the number of bookings increased by 5.6 per cent globally. The level of browsing increased by 90 per cent. The amount of information has almost doubled. That is a lot of information, and we have that. Using that data, we can understand how people behave and what customers want. Now customers want more personalised offers, and that is the future of travel – making sure that we can use all of that rich content to better serve the customer needs. Artificial intelligence is the next step, and that will be achieved by using all of that data. When you really understand your customer needs, those super high-tech systems will start making decisions for themselves to optimise the offer for you. It’s going to take some time, but we are seeing the first stages now. It could take two to three years.

NDC brings more options and content for airlines to differentiate between segments, and they can launch tailored offers.

DESTINATION LEBANON ebanon’s vivacity has long illuminated the Middle East with its rich history, awe-inspiring mountain and seascapes, exuberant nightlife, world-famed cuisine and scintillating city of Beirut, which is often referred to as the ‘Paris of the Middle East’. The country is a tourism expert, equipped with all of the necessary means

to please even the most discerning tourist. Elaborating on this was head of sales, CORAL Beirut Al Hamra Hotel, Jessica Abdallah: “Lebanon has always been a destination with a bouquet of tourism services. You can always come for business, leisure, cultural or religious tourism and much more. The broad variety of tourism products makes Lebanon a stand-out destination.” Travellers have persistently scoped out Lebanon for its Levantine-Mediterranean culture, as well as its modern European take on Arabic hospitality, where everyone is welcome to experience the best of both worlds. Diving further into the details of Lebanon’s prowess, general manager, Phoenicia Hotel, Beirut, Dagmar Symes said: “One of the prime draws is always the rich heritage of the country, with a wealth of ancient sites and ruins to visit.

A place where Arabic heritage and European affluence merge into a divine union, Lebanon offers tourists something truly extraordinary. Aleksandra Wood speaks to the country's tourism industry experts to uncover transformative trends and forecasts

Culture and art are also strong attractions, especially as Lebanon’s profile as a creative art hub is on the rise. It is also increasingly seen as a lively culinary and wine destination. Lebanon is quite unique in this region in being able to offer all of this in one place.”

DESTINATION LEBANON with simple sightseeing, today, they are seeking authentic travel experiences. They are curious to know about the country’s culture, [thereby] engaging with the people, going to places visited by the locals and trying authentic food. Putting it simply, travellers want to venture into their world and be a part of the culture.” And beyond the classic interest in natural wonders, history and retail, new trends are rising to the fore, as revealed by U Group WorldWIDE’s Nammour: “When visiting Lebanon, travellers look for experiences ranging from wine tasting, archeological discoveries, museums, sports and adventure, to nature hiking and holistic retreats. Some categories, such as families, [may prefer] to attend fun shows with entertaining and educational activities.” Nammour further noted that social curiosities, unusual architecture, personalised experiences, unexplored trails, as well as improved nightlife seem to be the highlight of travellers’ journeys to Lebanon this season. Interestingly, the number of local residents travelling abroad for holidays is significantly reducing. Families are instead opting for a weekend escape to local resorts in the company of friends and relatives. This has made a definitive impact on Lebanon’s economy – another positive change warmly embraced by its tourism industry. Meanwhile, religious tourism is an ever-flowing trend within the country. Lebanon remains a pivotal destination for pilgrimage and its holy lands have welcomed many a religion from across the globe. Ramada Downtown Beirut’s Malouf disclosed: “Seniors travellers
