During a single day, a traveller may enjoy the beach and then head to the mountains and visit many picturesque villages in less than an hour’s drive. : What is the tourism target for Cyprus? Last year was a record-breaking year for Cyprus tourism (reaching 3.65 million tourists) and the prospects for 2018 are positive, with a forecast of a five per cent increase in the total number of visitors to the island. This is due to the image of the island as a safe destination, the high level of hospitality services offered, the traditional Cypriot hospitality, the increased connectivity to Cyprus from different destinations as well as the high level of repeaters, exceeding 40 per cent. The people that visit Cyprus always have many reasons to visit again.

Furthermore, during the last few years there have been massive renovation projects at the hotels all over Cyprus and many new hotels are coming up shortly. Additionally, the

new Ayia Napa Marina and the Casino resort in Limassol are under construction. : Regarding the GCC, which specific markets is the CTO aiming to entice to the island? The main market for Cyprus from the GCC region is the UAE, and this year, with the launch of Cobalt Air’s new direct flights from Abu Dhabi to Larnaca International Airport, there are positive signs for further developing the market.

Set to launch in 2021, the $292.9 million Ayia Napa Marina is currently being developed. Upon completion, it will house 190 apartments, 29 villas, a 600-berth fullservice marina and retail, waterfront dining and lifestyle amenities.

Furthermore, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are important source markets for Cyprus in the GCC region. I strongly believe that for everybody yearning for a short break and escape from the stressful, noisy and hot Dubai, Cyprus is an ideal welcoming destination, having in mind the favourable weather conditions, the hospitality of the Cypriot people, gastronomy, the numerous picturesque traditional villages, the Troodos forest and National Geopark,

from this region has been very positive. : What does the GCC market generally go for when visiting Cyprus? What do they want during their holidays? It proved to be that tourists who are visiting Cyprus from the GCC are looking for luxury – pure luxury, spas and very lavish five-star hotels. Also, luxury accommodation in the mountains is a new trend for GCC travellers. They are seeking the best and Cyprus can definitely fulfil their desires.

Cyprus will be welcoming two Radisson Blu-branded hotels, including one near the Larnaca Port and another located a mere 15-minute drive from Larnaca International Airport. Aphrodite Hills Resort in Kouklia has attained the highest standard recognition in golf, the PGA National, Cyprus. The golf course is undergoing a major investment upgrade of $2.9 million and a full modernisation process, including the rebuilding of greens and bunkers.

: What’s next for the CTO? What’s the action plan for the rest of 2018? Since last May, we have been working very closely with our PR agent, Action Global Communications. Due to this cooperation, we have intensified our marketing activities; we’ve had press trips and familiarisation trips for agents, and we have had a lot of coverage in local media – both electronic and print. What we are planning for the next year is just another year of intensive marketing activities, aiming to both familiarise the professionals with the destination as well as increase awareness on what Cyprus has to offer.

Amara Cyprus will be opening its doors this year on the outskirts of Limassol. It will house 207 sea view rooms, a signature spa plus much more.

The journalists and travel agents that I have met lately in Cyprus were amazed by what Cyprus has to offer. They have discovered many new options for luxury and active June 2018

One of our many unique selling points is the location of Ayla Golf Course on our doorstep, an 18-hole par-72 championship golf course, masterfully designed by Greg Norman, and the local and international golf community will be a big focus for us,” he said. But it doesn’t end here; the Kingdom has an endless list of developments in the pipeline, as explained JTB’s Arabiyat: “There are new developments happening in Jordan, which include major hotel and conference centre openings. As well as Hyatt Regency Aqaba, the Ayla development will be welcoming Al Multaqa, a new major convention centre, which is scheduled to open in 2019. The brand-new W Hotel, located in the heart of the new downtown (Al Abdali), is now open, while The RitzCarlton and St. Regis-branded properties are currently under construction.” Meanwhile, Kempinski hotels in Jordan are making sure that their portfolios stay fresh. According to Arabiyat, Kempinski Hotel Amman will be welcoming a new conference centre during the summer season of 2018. Adding to this, Saed shed light on various other developments at both Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea and Kempinski Hotel Aqaba Red Sea. “At Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea, we are currently developing a new wedding venue called Inanna Terrace, which is located on the beach and can accommodate up to 700 guests. The new Inanna Terrace will certainly take any wedding, social event, gala dinner and car launch experience to the next level. This brand-new venue is expected to open at the end of Q3 and provides panoramic views of the Dead Sea.” Adding to this, the hotel has plans to renovate its Ishtar village rooms, suites and Royal Villas, introduce SMART services through high-tech systems such as IPTV systems, and upgrade the kids’ club. “This is in addition to the recent projects that took place in various areas of the hotel, such as installing new state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment in our meetings and conference facilities, upgrading our WiFi services and the renovation of all June 2018

MELTING POT OF CULTURES Despite a unique millennia-old history intricately infused with Asian, Russian and Arabic culture, a Silk Road legacy, breathtaking architecture, aweinspiring landscapes and grass roots hospitality, the region of Central Asia has so far managed to bypass becoming a mass tourism destination. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are all home to experiences that can satisfy any traveller, from the backpacker to the visitor seeking five-star treatment. Despite their proximity to one another, the five ‘stans’ (Persian for ‘country of’) offer diverse tourist products, a refection of unique cultures, histories and landscapes. Whatever you go for, you’ll meet that ‘off the beaten track’ flavour that makes you feel like you’re one of the first to visit. UZBEKISTAN

CAPITAL CITY: TASHKENT LANGUAGE: UZBEK SIZE: 448,978 km2 POPULATION: 32,979,000

BEST KNOWN FOR... Being the heart of the ancient, legendary Silk Road, the ancient network of trade routes that linked Rome and the Middle East with China. Uzbekistan is also known for the breathtaking architecture in its second largest city, Samarkand. Located in the centre of the ancient city, Registan Square is the most famous. This monumental gem of medieval oriental sacred architecture joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. Registan, meaning ‘sandy place’, was the town square where the local community gathered to hear proclamations, trade and witness executions.

DID YOU KNOW... Samarkand has a stake in winemaking? The local tradition dates back two centuries when a Russian vintner laid the land to establish the Khovenkro winery. Today, you can enjoy a wine-tasting tour for a taste of Uzbek wine and cognacs. The Samarkand Museum of Winemaking is located at the winery and is a treasure trove about the not inconsequential contribution the region has made to the world of wine.

BEST KNOWN FOR... Its mountainous terrain which offers unforgettable trekking and contact with locals for once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Relatively easy to reach from Dushanbe are the Fann mountains in the north of the country with a range of trails starting from just beyond the famed Iskanderkul mountain lake (named after Alexander the Great). For the truly intrepid, a trek in the Pamirs in the east of the country is a must. These mountains, among the highest in the world, are further from the capital and the surrounding infrastructure, the Pamir Highway, is not well developed. You need impeccable planning and advice from experienced trekkers to reach this range, but the beauty and magnificence of these mountains make it worth the effort. If short trips are more your thing, there are numerous trekking options around Dushanbe and the Shirkent Valley.

The Badakhshan EcoCultural Tourism Association is building on the recognition to attract more tourists to the region.

KAZAKHSTAN

KYRGYZSTAN BEST KNOWN FOR... Being the ‘Switzerland of Central Asia’. Nearly 95 per cent of Kyrgyzstan is over 1,000m above sea level and is home to three peaks more than 7,000m high. This is not surprising, as four-fifths of the country is taken up by the Central Asian, snowypeaked Tian Shan mountain range. A topography of alpine meadows, crystal clear mountain rivers and lakes make Kyrgyzstan an ideal location for rafting, hiking, horseback treks climbing in the summer and skiing and snowboarding in the winter. One of the most famous and popular tourist spots in Kyrgyzstan is Lake Issyk-Kul, the second largest alpine lake in the world.

has translated into a high standard of tourism infrastructure and a futuristic capital city that could almost rival Dubai for its vision (its shopping mall has a man-made beach) featuring the big names in 21st century architecture. In contrast, the county’s largest city, Almaty, has a more European vibe with leafy avenues, a nod to the legacy of 19th century Russian influence. For adventurers, there’s hiking in the renowned central Asian Tian Shan mountain range and valleys, impromptu safaris in the steppe region and grass roots hospitality in remote villages.

DID YOU KNOW... Kazakhstan was recently voted among the top five countries for food tourism or CIS visitors? The country’s meat-heavy cuisine stems from the days of central Asian nomadism and features its signature dish, beshbarmak, a combination of boiled meat, noodles and spicy onion sauce. Also, on the menu are meat- or fishfilled pelmeni dumplings and the rice-crispy dessert, chak-chak.

EXPANDING TRADITIONAL MARKETS

PARADISE Who can resist the picture-perfect beauty of the Seychelles? As the island destination broadens its endless blue tourism horizons and embraces inclusivity, more and more travellers are ticking it off their to-do list. Emily Millett writes

While new initiatives are continuously being implemented in the Seychelles in a bid to stay up-to-date with the needs and wants of the contemporary traveller, the industry is also simultaneously staying true to its traditional market segments, including the fastest growing tourism sector worldwide – the cruise industry. Rising exponentially year-on-year, the cruise sector is set to see further growth in 2018, with German cruise line, Aida, set to join the line-up of frequent callers, such as Costa and MSC cruises.
