WHERE TO GET TICKETS Tickets are available at venues at the time of screenings and in advance at the box office. Tickets at MovieTowne and the Little Carib Theatre are $25. Screenings at all other venues are free.
This year the ttff presents over 120 feature-length and short films — narrative, documentary and experimental — screening at venues across both islands. The varied and exciting line-up comprises more local films that ever before, as well as films from and about the Caribbean and its diaspora, Latin American countries in the Caribbean Basin, Brazil, India and countries in Africa. There will also be a special focus on the cinema of Canada. Many films will have their world premiere at the ttff/12, and many others are recent, award-winning selections from some of the most prestigious film festivals around the globe. As in previous years, the festival will be hosting several initiatives, aimed at helping the development of the local film industry and fostering an appreciation for independent world cinema in Trinidad and Tobago. These initiatives include workshops, filmmakers’ discussion panels and networking events, and presentations addressing the financing, marketing and distribution of Caribbean films.

Since 1996 the European diplomatic missions in Trinidad and Tobago have been hosting an annual showcase of films, the European Film Festival (EFF). This is the second year the ttff is joining forces with the EFF, with a number of films at the ttff/12 bring presented in association with various missions. Also, for the first time, the ttff is assisting in the execution of the EFF, which takes place from 03 to

Films from the European countries with diplomatic missions in T+T — France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom — will be screened. THE TTFF is this year paying tribute to Trinidad-born filmmaker Horace Ové, in recognition of his groundbreaking body of work. Born in 1939, Ové migrated to the United Kingdom in 1960, and in a career spanning over three decades, has made more than 20 films.
The ttff, with our presenting sponsor, Flow, offers subscribers a onemonth window to see selected films from the Festival once the ttff/12 comes to an end. Films range from local shorts and features to regional documentaries and narrative feature films, and 100% of the profits derived goes to the filmmakers. In 1970, Ové directed Reggae, the first independent documentary on Black music in Britain. In 1975 he achieved another first: his debut narrative feature, Pressure, was also the first by a Black-British filmmaker. Along with his film work, Ové has also directed several plays and garnered recognition as a photographer. He has received several major awards, including Commander of the Order of the British Empire. The Festival is pleased to be screening Reggae and Pressure in its tribute to Horace Ové. Please see page 13 for full synopses and screening dates and times.

Since the early days of cinema Trinidad and Tobago has been making its mark in the film industry, both at home and internationally.

The ttff, in association with bpTT, honoured a number of these trailblazing pioneers in August. In all 14 pioneers — filmmakers, actors and musicians — were recognised. The ceremony honouring the pioneers in film was one component of a larger initiative commemorating Trinidad and Tobago’s 50th anniversary of Independence.
Entitled Side by Side: Celebrating Independence Through Film, the programme kicked off in July with a filmmaking competition. This was followed by a series of screenings of classic local films and an exhibition covering the Trinidad and Tobago film industry from 1927 to 1999.

RBC Focus 2011
For the second year running the ttff, in association with RBC Royal Bank, is hosting the RBC Focus: Filmmakers’ Immersion. An intensive four-day development programme, Focus will give 10 selected emerging Caribbean filmmakers the opportunity to learn from professional film artists. Focus takes place from 25–28 September at the ttff offices in Belmont. This year the programme deals with the art

of documentary filmmaking, and will include group discussions and exercises on a range of documentary filmmaking techniques and strategies, opening participants to the creative possibilities of the art form. The facilitators for Focus are two internationally respected filmindustry professionals: JamaicanAmerican filmmaker and teacher Alrick Brown and documentary story consultant Fernanda Rossi,

born and raised in Buenos Aires and based in New York for the past 17 years. Brown is the writer and director of the awardwinning feature Kinyarwanda (2011) and producer of the acclaimed documentary Death of Two Sons (2006). Among the many documentaries Rossi has consulted on are the Academy Award-nominated The Garden (2009) and Recycled Life (2007).

THE TTFF is celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations and cultural and creative links between Trinidad and Tobago and Canada by featuring a selection of Canada-made films that are relevant to audiences and film industry professionals here. This focus on Canada also acknowledges the presence of a large Caribbean diasporic community in Canada, and is an expansion of the ttff’s heritage focus. Call 621.0709 to register. THE ART OF THE FILM REVIEW The existence of blogs and the rise in popularity of social media platforms have given a critical voice to filmgoers everywhere. This has made the need for quality film criticism greater than ever. In this workshop award-winning film critic Manoj Barpujari of India will make the case for cinema as an art, and the importance of the well-written film review. Using clips from a range of films, he will discuss the skills needed to write an intelligent, engaging review — whether it’s of a serious drama or the latest Hollywood blockbuster. NOTE: After the workshop, participants will be invited to write and submit a review of a film screening at the Festival. The writer with the best review as adjudged by a jury headed by Mr Barpujari will win a $5,000 cash prize courtesy the Caribbean Communications Network, and have their review published in the Trinidad Express. professional development. WorldView is a Commonwealth Broadcasting Association project aimed at supporting filmmakers who seek to bring the richness and diversity of the wider world to UK and international audiences. This session, for both emerging fiction and documentary filmmakers, gives an overview of a new Tribeca Film Institute / WorldView partnership, which aims to support Caribbean filmmakers in the development of their projects. Filmmakers will be taken through the grant application process, and shown examples of successful, previously funded projects. Other international sources where filmmakers can seek funding will also be highlighted. 12.45pm BREAK / LUNCH 1.30pm GUERRILLA FILMMAKING WITH NEW CARIBBEAN CINEMA Based in Jamaica, New Caribbean Cinema is a collective of young filmmakers dedicated to making great movies by any means necessary. In this presentation, Storm Saulter and other members of the group will discuss their new feature, Ring di Alarm!, and the tactics they used to make the film. 3.15pm THE ASSOCIATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF INDEPENDENT CINEMA IN GUADELOUPE (APCAG) + THE REGIONAL COUNCIL OF GUADELOUPE APCAG and the Regional Council of Guadeloupe will make a presentation on a Guadeloupe cinema fund and discuss the possibilities of partnerships between Caribbean islands, including in the area of film subtitling.

PITCH-BLACK HEIST 2011, UK English Narrative short / 13 minutes Liam and Michael are professional safecrackers who meet on a simple job to relieve an office safe of its contents. The catch is a light-activated alarm system, which impells the men to embark on a pitch-black heist.

Screenings of films from the ttff were first held at the St Augustine campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI) during the ttff/08. Four years later, the UWI component of the ttff is stronger than ever. There will be three days (21, 24 and 28 September) and three nights (22, 23 and 28 September) of screenings on the UWI campus, at the Institute of Critical Thinking, the Centre for Language Learning and the Students’ Activity Centre. The screenings on campus are hosted by UWI’s Film Programme,

where students, alumni and faculty have always contributed quality content to the ttff. This year more films by UWI students and alumni than ever before will be screened, including the feature-length drama Little Boy Blue, written and directed by Nicholas Attin. The feature-length documentary Stone Street, by Elspeth Kydd, a lecturer in the Film Programme, will also be shown. There will also be an evening of avant garde and experimental film works, as part of the ttff’s New Media programme, on
campus on 28 September. This is being held in association with the Postgraduate Programme in Cultural Studies. In addition to film screenings, workshops have also traditionally formed part of the ttff offering at UWI. This year is no different, with a workshop on the art of film criticism, facilitated by the awardwinning critic Manoj Barpujari, taking place on campus on 22 September.

THE JURIES Two juries of three members each will judge the ttff/12 jury awards. All jurors are film industry professionals, independent of the ttff. Before the festival, the jurors watch all films in competition. They rate the films via a points system, judging by various criteria. Having chosen their best films, the jurors meet during the ttff/12 to decide which films are to be awarded the various prizes. THE FEATURE FILMS JURY LESLIE FIELDS-CRUZ Leslie Fields-Cruz is the VP of Operations and Programming at the National Black Programming Consortium in the USA. She supervises the series AfroPop: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange, a showcase of documentaries about the African-American and African diaspora. She is on the board of Women Make Movies and a member of New York Women in Film and Television. LUIS NOTARIO Luis Notario is advisor to the president of the Cuban Institute of Cinematic Arts and Industry, ICAIC, and editor of Cubanow, a culture magazine with a focus on Cuban cinema. He was a coordinator of the Caribbean Travelling Film Showcase and is a member of its Board. He holds an MA in Caribbean Cultural Studies from the University of Havana. YAO RAMESAR Yao Ramesar is a Ghana-born, Caribbean filmmaker. His first feature film, Sistagod, was an official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival in 2006. He is filmmaker-in-residence at the Film Programme of the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, Trinidad.
THE SHORT FILMS/ CARIBBEAN FILM BY AN INTERNATIONAL FILMMAKER / BEST LOCAL ACTOR AND ACTRESS JURY MANOJ BARPUJARI Manoj Barpujari, a film critic and journalist, won the award for best film critic at the 59th National Film Awards of India in 2012. He is a member of Fipresci, the international federation of film critics, and co-editor of the first ever volume on the cinema of the Assamese region of India. GABRIELLE HEZEKIAH Gabrielle Hezekiah is a writer and scholar working on philosophy, visual art and theories of the moving image. She has a PhD in film and philosophy from the University of Toronto and is currently a lecturer in Cultural Studies at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, Trinidad. CHRISTIAN SIDA-VALENZUELA Originally from Durango, Mexico, Christian Sida-Valenzuela is the director of the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival. He is head programmer of the Latin American Film Week at the University of Victoria, Canada, and has served as a jury member at several international film festivals.

Now, 30 years after his tragic death from cancer at the age of 36, the story of Marley’s life is told in this monumental film. Beginning with his early days growing up in poverty in Jamaica and tracing his rise to international superstardom, the movie comprises rare archival footage, incredible live performances and revelatory interviews with members of his family and some of his closest friends. This is the definitive portrait of arguably the most influential musician of all time. About the Director Kevin Macdonald is a Scottish filmmaker. He has over a dozen documentary films to his credit, including One Day in September (1999), which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. In 2006 he directed his first narrative feature film, The Last King of Scotland, starring Forest Whitaker, and followed that up with State of Play (2009), featuring Russell Crowe. Marley is his most recent film. We are pleased to note that Kevin Macdonald will be present to introduce his film.

EVERY YEAR the fishing village of Cedros in south Trinidad observes the Shia Muslim ritual of Muharram, known locally as Hosay. Through a collage of beautiful images, revealing interviews and poetic narration, this film documents the history of Hosay in Cedros. In particular, it tells of the unity among the early Indian labourers who lived on Cedros’s coconut plantations and who transcended religion, caste and gender to come together to commemorate this sacred event.

THIS IS A groundbreaking documentary on the life of Dr Eric Williams, the first prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago. The film follows Williams’s career from professor to politician, right up to his disturbing death. Including interviews with family members and former colleagues, Inward Hunger shows Williams’s strengths and weaknesses, and also shows him as a man of great humour and devoted friendships, a man of loneliness and longing — in short, a fellow human being.
FORMED IN 1945, the Lara Brothers are Trinidad and Tobago’s oldest existing parang group. This loving film is a tribute to the band, and tells their story in their own words and music. In particular, the film follows the gregarious, extroverted Willy and his elder brother, the more reserved Tito. Tito’s death (his moving funeral is recorded here) underscores how endangered traditional parang has become, and what an important work La Gaita is.

Politically charged news and film footage is interspersed with the live performances by, among others, Desmond Dekker, The Pyramids, The Maytals and a pore-raising Millie Small chanting down Babylon with the song “Enoch Powell”.
AT 22 STONE STREET in Port of Spain stands a house, home to the Cherrie family for over 60 years. This absorbing film is an autobiographical portrait of the Cherrie family and its branches in the US, UK and Canada. Mixing home-movie footage, photographs, musical recordings and interviews with a lyrical first-person narration, Stone Street moves beyond a simple record of family life to become a layered exploration of identity, history, race, place and belonging.

THIS EMOTIONALLY charged documentary tells the story of three young women living and working in the Chureca, a landfill on the banks of Lake Managua in Nicaragua. Dominga is a glue addict with Aids; Fabiola is being enticed by evangelical Christians to leave her family and Maryuri is at risk of losing the child she is expecting. IN THE 1950s in Salvador, Bahia, a motley gang of abandoned street urchins survives by committing petty thefts and sophisticated mansion robberies. But when the orphaned Dora joins their ranks, the camaraderie of this boys-only outfit is threatened. CHOCÓ LIVES with her abusive, unemployed husband, Everlidés, and their two children, Candelaria and Jeffrey. When she loses her job at a gold mine, Chocó is desperate to find another, if only so she can afford a cake for Candelaria’s birthday. The village shopkeeper, meanwhile, is willing to let Chocó have the cake — for a price. A bold act of filmmaking with a jaw-dropping finale, Chocó is also an incisive portrait of the modern Afro-Colombian reality.

IN THE BEAUTIFULLY photographed Corta (Cut), agricultural labourers in southwest Colombia harvest a field of sugarcane using cutlasses. The hypnotic tempo and rhythm of their handiwork — a formidable but rapidly disappearing skill — has a meditative effect, as the men sharpen their blades and chop, chop, chop. When they’re finished, enormous trucks drive back and forth and the countryside is set on fire. This is contemplative cinema at its most potent, with undeniable historical undertones.
THE AWFUL LEGACY of colonialism pervades this clinical, unflinching and at times shocking portrait of Curaçao, formerly a territory of the Netherlands. This is a place of apartheid-recalling separation, where wealthy white expatriates live and play in luxury, while locals work as servants or low-level employees for Dutchowned companies. Slavery-era texts narrated over contemporary images of the island provocatively suggest the unstated: the past, in a new form, is very much alive here.

Gradually he enters the nascent independence movement and, not yet 18, is arrested for sedition. Respectful, yet not worshipful, this is a portrait of the revolutionary as a young man, and a stirring drama besides.

Enter five young therapists from Texas eager to help. At first their methods fail. Over time, however, they build one-on-one relationships with the children, and hope, however fragile, appears. This is an inspiring film about people dedicated to making a difference, and the children whose lives they transform.
JUAN IS A survivor. For decades he has ridden the waves of Cuba’s ups and downs, remaining resilient and refusing to leave the island. So, when a horde of zombies threatens to overrun Havana, he gets creative, and along with a rag-tag crew, starts up a zombie destruction service. Equal parts bloody horror-fest and cheeky political satire, Juan of the Dead is a gory, funny and wildly entertaining Cuban take on the classic zombie film.

She finds him in a nearby town, living in an old country house in the middle of a neglected banana plantation. Amidst the peculiarities and superstitions of the Dominican countryside, father and daughter will have to face the ghosts of the past that haunt them both.

Using the rural landscape to breathtaking effect, this poetic, contemplative film tells the valiant story of the final commander of the Christeros and his group of men, brave soldiers of Christ making a last stand against the Mexican army.
THEY SAY THAT in Cairu, a town in Salvador, Brazil, exists an extraordinary document: the manuscript of Fradique Mendes. Mendes, a 19th-century Portuguese poet, set down the reflections of his friend, Eca de Queiroz, a plantation owner who had freed his slaves. This compelling film goes in search of Mendes’s manuscript and retraces his journey. Along the way, light is shed on a number of issues, including the living conditions of Brazil’s Afro, indigenous and landless populations.

Enter Bachir Lazhar, an Algerian refugee, who must also help his charges cope with the trauma stemming from the tragedy. What the kids don’t know, however, is that Bachir also needs healing from the trauma in his own past. This thoughtful, eye-opening documentary takes an unprecedented look inside both worlds, brilliantly dramatising the tensions between old and new India, and the struggles of Indian women to determine their own destiny.
IN PREVIOUS adaptations of Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel, Wuthering Heights, the hero, Heathcliff, as per the author’s descriptions, was often portrayed as dark-skinned. This version, however, makes it plain: Heathcliff is Black, a former slave, making the intense relationship between himself and his foster sister, Cathy, even more transgressive. Marry that with ravishing, gut-wrenching imagery and the result is an intensely visceral film, a powerful alembic of one of the most beloved romantic works in literature.

IN JAMAICA, from the 1930s to the 70s, Chinese-owned groceries were located on street corners from Kingston to remote towns in every parish. This revealing documentary explores the relationship between the Chinese shopkeepers and their Jamaican customers, and the myriad ways in which this ethnic minority has contributed to Jamaican society.
CLARA, A light-skinned Black girl with kinky blonde hair and grey eyes, is incessantly teased by her dark-skinned peers. Then she ventures into the magical waters of the bioluminescent bay to change her skin colour and possibly herself.

THE EARTH IS dying, and a young girl named Sarah must help save it. Together with her guardian, Jonathan, she must restore the earth from the shadow that has stolen it.

GOUDOUGOUDOU is the name Haitians invented for the 2010 earthquake. For those who made it through, the notion of “being alive” was superseded by that of “being survivors”. WHEN THE Marriott hotel sought to expand one of their resorts on an ecologically sensitive beach in Carolina, Puerto Rico, a group of environmentalists protested the move. This inspiring film tells the story of their struggle to stop the expansion.
ANTON DE KOM (1898–1945) was a Surinamese anti-colonialist author. This film looks at his life, from his time in his native land to his exile in The Netherlands – where he wrote his classic tome – We Slaves of Suriname, to his arrest and death in Nazi Germany. The film also movingly recounts de Kom’s marriage and family life.
RED, AMBER, GREEN depicts the lives of three teenagers struggling to make ends meet as vehicle window washers and street vendors on the Kingston streets. Through their daily lives they learn from each other, and even find a way to help those less fortunate than themselves.
