Honorary Referee: Herb Sheaner

Herb Sheaner became track & field and cross country coach at Jesuit Dallas in 1955 following a competitive career at the University of Texas under legendary coach Clyde Littlefield. In 1957, Sheaner sought and Jesuit hosted the first TCIL-sanctioned state track & field championship meet. In 1958, he initiated the first high school cross country meet ever to be held in Dallas.

During Sheaner's 21-year tenure as head coach, Jesuit won six TCIL Track & Field Championships. In 1964, the Jesuit squad more than doubled the points of all other teams combined at the state championship.

Coach Sheaner inaugurated the Jesuit Relays in 1964. Upon his retirement in 1975, the meet, which has grown to become the largest high school-only track meet in the entire state of Texas, was renamed the Jesuit-Sheaner Relays.

The Texas Track & Field Coaches Association was started 12 years ago to provide a voice for the Track and Field coaches in Texas. In addition to opening lines of communication with the state’s governing bodies, including Texas Relays, the TTFCA promotes coaches, athletes and contributors to Texas Track & Field through its Athletes and Coaches of the Year accolades, Texas Track & Field Hall of Fame inductees and our own meet – the Meet of Champions.
