President's Welcome

We're happy to present the 14th annual Rise of the Spartans Tournament It is particularly exciting as it's one of our largest ever tournaments with 50 teams. Whether you’re from Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver or New York. I hope you enjoy the comradery, and the competition, and take full advantage of the opportunities to make new friends and reconnect with old ones.

This tournament represents many long hours from our volunteers especially Donald Littlewood,Tournament Coordinator, and Mohammed Salhia, Events Coordinator. We are very appreciative of their efforts and of those from the crew that was assembled to support them. Also, a big thank you to Cecil Clarke and the team of officials.

We are thrilled to be playing at the beautiful Markham Pan Am Centre for the 7th consecutive year and our wonderful downtown partner, Toronto Metropolitan University. The staff at both venues have been so supportive of our tournaments.

This passion for the sport and TSVL, is reflected in all we do, from running nearly 100 teams across our three Divisions, to special play and, development nights and, one-day tournaments. The Toronto Spartan Volleyball League continues to grow and is proud to be the largest LGBTQ2S single sport league in Canada.

On behalf of our hard working TSVL Executive, tournament volunteers, and sponsors, thank you for joining us this weekend. We look forward to hosting you and hope you take the opportunity to enjoy our great city and everything it has to offer. We wish you a safe and fun filled tournament that will create lasting memories and friendships.

Tournament Rules

The official rules of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) will apply, some exceptions apply:

1. Uniforms: Rules concerning uniforms will not apply, although teams are encouraged to indicate player numbers on their uniforms, to assist the officials.

2. Inappropriate clothing: Players wearing clothing deemed inappropriate or unsafe to play in will be asked to change or leave the facility by the Tournament Coordinator.

3. Unfair play and inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated. Physical or verbal abuse towards a(n) player, official, or volunteer will result in disqualification from play and immediate rejection from the facility. The Tournament Coordinator, whose decision will be final, resolves any situations not covered by these rules Only captains are permitted to address the Referee

4. Sanctions: Any specific player responsible for their team receiving two red or three yellow cards in total over the two days will be ejected from the tournament and asked to leave the facility

5. “No Chase” Rules: For safety, “no chase” rules will apply This means a player may not chase a ball into another court Once a ball crosses the line of another court it is out of play Good judgement must apply

6. Substitutions: Substitutions may be made two ways. Captains must declare their method of substitution before the game: 1) By rotation: enter at Position 1 or 4 OR 2) By position: unlimited between the same players. Substitutions are not allowed in the last minute of play during timed sets in the round robin.

7. Officiating: Ontario Volleyball Association Certified Referees will officiate on both days. Teams scheduled to assist with officiating must arrive on time and provide a 2nd referee, two linespeople, two scorekeepers and one ball retriever. Exceptions will apply in RISE '22. Occasionally teams will have to split up to ref on two courts. In these cases, NO 2nd referee (down ref) will be needed.

8 Ghost Rule: A team is permitted to play with less than 6 players to a minimum of 4, provided the ghost rule is in effect The team that is short a player must designate a spot(s) in their lineup for the ghost player(s) This spot would be the space the missing player would play if they were present When the ghost player rotates to the serving position (position 1), the team will automatically lose their serve and a point will be awarded to the other team. Players arriving late may automatically take over the ghost player’s position at any time during the game with the Referee’s approval

9. Time-outs: Teams are permitted one 30 second time out per set. Timeouts may NOT be taken in the last minute of play during timed sets in the round robin.

10. Substitutions: Unlimited substitutions apply in all divisions.

11. Rotation: Recreational teams may use the recreational rotation. Inform the First Official before the set begins

12. Warm ups: Teams are expected to warm up outside of the courts and will be permitted 2 minutes of ball control Longer warm ups may be allowed before the first rounds only If a previous game finishes early, the following teams may begin warming up

Tournament Rules cont'd

13. Step in on Serve: One foot step in on serve is allowed on all courts in both venues Players must begin behind the line

14. Ceiling Touch: There are no ceiling touches allowed on any courts.

15. Late Penalties/Defaults: Playing Teams Pool Play

If a playing team is not present when the 1st official calls the captains for the coin toss, the missing team will be given five[5] minutes to start the set and if they arrive within the 5 min will automatically begin the set with a 5 point disadvantage (i.e. late by 1 5 min). After five [5} minutes the set will be considered a default. Teams penalized with a default will earn 0 points, while the winning team will earn 25 points.

Playing Teams Playoffs Day

If a team is not present when the 1st official calls the captains for the coin toss, the team will be given five [5] minutes to start the first set following the coin toss, after which time the first set will be considered a default Teams are then given an additional ten [10] minutes to commence the second set, after which time the match will be considered a default

Refereeing Teams Both Days

If a team scheduled to referee is not available with an appropriate contingent of players [5] when the teams or OVA Official is ready to start the set, the team that is late will begin their next set they play with a 5 point disadvantage.

14. Roster Eligibility: All rosters are frozen as of Friday, November 25 at 9:00pm. In order to play matches on Sunday, a player must have played one rally during pool play on Saturday. Captains must inform the Tournament Coordinator if this will be necessary. Eligibility will ultimately be at the discretion of the Tournament Coordinator.

Important Information

Respect & Inclusivity

TSVL is thrilled to secure the facilities at Markham Pan Am Centre (MPAC) and Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). It is the captain’s responsibility to ensure all players and their guests know they are expected to be respectful of the facilities and employees. That same respect and the inclusive atmosphere our tournament aspires to create should also be shown to all players and officials on or off the court. Any inappropriate behaviour will be addressed by the Tournament Coordinator and may include expulsion from the Facility.

Staying on Schedule

The schedule is always tight and is a guideline Round Robin will be timed sets because there are cross court playing and reffing responsibilities The TC will announce the start of play/1 min remaining and sound an airhorn when play must end If there is a point in play, complete the point If the set is tied play one more point Playoffs will have the continuous play policy in effect If a match finishes early, the next set will begin immediately All teams and Captains are responsible for ensuring your team is arriving at the court to play or ref on time (ie minimum 5 min early) See Tournament Rules for late penalties
