Greetings TSU Alumni, Family and Friends,
With the fall semester in full swing, I am reminded of the incredible role our alumni and friends play in shaping the future of Tennessee State University. Every student walking into a classroom this semester is here because someone believed in their potential and many of you have been that someone.
The TSU Foundation exists to ensure that financial barriers never stand in the way of a student’s dreams. Scholarships, academic programs and campus improvements all depend on the generosity of those who came before Your gift no matter the size has the power to open doors, change lives and keep the legacy of TSU strong for generations to come.
As we embrace this season of growth and possibility, I invite you to join us in investing in our students. Together, we can ensure that the excellence of Tennessee State University continues to shine even brighter.
Warm regards,
Valerie R. Love Chair, Tennessee State University Foundation Board of Directors

Honoring a Legacy of Giving, Empowering a Future of Possibility
Thisyear,theTennesseeStateUniversityFoundationcelebrates55yearsoftransforminglives.Establishedin1970, the Foundation has stood as the official charitable organization for Tennessee State University quietly but powerfullyfuelingscholarships, programsandinitiativesthatshapethefutureofourstudents.
What began as a modest organization with a mission to support TSU’s literary, scientific, educational, and scholarship goals has grown into a dynamic, independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit managed by a board of alumni, businessandcommunityleadersdeeplycommittedtotheUniversity’svision.Formorethanfivedecades, multiple leadershaveservedwithoutcompensation, givingtheirtime, talent, andexpertisetoensureTSUremainsabeacon ofhopeandopportunity.

Over the past two years alone, the Foundation has distributed more than 2,500 scholarships totaling over $9 million, givingstudentsopportunitiestothrivebothinsideandoutsidetheclassroom.Thesescholarshipsaremore thanfinancialsupport theyarelife-changinginvestmentsinthenextgenerationofleaders,educators andinnovators.

But the Foundation’s support extends beyond named scholarships In a recent and powerful example of emergency assistance, TSU allocated $251,700 in Foundation funds to help 127 students avoid being purged from the University These were not traditional scholarship recipients they were students at risk of losing their academic standing due to outstanding balances. The Foundation stepped in swiftly, demonstrating that its mission is not only to recognize achievement, but to protect access and preserve opportunity
This type of responsive giving reflects the heart of the Foundation’s work: making sure that no Tiger is left behind due to financial hardship.
Events like the Land of Golden Sunshine Scholar and Donor Conference have also created meaningful spaces where students personally thank donors and donors witness firsthand the difference their generosity makes. Receptions in Washington, D.C., Memphis, and Nashville have deepened these connections, welcoming new President’s Society members and expanding the Foundation’s network of alumni and friends who fuel TSU’s growth.
Celebrating Our Donors, Honoring Our Legacy
The Foundation’s growth, now at $120 million, is marked by a 12% increase in assets under management in the last fiscal year and is a testament to the generosity of our donors and the stewardship of our board. This 55th anniversary is not just about looking back; it’s about recognizing the individuals and organizations whose support has made TSU stronger and more resilient, even in challenging times
The President’s Society and Legacy Luncheon is more than a ceremonial event. It is a chance to honor our most dedicated supporters, reflect on the transformative power of giving, and look ahead to the next 55 years of impact, innovation, and Tiger pride
Join the Celebration
Seating will be limited, guests are required to register and receive a letter in the mail, or an email from the Foundation stating eligibility to attend Whether you are a longtime supporter or considering your first gift, this anniversary year is an invitation to become part of a legacy that changes lives. Her journey from Memphis to Nashville is about more than books it’s about building a life that matters.
For Tennessee State University sophomore Kavia Buckner, receiving a TSU Foundation Scholarship was more than financial assistance It confirmed that her hard work and dedication are paving the way toward a meaningful future
Kavia is a Memphis native majoring in early childhood education She chose TSU because of its strong programs and the support of her brother, who graduated in 2022 “TSU felt like the perfect fit,” she said “Having my brother’s experience gave me the confidence that I had made the right choice ”
One of her favorite experiences so far has been serving as a manager for the TSU softball team. “Being welcomed as part of the team has been such a meaningful part of my college journey,” she said “It has given me a sense of belonging and helped me grow as a leader.”
Kavia admits that stepping into new opportunities was not always easy. “One of my biggest challenges has been learning to put myself out there,” she said. “I realized that I am no longer a kid. I have to take initiative, step outside my comfort zone and broaden my horizons. In my field it is important to speak up, advocate for myself and look for opportunities.” She credits this growth with helping her build confidence and prepare for success in school and in her future career

I am so grateful to be part of the TSU family and excited about where this journey will lead me.

“It showed me that my efforts matter,” she said “I used to think my hard work would not be recognized, but receiving this scholarship helped me realize I am capable of more than I imagined.”
She is inspired by the generosity of the donors who make these scholarships possible. “Their support motivates me to keep working hard and never give up,” she said. “Before this award, I did not think I had much of a chance. Being selected reminded me that there is always an opportunity if you put in the effort.”

This year’s Homecoming embraces the theme, “100 Years with 98 Degrees of Excellence,” honoring Tennessee State University’s rich history and the journey toward its centennial milestone while highlighting decades of academic and cultural achievement.
The Homecoming tradition began in 1927 when Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School hosted its inaugural clash against longtime rival Fisk University That historic event was more than a football game; it celebrated Black excellence and the resilience of a community striving for higher education and a brighter future
Nearly a century later, Homecoming continues to unite alumni, students, faculty, and the broader community in vibrant celebration From electrifying parades and spirited tailgates to thrilling football games and lively concerts, the week is a reflection of TSU pride and the enduring Tiger spirit
The TSU Foundation recognizes that this legacy is made possible by those who give back. Generous gifts, whether through scholarships, the President’s Society, or planned giving, ensure that future generations of Tigers have the opportunity to thrive, excel, and carry forward the tradition of excellence. Each contribution strengthens the university’s foundation and helps inspire students to reach their fullest potential.
As Homecoming brings together generations of Tigers, it is also a moment to reflect on the power of philanthropy and the lasting impact of giving. The traditions celebrated this week remind us that every achievement, every milestone, and every student success story is built on the support and generosity of the TSU community.

As we reflect on the past year of growth, generosity and impact, the Tennessee State University Foundation is proud to share a strong financial outlook for the year ahead. Through the support of alumni, corporate partners and friends of the University, we are well-positioned to reach new fundraising milestones that will continue transforming the lives of our students.
In the year ahead, the Foundation anticipates continued growth in scholarship giving, ensuring more students have access to the support they need to thrive. Our endowment remains steady, with investment returns that allow us to sustain longterm commitments. We are also seeing increased interest from corporate partners and community organizations who believe in TSU’s mission of excellence and opportunity.
Operationally, the Foundation remains focused on efficiency, ensuring that the vast majority of resources go directly toward programs, scholarships and initiatives that matter most. With our emphasis on transparency, stewardship and planning for the future, TSU is positioned to expand student access, strengthen academic excellence and deepen community impact.
This progress would not be possible without the generosity of our donors. Your commitment is the reason TSU continues to flourish. As we look to the future, we invite you to take your giving to the next level. By increasing your support, you can directly impact more students, open doors to new opportunities, and strengthen the legacy of excellence that defines Tennessee State University
