ur western suburbs of Chicago cover more than 85 square miles of Cook County and nearly 70,000 people. The area lies near the Des Plaines River and Salt Creek, and continues to the I&M Canal. Other surrounding communities partner with the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry area, such as Brookfield, Justice, Burr Ridge, Hinsdale, Summit and Westchester. Tourist and commuter travel is easily facilitated by Interstates 290, 55, 355 and the 294 Tri-State Tollway. We are positioned about 30 minutes from either O’Hare or Midway airports and 30 minutes from downtown Chicago. ountryside, “Chicago’s Western Gateway,” like all the communities that make up the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, is close to most everything that will add to your vacation or leisure time experiences. Route 66 runs right through the city. Trains are but minutes away and highway access to I-55 or I-294 starts and ends in Countryside. In this community, there are truly great hotels and many automotive and motorcycle dealers. Illinois Harley Davidson and BMW Motorcycles are recent additions. Motorcycles are available for rent through Eagle Rider at both locations. You can rent for a day or for the entire Route 66 cross-country adventure. he Village of Hodgkins was incorporated in 1896. Our village rests on the National Heritage Corridor, which marks the original path of Father Marquette and Louis Joliet. From a small residential community, we have developed as a central hub for residential, commercial/ industrial and retail business. Bordered by the Des Plaines River on our East side and the Historic Route 66 on our North. We are home to about 2,000 residents and a combination of Retail and commercial business’s. ich with historic heritage, green spaces and open residential settings, the Village of Indian Head Park is a predominantly residential community located at the convergence of I- 55 (Stevenson) and I-294 (Tri-State). Located conveniently to downtown, airports and shopping, with excellent schools and municipal services our residents enjoy easy access to almost any destination. The Village was named and incorporated appropriately as the Village of Indian Head Park in 1959. Its origins trace back to the Potawatomie Indians and as part of a stagecoach route that ran from Chicago to Ottawa at the Illinois River. The residence of Robert Vial, one of the first settlers to this area, was a strategic location along this route where many travelers stopped while they switched horses, including Potawatomi Chief Shabbona, an important liaison between the settlers and Native Americans. Later it was the site of the area Post Office and first Cook County Democratic convention in 1836. In 1843, the Vial family started the first Congregation Church of Lyonsville in a schoolhouse on Joliet Road across from its current location. In 1858 the building that is now the Lyonsville Congregational Church was dedicated. More recent history included the location of several 18-hole golf courses with rolling hills and trees that promoted an early focus on open green spaces and large residential lots. The original development of what is now Indian Head Park began in 1946 with the development of 20 lots west of Wolf Road by developer Norman Higby. Nineteen families are credited with being the original owners in Higby’s development. The original “Old Town” was developed starting in the 1950s, followed by the development of the initial condo and townhome developments in the 1970s and 80s of Acacia, Wilshire Green, Flagg Creek and Indian Ridge, and newer developments in the 1990s including Ashbrook, Indian Wood Townhomes, Chestnut on the Green and others. With a population of just under 4,000, Indian Head Park is predominantly a residential community that includes service, retail, and commercial areas. The area around Joliet Road serves as our retail corridor, with many options for eating, shopping, and wellness with several retailers specializing in hair, beauty, and spa services. Wolf’s Head Inn and Willow Hill Restaurant are two favorite destinations for our residents for friendly
conversation and great food. Our commercial section is mostly south of Joliet Road and borders the Tri-State Tollway. Our residents have excellent public school districts serving our Community with high achieving academic track records and strong parental and community involvement – K-8 students just north of Joliet Road attend Highlands School (District 106), while K-8 students just south of Tecumseh Road attend Pleasantdale School (District 107). Our young adults have access to the highly-rated Lyons Township High School (District 204), and there are also parochial options convenient to our location for both elementary, middle and high school. Residents of Indian Head Park are offered municipal public works services including snow removal and water (some residents are served by Highlands Sanitary District), and a Village Police Department that provides
public safety services. The Pleasantview Fire Protection District serves our community for paramedic and fire emergencies, with station locations one just to our north on Plainfield Road and another south on Wolf Road. Indian Head Park has several public parks with playgrounds, and a historic Community Center - Blackhawk Park, Sacajawea Park, and the Heritage Center. Additionally, part of our Village is served by the Pleasantdale Park District, which provides recreational programs for all ages and access to the Flagg Creek Golf course. Indian Head Park strives to maintain an atmosphere of natural beauty balanced with neighborly caring and community involvement. With large lots, a designated “Tree City”, and an emphasis on green space, it is still “the best kept secret in Chicago” and a great place to live, work and play!e

ocated approximately 14 miles west of Chicago, in Cook County, the Village occupies a land area of approximately 2.5 square miles and has an estimated population of 15,600. Homes within the Village are well-preserved and maintain their architectural and historic significance through sensitive restoration. The business community is an active participant in enhancing
the vibrancy of the downtown area by maintaining attractive storefronts and by sponsoring various annual community events such as the Pet Parade, Endless Summer, the Christmas Walk, and a fine arts festival. These events continue to attract thousands of people from the Village and surrounding communities to downtown La Grange. The success of La Grange is the result of more than just paved streets, transportation advances, or even farsighted leadership. The Village is an outstanding community because of the residents who care about their town and take active roles in helping it to grow as a quality Village. The Village of La Grange’s strategic location has the advantage of being easily accessible from every direction. Four State highways penetrate and cross its boundaries on two major routes: Route 12, 20, and 45 (La Grange/Mannheim Road) and Route 34 (Ogden Avenue). Public transportation is provided by the Burlington Northern Commuter Rail System, which has approximately 5,000 boardings daily from the La Grange Road Train station and the Stone Avenue Station. Amtrak and PACE bus service also serve the area. Rail freight service is provided by the Indiana Harbor Belt and the Burlington Northern / Santa Fe Railway.e

he Village of La Grange Park is an affluent bedroom community, known for its historic homes and tree lined streets. With easy access to I-290, I-294, I-55 and the nearby Metra commuter rail station, residents have the entire Chicago metro area at their fingertips. The community offers a diverse range of housing options from $100,000 condominiums to $1 million dollar homes, including three senior living facilities. Recognized by Forbes as one of the most stable housing markets in the country, in recent years the Village has seen a record
amount of reinvestment in the community through home additions, renovations and new home construction. The Village has also experienced an influx of new residents. Young families are drawn to the awardwinning public and private schools that serve the community, including Lyons Township High School, Riverside-Brookfield High School and Nazareth Academy. The Village also offers ample recreational opportunities including over 24 acres of parkland, multiple Cook County Forest Preserves and the beautiful Salt Creek Bike Trail.
Community events such as the annual Jazz and Blues Fest, the Concert Under the Stars series and National Night Out draw large crowds, while weekend block parties and the local swimming pool bring neighbors together. Residents can also take advantage of a variety of shopping and service amenities, from national brands to locally owned antique shops. cCook is known as “The Small Town of Big Dreams.” The Village is named after John J. McCook, a director of the Santa Fe Railroad and an American Civil War Officer. Located off Historic Route 66, the village provides many activities for its small residential community. It is home to a beautiful library with a recent two-story addition. The Park District provides various programs for adults and children throughout the year and the beautiful outdoor park and baseball field are put to good use. The recent installation of a walking path also adds another option for physical activity. Several good restaurants are also located in the village. Another option for entertainment is “The MAX” (McCook Athletic & Exposition Center). Owned by the Village, the MAX which opened in 2006, is a 150,000-squarefoot multi-purpose facility designed to combine the benefits of a full-sized outdoor field with the shelter of a 40-foot high clear-span roof – the first of its kind in Chicago. With such size, comes versatility. The MAX incorporates 80,000 square feet of turf alongside 25,000 square feet of hard court space broken down into two full-sized main basketball courts, a full-sized private wood court gymnasium, and an elevated private deck court. The facility also houses three locker rooms and a 6,000 square foot

restaurant space. Recently celebrating its first anniversary is the “PUB @ The MAX,” a full-service sports restaurant & bar offering an extensive menu sure to satisfy every appetite. The MAX also hosts birthday parties and seasonal camps. Field, court and bounce house parties are available. Winter, Spring and Summer Break Camps are the biggest, most popular that the MAX offers. However, there are mini camps for holidays such as Thanksgiving Break and Columbus Day. Camps are for children ages 4-12 and generally run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The MAX can also be utilized for Corporate Outings, Expositions, Private Party/Events or Open Gym. The McCook Industrial Park is home to many companies including Michael Lewis Company and Burke Beverage as well as Lawson Products. Our newest additions to our Business Parks are Freeman Expositions located at 47th and Riverside Drive and Golden State Foods located at 47th and Vernon Avenue. McCook continues to expand its diverse collection of Industrial Partners. There are two additional Spec Buildings currently under construction at the corner of 47th Street and 1st Avenue (Hinsdale Avenue) that will welcome additional businesses into our town. The Village has recently unveiled the redesign and painting of our one-million-gallon
Waterspheroid Elevated Tank. The Village of McCook logo faces the north and south while the MAX logo faces the east and west. It was a big undertaking, but the results are well worth it. It is a great representation of our community.e

owntown Western Springs will be an economically sustainable center of community life, offering a charming and vibrant destination to meet daily and destination shopping and dining needs. The downtown will remain sensitive to the historic scale and character of Western Springs, while offering expanded opportunities to shop, live, work and play in a family friendly environment. The Village of Western Springs, a non-homerule community, was incorporated in 1886 and is approximately 16 miles west of the City of Chicago in Cook County. Western Springs is a small, stable, quiet community measuring 2.75 square miles bisected by the Burlington Northern Railroad. The Village Tower, which is located in the middle of town, is the symbol of Western Springs. It was built in 1892 and has served the Village in a variety of ways over the years. The Village is surrounded on three sides by incorporated municipalities and the fourth side is Bemis Woods, a Cook County Forest Preserve. In 2005 the Village annexed the last undeveloped parcel, Timber Trails, in adjacent unincorporated Cook County. It is a residential community with a small commercial district which serves the basic needs of the residents. The Village prides itself in and derives its charm from the quality and diversity of its homes. Distinctive single family housing, superior schools, and access to Chicago through the Burlington Northern rail line have established the Village as a stable, family-friendly community. The Village recognizes that its homes represent its greatest asset and has had a watchful eye on the market downturns that have impacted the economy since 2008, as property taxes are the single largest revenue source that supports general operations. Fortunately, the Village has not experienced the steep peaks and valleys of the recent housing market. The median home price rose approximately 10.4 percent in 2013, according to Zillow. There were 39 teardowns in 2014, compared to 26 in 2013. The Timber Trails subdivision continued to show growth with the addition of several new singlefamily and townhouse units. Available inventory sold briskly throughout the year and phase two is now ready for construction.
There are two elementary school districts and one high school district providing public education to Village residents. In addition, there is one private grade school.
Civic Establishments • The Village Club, located at the northeast corner of Chestnut Street and Lawn Avenue, provides social gatherings and sports events and is still an active social club. • The Theatre of Western Springs was founded in 1929 and in 1946 the Children’s Theatre of Western Springs was founded. Producing 7 adult productions, 4 student productions and a holiday show each year, this theatre is a place where a community of all ages comes together to train for, explore and demonstrate the art of live theater. The Theatre of Western Springs is internationally recognized for its artistic excellence and its position of respect in Chicago’s creative community. • Thomas Ford Memorial Library opened in 1932.
• The Grand Avenue Community Center (Chestnut and Grand) is the oldest stone public building still standing in Western Springs. The community center is home to the Senior Center, day care center and recreational activities. • The Western Springs Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the village’s rich history with past, present, and future residents. The Society operates a free museum in the village’s historic water tower.e

illage of Willow Springs offers a natural blend of forested land and spacious real estate, along with the convenience of several transportation options and shopping along Archer Avenue. Businesses, similar to the generations of residents, have put down long-term roots in this thriving community of 5,500 set at the crossroads of I-294, I-55, LaGrange Road and Archer Avenue. The Village remains a destination for small shops and fine dining, highlighted by well-known restaurant varieties including Greco’s, The Irish Legend, My Way Café, and Mo’s Willow Pub & Grub. In addition, the Village is graced by the historic Willowbrook Ballroom, one of only a handful of officially designated ballrooms in the United States. Old Willow Shopping Center continues to attract crowds to its Archer Avenue location where the castle-like Royalty West Banquet Hall provides a unique medieval setting. The Center draws visitors from around Chicagoland to the eclectic Ashbary Coffeehouse, which features live entertainment, Blue 22 Vapor, Dead Serious Tattoo, and Tropical Sno, a destination for many for a cool summer treat.

Partnering to Enhance Community Well-Being
Community Concern Spotlight: When it comes to raising mental health awareness, there’s strength in numbers.
T
hat’s the impetus behind the development and west suburban roll out of a special nationally recognized program designed to help trained individuals throughout the community spot the signs of mental illness and take steps to help. In cooperation with the Rotary Club of LaGrange, DuPage Community Foundation, Illinois Children’s Health Foundation, and the Lyons and Proviso Townships Mental Health Commissions, the Community Memorial Foundation in 2014 began offering an 8-hour Mental Health First Aid course led by trained community members, each with 40 hours of instruction in common mental health challenges. “It’s surprising for many to learn how common mental illness is and how many friends, family members and neighbors may face a mental health challenge in their lifetime,” says Cathy Kokontis, a licensed clinical social worker, therapist, and youth initiative coordinator at Nazareth Academy, who serves as one of 29 National Council on Behavioral Health trained community instructors for the Mental Health First Aid program. According to program sponsors, two versions of the course are offered. Adult Mental Health First Aid explores how to help an adult who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crises until appropriate professional help arrives. The training helps participants identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance abuse disorders. Youth Mental Health First Aid equips caring adults with the knowledge they need to spots signs of mental illness in young people and to help them get proper treatment. “Mental illness is more common than most people realize,” says Kokontis, who explains that Mental Health First Aid is help offered to a person experiencing a mental health crises and given until appropriate professional help is secured. The Youth Mental Health First Aid program is designed to teach neighbors, parents, teachers, and older peers how to help a youth or teen experiencing a mental health of substance abuse challenge or who is in crisis. The course discusses mental health challenges for youth,

reviews typical adolescent development, and provides guidance through action plans for crises and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance abuse, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders including AD/HD and eating disorders. Targeting community groups, church members and those on the front lines of community service, Kokontis says training programs are already in place for local police officers, government, library and park district workers, and staff at several parochial schools including Nazareth Academy, St. Cletus, Divine Infant, St. Francis Xavier and St. John of the Cross. “The goal is to raise awareness, make mental health first aid training available throughout the community, and help participants understand there is something we can all do to help,” explains Kokontis, who is among the first group of Mental Health First Aid instructors to complete training, representing a wide cross section of organizations including Pillars, Aging Care Connections, the Hinsdale Police department, Mujeres Latinas en Accion, Arab American Family Services, BEDS Plus Care., Inc., Narareth Academy, Robert Crown Center for Health Education, the LeaderShop, All Our Children’s Advocacy Center, Catholic Charities, NAMI Metro Suburban and NAMI DuPage. Designed to function like a traditional first aid class, it is hoped the program will help reduce the stigma of mental illness by encouraging recognition, awareness and the same need for treatment as manifested by physical illness and complaints. “As evidenced by this program, much can be accomplished through community partnership and the WSCCI is proud to be a regional partner in this initiative,” says Ken Grunke, West Suburban Chamber of Commerce & Industry executive director. According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), mental illness is believed to impact 20 percent of adults and children, nearly 57.7 million Americans, yet only one in five receive a diagnosis and treatment. Conditions like depression, anxiety, and eating disorders can lead to substance abuse, relationship issues, failure in schools, loss of employment, and even death. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in those between the ages of 10 and 24, and 90 percent of children and teens who commit suicide suffer from a mental illness.

rom books to technology, West Suburban residents have access to a plethora of resources and services at libraries including the LaGrange Park Public Library, Hodgkin’s Library, LaGrange Public Library and the Thomas Ford Memorial Library, Western Springs. Celebrating a historic 40th anniversary this year, the LaGrange Park Public Library has come a long way since 1975 when the Suburban Library System’s travelling bookmobile made several weekly stops within the Village. “Our library today is the single central connection for everyone in the village, serving as curator of the community’s base of knowledge and opportunities for enrichment,” says Lynn Elam, interim director. “Trustees, staff and volunteers are intentionally focused on delivering education and skills needed for high quality of life in the 21st century through reading, viewing, listening and learning.” In 1976, the first library was housed in a cozy 5,400-square-foot space in the basement of School District 102’s old Forest Road School. Throughout the 1980s, patrons fondly recall the children’s story hour and browsing among the select 4,600 book collection. A 1987 referendum provided funding for the current three-story, 21,000-square-foot library building which was completed and opened in November, 1989. With today’s circulation of 152,613 items and an additional eBook circulation of 6,973, the LaGrange Park Public Library has become an epicenter of resources with 76,883 books, 24,319 audio items, 3,509 audio downloadable titles, 6,467 videos and DVDs, 172 periodical subscriptions, 31 licensed databases and 22,820 eBook titles. j

The recently renovated first floor features comfortable seating and cozy lounge-style seating with built in power for computers and mobile devices. Roll-out of updated technology in December includes 26 new laptop computers which replace former desktop computers and bulky computer workstations. Made possible by a special $50,000 legislative grant, the computers run the latest versions of Microsoft Windows, the newest Microsoft Office Suites, and boast touchscreen capabilities. According to Gabe Oppenheim, IT director, this effectively doubles Internet and computing capabilities for the library’s 8,900 cardholders and visitors. Also new this spring is an upgraded new online catalog. After 10 years with the current catalog, LaGrange Park Public Library and 76 SWAN libraries will offer a new generation Enterprise catalog with access to downloadable media like eBooks and audiobooks and have the potential to search online reference sources. Patrons may search the library’s physical and digital materials with one click, and initiate eBook downloads from within the catalog.e
