History: See How Our Community Came To Be

located throughout the communities. The Vermilion Historical Society was established in 1975 with a mission to collect, preserve and communicate the history of Vermilion Parish. The organization has published two editions of the “History of Vermilion Parish, LA” and “Journeys into the Past – Abbeville, LA: The Early Years,” by Kenneth A. Dupuy. The Historical Society is also part of the Abbeville Cultural and Historical Alliance, which operates a museum at the Alliance Center featuring a collection of historic artifacts, documents and photographs pertaining to the parish.

Long before Vermilion Parish was established, several Native American tribes inhabited the area. The land remained virtually unsettled through the French colonial period in the state’s history, but began growing by the time the Spanish colonial period rolled around in the early 1760s. French Acadians, or Cajuns, arrived in the southern region of Louisiana following the Great Expulsion of 1760 – an event that led to the deportation of thousands of Acadians from their home in Nova Scotia. The Cajuns were drawn to this coastal area’s rich and fertile land, bountiful wildlife and open prairie that proved ideal for cattle grazing. The Spanish government awarded land grants to those willing to provide labor clearing land, building bridges and levees and maintaining roadways. Towns quickly began springing up, and in 1803, the U.S. acquired the territory of Louisiana with the Louisiana Purchase. By March 25, 1844, Vermilion Parish was created by the state legislature from the southern portion of Lafayette Parish. Abbeville, founded in 1843, was incorporated in March 1850 and earned designation as the seat of Justice for Vermilion Parish in March 1854. Today, nearly 50 percent of the 56,000-plus parish resident’s boast of Cajun ancestry, with its vibrant culture, internationally recognized cuisine and true Southern hospitality making this “The Most Cajun Place on Earth.” Vermilion Parish’s deep history can still be felt in the historic architecture of Downtown Abbeville and in the various museums

Superior Transportation: Air, Rail & Ground

Vermilion Parish is part of the six-parish Acadiana region of Louisiana, located in the south-central portion of the state. A mere 20 miles from Lafayette and 150 miles from New Orleans, the parish is easily accessible from Interstate 10 via LA Highways 26 and 13, U.S. Highway 90 and Interstate 49. For those traveling from Texas, the parish is accessible from LA Highway 82. Additionally, LA Highway 14 runs through the parish, offering a local route, as well as a direct link to U.S. 90, LA 26 and LA 13. The Abbeville Chris Crusta Memorial Airport is a general aviation facility owned and operated by the City of Abbeville, just three miles east of the city. The airport is convenient to Abbeville and Erath with access via Louisiana Highway 14 East. The airport has a new renovated and expanded fixed-wing terminal building, a rotorcraft terminal building, five conventional hangars, five T-hangar units and 44 tie-down spaces. The airfield provides service to its users with a single runway that is accessed by a parallel taxiway. The asphalt runway is 5,000 feet long by 75 feet wide. For the 12-month period ending May 28, 2019, the airport had 91,595 aircraft operations, an average of 250 per day consisting of 53% air taxi, 46% general aviation and 1% military. Corporate aviation, air cargo operations and commercial services are available at the Lafayette Regional Airport, which offers daily non-stop flights to destinations in Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Denver and Orlando. Travelers can also take advantage of Amtrak commuter rail service in nearby Lafayette. The station at 100 Lee Ave. is served by the Sunset Limited route, which runs between New Orleans and Los Angeles and makes more than 20 stops in between. Businesses use several rail lines that traverse the landscape of the parish, including the Acadiana Railway Company, Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railway, LA & Delta Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad. Plus, the parishâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s location on the Gulf of Mexico provides convenient options for water travel through the Port of Vermilion in Abbeville, the Twin Parish Port in Delcambre and the nearby Port of Iberia in New Iberia.

Right At Home: Residences For All Lifestyles Vermilion Parish is blessed with a wonderful climate, good people, good food, plentiful recreational amenities and wonderful opportunities for employment, so its housing market never slowed dramatically, even at the height of the recession, according to local Realtors. Recent layoffs in the oil and gas industry have caused nervousness, however, and resulted in about a 10 percent dip in home prices, said Kathy Dyson, owner/broker of Kathy Dyson Realty in Abbeville. “But I expect that to pass. Our market is pretty diverse and very stable. Nothing ever seems to hurt us that bad,” she said. James Noel, owner/broker of Sunrise Realty in Abbeville, agreed, pointing to new residential developments under construction in the northern part of the Parish. “Vermilion Parish isn’t hurt as badly by oil and gas layoffs as Lafayette, for instance, because the Parish has not been over-built,” Noel said. “Townhouses are very popular right now and there are some 1,300-square-foot patio homes being built that are selling out as fast as they can build them. We also had a 250-unit apartment complex built that now has a waiting list,” he said. The most popular type of homes, both new and resale, are traditional-

K style, raised Acadian homes with broad porches, gable roofs, overhanging eaves and outside staircases, Dyson noted. The second most popular style today, she said, is French Provincial. Both Acadian and French Provincial homes are available in both new and older neighborhoods, as well as in rural areas throughout Vermilion Parish. Abbeville, in particular, is very popular with students and faculty at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette because it is only a 15-minute drive from campus. Noel has also noticed numerous overseas tourists from France, Belgium and Canada who have enjoyed their stay in the parish and chosen to buy a home for retirement or vacations. “Our French heritage in this area appeals to them,” Noel said. “Over 50 percent of our local residents were born and raised in Vermilion Parish and can trace their families back for generations in the area,” Dyson said. “But the rest are transplants who have moved here for employment or retirement, attracted by our good food, great weather, beautiful scenery and many recreational and social opportunities like our festivals, concerts in the park and farmers markets. “The majority who move here for jobs come from the oilfields in Texas. Others come here from all over. We even have snowbirds from the north who come here in the winter and live in our area RV parks to escape the winters up north,” she added. “Potential home buyers who are older and have no school-age children are attracted to the towns within Vermilion Parish. Those with children gravitate toward the best school districts, which are often in the rural areas. Many of them also like the fact that they can get larger acreage without restrictions in the rural areas. About 10 percent want to have at least one horse. Many others want to raise chickens for the eggs,” Dyson said. Noel agreed. “In the rural areas people can have animals, sheds, mobile homes, whatever they want and many like that. Many also like the 10-acre mini-ranches. Waterfront property, of course, is in high demand, but very scarce, Noel said. Most of it is owned by the old families and few are selling. But the vast land tracts those families once owned are slowly disappearing nevertheless. Homes currently on the market in the parish range in size from 1,000 to 4,000 square feet. But the average home falls in the 2,000- to 2,500-square-foot range and sells for between $150,000 and $200,000, he said. The average half- to one-acre lot in Vermilion Parish sells for $25,000, unless it is on the river. A river lot of that size sells for approximately $75,000, Noel noted.

Louisiana is truly an oasis for nature enthusiasts, with its varying landscapes of coastal wetlands and prairies and abundance of native wildlife waiting to be discovered. The state is replete with state parks, national wildlife refuges and management areas, city and state preservation sites and a range of further well-maintained outdoor destinations. There is no better way to take in the Louisiana landscape than along America’s Wetland Birding Trail, a path that travels along the entirety of Louisiana’s Gulf Coast – from the Texas border to the Mississippi border. Visitors to the trail can catch a glimpse of the state’s coastal environments and assortment of birds and flora and fauna. The trail is divided into 12 distinct loops, with the Vermilion Loop running along the shores of Bayou Vermilion and into the heart of “Cajun Country.” Several sites spot the Vermilion Loop, including the Bancker Grotto, Palmetto Island State Park, the Mouton Cove Area and the Abbeville RV Park. a number of bird species. The addition of the White Lake Birding and Nature Trail at the end of Hwy. 91 south allows tourists to view native and migratory birds in their habitat. Be on the lookout for Vermilion Parish’s newest residents, Whooping Cranes. Once a nesting area for the almost extinct cranes, The White Lake Conservation Area is now home to over 13 non-migratory whooping cranes. Gueydan has become such a popular destination for birders and duck and goose hunters that the Secretary of State in Baton Rouge has dubbed it the “Duck Capital of America.” Just outside of Downtown Abbeville, the Abbeville RV Park is a retreat for campers and outdoor enthusiasts, with an array of natural elements and birds calling this area home. The park features 55 shaded sites complete with water and electric hookups, 50 campsites, a one-mile nature trail and a clubhouse. Located south of Abbeville and on the Vermilion River, Palmetto Island State Park offers a real south Louisiana outdoors experience. Overnight guests can stay in one of six vacation cabins that are nestled among the trees and foliage. For the RV campers, there are 96 campsites to choose from; 20 sites include an extra tent camping pad. The Visitor Center complex features a nature station, a water playground and bathhouse for overnight and day visitors. Several trails, located throughout the park, allow visitors to learn about the area’s native flora and fauna. A boat launch provides access to the river for fishing and boating, while canoers and kayakers can explore the interior lagoons for an up-close look at the native plant and animal life. Another way to enjoy the outdoors is by spending a day on the links. Just outside of Abbeville is Southern Oaks Country Club, a well-maintained golf course and driving range designed by Frank A. Godchaux. Opened in 1927, Southern Oaks is one of the oldest golf facilities in South Louisiana. This 18-hole course offers nearly 6,150 yards of play from the longest tees. The course features Bermuda grass greens and fairways, and offers a challenge to any player, from the novice to the experienced. Southern Oaks course and its amenities, which include a clubhouse, pro shop and pool have been around for almost a century.

Vermilion Parish is overflowing with culture, music, history and allaround Cajun flavor. Visit one of the many museums in the area, take in some local Cajun sounds and participate in one of the many exciting annual events of Vermilion Parish. The Acadian Museum in Erath is another fantastic historical site that celebrates Acadian heritage and the Cajun people that call Louisiana home. Visitors can also take a trip to Sam Guarino’s Blacksmith Shop Museum in Abbeville, where they can catch a glimpse into the life of a blacksmith in the early 1900s and the Sicilian culture. The Abbey Players invite patrons to enjoy three to four high-quality, mainstage theatrical productions each year, as well as a summertime children’s production. The theater is housed in the renovated Reaux Lumber Company building in Abbeville, which has been the troupe’s home since the early 1980s. Vermilion Parish’s location places it within a short drive to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the second largest university in the state. UL Lafayette’s fall 2019 enrollment surpassed 19,400 students. The university offers more than 80 undergraduate degree programs, 34 master’s degree disciplines, eight graduate certificate programs and 11 doctoral degree programs. Now in its second century, UL Lafayette bears little resemblance to its humble origins. Established in 1898 as Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute, its first graduating class in 1903 had 18 members. By comparison, the university conferred more than 3,330 degrees last year. What began as essentially a high school has developed into a major research university and economic engine. UL Lafayette is aligned with key industries in Louisiana, including digital media, life sciences, energy, coastal protection and water resources and tourism. UL Lafayette is known for exceptional programs in nursing, applied computer science, engineering, the humanities, environmental sciences, and architecture. In addition, the university:  Spent a record $124 million for research and development in 2018, placing it among the top 25 percent of universities nationwide in terms of R&D funding.  Is the only university in the world with the unforgettable athletics nickname of the Ragin’ Cajuns. Students don’t have to leave home to attain a high-quality college degree. Abbeville hosts South Louisiana Community College, an institution with a mission to provide current and relevant job training to Vermilion Parish Citizens. The college has a presence in nine parishes in Acadiana, including Vermilion Parish. Training can be of a short or long duration and result in a certificate, technical diploma, associate degree or industrybased certification. At the Gulf Area campus, students can choose from a number of majors including cosmetology, industrial/agricultural mechanics technology, medical assistant, practical nursing and welding. Students can also work toward an associate degree in general studies, accounting, business and business administration. All courses within the associate degree program are transferable to a four-year institution. The Gulf Area Campus also started an evening welding class and an evening CNA class. Additionally, the campus can accommodate requests from business and industry to provide customized training and offers high school students the opportunity to take dual enrollment courses, allowing students to earn college credit while in high school. The Gulf Area campus boasts a healthy placement rate and works with employers to ensure that students have the skills needed by industry and that students exit the training ready for immediate employment. Gulf Area campus instructors possess industry based certifications and provide instruction in a manner that fosters the acquisition of similar certifications by students. WorkKeys testing is available and can be used by employers to assess workplace literacy skills of potential employees. Gulf Area campus also houses the Vermilion Parish office of Acadiana Works and Adult Education. This state agency provides job placement assistance and referrals. The campus serves as a one-stop shop for all training and employment needs. South Louisiana Community College is a comprehensive community college that serves more than 10,000 students annually and operates campuses in Abbeville, Crowley, Franklin, Lafayette, New Iberia, Opelousas, St. Martinville, Morgan City and Ville Platte.

Vermilion Parish Library

The citizens of Vermilion Parish officially passed a millage that established the Abbeville-based Vermilion Parish Library in February 1942. Over the ensuing years, branches have opened in Kaplan, Gueydan, Maurice, Erath and Delcambre, and the bookmobile mobile library serves various destinations throughout the parish. The library system has experienced much growth in more than 77 years and today its collection contains more than 195,000 items including magazine and newspaper subscriptions. Patrons are able to download music to listen to and read e-books and digital magazines on their mobile devices from the library website (www.vermilionparishlibrary.com). Laptops are available for checkout at the Abbeville location to Vermilion Parish citizens provided by the State Library of Louisiana. In addition, all locations offer a wealth of audios, DVDs and playaways (books available for play on an MP3 player). Each location of the Vermilion Parish Library offers color copying and faxing services,

free internet, free Wi-Fi, wireless printing and access to a number of online databases. For groups who need a place to meet, the libraries in Abbeville, Kaplan and Erath offer the use of meeting rooms, which are accessible both during and after library hours. Aside from the facilities and amenities of the library, patrons of all ages take advantage of a calendar year of excellent programming, including summer reading programs, story hours, genealogy group, French table and other programs. The nonprofit Vermilion Library Foundation was founded in 2010 for the purpose of receiving and raising private funds for the Vermilion Parish Library System. The foundation is committed to enhancing and supporting library services throughout the parish. By encouraging private funding, the foundation is able to supplement public support of all branch libraries, as well as develop collections and services that make the libraries great.

all over Acadiana to work here in positions ranging from clerical to metal fabricating to transportation and crane operators. Some tenants maintain fleet at the port,” Campbell said. Those tenants engaged in oil and gas services are Grand Isle Shipyard Inc., Gulf Coast Marine Fabricators, Stallion Offshore Quarters and Tanner Services, LLC. The port is also the home of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Pelican and to Trelleborg which provides marine fenders and mooring bollards, engineering/design services, laboratory performance testing, heavy steel fabrication and naval systems. Marine-related businesses prosper in the parish, thanks to not only those fishing the Gulf, but also to the many fisheries that raise and sell crawfish, shrimp, alligators and pogy. Packaging those pogy bait fish for shipment to East Coast fishermen creates work for many Vermilion residents as does processing the tiny fish into fish oil supplements and animal feed additives at the Omega Protein Corporation processing plant in Abbeville. “Those aquaculture-related industries are huge and have a lot of future potential if the owners choose to ramp them up and capture a bigger share of the market,” Falgout said. Vermilion Parish also has firms which process and add value to locally-grown rice and sugarcane like the Planters Rice Mill and Steen’s Syrup Mill. These longstanding industries in Vermilion Parish continue to grow as they serve the oil and gas, agriculture and aquaculture industries. Nearly 40 percent of Vermilion Parish’s 783,000 acres is currently devoted to agriculture and aquaculture, bringing $300 million into the parish annually, said Andrew Granger, county agricultural agent for Vermilion Parish. Rice and cattle have been huge cash crops in the region for the past 50 years and sugarcane was added to the mix in the late 1980s. Soy beans and wheat are also raised by some. Vermilion Parish’s farms are mostly family-owned, and they are seasonal employers, Granger said. Extra labor is only brought in at planting and harvest times, in most cases. Rice farmers double as aquaculturists because they rotate between using their land to grow rice and to raise crawfish, giving the soil a chance to regenerate between rice crops. “The Vermilion Economic Development Alliance is focused on 

Touted as “The Most Cajun Place on Earth,” Vermilion Parish is a large and diverse coastal parish that boasts both farmland and wandering bayous, as well as the deep and navigable Vermilion River which leads to the Gulf of Mexico. Most of its 60,000 people are bilingual, speaking both Cajun French and English. Vermilion Parish’s residents and businesspeople make the most of their abundant natural resources by cultivating and attracting individuals and businesses that pull oil and gas from the earth, harvest creatures from the sea and the bayous, graze cattle on its lands and grow rice, sugarcane and soy beans in its fertile soil. Businesses that sell to and service these enterprises understandably gravitate to the parish, too. For instance, those who provide oilfield equipment and services abound in Vermilion Parish. Consequently, there are plenty of professional machinists, welders, pipe fitters, helicopter pilots and so forth, according to Anne Falgout of the new Vermilion Economic Development Alliance. Major Vermilion Parish employers who support the oil and gas industry in one way or another include Schlumberger Inc. in Maurice, Shaw Global Energy Services, Inc. in Delcambre and EcoServ in Abbeville. In addition to providing fixed wing pilot training, aircraft rental and a full range of ground services for airplanes of all types and sizes, Vector Aviation at the Abbeville Airport regularly provides fuel and services to 25 helicopters that operate daily, ferrying people, emergency parts and lightweight supplies like fresh produce to the oil and gas platforms. “This area has been very oilfield-driven for the past 50 years or so,” said Mike Mouton of Vector. “Some of those platforms are 150 miles out into the Gulf. It takes an hour to reach them by helicopter or 12 hours to reach them by boat. These helicopters provide a very important service and we make the owners’ and pilots’ lives easier.” The Port of Vermilion, a development of The Abbeville Harbor and Terminal District, is an industrial park on the Vermilion River that houses tenants that want the ability to do business by truck or by river. Many of those tenants also service the oil and gas industry by offering marine fabrication, construction, logistics services, environmental services, decommissioning services and marine contracting/transportation, while others service the marine industry, said Executive Director Jay Campbell. “We have 310-plus employees working at the Port of Vermilion who earn $21million-plus in salaries so we have a huge impact on our district, Abbeville, the Parish and the entire state. People come from

within the region including, manufacturing, mining/oil and gas, construction and information technology. Manufacturers such as Omega Protein ships its products worldwide, bringing in new funds to Vermilion Parish,” LaGrange said. Occupations with the highest demand in the region are positions that require more than a high school diploma but less than a bachelor’s degree. Area schools have been adept at developing programs to meet the needs of local businesses. South Louisiana Community College’s Gulf Area Campus in Abbeville, for instance, offers a program in industrial agriculture mechanics technology that has a 100 percent placement rate. Industry in the area also benefits from having the state’s second largest university in nearby Lafayette. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette offers more than 120 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs.

To do this we have initiated a business visitation program,” Falgout said. “We are also planning to educate local residents about how to start a business and are recruiting new businesses to come here to fill any gaps we have in terms of necessary goods and services. “We don’t want there to be any missed opportunities, so we are looking at what makes sense for this area and we are open to any good ideas. We are even planning to meet with our local farmers to discuss how we can transform each individual operation into more of a commercial entity,” she added. “We have also assembled a team of local and regional people who can respond when a company expresses interest in locating in Vermilion Parish,” Falgout said. Ryan LaGrange, manager of workforce development for the Lafayette Economic Development Authority, works with the Alliance as one of those partners available to evaluate and respond to Vermilion’s opportunities. “When a company considers relocating or expanding to this area, we have to present ourselves on a regional basis to be competitive. They want to look at the commute area around any potential site so they would be asking about workforce availability within a one-hour radius,” LaGrange said. The largest industries in the region by employment are health care, retail trade, accommodation/ food services, and manufacturing. Those health care companies range from full-service hospitals – like Abbeville General and Abrom Kaplan Memorial Hospital – to home health agencies, nursing and assisted living centers, and independent medical offices that offer a variety of services. “It is important to foster growth among our wealth creating industries

ABBEVILLE GENERAL Abbeville General is committed to providing residents with access to quality care close to home in a safe environment. Since 1966, Abbeville General has made many physical improvements, added various services and has maintained their top priority, which is to continually meet the health care needs of their community through progress and a commitment to excellence. Abbeville General offers several medical specialties 24/7 to the community: cardiology, family practice, gastroenterology, gynecology, internal medicine, nephrology, orthopedics, pediatrics, psychiatry, stroke care and surgery. The Abbeville General emergency department provides 24-hour emergency care with all modern equipment and nine treatment rooms with 18 patient care spaces. The department also includes two trauma rooms, a bariatric room, isolation room and a decontamination room. A stroke robot offers emergency physician around-the-clock access to a neurologist through an affiliation with Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. The Cancer Center of Acadiana at Abbeville General provides chemotherapy infusions, as well as other infusion therapies in a 10-chair unit. Enhanced services include a board-certified oncologist, nurse practitioner and collaboration with Lafayette General Medical Center’s radiation oncology unit. The cancer center provides comprehensive cancer care, dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer for the whole person – mind, body and spirit, helping patients fight cancer while maintaining a hold on their life at home. The Sleep Center at Abbeville General provides overnight sleep studies that evaluate and diagnose obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. Sleep studies are performed in a comfortable, homelike environment and can determine if someone would benefit from treatment. All overnight studies are performed by licensed registered polysomnograph technicians and interpreted by a board-certified sleep specialist. Home sleep testing is also available to those who qualify. The surgery department includes three operating suites, two minor procedure suites, an endoscopy suite, a post-anesthesia care unit, a day

surgery/outpatient unit and a holding area. A wide variety of services are offered, including minor procedures, bone marrow biopsies and inpatient and outpatient surgeries. Thanks to technical advances and new, minimally invasive procedures, most patients have same day surgery and are able to return home shortly after surgery. Abbeville General also offers high-definition endoscopy, as well as laparoscopy for certain surgeries. Abbeville General recently invested in Stryker’s 1688 Advanced Imaging Modalities 4K Platform. The 1688 AIM 4K Platform is a minimally invasive surgical tower that provides surgeons with superior visualization and advanced imaging across an array of specialties. Interventional pain therapy, performed by a full-time anesthesiologist, provides pain relief through the use of nerve blocks for patients 

suffering with chronic pain of the lower back and legs. Epidural steroid injections are a minimally invasive procedure that help relieve back and leg pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves. Acute pain, associated with total knee replacements, shoulder surgery and other orthopedic surgeries, is completely eliminated for three days with a nerve block, allowing patients to begin physical therapy the same day of surgery, pain free. Once the patient returns home, there is usually minimal discomfort. Other highly technological diagnostic equipment used at Abbeville General includes full field digital mammography, the gold standard for breast imaging; DXA bone densitometry; GE Medical System 16-slice CT scanner; nuclear non-stress test; EKG/Holter monitoring/stress testing; EEG; echocardiography; arterial blood gas procurement. Myocardial perfusion imaging, a noninvasive imaging test, shows how well blood perfuses the heart muscle. The obstetrics/nursery department contains two private labor and delivery rooms and one antepartum room in the event testing procedures are needed during the pregnancy. After delivery mothers recover in one of the four remodeled postpartum rooms. The HUGS System, where all babies are tagged at delivery, ensures the safety of all babies born at Abbeville General. Primary Care Medical Homes in Abbeville, Maurice and Erath offer primary care to all residents across Vermilion Parish and are all certified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. In these rural health clinics, a variety of family health services are offered, including EPSDT screenings for pediatric patients, obstetric and gynecological services, internal medicine, nephrology and geriatrics. A number of community services are also offered, such as laboratory, immunizations, flu shots and blood pressure checks. In the Abbeville clinic, patients can see a variety of specialists at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, via a computer, using Telemedicine, to diagnose and treat many health conditions. Appointments are taken, and walk-ins are welcome. Abbeville General offers a substance abuse/medical stabilization service called New Vision, is a medically-supervised, hospital-based service for adults experiencing impending or active withdrawal from alcohol, prescription medications or other drugs. Inpatient medical stabilization and withdrawal management is offered for appropriate adults.

ABROM KAPLAN MEMORIAL HOSPITAL Founded in 1958 as a nonprofit, general acute care facility, Abrom Kaplan Memorial Hospital is now a full-service hospital that serves a major role in caring for the hard-working neighbors of Vermilion Parish. Since opening its doors, the hospital has grown to offer a variety of services including 24-hour emergency services and emergency room physicians; Telemedicine consultations; inpatient acute care and skilled nursing facility beds; inpatient & outpatient surgical procedures; high-definition endoscopy; digital radiology; CT scanning; digital mammography; ultrasound; nuclear medicine; bone density; MRI services; pediatrics; EKGs; Holter monitors; home sleep studies; pharmacy services; lab services; inpatient psychiatric services; physical rehabilitation; occupational therapy; home health services; outpatient infusion center; endoscopic and colonoscopy procedures. Since 2002, Abrom Kaplan has benefited from a partial-management arrangement with Lafayette General Health. The arrangement allowed the hospital to pursue strategies, access financial analysis and participate in group-purchasing discounts. In 2018, Abrom Kaplan Memorial Hospital began an expansion that includes a new business office, private patient registration, consultation area, new patient waiting area, conference room, new handicap restrooms, new ultrasound room and a new pharmacy. Other features include consolidating all outpatient cardio procedures, such as EKG, Holter monitoring and home-based sleep studies. Additionally, all phlebotomy will be located just off the lobby area making lab work quick and accessible for patients. Other improvements include dedicated outpatient and inpatient entrances and space for physical, occupational and speech therapy. All radiology will be together, featuring an improved, 64-slice CT scanner and an addition of MRI services. The entire project is slated to be completed by winter 2020. Through building renovations and expansions, Abrom Kaplan Memorial Hospital continues to drive quality care and patient satisfaction, being recognized by the National Rural Hospital Association as a Top 20 Critical Access Hospital for Patient Satisfaction in 2019. Their employees also see the value in working for the hospital, voting the hospital as one of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Best Places to Workâ&#x20AC;? in Modern Healthcare magazine.
