What does it mean to be a young professional? Our target audience for our events is 20-40 year-olds living or working in the Upper Valley. However, we welcome near-peers who would like to learn more about our group or hear from younger voices. We define professional as anyone employed or looking for new opportunities. We are an open and welcoming group. Our goal is to be a resource for young adults in the Upper Valley region of Vermont/New Hampshire who are looking to expand their personal or professional networks. We create

opportunities for young professionals to connect with one another and with their community. We aim to be a high-value network of individuals who contribute to our region and make the Upper Valley a place where young people want to stay, work and play. LOCATION & TRANSPORTATION THE UPPER VALLEY The Upper Valley is a region of New Hampshire and Vermont that straddles the Connecticut River: from Windsor, Vermont, and Cornish, New Hampshire, in the south to Bradford, Vermont, and Piermont, New Hampshire, in the north. The name was coined in the 1950s by the Valley News newspaper to define its circulation area in both states and the name came to define the region. Here in the Upper Valley, the border between the states is more of a suggestion than a reality as residents consider this region one community. The Upper Valley is anchored by the four largest and most central towns, Lebanon and Hanover, New Hampshire, and Hartford and Norwich, Vermont. Located about 135 miles northwest of Boston, the intersection of Interstates 91 and 89 has made the area an important crossroads of northern New England. With the highways so close by, if you rise early you can explore the coast of Maine, catch a Red Sox game at Fenway Park or shop in Montreal – and still be home in time for dinner.

For those who prefer the romance of the rails, Amtrak’s Vermonter offers daily service from nearby White River Junction, Vermont to St. Albans, Vermont, for northbound travelers, or New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., for those southbound. Prefer not to get behind the wheel? Several car services, shuttle services and two bus lines offer the chance to catch up on reading, take a nap or watch a movie on a trip to Boston or New York. Dartmouth Coach offers daily service to Boston, Logan Airport and New York City in a coach bus with Wi-Fi and power outlets, plenty of legroom and storage. A Greyhound Bus terminal in White River Junction, Vermont, provides service to Boston, New York and Montreal Thanks to a unique partnership among Hanover, Lebanon, Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Advance Transit offers free shuttle bus transportation from the shopping plazas of West Lebanon to Hanover and Dartmouth College, from Canaan, New Hampshire, to Hartford Village, Vermont, and between Hanover and Norwich. Another green alternative at Dartmouth College is “Zipcars for Universities,” an initiative that offers rental cars on demand by the hour or day.

GETTING HERE Lebanon Airport in Lebanon, New Hampshire, features short lines and daily round trips to Boston’s Logan Airport and White Plains, New York, where connections can be made across the country or around the globe. Charter flights also operate out of this modern facility that features on-site car rentals and free Wi-Fi. An easy 80-minute drive brings you to the Manchester Airport, which has connections all over the U.S. and has become a popular alternative to Boston’s Logan Airport. The drive to Vermont’s Burlington Airport is also about 80 minutes.

EDUCATION

Education is an important tool that can sharpen the abilities of students and shape minds to become successful. New Hampshire is home to some wonderful educational institutes for both young students and adult learners. The Hanover school district is notable for being recognized as the nation’s first interstate school district, which is composed of four districts: Hanover, Norwich, Dresden and the School Administrative Unit 70. The Bernice A. Ray School in Hanover offers a comprehensive curriculum for students in kindergarten through fifth grade with a focus in the arts and interdisciplinary project-based learning. Children are treated as more than just students; they are given the opportunity to learn how to become a functioning member of society. Through the five-week “Kids and Community” program, students meet with the local police officers, firefighters, dispatchers, town leaders, school administrators and Hanover High School students. Through the “Haven Helpers” community service program at Upper Valley Haven, a homeless shelter in White Valley Junction, students learn from an early age the value of lending a helping hand. In Norwich, the Marion Cross School for students in kindergarten through sixth grade takes a unique approach for teaching. Teachers at Marion Cross School make it a point to guide students through difficult learning scenarios by taking the extra time to make sure their students grasp the lesson. A School Culture Team composed of two students from upper grade levels come together to develop ideas that may improve the school, such as selecting the school mascot, organizing a picnic day and bringing a therapy dog to visit students. Reading is an important aspect of building a student’s vocabulary and broadening the imagination. Marion Cross School welcomes two author visits per year to nurture the joy of reading. Mount Lebanon Elementary School is known for its stimulating and safe environment to foster academic achievement in students from its kindergarten through fourth-grade classes. Mount Lebanon will soon feature a new club in Aerospace Engineering, but currently offers a Junior First LEGO League, MLS Code Club and the Young Inventors Club to inspire the values of STEAM education. Meanwhile, the MLS

Green Club instills in its members the importance of the earth, as gardening practice and insect identification are just some practices of the club. Hanover Street School also offers its students in kindergarten through fourth grade the chance to let out their inner expression by participating in the Drama Club. After-school activities also include Engineering Adventures, HSS Code Club, HSS Green Thumbs and Young Inventors Club. Francis C. Richmond Middle School in Hanover offers students a wide variety of extracurricular activities with values in science and technology to the performing arts and languages. Lebanon Middle School teaches its students to take pride in their school by participating in “The Voice of LMS,” a student-published magazine. LMS athletes can choose from a variety of sports to play in, such as field hockey, football, basketball, softball and baseball. Ice Hockey is offered through the Upper Valley Hockey Association, and other sports such as soccer, lacrosse and track are offered through the Lebanon Recreation and Parks Department. Other extracurricular activities range from the Art Club, Jazz Band and Treble Makers to the Math Team and First LEGO League Robotics. The Lyme School is open to children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Innovation, creativity and community are the three pillars the school strives to communicate with its students. Hanover High School leads students to success with its Project Running Start dual enrollment program. Students can earn college credit by participating in a math or English course offered by the Community College System of New Hampshire. Top students will receive the benefit of taking courses at Dartmouth College. In 2020, Hanover High School was ranked No. 4 among New Hampshire high schools. It was recognized for having a 98% graduation rate and a total enrollment of 724 students. Educators at Lebanon High School impart the values of critical and creative thinking in their students, while also nurturing them to graduate as a responsible and empathetic global citizen. Students of Lebanon High School can land a spot in the National Honor Society and has a vast array of extracurricular activities to participate in, such as Youth in Action, Robotics Team, Literary Magazine and Students for a Sustainable Future.

The Mascoma Valley Regional School District in Enfield includes four schools within its district: Canaan and Enfield elementary schools, Indian River Middle School and Mascoma Valley Regional High School. Private schools such as Crossroads Academy in Lyme or Montessori Discovery School in Lebanon may be what you’re looking for. Both schools cultivate learning by providing classes that expand students’ intellectual horizons. Post-secondary education such as the Granite State College, River Valley Community College and Dartmouth College are all exceptional choices, whether you are a high school graduate moving on to the next big thing or an adult who seeks to expand their knowledge. Granite State College is built on the foundation to make education flexible and affordable for working adults. Students can take classes online or at one of its campuses in New Hampshire. Adults between the ages of 25 to 49 years make up the majority of its student population for both undergraduate and graduate learning. At Granite State College, students can earn their associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree. The college also offers post-baccalaureate program for teachers, credit for prior learning and a variety of transfer opportunities. Granite State College is also one of the fewer institutions to offer the lowest tuition rates in New England. Students who attend River Valley Community College have a 93% job placement rate and can choose from 33 degree and certificates offered. RVCC can provide training opportunities for students and the community alike, such as CPR, Microsoft Applications, leadership and workforce training. Scholarship opportunities are regularly available by visiting the River Valley Community College website. Students at RVCC can take advantage of free tutoring services while the Advising, Career and Transfer Center can provide support for transitioning into a career or four-year college. If Ivy League is what your heart desires, then look no further than Dartmouth College, one of New England’s oldest institutions. Dartmouth undergraduates can earn a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Engineering degree with more than 60 majors to choose from. Graduate programs are offered by the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies along with professional programs at the Geisel School of Medicine, Thayer

School of Engineering and the Tuck School of Business. With more than 50 research centers and institutes, Dartmouth’s faculty are distinguished by their expertise. Dartmouth College recently made news when it was selected by the National Science Foundation to lead a research program aimed at improving security and privacy in homes that use smart devices. Adults with a passion for learning don’t have to enroll full-time to reap the benefits of attending a prestigious university. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a nonprofit organization designed to provide year-round education opportunities for residents in the greater Upper Valley and North Haverhill. What’s more, Dartmouth’s 10 libraries are open to the public. The college also offers public events through seminars on campus or virtual meetings. HEALTH CARE

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is a 417-bed tertiary care hospital, New Hampshire’s only Level 1 trauma center and multi-specialty group practice located on the Hanover-Lebanon town line. The medical center is part of New Hampshire’s only academic health system, with nearly 1,200 primary and specialty care physicians located throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. The medical center’s academic partner is the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, one of the leading medical schools in the country. DartmouthHitchcock is also one of the largest employers in the state with more than 10,000 employees. It has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as among the nation’s top 50 hospitals for gynecology for the ninth time since 1995; its bariatric surgery program has earned a Level 1 accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program; and in 2003 Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center was the first New Hampshire facility to be recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a “Magnet Hospital” for nursing excellence, an honor

that was redesignated in 2009. Dartmouth-Hitchcock is also home to the Children’s Hospital at DartmouthHitchcock, New Hampshire’s only comprehensive, full-service children’s hospital and the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, New Hampshire’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital (APD) in Lebanon is a non-profit, community-based health care organization. APD cares for 20,000 patients annually and has a strong reputation for personalized attention. APD also specializes in shortstay ambulatory surgery and other specialty services. APD includes APD Lifecare, a non-profit senior living community that support more than 150 residents in assisted and independent living. APD is a member of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health System. The Upper Valley area features a number of individual and group family practices, including the Good Neighbor Clinic in White River Junction, which assures quality medical care for those without the means to pay, and the Red Logan Dental Clinic that offers care to those unable to pay for dental work.

DINING The Upper Valley is a dining destination with locally owned and operated restaurants that specialize in chef-inspired cuisine and true New England hospitality. Whether you prefer Italian, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, American, Thai, pub fare, tapas or continental cuisine, you can find it here. LOCAL FLAVOR The American Precision Museum in Windsor, Vermont, shines a spotlight on the heritage of the mechanical arts. The museum houses the largest collection of historically significant machine tools in the nation. Eclipse Grange is a nonprofit theater in Thetford, Vermont. Visitors can get a taste for a homegrown experience by watching works produced by local artists, as well as enjoying classic plays. Vermont is bursting with flavor and if you enjoy baking, then a must-see is King Arthur Baking Company in Norwich. Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vermont, offers visitors a handson experience with more than 140 exhibits relating to the natural and physical sciences, ecology and technology. Located near the Connecticut River, the museum’s outdoor setting is as educational as what can be found inside. Relive your childhood wonders by visiting the Vermont Toy Museum in Quechee, Vermont. The museum has on display a collection of cherished toys from each decade starting in the early 1800s. The Hopkins Center for the Arts (The HOP) at Dartmouth offers live events, film showings and theater presented by students of all class levels. AVA Gallery and Art Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire promotes the visual arts that supports New England artists and provides art classes for any age and skill level.

The Nugget Theater in Hanover, New Hampshire is a small four-screen movie theater that offers first run movies. It first opened in 1916 and serves as an upstanding example of local history. one of Vermont’s most beautiful natural wonders, also known as “Vermont’s Little Grand Canyon” in Quechee. Visitors will experience vistas 168 feet from the bridge above the Ottaquechee River. It’s a beautiful spot to enjoy a picnic or to venture the trails along the mile-long chasm. The gorge is within walking distance of Quechee Gorge Village and Quechee State Park, where you can shop and eat. Balch Hill Natural Area in Hanover, New Hampshire is clearly a favorite among residents for its plethora of trails, picnic areas and bird watching. Ten trails from easy to moderate lead to the 937-foot summit. Watch history unfold by coming across sugar maples and red oak trees that are nearly 200 years old. Bird watchers should keep an eye out for Balch Hill’s year-round residents that include barred owls, ruffed grouse, turkeys, blue jays and chickadees. You may also come across some wildlife, such as the white-tailed deer, porcupine, raccoon, fisher, short-tailed weasel, skunk, red fox, snowshoe hare, red and gray squirrels. The Boston Lot Lake and Wilder Dam Ledges is a great place for recreation and camping year-round in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Many visitors enjoy the opportunity to hike, snowshoe, ski, hunt, fish and picnic. Holt’s Ledge in Hanover, New Hampshire, offers an easy day hike from 2.2 miles to 13 miles. Hikers may get the chance to spot a few peregrine falcons, which are a protected species. Holt’s Ledge is a fenced cliff that, on a clear day, offers extensive views of Smarts Mountain, Mount Cardigan, Ragged Mountain, Mount Kearsarge and Mount Ascutney. M*A*S*H fans will be delighted to discover the Trapper John Shelter, 0.6 miles from the trailhead, which was named in honor of the television character. Mount Cardigan in Orange, New Hampshire is a moderate day hike from 3.3 miles to 25 miles. The Cardigan Mountain State Park spans 5,655 acres and trails leading from the West Ridge Trail and South Ridge

Trail. Hikers that reach the summit at 3,155 feet will catch some panoramic views and can see the White Mountains, Camel’s Hump in Vermont and Pleasant Mountain in Maine. The Storrs Pond Recreation Area in Hanover, New Hampshire has many summer activities for families including swimming, tennis and summer camps. Camping is available for New Hampshire residents and members. This recreation center offers members a chance to cool off this summer with access to a sandy beach, swimming pool and splash pad. Those looking for a little more activity can sweat it out on the basketball and tennis courts, or by some friendly competition on the disc golf course. The Storrs Pond Recreation Area also features trails for hiking and mountain biking, while the pond is stocked with trout. MOUNTAIN BIKING The Northern Rail Trail starts in Lebanon and takes you 56 miles through scenic towns and around Mascoma Lake to Boscawen, New Hampshire. The Mascoma Greenway trail allows you to bike or walk through Lebanon to the Connecticut River.
