History landscapes and structures (notably the Old Dutch Church and burying ground, which served as an important setting in the short story).

A

lthough the area was originally home to the Weckquaesgeek Indians, the histories of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown did not begin until the late 1600s with the arrival of wealthy Dutch businessman Frederick Philipse. Philipse was given permission to purchase large tracts of land along the Hudson River’s eastern shore. He ultimately acquired around 90,000 acres of land and set to building his manor house, the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow and a gristmill.

Today, Tarrytown stands as a town of approximately 11,500, Sleepy Hollow at Photo courtesy of Jim Logan

During the 18th century, much of community life revolved around the gristmill, but there were a few farms and small shops that were also established in the area. Though the village was located on “The Neutral Ground,” a hotly contested no-man’s-land during the American Revolution, it was the site of one very important event. It was in Tarrytown that a British spy, Major John Andre, was captured with papers outlining a plot to surrender West Point to the British army – which was given to him by Benedict Arnold. Three local militiamen – John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart and David Williams – caught Andre and exposed the plot on September 23, 1780.

The 19th century brought on new growth, and in 1874 Sleepy Hollow incorporated as a village under the name North Tarrytown, until its renaming in 1996. At the turn of the century, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow began attracting new businesses and wealthy families, who began building sprawling castle-mansions. As a result, the area of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown became known as a “millionaire’s colony.”

about 9,000. The villages have worked to ensure that the history of this charming area remains preserved. The Historical Society of Sleepy Hollow & Tarrytown maintains a museum packed with local artifacts, pictures and documents from the 1600s to the present day. In addition, Historic Hudson Valley (HHV) oversees several of the Hudson River Valley’s major historic attractions, such as Washington Irving’s Sunnyside estate, the Philipse family’s Philipsburg Manor and the beautiful Union Church of Pocantico Hills, while the National Trust for Historic Preservation maintains the Lyndhurst estate and the Rockefeller family’s Kykuit estate (though, HHV operates Kykuit’s tour program).

The arrival of another important figure in the late 1790s would put the area on the map for centuries to come. Author Washington Irving spent time hunting, fishing and socializing in the community with friend and relative James Paulding. Later, Irving would immortalize the community in his tale, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow – depicting the local

America’s premier Gothic Revival mansion and magnificent Hudson Valley estate. Open year round for guided tours, special events and venue rental.

Dear Friends, Fifteen years ago this village on the Hudson River voted to change its name from North Tarrytown to Sleepy Hollow. Historically, Sleepy Hollow is how we are identified on both maps and in literature. Anyone familiar with Washington Irving’s short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” will be able to pick out landmarks, especially the Old Dutch Church and Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. William Rockefeller gave the funding to replace the Horseman Bridge on Route 9, the road where Ichabod Crane encountered the Headless Horseman. The area is awash in American History. Here, at the Philipsburg Manor plantation, dating from 1693 was one of the largest slave-trading operations in the colonial North. Owned by an Anglo-Dutch family with tenant farmers from many European countries, it was originally listed as a patroonship with New Netherlands and later received a deed from England. During the Revolutionary War, the battle lines between the English Red Coats and the local partisans shifted frequently. The great spy Major John André was captured at the checkpoint now marked at Patriot’s Park “preventing disaster to the American cause.” And we don’t want to forget North Tarrytown. Our history as a place for hardworking families sustaining a robust American industry is revealed in that name, too. Irving is buried in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, as are many of the people who populated his stories. You can also find the gravestones of such disparate American figures as Andrew Carnegie, Samuel Gompers, Walter Chrysler, and Brooke Astor. One of the heroes of the Revolution, Helga the Witch, was also granted space. It is worth spending time walking through the grounds and continuing your walk through the trails of the Old Croton Aqueduct and the Rockefeller Preserve. The Rockefeller home at Kykuit is also worth your time. We hope to have the 1883 Lighthouse restored to allow for more tours soon. More walks can be had along the Hudson where the views are breathtaking. In yet another era, we were known as Beekmantown. When you visit please take the time to walk Beekman Avenue to visit our shops and restaurants. The ethnic diversity that is a hallmark of today’s village is on full display here. October is an especially good time of year to visit when we celebrate our status as the “Halloween Capital of the World” with our famous Haunted Hayride, street fairs, parades and, of course, the Headless Horseman. Welcome to our hometown, the Village of Tarrytown, situated among the rolling hills of the Hudson River’s eastern shore, in an area called the Tappan Zee. Located just 25 miles North of New York City, Tarrytown is a village that proudly celebrates its rich history, abundant natural resources, lively downtown, and diverse community-minded people. Our first residents were the Weckquaesgeek Indians, who farmed their fields for corn, squash, beans, and tobacco, fished the Hudson for shad, oysters and other shellfish, and hunted the forests for deer and black bear. In the 1600s the first European settlers -- Dutch farmers, fur trappers, and fishermen -- arrived. They found that the soil was ideal for growing cereals, especially wheat, which led to the area being known as Terve, or Tarwe (the Dutch word for “wheat”) Town, which later became mispronounced as Tarrytown (Washington Irving, however, in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” used his poetic license to suggest that the name was given “by the good housewives of the adjacent county, from the inveterate propensity of their husbands to linger about the village tavern on market days.”). The village and surrounding areas, dominated by the 90,000-acre manor of Frederick Philipse, now a restored historic site, remained primarily agricultural through the first half of the 19th century. During the mid-1800’s, the Village began its transformation into a manufacturing, trading and retail economy, as factories producing shoes, silk, steam pumps, ships and other products sprung up and the population increased significantly. Always favored by our connection to the Hudson River and our harbor, the Village’s commercial fortunes advanced further when in 1849 the rail line between New York City and Albany opened. And, while many of the factory workers lived in modest homes, numerous larger residences and even mansions were built along the Hudson River and its view shed, making Tarrytown a haven for the “rich and famous” of the day. The Victorian architecture of that era can still be seen in numerous residential and commercial buildings throughout the village, most of which have been carefully preserved and/or restored. While Tarrytown today has shed its industrial legacy, with nearly all of the factories long-closed, the Village continues to thrive. We have transformed ourselves into not just a commonplace bedroom community, but a sought-after destination for residents and visitors alike, offering an astonishing array of resources, both natural and human. Our downtown is vibrant and flourishing, anchored by the 125-year old Tarrytown Music Hall and home to numerous restaurants and stores. It retains the authentic character of a true village center, with hundreds of residents living not only in apartments above shops but in the many homes within easy walking distance of Main Street. Our formerly industrial waterfront is completely open to the public, with a brand new RiverWalk park, two boat clubs and a high-end retail/residential development underway on the adjacent upland property. Other parks abound, with many hundreds of acres of forested open space and miles of trails available to hikers, walkers and runners. We are also the center of one of the greatest concentrations of historic and tourist sites in the nation: The Lyndhurst Mansion, Sunnyside (the home of Washington Irving), Patriots Park (with its monument commemorating the capture of Major Andre during the Revolutionary War), Kykuit (the Rockefeller family estate), Phillipsburg Manor Restoration, the Old Dutch Church and Cemetery, the Pocantico Church (with its Chagall and Matisse stained glass windows) and the Stone Barns Agricultural Center all within a few miles of our downtown. And to serve our many visitors, there are several major hotels and a conference center. We even have a castle—now a world class-restaurant and inn. But the truly greatest resource we have is our residents. Tarrytown community members come from all walks of life, from the descendents of the original Dutch settlers, to the descendents of slaves, to the descendents of men and women who worked in factories, to newly-arrived immigrants: from those who perform manual labor, to scientists, to teachers, to police officers, to doctors, to investment bankers to producers of Broadway shows. We have an enormous range of houses of worship, 2 public school systems that send students to the finest colleges in the nation as well as a top-tier private high school and the international language institute that each year brings in over 1,000 young people from around the world to learn English. Taken together, Tarrytown has something very rare indeed - the diversity and vibrancy of a cosmopolitan center set within the friendly and sustainable environment of small-town America. I am proud and honored to be the mayor of this exceptional village. Drew Fixell, Mayor, Village of Tarrytown

Worship W

orship has been a part of the Sleepy HollowTarrytown area since its beginnings. The first church, the famous Old Dutch Church, was built by Frederick Philipse around 1685 – just 200 yards from his estate. The church was immortalized following the publishing of Washington Irving’s short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, in the early 1800s. The Old Dutch Church is recognized among the oldest in the nation and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many historic features remain in the church, including the original 1685 bell and the 17th century communion table. Philipse, his second wife, Catherine van Cortlandt, and more than a dozen family members are buried in a crypt beneath the communion table. The Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow is still an active house of worship and is today joined by many other religious institutions – one of which is Christ Episcopal Church. Christ Episcopal Church was built in 1837, it was here that Washington Irving worshipped at the end of his life. You can still come in and sit and pray in his pew or browse the many artifacts, which are kept in the church library.
