The Simpsonville Area Chamber of Commerce has the unique privilege of serving our local business community as well as local visitors and newcomers. Here at the Chamber, we are committed to being a positive force in providing leadership and advocacy to unite and improve the local business community. We coordinate professional programming, events, and initiatives designed to create more business opportunities, better living conditions, and a more attractive and desirable community in which to live, work, and visit. I am passionate about the role that our Chamber plays in community growth and economic development. We give back to the community and improve the quality of life by influencing issues like public policy, education, and community development. The City of Simpsonville and I welcome you to a place that both residents and visitors alike can simply call home. Whether you have lived in the city all your life or are just passing through, you will find that Simpsonville has everything one might need. Simpsonville has the charm of a small town, abundant choices for living, locallyowned shops and restaurants and national businesses. An old downtown hardware store has become an exciting retail and commercial center, and the grounds of an old mill are now the foundation of a luxury apartment complex, the architecture of which honors the mill. Simpsonville is the stage of the Upstate. Performers from around the world come to the CCNB Amphitheater at Heritage Park to play for both residents living next to the amphitheater and out-of-towners traveling hundreds of miles. Music echoes from venues in and near downtown, such as a local shop on Main Street or Hendricks Pavilion next to City Park. The City of Simpsonville has come a long way since Peter Simpson settled on the land as a blacksmith in the 1830s. Mr. Simpson’s foundry would become the forge of a dynamic city with schools to educate our children, centers for recreation and fields that remain in place to play ball. From our earliest days, family has been the cornerstone of Simpsonville, and families with deep roots stand side by side with those who have discovered that this place offers the very best of our growing region. We are a child eating an ice cream cone, a friendly wave from a neighbor, a historic mill converted to lofts, a clock tower standing sentinel and a city with confidence in its future. LEADERSHIP GOLDEN STRIP LGS Class raises $130,000 to build Splash Pad in the Golden Strip The Simpsonville Area and Fountain Inn Chambers of Commerce partnered in 2019 to host the inaugural class of Leadership Golden Strip, a leadership development program for local business people in the Golden Strip area. The two Chambers will now welcome the Greater Mauldin Chamber of Commerce into the partnership to host Class 2. Leadership Golden Strip is a 10-month program for professionals with the desire and ability to shape the future of our vibrant communities. Through face-to-face meetings with regional leaders and on-site visits with local agencies and businesses, participants will explore the major issues and unique challenges facing the Golden Strip area. “We are thrilled for this opportunity to collaborate with our neighboring Chamber, and to offer a robust leadership development option for members of our community,” said Simpsonville Area Chamber President Allison McGarity. The Simpsonville Area Chamber has a strong history of developing community leaders by providing its own Leadership Simpsonville program, which was incorporated into the leadership program. Members of Class 1 completed a rigorous application process, upheld the program’s strict attendance policy, and met all program requirements in order to graduate. Most notably, the class worked together to raise more than $130,000 to design and install a brand new splash pad in the heart of

Fountain Inn. Many local businesses supported the effort, with Greenville Water as the Diamond Sponsor. The Splash Pad opened in August and is free for the community to enjoy. Leadership Golden Strip is a dynamic program that supports the development of corporate and community leaders by introducing them to the various aspects of developing and maintaining a vibrant community, helping them to establish dialogue with fellow community leaders, and facilitating their contributions to the betterment of the community. Leadership Golden Strip fuels a constant network of informed and community-minded leaders who will go on to work for our local businesses, start their own ventures, serve in public offices, and continue to give back to those around them. The program begins with a formal orientation session and continues with monthly sessions that cover topics such as local and state government, education, arts and history, infrastructure, and more. Each session includes facility tours, expert presentations and one-on-one meetings with aspirational community leaders. As the business community continues to grow, McGarity is excited about the future of the partnership with the Fountain Inn and Mauldin Chambers. “We are constantly looking for strategies to shake things up and increase the value that our Chamber provides for the business community here in Simpsonville,” she said. “Leadership Golden Strip is one of our pillar programs which upholds the Chamber’s mission statement. SIMPSONVILLE’S ECONOMIC ENGINE The Chamber of Commerce powers local business

Business owners have an invaluable resource in the Simpsonville Area Chamber of Commerce and its staff – and that is no small thing as entrepreneurs navigate the ins and outs of running a business and juggling the many roles that requires. JR Humphries, Development Manager for the Chamber, said opportunities to grow and network are abundant. “We are the economic engine that powers the local business community. We advocate for our members and work tirelessly every day to make Simpsonville a better place to live, work, and play.” Simpsonville businesses look to the Chamber for opportunities to increase their visibility and their bottom line, and they know that the Chamber represents them at the local and state level when it comes to legislative issues and important decisions. Humphries is passionate about the role that Chamber membership can play in personal relationship building, professional networking, and the business growth that results. The Fairview Road/Harrison Bridge Road area features national retailers and large commercial developments. Five Forks has an intriguing variety of local and regional franchises. The West Georgia Road area includes the Brashier Campus of Greenville Technical College, medical offices, and grocery stores. Each of these commercial areas is evolving to meet the needs of Simpsonville’s residents. DOWNTOWN’S CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT What once was the ruins of a defunct mill on South Street is now the site of Cotton Mill Luxury Apartments. Not only does this development provide competitive living space, it also pays homage to the former mill through its architecture and preservation of historic landmarks like the mill’s original smokestack. The Cotton Mill project is an example in Simpsonville of balanced, progressive, and smart economic development. A couple of streets over, the building in which Burdette Hardware had served the City of Simpsonville starting in 1899 is being revitalized. Now called Burdette Central, the mixed-use

development is getting a modern makeover that harkens back to its roots through its name and design elements. A pizza restaurant, coffee shop, and additional retail tenants and professional office space are all planned for the site. Across the street from Burdette Central is the new downtown plaza on South Main Street. An under-utilized alleyway was transformed into a gathering space with bistro tables and chairs, planters, lighting, and public restroom facilities. The plaza serves as a gathering space in the city that will encourage foot traffic up and down Main Street. FAIRVIEW ROAD CORRIDOR The Fairview Road area features many national retailers and convenient shopping destinations, and continues to grow while maintaining its greenery. A recent development in the area is a 22.5-acre shopping center, where most commercial building is taking place. The architecture of the buildings complements the heritage of the old farmland on which the center was developed. Newly established businesses in the shopping center are Chili’s and Sharonview Federal Credit Union, with more projects on the way. Other retailers in the area include Petco, PetSmart, Michaels, Planet Fitness and Bee Safe Storage. A new Aldi store recently opened. Tracts of land remain available in this area, so it is certain there is more to come in the years ahead. FIVE FORKS The Five Forks area of Simpsonville boasts a median household income that’s more than twice that of the state’s, and a lot of the commercial development in the area serves that market. Lowes Foods is a regional grocery chain that opened a new store model in the area to offer fresh local produce, made-to-order meals and a full-service deli and bakery, plus all the brands typically found at a grocery store. A boutique fitness studio, fresh smoothie shop, and a salon have also joined the shopping strip. Five Forks also boasts a state-of-the-art branch of the Greenville County Library System. The 28,000-square-foot Five Forks Branch is

the second largest out of all 12 branches, has two drive-up windows, and offers the latest technology that makes checking materials in and out fast and efficient. WEST GEORGIA ROAD Although the West Georgia Road area may be the least developed, this area too is rapidly changing. The current renovation of Cotton Mill Commons to bring Class A apartments to the area is expected to increase property values and improve quality of life. In recent years, a Neighborhood Wal-Mart has opened, several multi-family complexes are in process, and announcements of planned developments are anxiously awaited. As the momentum of economic growth and development builds, it’s no wonder why the Simpsonville community continues to be a vibrant place for people to call home and earn a living. Simpsonville is proudly meeting the challenge of planning for its economic future while keeping its small-town charm with thoughtful sustainable growth.

When it comes to entertainment, recreation, and amenities, the City of Simpsonville has it all. Whether one is looking for a large concert venue that hosts world-renowned acts or a smaller venue for local favorites, Simpsonville has it. Whether a family wants to visit a spacious park with running trails and ball fields one weekend and a children’s playground and dog park the next, Simpsonville has it. Whether an on-the-go professional must make short trips to nearby metropolitan areas or catch the occasional lastminute flight, Simpsonville has it. Heritage Park is one of Simpsonville’s greatest assets. Located on N.E. Main Street, Heritage Park has a full-size amphitheater, athletic fields, walking trails, and two playgrounds and is home to family-favorite events like Movies in the Park, an annual Easter egg hunt, an Independence Day celebration, Halloween at Heritage Park, and Christmas at Heritage Park. CCNB Amphitheatre at Heritage Park is a full-size amphitheater that seats up to 16,000 people and hosts star performers. Past acts at the CCNB Amphitheatre at Heritage Park include Clint Black and Trace Adkins, Collective Soul, Wu Tang Clan, Hank Williams Jr., Post Malone and Foreigner. Simply put, our backyard is the Upstate’s stage. City Park is another beacon of entertainment in Simpsonville. Smaller in size than Heritage Park but equal in opportunities for familyfriendly fun, City Park has a walking trail, basketball and tennis courts, community center building, a sensory playground, and dog park. Adjacent to City Park is Hendricks Pavilion, a miniature amphitheatre that hosts the Simpsonville Summer Music Series & Food Truck Rodeo in June, July, and August. Simpsonville’s unique location in the Upstate makes key areas and nearby cities easily accessible.

Seated near a major interchange of interstates 385 and 85, Simpsonville is 20 minutes from downtown Greenville, 30 minutes from the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, and an hour-and-a-half from both Atlanta and Charlotte. City of Simpsonville community relations specialist Justin Campbell said the entertainment and recreation opportunities and ease of access provided to travelers make Simpsonville special. “Whether the topic is recreation, economic development, or responsible growth, Simpsonville is simply successful,” Campbell said. “Simpsonville is not just a bedroom community. We have amphitheatres, parks, free annual events, a farmer’s market, new commercial and housing developments, and more in the works. It’s simply fun to live, work, and especially play in Simpsonville.” The City of Simpsonville has captured the essence of Simpsonville in its new brand with input from small business owners, community leaders, city officials, and the public. Simpsonville’s new tagline “Simply Home”

encapsulates the desire for a brand that is bold, fresh, and confident. With a new tagline, logo, and official seal, the City of Simpsonville is poised to promote connectivity, community, and pride in what residents and visitors alike can call “home.” In addition to rebranding, the city has also undertaken the process of developing a new downtown Simpsonville master plan. With recent growth, increases in population, and more opportunities on the horizon, now is the time to update the heart of the city while connecting all parts of the city. Coupled with the city’s new brand, the downtown master plan will be a blueprint that will make Simpsonville simply successful.

L O C A L E D U C AT I O N The people of Simpsonville value education and realize its importance in the lives of their children. Programs abound to help students achieve success, no matter what their particular talents and interests may be. GREENVILLE COUNTY SCHOOLS All public schools in Greenville County are part of a single district called Greenville County Schools. Greenville County Schools educates an average of 75,550 students annually, spread over more than 800 square miles in Greenville County, as well as small parts of Spartanburg and Laurens Counties. Approximately 12,000 of those students attend a school, child development center, or career technology center in the Simpsonville area. Many of the district’s facilities have been recognized with state and national awards. The district boasts several National Blue Ribbon Schools, Palmetto’s Finest schools, a National PTA School of Excellence, a National School of Character, a South Carolina School of Promise, and another which earned the Baldrige Model of Continuous Improvement recognition. Simpsonville Elementary earned the Recognized American School Counselor Association Model Program designation in 2016-17. The district’s schools in Simpsonville and the entire county emphasize the importance of preparing for life beyond high school as part of the Graduation Plus initiative, which begins when young children enter school for the first time. Through this initiative, elementary school faculties are focused on building a sound foundation in the basic disciplines and increasing students’ exposure to a variety of careers. At the middle school level, enhanced academic rigor is paired with greater exposure to career and college opportunities and an introduction to 16 basic career clusters. During high school, students are now building their electives around potential college or career paths.

Greenville County Schools is helping all of their students develop world class skills by providing diverse opportunities for individual growth through project-based learning and the implementation of innovative courses in the arts, architecture, engineering, industry, business, law, agriculture, health science, and more. The district’s school choice program allows students to focus their studies on their individual interests and skills by providing the option to attend one of several magnet schools in the area. Currently, approximately 15% of the district’s students take advantage of school choice and are spread between a Fine Arts Center, four International Baccalaureate Diploma high schools, four career and technical education centers, and other schools with specific focuses. GOLDEN STRIP CAREER CENTER The Golden Strip Career Center is part of the Greenville County School district, and serves students in the Simpsonville, Mauldin, and Fountain Inn communities. The Golden Strip Career Center is a place where students learn skills that prepare them for careers. Students not only learn technical and trade skills, but also key soft skills that contribute to long-term employability. At the Golden Strip Career Center, work-based learning happens through cooperative education, internships, or apprenticeship experiences. During a co-op, a student may attend school a day or two per week but go to their work site the other days. Internships are more general and can occur afterschool or during the summer. Apprenticeships have training plans that are usually registered with the Department of Labor and involve a minimum of 2000 training hours. All of these learning plans depends on the local business community, and are a “win-win” for all. Students are able to apply the skills they are learning in class to real-world situations and companies can see, firsthand, a student’s work ethic and skills. These companies have the opportunity to instill their training and values in a young employee, making long-term retention and loyalty much more likely. “We want our students to recognize the difference between staying in an entry-level job and having the opportunity to advance into a rewarding career thanks to their work ethic and skills,” said Lynn Tuten, Golden Strip Career Center Work-Based Learning Coordinator. There are many examples of Golden Strip Career Center graduates who have participated in work-based learning while students and are still in rewarding careers with the same companies. Golden Strip Career Center has numerous business partners in these endeavors including Michelin, Gregory Electric, Brasfield and Gorrie, Stueken, Rick Erwins and more. These are paid experiences, usually involving industry competitive entry-level wages. “These impressive opportunities are available through the classes at Golden Strip Career Center,” said JF Lucas, the Center’s Director. “The graduation rate for students involved in career and technical education is 97%. Golden Strip Career Center provides students the opportunities to discover a skill they love; develop those skills; and apply them in the real world. This leads to satisfaction for businesses and rewarding careers for students.” GREENVILLE TECHNICAL COLLEGE A popular option for higher education after high school is nearby Greenville Technical College’s Brashier Campus. It is the most convenient community college campus for residents of Simpsonville, Mauldin, Fountain Inn, and other nearby communities. It houses core programs including nursing, welding, industrial maintenance/mechatronics, and fire science. The campus also offers high quality general education courses that transfer to any college or university. For this reason, GTC is a good place for local residents to begin their higher education. In fact, high school students are encouraged to pursue dual enrollment in GTC courses while simultaneously completing their high school requirements. Greenville Technical College also plays an active part in the surrounding community. The school’s leadership understands that an educated workforce attracts new businesses and encourages economic development in a region. The Brashier Campus partners closely with local municipal, business, and education leaders on a variety of local councils in order to foster community growth.

FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT CENTER “Welcome to the no judgment zone. Before you leave, we’re going to talk about where you are today and where you want to go.” Sara Carter, a Bilingual Financial Empowerment Counselor with Greenville County Human Relations Commission, greets each of her new clients the same way. As part of Greenville County Human Relations Commission’s Financial Empowerment Center initiative, Carter and her fellow professional Financial Empowerment counselors make themselves available at agencies throughout the community. Twice a week, Carter wheels in her mobile office to the Simpsonville Chamber of Commerce to educate, equip, and empower people no matter where they are on their financial journey. “It’s not what you have that counts. It’s what you do with what you have,” Carter said. Carter knows many people have a complicated relationship with money, so part of her job is removing that intimidation factor by focusing on lifestyle goals. “It’s not about the money. Finance is a tool to reach that apple and pull it off the tree.” After discerning what kinds of lifestyle goals people have – from establishing a savings account to buying a first home to securing a financial future that includes retirement, Carter frequently asks follow-up questions to discover a person’s underutilized natural strengths. “I am a strong believer that everyone has a gift.” Carter wants to be sure her clients aren’t overlooking the core resource they are in possession of – themselves. Reaching people is only the first step of many, none of which will be walked alone. “Some families come in and they’re at ground zero. Some already have some pieces in place.” Within three to six months, Carter sees many of the people she serves begin to turn things around. From improving credit, decreasing debt, establishing savings, and achieving home ownership, Carter is with her clients for each step of their journeys. “I give my clients

Pigtails & Crewcuts is a children’s hair salon in the bustling Five Forks area of Simpsonville. Pigtails and Crewcuts participated in the Chamber’s 2018 Holiday Decorating Contest and took the top place prize. They played up the train theme by making the salon feel like the real Polar Express.
