COMMUNITY PROFILES Round Lake

The Village of Round Lake, located in northwest Lake County, is a growing and diverse community known for its family-oriented character and beautiful open spaces. Covering 5.6 square miles, Round Lake has 19,264 residents and 150 businesses. Round Lake has a quaint downtown complete with a Metra Station. The village is home to the Round Lake Area Public Library, Round Lake Areas School District 116, Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Round Lake Area Park District. Founded in 1908, the village grew from the main industry of harvesting ice from Round Lake. With the extension of the train line and a train station, Round Lake continued to grow and prosper. Round Lake is unique to neighboring communities by having a downtown at the heart of the community, and the village is committed to expanding and developing more of the downtown area. The enhanced downtown will serve as Round Lake’s central gathering location while boasting some of its most desirable retail and dining establishments and services for the greater Round Lake area. The village hosts annual National Night Out, Arbor Day and Holiday Tree Lighting events for the community. The Round Lake Area Farmers Market takes place in downtown each July-September. Round Lake is steeped in history and surrounded with opportunity. The village is geared toward growth and development, while celebrating and promoting its unique identity. Mayor Dan MacGillis and the Round Lake Village Board invite you to experience the best options for housing, education, recreation, businesses and transit.

Round Lake Heights

Round Lake Heights is just one step north of Round Lake Beach, and just two steps north of Round Lake. Unlike its neighbors, Round Lake Heights doesn’t actually rest on a lake, but the small village still plays an important role in the identity and community of the Round Lake Area. In 1960, Round Lake Heights succeeded in incorporating. It began with cheap real estate that followed the close of World War II. A Chicago company, L.B. Harris, began selling properties for about $3 per week. The price attracted a lot of attention, and construction of the future Round Lake Heights began. Because arrowheads were found on the land, folks called the area “Indian Hill” as it was built. The original residents of the Round Lake Heights area were likely indigenous people – though “original ownership” is officially credited to Frank and Antionette Grenus. Once built, Round Lake Heights faced a somewhat controversial incorporation, failing to secure votes twice before changing strategies and pushing harder for necessities like access to clean water. After the victory was secured, village officials created a police station and set speed limits along with a whole slew of necessary places and programs. Efforts have continued steadily since then, showing a growth in population and an everincreasing supply of resources for the village. Terry Lumpkins has been Mayor for Round Lake Heights for over 26 years, and as both a longtime resident and village leader, he has accomplished a great deal. Round Lake Heights has built two new subdivisions and has no debt, in comparison to other towns in Illinois. 6

Round Lake Park

In the midst of America’s Roaring 20s, a Chicago businessman named Louis B. Harris purchased the land that is now Round Lake Park. On it, he built summer homes that captured the natural beauty of the region. As time passed, more and more people began settling in the area, and the summer homes became permanent homes, requiring sewer services and running water. Due to this increase in population, the village of Round Lake Park was incorporated in 1947 under Mayor Stuart McKecknie. Getting the town up to par on municipal sewer and water services was the first order of business. Currently, Mayor Linda Lucassen runs Round Lake Park, always striving to hold true to the town motto: “Proud past, unlimited future.” The village website also boasts: “Round Lake Park Illinois is nestled at the crossroads of central Lake County. We thrive on providing the best possible services to our residents, businesses, and visitors while maintaining fiscal integrity and strong management. We celebrate a proud history, natural beauty, and diversity.” The humble village is just over 2 square miles in area, providing homes for a population of over 7,000 people. A stroll through Round Lake Park might introduce you to a few of them, especially at places like Main Street Cafe, The Pizza Place, Groot, R& M Auto and American Legion.

Hainesville

Hainesville’s claim to fame is that it is oldest village in Lake County. In the early 1800s, the land was purchased by Elijah M. Haines. The New York school teacher surveyed and plotted Hainesville, leading to its incorporation in 1847. Haines later served as a member of the Illinois Constitutional Convention and rubbed elbows with Abraham Lincoln, as his village grew and prospered. Another school-teacher-turned-mayor is Gerry Daley, current mayor and longtime leader in Hainesville. The village today covers no more than 2 square miles of land, but the population has boomed throughout the last decade, now sitting at over 3,5000. Also in the last decade, Union Square, Cranberry Lake North, Cranberry Lake, Misty Hill Farms and Deerpoint Trails have been added to Hainesville. Schools and sports are prevalent in the village, which is served by Grayslake Elementary School District #46, Round Lake Unit School District #116, and Grayslake High School District #127. It is home to the Avon Township Youth Baseball Organization and Northbrook Sports Club, plus parks, playgrounds, a bike path and the federally-protected Cranberry Lake Reserve. Some local businesses include Beer Bazaar, Bento Cafe, Gold Solutions and Rep It Print Shoppe. Hainesville also hosts annual events like Village-Wide Clean Up, Civil War reenactments, VillageWide Garage Sale and Halloween Trick or Treating and Hayrides. 2020-2021 ❙ Community Guide

COMMUNITY PROFILES Round Lake Beach

Settlers first came to the Round Lake Beach area in the mid-1800s. A larger influx arrived in the early 1900s – mostly from the city of Chicago – to enjoy summer fun in and around the lake, thanks to the recently invented automobile. It wasn’t until Chicago real estate developer L.B. Harris saw the potential for new development along the lake that the population really took off. He started offering basic summer cottages and then promoted year-round homes in the 1930s. The village was incorporated in 1937, and more residents flocked to the area after World War II. By the early 1960s, Round Lake Beach was the most populous area in western Lake County, with more than 6,000 residents. In the years following, Round Lake Beach annexed land up to Monaville Road and saw residential and significant commercial growth. In 1996, the village’s train station officially opened and is on Metra’s North Central Service. Today’s Round Lake Beach offers quite a bit to its residents, including: Excellent school districts, such as Round Lake Area School District 116, Lake Villa Grade School District 41, Lake Villa High School District 117, Grayslake Grade School District 46, Grayslake Community High School District 127 and Grant Community High School. Public recreational spaces and activities through the Round Lake Area Park District. The Round Lake Beach Cultural and Civic Center, a multi-use facility that plays host to many cultural and entertainment events and provides indoor and outdoor spaces. The Free Summer Concert series and Family Fun Fridays are a couple of highlights in the yearly event schedule. Outstanding public services through the county, village, fire protection district, township and local library districts. And, of course, the lake is always a top attraction. Lakefront Park is a yearround gathering place, although the official season is Memorial Day to Labor Day. Residents and visitors enjoy the boat launch, picnic shelters, playground and the sandy beach.

EDUCATION Chamber Scholarships

The Round Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to offer a scholarship program to the Greater Round Lake Area. Thanks to our generous member sponsors, we have awarded between 19 and 24 scholarships to area high school seniors over the past several years. Our scholarship applicants live in the Round Lake Area and attend one of the following high schools: Round Lake, Grayslake Central, Grayslake North, Grant or Carmel. Round Lake School District 116

This pre-K-12 school district on Nippersink Road is a staple of the Round Lake area. Approximately 7,300 students attend the district, guided by around 950 staff members dedicated to serving students across Round Lake, Round Lake Beach, Round Lake Heights, Round Lake Park and Hainesville. Its mission is to “Ensure Educational Excellence for Everyone,” according to the district website. The district fulfills this mission “by creating standards-based curricula with common assessments and using correctives and enrichments to push students further in their achievement.” The district creates “a culture of collaboration by establishing a specific time and set of expectations for teachers to work together to discuss student learning where everyone brings something to the team. Our focus is on results! We create a system for data analysis which encourages teachers to work together to find solutions to increase student achievement for all.”

Grant High School District 124

Grant Community High School’s mission is to “educate each and every student to be a responsible and productive citizen who will be

able to effectively manage future challenges,” according to its website. The school provides students with the opportunity “to develop intellectually, emotionally and physically in a safe and supportive environment.” This Fox Lake school on East Grand Avenue was established in 1930. It encompasses about 2,000 students in grades 9-12, and the school only continues to grow. Shortly after major renovations in 2011, Superintendent Christine A. Sefcik, Ed.D. joined the Grant Bulldogs and took the reins, guiding Grant Community High School to future academic and athletic success.

Grayslake Community High School District 127

Grayslake Community High School District 127 consists of Grayslake Central and Grayslake North high schools. Both are four-year comprehensive programs seeking to “empower all learners to launch their futures through relevant,

engaging, authentic learning.” The Grayslake North Knights attend a school of approximately 1,400 students under the direction of Principal James P. Roscoe, Ed.D. The Central Rams have a similar headcount, and they are guided by Principal Daniel Landry; Superintendent Mikkel Storaasli, Ed.D. manages both. According to the district website, 127 is recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education and is a member of the College Board and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. It has a reputation of academic excellence, and each high school has been recognized by the Washington Post for achievement and difficulty.

College of Lake County

When the College of Lake County first opened its doors to students in 1969, the community college welcomed just over 2,000 young learners. Today, around 18,000 students attend the school each semester. The College of Lake County has come a long way from being gifted land to build on and charging just $7 per semester hour; the school is now thriving, with the last decade alone bringing a rebrand, new campus construction and the addition of Dr. Lori M. Suddick as president. The college has Grayslake, Lakeshore and Southlake campuses to reach people in need of degrees, transfers, GEDs, non-credit offerings and contract training. The mission of the College of Lake County strives to be “a comprehensive community college committed to equitable high-quality education, cultural enrichment and partnerships to advance the diverse communities it serves.”

he Round Lake Area Public Library provides current information, formal education support, independent learning opportunities, and life enrichment materials to a highly diverse public in a warm and welcoming atmosphere through a highly trained team of individuals committed to quality service, who will nurture a love for reading and learning by fostering lifelong learning. Parents are encouraged to visit the Round Lake Area Public Library and make sure their children and teens sign up for the most important school supply of all – a library card, a key resource in achieving academic success. The library is also the perfect place to spend quality family time together. The library strives to provide inclusive programs and experiences for all individuals, people of all ages and abilities. Last year, the library presented over 900 programs, including bilingual English and Spanish programs. From cooking programs to bilingual story-time, the library aims to provide offerings that meet the interests and needs of the community. By making the library a destination, residents will discover fun programs and educational resources. The library is your source for tools, laptops, and equipment to make your ideas come to life. The newest addition to the library is the X-lab, a workspace where people with an interest in technology and crafts can bring their creations to life. The lab is available to vistors age 13 and older. Children under 13 must be accompanied by a person 16 years or older to be in The X-lab. You can even visit the library from the comfort of your home with free online resources. With your Round Lake library card, there are plenty of ways the library can come to you. The library’s many digital library, books, movies, magazines and learning opportunities are all at your fingertips. Use them for your research, learning and information needs. The library offers a variety of resources for homework help, finding a tutor, researching a topic for a paper or project, resume help or practicing for your SATs or ACTs.

ROUND LAKE AREA PARK DISTRICT

he Round Lake Area Park District is dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles through recreation programs, facilities and open spaces. The district, which was established in 1974, serves the communities of Round Lake, Round Lake Beach, Round Lake Heights, Round Lake Park and Hainesville. With the overall wellness of residents at the forefront, the park district offers more than 2,000 annual programs and 74 park sites to meet the needs of the Round Lake community. Residents have access to several top-notch facilities. The 50,000-squarefoot Sports Center features an adult-sized, regulation indoor soccer field, a regulation basketball/volleyball court and a 9,000-square-foot mezzanine. Renwood Golf Course has an 18-hole course, a driving range and practice green, a Skytrak Golf Simulator and a clubhouse with bar and grill. The Aquatics Center pool holds over 200,000 gallons of water for summer use, and a state- of-the-art splash pad provides hours of fun. The pool has a diving board and gets as deep as 12.5 feet for more experienced swimmers. The Robert W. Rolek Community Center serves as headquarters for the administration and is home to an 11-room Child Development Center, a gymnasium, dance studio, senior center and a 2,700-square-foot multipurpose room. The Special Recreation Service of Northern Lake County Center provides a variety of programs, including a TODAY Club for those 18 and older, an After-School Club, bowling and soccer, as well as art, cooking and fitness classes.

Hart’s Woods Challenge Course’s activities involve mental and physical challenges that can only be resolved through teamwork and cooperation. Challenge Course programs are professionally designed to help each group reach specific goals and objectives. Consider park district facilities for hosting your next get-together – whether a child’s birthday party, family reunion, Scout activity or club celebration. The park district also offers programs for every age and interest. Have small children? Check out parent-tot classes; visit its fun Children’s Neighborhood Museum; sign up for preschool or child care; or explore the Prairie Grass Nature Museum. Have an active child? Try Jelly Bean sports classes for the little ones; skills clinics for older kids; boxing, karate, baseball, softball, swimming, gymnastics, basketball, soccer, golf, baton twirling or dance classes. Beforeand after-school programs also are offered. Have a creative child? Encourage them to audition for the park district Theatre Company. There’s plenty for adults, too. Play a round at the golf course; canoe or kayak at Huebner Shores Park; play in the Community Band; take an exercise class at the Community Center; or join a volleyball league. Are you 50-plus? Join our Senior Center – have lunch on Tuesdays, Bingo on Wednesdays, Creativity Club on Thursdays or Game Day on Fridays. Or take an Active Adult activity – from yoga and walking club, to stitching or seeing a movie. Whatever the season, the park district offers fun for all ages. In the winter, slide down our sled hill or skate on an outdoor rink. In the summer, visit the pool or sign up for summer camp. Throughout the year, the park district offers special events including Beachfest Fireworks, Family Fishing, Great Pumpkin Celebration, A Night with the Grinch, Frosty Footrace 5K, Daddy Daughter Night, Egg Scramble, Earth Day Celebration and Go Round Lake walks.
