Pekin is the seat of Tazewell County and is rich with river bluffs, rolling hills, mature woods and several manmade lakes – all providing the community with a rich, rooted look and endless opportunities.

TRANSPORTATION

Conveniently located just 165 miles northeast of St. Louis and 163 miles southwest of Chicago, Pekin has access to all modes of transportation available including major roadways, air, rail and water.

ROAD

Pekin businesses have one-day trucking access to markets throughout the Midwest. Three interstates (I-74, I-474 and I-155) and

seven major highways serve the local and intrastate carriers that operate in the region.

AIR

Air travelers and freight shippers have easy access to the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport, just nine miles from downtown Pekin. The airport offers free parking and four commercial airlines that operate daily flights to 10 of the nation’s major hubs and getaway destinations including Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Destin, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Mesa, Orlando, Punta Gorda and St. Petersburg. Less than an hour away, the Central Illinois Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal also offers easy, low-cost travel from four commercial airlines providing non-stop service to seven major hubs and vacation destinations. The Pekin Municipal Airport has a 5,000foot lighted runway, private storage and maintenance and fuel facilities.

RAIL & RIVER

Several railroad companies use the tracks that run through the Pekin area, with piggyback and container services just five miles from town. Using the Illinois River, barges hauling heavy grain and products to and from Pekin access the nation’s waterways all year long.

CLIMATE

The annual mean temperature is 51.3 degrees, with July averaging 75.7 degrees and January averaging 23.8 degrees. Average annual precipitation is 35.2 inches, with an average annual snowfall totaling 25 inches.

ESTABLISHED LEADERSHIP | The Root of Pekin Tradition HISTORY

Robert de La Salle, with a fleet of canoes and 33 men, is believed to be one of the first European explorers to visit the Pekin area. In 1680 his crew constructed a winter refuge in what is now the southeast quarter of section one in Pekin Township. Although travelers and Native Americans frequented the area, it was not until the summer of 1824 that Jonathon Tharp built a small log cabin on the high east bank of the Illinois River and encouraged his father, friends and other family members to follow him. The local Native American residents, the Pottawatomi Indians and their chief Shawubena were friendly toward these settlers. With a population of 1,500 the city incorporated and received its city charter in 1849.

CITY GOVERNMENT

The city government operates under the managerial form of municipal government, with a seven-person city council consisting of a mayor and six council members, all elected at-large to four-year terms. The city council appoints a professional city manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the city, composed of over 300 full- and part-time employees and an approximate budget of $62 million.

CITY SERVICES AND PROJECTS

The City of Pekin provides a number of services aimed at improving the quality of life of residents, businesses and visitors. They include:  Public safety services through full-time police and fire departments that protect life and property.  Building inspections and code enforcement to maintain the health and safety of our community.  Weekly curbside solid waste, recycling and yard waste collection.

 Road maintenance and repair.  Snow removal on designated snow routes.  Economic development and tourism efforts to attract new investment in the community.  Public transportation services offered through CityLink.  Availability of a municipal airport for leisure or business.  Bus transportation for area school children in collaboration with school districts.  Wastewater collection and treatment.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Founded in 1860, the Pekin Fire Department is staffed by 52 full-time firefighters. Responding from three stations located across the city, the department is an all hazards response organization that includes fire suppression, fire prevention, emergency medical services and technical rescue, as well as hazardous materials response and code enforcement. The Pekin Fire Department provides community education including fire extinguisher and CPR classes, fire investigation and youth fire setter intervention. The Pekin Fire Department helps keep citizens safe by conducting annual fire inspection activities of local businesses and manufacturing facilities, as well as providing hazardous materials response at the technician level, high angle rescue, confined space rescue and trench rescue. Due to the proximity to the Illinois River and numerous area lakes and ponds, the fire department also provides surface water rescue. The Pekin Fire Department retains an ISO rating of 3, and covers the City of Pekin as well as the Powerton and Brush Hill Fire Protection Districts. All three districts come together for a response area of approximately 45 square miles. Pekin Fire Department provides advanced

emergency medical response, with 51 of the 52 personnel holding the State of Illinois EMT intermediate or paramedic level licenses.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

Pekin citizens feel safe knowing they are protected by a progressive police department composed of 54 officers and a K9 officer named Bas. The police department has several divisions including patrol, investigations, a narcotics unit and the Central Illinois Emergency Response Team (SWAT team). The department also fosters community relations with outreach programs like Cops for Kids, Night Out Against Crime and Shop with a Hero (for Christmas shopping). Additionally, officers volunteer their time year-round to raise money for Special Olympics. The Pekin Police Department places a strong focus on crime prevention and educating citizens with tips to protect themselves against crime. The city’s low crime rate is a direct reflection of the department’s commitment to the safety of Pekin.

COUNTY OFFICES

Pekin has served as the county seat for Tazewell County (population 133,526) since 1849. As the hub of county government, Pekin hosts the state’s attorneys’ offices, the sheriff ’s office and the Tazewell County Justice Center. Many other county offices are in downtown Pekin, including the regional superintendent of schools, county clerk & recorder, county treasurer and county coroner.

STATE OFFICES

The Illinois Secretary of State Driver’s License Facility and the Illinois Department of Human Services are two of the state agencies with offices in Pekin. Our state legislators also have local offices in Pekin.

EMPOWERING POSSIBILITY THROUGH INDUSTRY A Hard-Working Community Pekin is rooted within a large and growing central Illinois industrial sector. The Pekin-Peoria Metropolitan Service Area, with a population of nearly 380,000, is home to a number of industries. One of our area’s largest employers is Caterpillar, Inc. Several of their local facilities are located near Pekin.

INDUSTRIAL/MANUFACTURING

Pekin has a solid base of industrial and manufacturing jobs of its own. In fact, 19% of Pekin residents are employed in the manufacturing industry. One of our largest industrial employers in Pekin is Pacific Ethanol – a leading producer of ethanol and a fully integrated producer of ingredients and distillery products. Other large industrial employers in Pekin include Tazewell Machine Works, Excel Foundry and Machine and NRG Energy.

RIVERWAY BUSINESS PARK: LIGHT INDUSTRY

Situated on the south side of Pekin, Riverway Business Park is home to several light industrial manufacturers including Hanna Steel, Elecsys, Excalibur Seasoning, PAL Health Technology, EnviroSafe Refrigerants, Wheelworx and Winpak. Other businesses located in the Riverway Business Park include Amerhart, the south campus of Illinois Central College and the FCI Pekin – a medium/minimum-security federal correctional facility.

PRODUCTION & FABRICATION

A number of tool, pattern, machining and fabrication shops are also based in the Pekin area. Other products originating in our area include industrial gases, agricultural chemicals and fertilizers, paperboard, aluminum castings, field seed and hybrid corn.

Serving approximately 3,700 students on 11 campuses, District 108 is acknowledged throughout Illinois as a high-quality school system for students in preschool through eighth grade. Employees in the district have been recognized locally and at the state level for quality in teaching and learning. The district values training, using it to encourage both individual and organizational innovation and excellence. The district also values customer feedback, using it to guide improvement efforts. Student performance in reading, writing and mathematics rates above achievement goals set by the State of Illinois as reflected in school report cards. Students demonstrate extracurricular success by capturing state and world competition titles (band, Suzuki orchestra, Scholastic Bowl, athletics, Destination Imagination and Young Authors). College prep students will also find a variety of advanced placement, dual-credit and early college courses that help prepare them for entrance into selective universities. Career and Technical Education courses prepare youth for a wide range of careers, from child care, registered nursing, business, culinary arts, imaging, engineering, JROTC, computer technician, to manufacturing and construction. The CTE program provides students with college dual credit, advanced placement, certification, or the background to easily transition into a career or post-high school training and education. The school offers 56 CTE courses taught by 20 qualified teachers. The extensive number of extracurricular programs and diverse, rigorous curricula allow students to excel in the classroom and beyond. PCHS students have the option to participate in more than 20 interscholastic sports and more than 25 other clubs and activities. Students also have earned national recognition in band, choral music and speech/debate. The school is represented in many state and national level competitions every year. higher education is within easy commuting distance.  Just across the river in Peoria, you’ll find Bradley University, the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Robert Morris College and two four-year nursing colleges.  Illinois Central College, a two-year community college, enables students to reach their educational potential and serves as a resource for the educational and cultural needs of the community. ICC has three area campuses, including one in Pekin, and offers student housing at its East Peoria location.  There are at least 10 additional colleges, universities and institutions of higher learning within a 45-minute drive of Pekin.

Pekin parents also have access to several excellent parochial elementary schools as an alternative to public education. They include Faith Baptist Christian School, Good Shepherd Lutheran School, St. Joseph Catholic School and Tomorrow’s Hope Christian Academy. These schools each offer a well-rounded education program based on a religious foundation. Pekin is also home to a number of high-quality, licensed preschool and child-care centers.

INSPIRING FUN ... CLOSE TO HOME A Network of Indoor & Outdoor Recreation PEKIN PARK DISTRICT

Ask anyone who lives in or visits Pekin what they remember the most, and it’s likely they’ll say, “the parks.” Since 1902 the Pekin Park District has been providing park and recreational opportunities to the community. The park district’s 17 parks encompass 2,280 acres of land, making it one of the largest park districts in the state. Most of the acreage is in four parks on the outskirts of Pekin, which have been mostly preserved in their natural beauty. Mineral Springs Park: Located in the heart of the city, Mineral Springs Park is the showpiece of the park district encompassing

220 acres. Home to a beautiful pavilion that sits on a man-made lagoon where you can take a paddle boat ride, Mineral Springs Park is also the home of Parkside Athletics (an indoor fitness and tennis/pickleball facility), Veterans Memorial Arena (that includes an indoor ice rink in the winter months), DragonLand Water Park, Magic Dragon Mini-Golf, the Miller Senior Center, Happy Tails Dog Park, the World’s Greatest Sundial and the Sunken Gardens Fountain. There is also a playground for ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12, outdoor tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic shelters, a skate park, ball diamonds, access to the Pekin Bike Trail and Sunday evening Pekin Concert

and horseback riding. Non-preserved areas within these parks include an archery range, radio controlled airfield for model airplanes, 18-hole disc golf course, Soldwedel Program Center and Rockin’ P. Riding Ranch. Pekin Park Sports Complex: This 80-acre complex features 12 ball diamonds for baseball and softball. The soccer area can accommodate up to 10 separate fields, depending on the age group. There are also four football fields, restrooms and concession facilities, a 1.6-mile walking path, two playgrounds and parking for 500 cars.
