he Mequon-Thiensville community is an outstanding place to live and a wonderful destination to visit. The population of Mequon is approximately 24,000 people. Thiensville, a self-governed, one-square-mile village completely surrounded by Mequon, is home to about 3,200. The community prides itself on having a top-performing school district, quality private and higher educational institutions, an exceptional library, thriving business regions and an industrial park area. Comprehensive health care can be conveniently accessed due to many state-of-the-art medical and wellness clinics located in the area. In addition to the many unique shopping and dining districts, residents and visitors can enjoy the vast natural areas, scenic rural landscapes and numerous spacious parks available. Mequon is situated on the beautiful shore of Lake Michigan and both Mequon and Thiensville are located along the winding Milwaukee River, offering extraordinary views and recreational opportunities. Outdoor enthusiasts can also experience the splendor of the expansive Mequon Nature Preserve and the scenic Ozaukee Interurban Trail. Mequon Th iensville HISTORY T

he City of Mequon and the Village of Thiensville share a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century when adventurers began to trap and trade with the Potawatami and Menomonie tribes living along the Milwaukee River. By the mid-1830s, many of the early explorers began to build and settle in this area, which was designated as the Town of Mequon in 1836. Not long thereafter, Thiensville saw its beginning when John Henry Thien, a German immigrant, traveled along the Milwaukee River looking for a new home. He and his wife settled near the Native American village known as Mequon Sippi in 1842 and began building a dam to provide water power for a grist mill and saw mill. As more and more immigrants found their way to the area, the community began to thrive. Mequon became an official township in 1846, and town meetings were held at Thien’s home. Though Thiensville was, and still is, entirely surrounded by the town of Mequon, it remained unincorporated until 1910 when it officially became the Village of Thiensville with a population of 289. Both Mequon and Thiensville flourished throughout the early 20th century, and in 1957, the Town of Mequon became the City of Mequon. The area has grown greatly since its beginning, but it still remembers and honors the culture and history that made it what it is today. The story of early settlers can be learned through our community’s array of historical sites and organizations: The Thiensville Historic Preservation Commission, which oversees the Main Street and Green Bay Road historic districts, offers a walking tour booklet that describes the history and architecture of the heart of the village. Mequon’s west side, offers a unique historic village and records of their community dating back to 1839. The Jonathan Clark House Museum is a unique architectural and historical treasure in the community. The beautiful 1848 Greek Revival home is open for tours by appointment and hosts several community events each year. Museum The Mequon River Postal Museum, maintained by the MT Historical Society, is the newest intriguing historical site to be established in the community. The museum, which opened in 2019, is located in the historical Isham Day House and tells the fascinating stories of former postmasters and local community leaders who worked out of the two-room house that once operated as a post office. One room features the photos and stories of the early postmasters and the second room houses the Stamp Gallery.

COMMUNITY FESTIVALS& EVENTS

everal events held throughout the year in Mequon and Thiensville provide wonderful opportunities for visitors and community members to enjoy music, food and special activities together. WINTER FROLIC offers a wide range of outdoor activities such as sleigh rides, snow shoeing, ice fishing, chainsaw carvings and bonfires. The annual festival is held on the expansive grounds of the Mequon Nature Preserve.

LIONFEST is an annual threeday event held in Thiensville Village Park. Weekend festival fun for all ages includes The Lions Famous Rotisserie Chicken Dinner, live music, carnival rides, a softball tournament, car show and bingo. Proceeds from this event are donated to charities.

FAMILY FUN BEFORE THE FOURTH is a popular annual community event held on the Saturday before the Fourth of July. The celebration begins with a lively parade in the morning followed by free ice cream at Thiensville Village Park. Participants can enjoy various food vendors and an array of entertainment in the park all day. The event ends in the evening with live music followed by fantastic fireworks at dusk.

POMMERNTAG, an outdoor ethnic festival celebrating German culture held at Rotary Park, features lively music, dancing, German beer, and ethnic food such as rollbraten, herring, brats, red cabbage, cherry soup and black forest cherry tortes. The event promotes a feeling of GemĂźtlichkeit that is interwoven with Mequon-Thiensvilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history. Cultural exhibits and genealogy research are also available for attendees. GATHERING ON THE GREEN is a premier outdoor performing arts festival that takes place on a Friday and Saturday evening in July at the scenic Rotary Park. The concerts

feature exceptional entertainment, attracting popular national touring bands and artists. In addition, community members can get involved and have a chance at performing in the event’s Battle of the Bands competition. Revenue from the concerts supports Gathering on the Green’s year-round Music Together concerts, clinics and scholarships fulfilling its mission of Bridging Communities through Music. ANNUAL SUBURBAN BLOCK FEST is a day-long celebration of live music, entertainment beer and food, running from 9 a.m. to midnight. Held on a Saturday in July, the festival also includes Vendor Village, a Cornhole Tournament and Biker Bingo. Suburban Motors, the local Harley Davidson dealer in Thiensville, sponsors the event, however, it’s not just for motorcycle enthusiasts. TASTE OF MEQUON, an annual free street festival held in September, features delicious food prepared by area restaurants, live music and booths exhibiting the work of local artists. It’s a great opportunity to explore the elements that make this community a great place to live, and to visit with family, friends and neighbors. The festival also includes numerous activities for children. THE TURKEY TROT AND GOBBLE GALLOP is held on Thanksgiving morning in Thiensville Village Park. More than 1,500 runners and walkers participate in a 5K Run/Walk through the scenic Village of Thiensville and a 50-meter dash for children ages 10 and younger. The Junior Woman’s Club of Mequon-Thiensville organizes this annual event, and proceeds benefit numerous charitable and community organizations. THIENSVILLE VILLAGE MARKET is held every Tuesday from June to October at Thiensville Village Park. This bustling village market features an array of locally grown fresh produce, specialty products, luncheon vendors and music.

Recreation O utdoor enthusiasts will enjoy numerous recreation opportunities in Mequon and Thiensville. The community is filled with hiking and biking trails, golf courses and scenic parks that provide fun activities in beautiful natural settings. The Milwaukee River meandering through the two communities offers opportunities for fishing, boating, canoeing and kayaking. The Rotary Riverwalk provides scenic views of the river along a path for hiking and walking.

 MEQUON NATURE PRESERVE

The Mequon Nature Preserve, an expansive natural habitat for plants and wildlife, encompasses 438 acres of land offering five miles of hiking trails amid forests, wetlands and fields, a 50-foot observation tower and an education center. A facet of the preserve’s mission is to restore the land to pre-European settlement conditions. The preserve is known for two Wisconsin firsts: cultivating a rice paddy, a project conducted by a Marquette University professor, and adding an on-site conservation dog to its staff. Tilia, an English Field Labrador, sniffs out salamanders, wild parsnip and other invasive plants. She helps to monitor animal species and eradicate unwanted plants, which is on the cutting edge of conservation science.

& Attractions  OZAUKEE INTERURBAN TRAIL

The Ozaukee Interurban Trail begins in Mequon and spans across Ozaukee County. A free-tothe-public paved path, the trail is designated as a Great Wisconsin Birding Trail. Visitors enjoy picturesque views of the Milwaukee River, Lake Michigan, Cedar Creek, wetlands, forests and farmland all while biking, running or walking. In the winter, the northern portion of the trail is open for cross country skiing. Trail users can stop along the way at exceptional communities throughout Ozaukee County. In Mequon, the path runs adjacent to various restaurants and shopping and dining centers including the River Centre, the Mequon Public Market and Mequon Town Center. In Thiensville, the trail is situated alongside Main Street, with easy access to many restaurants, stores and a bike shop.

 THIENSVILLE VILLAGE PARK

Thiensville Village Park, a spacious park situated along the Milwaukee River, is considered Thiensville’s crown jewel. It serves as the site for multiple community events, the weekly Village Market held from June through October, and the monthly summer Food Truck Tour gatherings. The park features a covered pavilion, boat launch, fishing, tennis courts, softball and baseball fields and the Rotary Riverwalk trail. Parents wishing to enroll their children in private schools may choose from the University School of Milwaukee, Lumen Christi Catholic School or Christ Alone Lutheran School. The University School of Milwaukee provides college preparatory education to students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The school has been nationally recognized as one of the top independent schools in the country. Lumen Christi Catholic School provides quality Catholic faith-based education to students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Christ Alone Lutheran School is an accredited K- 8 elementary school that offers an education interwoven with Christian lessons. Students looking to stay close to home for higher education will find excellent opportunities at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) or Concordia University Wisconsin with campuses located right in Mequon. An important part of the north suburban community, Milwaukee Area Technical College – Mequon Campus is located in a scenic yet convenient area for students. Many students start their bachelor’s degrees through the technical college’s liberal arts and sciences programs. They take classes for two years at the Mequon campus, and 20

then transfer their credits to four-year colleges and universities. Because many other MATC students fit in college and continuing education around their current jobs and family responsibilities, a number of accelerated associate degree programs, in which students can attend class one evening each week, are offered year-round. Students seeking technical diplomas and associate degrees can graduate in one to two years; those working toward a certificate can finish in as few as four months. Situated on the beautiful shoreline of Lake Michigan in Mequon, Concordia University Wisconsin is a four-year, NCA-accredited, coeducational, liberal arts school offering a Christian–based education. It serves traditional undergraduate and graduate students as well as adult learners through accelerated and online courses. Undergraduate students can select from over 70 majors that are structured into six schools: Arts & Sciences, Education, Nursing, Business, Health Profession and Pharmacy. New to the campus in 2019 is the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center, a 41,000-square-foot, state-of-the art facility housing the Batterman School of Business. Shoppers can experience an array of unique, independently owned stores and specialty shops or several larger national stores. Whether shopping for pleasure, special gifts or for practical items, shoppers’ needs will be met. Thiensville’s downtown area features retail stores, galleries, art studios, restaurants and coffee houses. In addition,

the Thiensville Business Association hosts an outstanding Farmer’s Market at Village Park every Tuesday from June through October. Upscale boutiques, specialty shops and other popular stores can be found in one of the many shopping plazas in the business districts located near the intersection of Mequon Road and Port Washington Road on the eastern side of Mequon, just off of Interstate 43. The wide assortment of shopping venues clustered together in the area offers a convenient shopping experience.

neighborhood along the Milwaukee River for both the Mequon and Thiensville communities. The town center development was quickly followed by another larger mixed-use project, developed by Shaffer Development, known as Spur 16. The 13.9-acre development at 6300 W. Mequon Rd., named for the site’s historic railroad spur, is now home to 146 apartments, 10 townhomes and over a dozen businesses, including Mequon’s 11,000-square-foot Public Market. The retail spaces have adaptively re-used existing 1940s-era industrial buildings, previously owned by the City of Mequon, that now include restaurants, coffee and ice cream shops and health facilities. There is even outdoor space for weekend farmers markets, concerts and art events. One standalone in Spur 16 is St. Paul Fish Company at 6200 W. Mequon Rd. The all-brick, 5,400-square-foot building was remodeled as a fish market and sit-down restaurant. Since opening in mid-2019, it has quickly become a go-to place for fresh seafood and fish. Anyone seeking high-end apartment or townhome living will have multiple choices in Mequon. The Spur 16 development offers townhomes tucked among mature, tree-lined streets or amenitypacked “smart” apartments in the new three three-story apartment unit buildings. Other new apartments buildings were also recently constructed in the new Town Center area offering additional

opportunities for upscale apartment living: The Reserve in Mequon on Mequon Road and Artesa Apartments off of Mequon Road on Buntrock Avenue. Across from Spur 16 is the new 17-acre Foxtown development. The project will be developed methodically over the course of three years and will include luxury apartments, quality crafted single-family homes by Lakeside Development, a variety of restaurants and a one-of-akind historic brewery by Tom Nieman. This project, which is being spearheaded by a consortium that includes Foxtown Center, LLC, P2 Development and Lakeside Development, will transform what were once blighted, deteriorating or vacant properties into another substantial and vital expansion of the Town Center neighborhood. Foxtown Brewery, which was one of the first planned businesses in this development, will take up residence in a historic brewery building that dates back to the mid-1800s. The 12,211-square-foot structure is one of the oldest surviving brewing facilities in southeastern Wisconsin. It also boasts some of the area’s last remaining underground caves used for aging and storing beer.

equon & Thiensville have strong religious roots that were established by the earliest settlers. The first residents were made up of predominantly Pomeranian German and Irish immigrants practicing the Lutheran and Catholic religions. Their faith was an integral part of their daily lives. In fact, in 1839, approximately 20 families established the colony of Freistadt, now a part of Mequon, and immediately purchased 40 acres of land to build the first Lutheran church in the state of Wisconsin. The first church was a small log cabin. The present stone church, Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church-Freistadt, was built in 1884. Today many expressions of faith can be found in Mequon and Thiensville. Residents and visitors will find more than 20 churches and synagogues of different denominations that offer worship services, religious education, faith-based programs and community activities. A number of congregations operate religious schools and day care centers. Many offer educational sessions, concerts, and festivals encouraging participation and connection beyond their parishioners. The diversity of faiths and the welcoming outreach to all of the community members enriches the quality of life.
