ARTISTIC ASSET Historical society adds original Sheldon Peck painting to its collection Not many communities can point to a renowned artist as their founding father, but Lombard can and the Lombard Historical Society recently purchased one of his works of art for display in his home.

Sheldon Peck was a self-taught, mid-19th century itinerant folk art-style master portrait painter. His home, Lombard’s oldest house, was constructed in 1839 and is still located at 355 E. Parkside Ave., at the corner of Parkside and Grace. It was not only a home to his large family, but also the first school in the area, a stop on the Underground Railroad and the place where he sometimes painted.

Today it is home to Peck family memorabilia and furnishings, as well as to Sheldon Peck’s “Portrait of a Woman,” which he painted around 1828 when the family still lived in Vermont. Like many Peck paintings, it is an almost translucent oil painting, created on wood.

It wasn’t until years later that he progressed to doing a few paintings on canvas.

“Unfortunately, we have no idea who the woman in the painting was, but we hope to one day figure it out – maybe with the help of family photos posted on Ancestry.com,” said Sarah Richardt, executive director of the Lombard Historical Society. “She is in her late 20s or early 30s with brown hair in barrel curls which is largely covered by a bonnet. She is wearing a black dress with a white lace shawl and a brooch and she is surrounded by a stark, dark background.

“It is stylistically typical of Sheldon Peck’s work with vivid color and texture and for many years, it undoubtedly hung in obscurity in someone’s house,” she added.

UNUSUAL COLLECTION EXHIBITED

In 2019, the Society held a several-month exhibit of 15 of Peck’s highly-sought-after originals, borrowed from museums and private collectors across the country. Folk art lovers from all over the country made a pilgrimage to Lombard to see the house and view the unusual collection of artwork, Richardt said.

“Halfway through the exhibit, I received a call from Randall Merta, an Americana artwork

dealer from Westminster, Massachusetts, who told me that he had a Peck painting that he would be happy to loan us for the exhibit.

But it was too late, and I declined,” Richardt recalled.

“But I checked out both him – and the painting – and called back, asking if he was interested in selling it. He had bought it at Christie’s five years before and said that he would sell it to us for his purchase price since it would be going into a museum,” she added.

Richardt and the Historical Society Board chose to take out a loan and purchase the painting, feeling that it would add immeasurably to the museum. Previously, they had only had reproductions of Peck’s work on hand, as well as originals done by his son, Charles, who was eventually one of the founders of the Chicago Art Institute, and his daughter, Susan.

The exciting new acquisition was hung in the Peck house in February.

“Since we purchased this fabulous painting, we have also been approached by two other owners of Peck originals but they were too expensive for us. Maybe someday we will be able to acquire more of Sheldon’s works,” Richardt said.

‘A NATURALLY GIFTED ARTIST’

There are currently 130 known Sheldon Peck paintings in existence, most of which hang in the homes of their descendants, collectors and nationally-significant museums, she noted. “He was a naturally-gifted artist of innate talent and vision who was undoubtedly influenced by artist William Jennys of Connecticut. While in New York, he developed a social consciousness about slavery, in particular, which he then brought with him to Illinois. In fact, I would call him an 1840s hippie.”

Peck and his wife, Harriet, brought their family to Lombard (then known as Babcock’s Grove) from New York in 1837, shortly after the end of the Blackhawk War, in an oxenpulled covered wagon. They reportedly lived in the wagon for two years while they built their home (which still stands).

The Pecks had been encouraged to make the trek by former New York residents – the Churchills of Glen Ellyn (whose land was taken by imminent domain to build the Erie Canal). They had followed Harriet’s family, first to Jordan, New York and then to Illinois.

Unfortunately, Sheldon found little portrait work in recession-ravaged Chicago and they also lost two children to cholera while living

Today, it is a historic house museum showcasing art and artifacts from the Peck family’s past. there, so they decided to follow the Churchills into DuPage County.

Over a 28-year period Harriett gave birth to 12 children (six of them in Lombard). Ten lived to adulthood.

SOCIAL ACTIVISM AND ABOLITION

While Sheldon traveled through rural areas throughout Illinois, Wisconsin, and Missouri, painting portraits, Harriet minded the children and the 204-acre farm where she raised Merino sheep; made award-winning cheese; and healed both neighbors and itinerants. She even maintained a sick room in the house. Sheldon would periodically return home, reportedly always bringing a roll of money that he had earned from his art and turning it over to Harriett.

The couple was active in the Underground

Railroad movement because they were radical abolitionists, according to newspaper articles and the memoirs of their son, Frank. He reported the Pecks helping to save seven former slaves as well as “Old Charley” who had escaped from Missouri. Sheldon and his two oldest sons, John and Charles, even attended abolitionist meetings.

The Pecks were also ardent followers of the temperance movement, which aimed to curb the consumption of alcohol, and they didn’t make a secret of their views, Richardt said.

Sheldon died in 1868, the year before Babcock’s Grove was re-named “Lombard,” and Harriett lived another 21 years, dying in 1887.

Both were reportedly overjoyed by the fall of the South in the Civil War because they knew that spelled the end of slavery.

Three more generations of Pecks lived in and maintained the home for over 100 years after Harriet died. Their son, Frank, and then their granddaughter, Alyce, lived in the family home until 1991. A few years after Alyce’s death, her son, Allen, donated it to the Lombard Historical Society and sold the land to the village. Since then, the Society has restored the house to the 1840-1860 time period.

“It is a modest house with a radical history,” Richardt said.

RECREATION The Lombard Park District provides recreation opportunities for people to enjoy life. Offerings include community special events, adult and youth organized sports; classes and programs for families, children and adults; and summer day camp for ages 3 to 14. The park district also runs a before and after school program called Club Rec. Martial arts, adult athletics, fine art, dance and Kiddie Campus Preschool round out the activities offered.

Lombard Park District also offers a full array of fitness programming and opportunities at Madison Meadow Athletic Center, including group fitness classes, personal training opportunities, athletics courts, a walking track and fitness center.

The park district’s Paradise Bay Water Park is a state-of-the-art facility features Hurricane Cove, a zero-depth entry leisure pool with spouts, fountains, water sprays, whirlpool and host to a body slide, bowl slide, speed slide and water walk.

The water park also features a 12-foot dive well, 3-meter and 1-meter dive boards and a drop slide.

Paradise Bay Water Park offers a variety of special events, swim lessons, swim and dive teams and age-related open swim times. Swim the entire summer with a “Passport to Paradise” pool pass.

The district owns and operates 17 parks, Lombard Golf Course, and the Madison Meadow Athletic Center. The parks have a variety of amenities including walking paths, tennis courts, a skate park and athletic fields. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the longstanding Lilac Queen contest, a scholarship program held in conjunction with the Lombard Lilac Time event.

Coordinated by the GFWC Lombard Junior Women’s Club, the program is open to young women ages 16 to 21 who live in Lombard. The five young women selected to represent Lombard on the Lilac Court are chosen based on community and school involvement, poise, grace, speaking ability and personal presentation. Each Lilac Princess receives a scholarship awarded by the Lombard Junior Women’s Club.

LILACIA PARK

Lombard owes Lilacia Park and its collection of lilacs to Colonel William Plum and his wife, Helen Maria Williams Plum.

The Lombard Park District was founded in 1927 when Lombard residents voted to accept the stipulations set forth in Colonel Plum’s will, which bequeathed his property to the citizens. The new park district commissioned Jens Jensen, the famous landscape architect, to design what is now known as Lilacia Park at 150 S. Park Ave. In 2020, Lilacia Park Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

It’s impossible to separate Lombard from its lilacs. Lilac Time, a village-wide festival celebrated each May, is held in Lilacia Park.

It celebrates the history of Lombard’s lilacs with a coronation, historical tours, tastings, entertainment and a 5K race. Throughout the year, the Lombard Park District maintains the horticultural showcase that hosts wedding ceremonies, movies in the park and Holiday Lights in Lilacia. ALE FEST

The Lombard Ale Fest is Lombard’s premier craft beer festival featuring beer from more than 60 American craft breweries serving more than 80 unique craft beers, live music and some of Chicagoland’s favorite food trucks. This four-day event offers a wide range of entertainment including live bands.

Germanfest also features a casino on Friday and Saturday nights, and bingo all four days of the fest. Special kids’ activities include free kids’ bingo on Saturday. New this year are food trucks with a variety of offerings to enjoy, and as always, a large selection of frosty beverages. Admission is free, with a small charge for the casino.

HISTORICAL ATTRACTIONS

The Lombard Historical Society maintains two historic house museums, the Victorian Cottage and the Sheldon Peck Homestead.

Visitors to the Victorian Cottage will learn about life in the mid-1800s when the days of the pioneer farmer in Lombard were giving way to the industrial age. A permanent exhibit showcases themes throughout Lombard’s history.

The Sheldon Peck Homestead highlights the life of artist and abolitionist Sheldon Peck, whose house was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Exhibits focus on Peck’s folk art, pioneer life and involvement in the abolitionist movement. The Homestead is part of the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.

The most significant historical landmark in Lombard is the Maple Street Chapel at the corner of Main and Maple Streets.

Built in 1870, it served as the first church of Lombard and the first meeting place for the village government. It is a classic example of American Gothic architecture, with a boardand-batten exterior, grisaille windows and an interior finished with beautiful beaded board throughout.

May 29 will be the 150th anniversary of the chapel’s dedication. Today it hosts numerous concerts, is open for guided tours and is available for weddings to people of all faiths.
