Live, Work and Play • Centrally located within the Chicago metropolitan region • Easy access to interstates I-290, I-355, I-90 & I-294 and Illinois Route 390

n Itasca is a delightful study in contrasts with historic buildings, charming homes and local businesses, as well as modern facilities and Fortune 500 businesses. Located 20 miles northeast of Downtown Chicago in DuPage County, Itasca offers residents, businesses and visitors access to superior transportation options, including two major interstates, Metra train service on the Milwaukee District West Line, and Pace Bus service. The newly constructed IL Rt. 390 is providing western access to nearby O’Hare International Airport. The village has also established a network of walking and bike paths around the community. Itasca has a quaint downtown, which features local merchants and restaurants. Just south of the downtown is the community’s signature green space, Usher Park. On many Saturday afternoons, visitors will see couples posing for wedding pictures in Usher Park’s iconic gazebo with the historic church in the background. Surrounding Itasca’s downtown area are many historic homes, some built in the mid-1800s. The majority of Itasca homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, with many newer homes built on the community’s perimeter. A new 300-unit luxury apartment complex has recently been completed in the Hamilton Lakes office park, providing options for those in Itasca who want to live close to work and transportation. Hamilton Lakes and Spring Lake are Itasca’s two largest office parks with a total over 4 million square feet of office space. Itasca is also has a number of industrial businesses with the largest industrial area being west of I-290. This industrial park has over 8 million square feet of industrial, flex and office space. Every year, Itasca hosts some of the area’s best festivals, including Itascafest in July and Oktoberfest in September. In partnership with Hamilton Partners, Itasca puts on the largest fireworks display in DuPage County on Independence Day.

Itasca Park District T

he Itasca Park District was awarded the coveted 2017 National Gold Medal Award from the National Recreation and Parks Association. Four finalists from across the nation were competing for this prestigious award. Itasca with a population of approximately 9,000 was opposing park districts with populations of up to 30,000. The park district won this award previously in 2003 and 2009. Itasca parks are now home to four artificial turf surface playgrounds: Country Club (2017), Schiller (2018), Ray Franzen Bird Sanctuary (2018), and Washington (2017). The playgrounds and surfacing allow for less maintenance, more comfortable play surface for the little ones and provide accessibility for all. And don’t forget the turf volleyball court at Peacock Park! Last year, the District rededicated the Ray Franzen Bird Sanctuary.

The project included: picnic shelter, nature-based playground, baggos, interpretive signage, The Barking Lot dog park (opened Spring 2019) and 1/3 mile ADA pathway made of boardwalk and concrete throughout the Sanctuary. Now for the first time the Sanctuary is accessible to all. It is open 365 days of the year, from sunrise to sunset for people to enjoy. With the forward thinking of Itasca Ancestors, the continued Park District promise to preserve open space, and commitment to Itasca History; this is just another Itasca Park District Project which embraces this Village Motto of “Committed To Our Future, Inspired By Our Past.” Summer/Fall of 2019, the Park District acquired 3.33 acres of additional land at Benson Park with the assistance of a grant; replaced the entire parking lot at the Itasca Recreation & Fitness Center; and installed interpretive and wayfinding signage throughout the Springbrook Nature Center. Future projects include the installation of new interior exhibits throughout the Springbrook Nature Center and the complete replacement of the Itasca Waterpark Bathhouse! The Itasca Park District is continuously evolving and changing! To see what is new, stop by the parks, fitness center water park, and other facilities, and come enjoy the many special events throughout the year. Visit itascaparkdistrict.com for more information.

Transportation

N

o mode of transportation is too unique, or for that matter, too mundane for Itasca to try. Metra has long offered commuters the Milwaukee District West railroad running from Union Station in Chicago to Elgin, running right through Itasca and many of its neighbors. In addition, the Illinois Tollway opened the $780 million, allelectronic I-390 Tollway in November 2017 to provide improved travel between Lake Street and Route 83, while also laying the groundwork for new western access to O’Hare International Airport. Completion of the I-390 Tollway added 10 miles of free-flowing roadway with six new or improved interchanges, including a new free-flow I-290 interchange, and more than 13 lane miles of frontage roads to accommodate local traffic, according to a Tollway Authority spokesperson. The new road is the Tollway system’s first all-electronic, cashless roadway, with no toll booths or coin baskets. Drivers without I-PASS pay their tolls online. Since June 2018, traffic volumes on I-390 have increased substantially, with the majority of that growth occurring on the segment east of I-290, the spokesperson continued. The average number of toll transactions on the eastern portion of I-390 increased by 11.6 percent in the first quarter of 2019, compared to the previous year, despite severe winter weather in early 2019. In June, traffic counts at individual toll plazas on the eastern segment increased between 10 percent and 19 percent for both cars and trucks, compared to June 2018 figures. The Tollway expects traffic to continue increasing as work progresses on the connection to I-490, which will eventually provide a new link between I-90 and I-294. The I-390 Tollway, when coupled with the new I-490 Tollway, will connect businesses and communities with one of the nation’s busiest airports, transit facilities, major freight hubs, distribution centers and multiple interstate highways, including I-90 and I-294. The I-490 Tollway is being built to carry northsouth traffic around the western border of O’Hare and provide access to O’Hare Airport. Together, the two new Tollways will provide 17 miles of new roads with 15 new or improved interchanges. This year, the Tollway is continuing to build the interchange that will connect I-390 to I-490 at the western edge of O’Hare Airport. The interchange is expected to be completed in 2023. Itasca Chamber of Commerce

IT-ITA-CW-19 Design.indd 13

“We’re excited about the benefits this project is already providing to our customers by increasing mobility and improving access to the businesses and communities around O’Hare Airport,” said Tollway Executive Director José Alvarez. “The new I-490 Tollway will trigger even more dramatic changes by creating for the first time western access into the airport and opening new links between other major highways in the region, including I-90 and I-294. We’re eager to keep pushing ahead and deliver these exciting improvements to our customers.” Once you are within Itasca’s borders there are even more options beyond using your personal vehicle, according to Dan Corcoran, Itasca’s Information Technology Director. For instance, there is Itasca’s “Dash on Demand” fleet of vehicles that are currently providing “last mile” commuting services between the Itasca Metra station and Hamilton Lakes for $5 per person per ride. It is hoped that the car service will continue to grow in number of vehicles and expand to provide additional services in the community, including making deliveries and providing other services to Itasca residents and businesses. There is also the Itasca Zagster Bikeshare Program which offers bike rentals by the hour at an affordable rate. To use one of the bikes, based on Orchard Street or at Hamilton Lakes, you just download the app, choose a bike, unlock it and ride. The price is $1 for every 30 minutes. You pay as you go but monthly and annual plans are also available. “This is a great option for those who want to commute via bicycle or even for those who want to ride during their lunch break,” Corcoran explained. “Busse Woods, the Itasca Nature Center and even the Salt Creek Greenway Trail are all excellent destinations for cyclists.” Since 2007, Massachusetts-based Zagster has been at the forefront of the “micro-mobility” revolution. Micro-mobility is a new concept that's developing around new forms of transportation — e-bikes, e-scooters, and pedal bikes.

Business Profiles WALTER E. SMITHE FURNITURE & DESIGN Walter E. Smithe Furniture & Design is a well-known and prolific part of Chicago area life with ten showrooms around the area. But few realize that this venerable family business is based in Itasca and has been for years. “Itasca is central to the market we serve,” explained Colleen Smithe Parker, Director of Advertising. “Having our warehouse and offices here makes it easy to get to our showrooms and our clients’ homes.” Colleen and her three sisters are the fourth generation of Smithes to become involved in the family’s furniture business. Their greatgrandfather, Walter E. Smithe Sr., opened an appliance business with a partner in 1945 and his son, Walter Jr. convinced them to devote a corner of their appliance store to custom furniture in the mid-1960s. Before long, Walter Jr. and his brothers, Gary and Tomm, opened a custom sofa and chair store in Park Ridge. But when he wanted to expand further, his brothers declined and they ended up owning and running the appliance store while Walter took over the furniture side of the business, basing it in the suburbs because he understood that they were becoming the place to do business. In 1982 Walter Jr. sat down with his son, Walt III, and they incorporated Walter E. Smithe Custom Furniture. “We looked at the map of the Chicago area and realized that it formed a crescent. So, we decided to open stores throughout that crescent, from north to south, so that all the stores were within a half hour of each other,” he said in a 2016 interview. Today, Colleen and her sisters, Meghan, Maureen and Caitie, are integral to the business, handling advertising, sales strategy, buying and design, respectively. Their father, Walter III, is president and his brother, Mark, is vice president and the firm’s general counsel. “We work very hard to make sure we can serve all furniture buyers in Chicago, regardless of their style preferences and budgets. We want everyone to come home to a beautiful home and our designers make that happen,” she explained.

CUSTOM SECURITY ELECTRONICS Custom Security Electronics is a custom security system installation contractor and service provider which has been part of the Itasca community for 11 years. Owned by Michael Chelberg, the firm provides fire and security systems, closed circuit cameras, card readers, intercoms and access control, primarily to commercial/office buildings throughout the Chicago area, including parts of Wisconsin and Indiana. “We primarily work with property managers and building owners

who have everything from small storefronts to hi-rise office buildings,” Chelberg said. “We help them determine their needs, sell the electronic systems, install them and then service them, as needed.” Custom Security Electronics mixes a variety of brands in their installations, choosing the best products from each line and having them work together -- like Honeywell security systems, Bosch motion detectors and GRI door contacts. “We always choose the highest quality, most reliable products for our installations, not the cheapest ones,” Chelberg explained. “We only install for customers products that I would want to use in my own home or business.” Chelberg started Custom Security Electronics 29 years ago after working in the commercial security systems division of Honeywell and then for a Park Ridge locksmith who wanted to also offer security systems. Soon he opened his own company, working from home at first. Today he has seven employees and does 90 percent of his business with commercial clients. The remaining 10 percent is done with apartment and condominium managers. “We often work with contractors who are renovating office buildings and occasionally work with general contractors who are building new structures,” Chelberg said. “Other installations are done for those who want updates to an aging system or want a system where none has existed.” “Most of our business is done through word-of-mouth recommendations from former customers, so we have to do good work and exceed our customers’ expectations if we want to stay in business,” he continued. They recently joined the Itasca Chamber in order to provide our services and get to know businesses in their own backyard. Custom Security Electronics can be reached at 630-775-1100.

He performs surgery at three surgical centers, as well as at four hospitals – AMITA Adventist Glen Oaks Medical Center in Glendale Heights, AMITA Adventist Medical Center Bolingbrook, Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Patients with serious infections and pain are also often admitted for treatment. “I have wanted to be a podiatrist ever since I was about 12. My uncle was a podiatrist and I spent a lot of summers in his office, observing and helping out,” McKanna explained. “So, I love my job. It has been an honor to join Dr. Schlund’s very well-established practice. She has been doing this longer than I have been alive.” “I joined the Itasca Chamber to get to know the area and to let people get to know me. I treat every patient as if they were my own family member and I want people to understand that about me. I also want to be able to recommend a local business if I patient asks me. So I need to get to know those local businesspeople.” Itasca Foot & Ankle is located at 209 N. Walnut Street (next to the train station) in Itasca. To schedule an appointment, call (630) 773-2478.

ITASCA FOOT & ANKLE Drs. Marie Schlund and Alex McKanna at Itasca Foot & Ankle can treat any foot or ankle-related injuries and illnesses you might encounter, from ankle fractures to bunions to diabetes-related issues and beyond. They also offer orthotics and braces customized to fit patients individually. For over 30 years, Dr. Schlund has served patients from all over the Chicago area, alleviating chronic foot pain and treating conditions to promote healthy feet. She has recently been joined by Dr. Alex McKanna, a Minooka native and graduate of the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. He joined Itasca Foot & Ankle last spring after serving a three-year foot reconstruction surgical residency at Franciscan Health Dyer Hospital in Dyer, IN. Since joining the Itasca practice, Dr. McKanna has also become a member of the Itasca Chamber of Commerce in an effort to get to know the community and publicize his addition to the popular practice which treats bunions, hammer toes, Charcot Foot and other diabetes-related issues, wounds, nerve problems, sports injuries and more.

Economic Development I

tasca is arguably one of DuPage County’s most thriving communities, largely thanks to its proximity to I-290, Route 53 and the new I-390. As realtors say: it’s all about location, location, location and Itasca has a location that others envy. Its incredible accessibility to Chicago (via the Milwaukee West line and several expressways) and also to nearby O’Hare International Airport made it the place that Hamilton Partners chose to build its 308-acre Hamilton Lakes complex during the early 1980s which has spurred local growth ever since. “We view Hamilton Partners as an important economic development partner. They have made tremendous multi-million dollar investments over the last few years on renovations to their office facilities and significant wayfinding and gateway signage enhancements to remain competitive and attract tenants looking for high quality, modern facilities,” explained Shannon Malik Jarmusz, Itasca’s Director of Community Development. RagingWire, a data center company, will soon break ground within Hamilton Lakes on a 460,000-square-foot facility on 20 acres near the intersection of Hamilton Lakes Drive and Pierce Road. They had announced the project last year but it was paused by company executives as they re-evaluated their plans. Now they are ready to resume moving forward and will build two free-standing buildings instead of one. This will be RagingWire’s first data center in the Midwest. Founded in 2000, RagingWire operates by “co-locating” multiple firms’ computing systems in a single data center (or now in centers all over the world). RagingWire's idea was to build a data center that could be

repaired while it was running and is not even susceptible to a utility outage. The industry term used today for these types of facilities is "concurrently maintainable and fault tolerant" and is now considered to be a “best practice”. Malik Jarmusz indicated that because of the nature of the data center business, the use will not have a significant impact on the surrounding roadway system, resulting in less traffic and wear and tear than a typical office use. This is because data centers tend to have less on-site employees than what would be expected with most offices. In addition, the Village will receive a significant increase in utility tax revenue due to the high electrical usage required by such facilities. Other big news involves Bridge Development Partners, LLC acquiring a 48acre site near the intersection of Rohlwing Road and Devon Avenue. It is the last large open parcel of land of its size, left within the Village and was sold to Bridge by Entercom Communications Corp. which merged with CBS Radio in November, 2017. Bridge plans to build a state-of-the-art industrial complex called Bridge Point Itasca, totaling 741,621 square feet across three state-of-the-art distribution/logistics centers. All three buildings will be designed to accommodate a single tenant or multiple tenants and will be divisible down to 25,000-square-foot units. The development will also include more than seven acres of land which is zoned for 48,000 square feet of retail use along Rohlwing Road on the west. “We are so proud of this acquisition, and anxious to start construction on what we believe will be the premier business park in the O’Hare market,” Steve Groetsema, partner,

Midwest region at Bridge, said. “The benefits of this park, namely the DuPage County location west of the airport, the interstate access, and the image offered by the visibility would all make this an appealing location on their own. Offering all three in one location, with on-site retail amenities to be developed as well, makes this irreplaceable real estate in our eyes.” “This is a very important project for Itasca, too,” said Malik Jarmusz. “It is in a prime location adjoining I-290, I-390 and Route 53 and a rare redevelopment opportunity due to its size in built-out DuPage County. The Village began envisioning a meaningful development for this site a few years back, since it was only a matter of time before technological advances made the on-site towers no longer necessary in this location. We had a real opportunity to ensure a high quality development by partnering with Bridge while at the same time, realizing some of the Village’s longer-term goals to see retail along the Rohlwing Road corridor.” Itasca attracted 26 new businesses during 2018 including H2O Auto Spa and United Business Mail. They also expect Kiddie Academy to soon begin work on a new day care facility at Prospect Courtyard and see growth in medical/surgical offices ahead. The Bank of Itasca is investing in site enhancements including a building addition and reconfiguring the parking lot to better serve its customers. The Village also recently received an $80,000 grant from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) and the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) to complete a Downtown Strategic Action Plan update. Malik Jarmusz indicated that the Village will participate in a project kickoff meeting with RTA and CMAP staff soon and there will be plenty of opportunities for public comment and participation as the planning process gets underway in coming months. The Village was also happy to reveal its new logo which was painted on the water tower on Prospect Avenue at 390 this summer. The new logo was the result of a community branding initiative completed earlier this year which sought the input of residents and the business community. Additional residential development is also coming. “A 16-unit townhouse community called Highland Gates is currently under construction on the west side Route 53, south of Irving Park Road. In addition, a number of single family subdivision requests have been approved and Landmark Custom Homes is completing their Pierce Place development within Hamilton Lakes with eight new townhomes. It couldn’t be a more exciting time for the Village of Itasca,” said Malik Jarmusz. www.itascachamber.com
