CHAMBER PRESIDENT’S WELCOME The Harwood Heights-Norridge Chamber of Commerce is proud to present its annual community guide. This guide is a valuable resource for finding local businesses, schools, churches, organizations and governmental services in the area. It is also valuable to our members for reaching customers, promoting their business and supporting the Chamber and community. The Chamber boasts over 100 members. This year promises to be exciting with even more events to plan, and special guest speakers at Chamber meetings. Together, the Chamber and its members strive to provide opportunities to network with other business owners, to improve business conditions and to give back to the community through scholarship opportunities and sponsorships of local events. We also strive to advocate for our businesses within the villages and with our elected officials. However, this is only possible through the time and participation of its members. To those businesses and organizations who are already members of the chamber – thank you for your support. For those in the community who want to know what we are about, please attend a meeting or networking event on me. I would like to take this opportunity to give special thanks to the Chamber’s returning officers: Mark Fritsch of First Centennial Mortgage, Julie Stam of Eisenhower Library, Jerry Kochowicz, branch manager of Wintrust Bank Norridge and Katherine O’Dell of the law office of

8

Amari and Locallo. For those of you who have not yet joined, please take this as a personal invitation to come to a meeting and see for yourself what the Chamber can do for your business. Hope to see you soon. MAYOR’S WELCOME Dear Members, Future Members and Visitors of our Community, Welcome to 2020, an exciting new decade of continued growth for our village. We are a vibrant community with the feel of a small town. Harwood Heights is often referred as an “Island in the City” because our easy access to the Chicago metropolitan area via public transportation as well as the interstate highway system. In fact, you can get any where in the nation or the world given our proximity to O’Hare Airport. Through the collaborative efforts of residents and elected officials a comprehensive development plan was implemented approximately 10 years ago. During that time several new businesses joined our community while many of our long-time establishments underwent “face lifts” offering residents and visitors new options for retail, entertainment and housing. Careful fiscal oversight and grant funding allowed us to address infrastructure needs such as modernization of the water distribution system, widening of streets and the installation of “green” alleys. Residents enjoy our new Recreation Center with activities and programs for all age groups. Our financial stability earned the village a Standard and Poor’s A+ rating and a strong foundation for continued growth. The Harwood Heights-Norridge Chamber of Commerce

12

plays an important role in supporting our local businesses. These women and men with varying wisdom and experience create a network that creates a welcoming environment for businesses that, in turn, encourages economic development and stability for the residents of our community. I am certain that 2020 will be as exciting as the last decade. Whether you are a resident or visitor do come out and explore the new Harwood Heights. Meet your neighbors or make new friends as we all come together to support local businesses and share new ideas to keep Harwood Heights thriving while maintaining our hometown feel. I look forward to meeting you in your exploration of Harwood Heights. Sincerely, Mayor Arlene Jezierny Village of Harwood Heights

NORRIDGE MAYOR’S WELCOME Dear Residents and Business Owners: The Village of Norridge offers suburban living while being near the city. Located just east of O’Hare airport, Norridge is near Chicago and many of the expressways making it an ideal location for businesses and residents alike. Norridge continuously proves to be a great place to live and raise your family. Not only was I born and raised in Norridge, my wife and I chose to raise our family here as well. I also run my business in Norridge. The Village of Norridge is driven heavily by its sales tax revenue, which makes up more than 70 percent of our annual revenue. We are currently working with the Harlem Irving Plaza to complete remodeling of the old Carson Pirie Scott store. Leases have already been signed for DSW, Hobby Lobby and Five Below. We also welcomed Chick-fil-A to Norridge in February. Daisy Café and Brunch Café are scheduled to open on Harlem Avenue in summer 2020. We are working with the representatives of the Norridge Commons to develop the old K-Mart location that will start early spring through next year. We are also working with potential developers to develop the old Makray Manufacturing site at Harlem and Montrose. My staff and I are committed to developing retail properties and therefore

bringing new jobs to the Village of Norridge as well as new experiences for residents and visitors. Please continue to support our local retailers. Sincerely yours, Daniel Tannhauser Village President VILLAGE OF NORRIDGE

THE DUNNING READ CONSERVATION AREA

The Dunning Read Conservation Area (DRCA) is 23 acres of prairie, woodland and wetland combined to form one of the most unique and treasured natural areas Chicago has to offer. In 2007, a group of neighbors and local leadership came together to petition the state to protect this land as a sustainable landscape that supports biodiversity and human communities through natural resource preservation, education and recreation. Since 2007, DRCA has engaged neighbors and local businesses to support an ongoing effort to open up this area at the corner of Oak Park Avenue and Irving Park Road for neighborhood use. Walking on the nature trail, bird watching, native plant restoration and providing healthy habitats for native wildlife are all goals for the conservation area. DRCA is also interested in engaging the surrounding communities, developing community connections and supporting environmental education opportunities to increase the appreciation of this local ecosystem. When in the area, stop and take a look for yourself. DRCA is open April 1 through Oct. 30, sun-up to sundown. The 1-mile-long, wood chip trail that winds through

prairie and forested areas, near a small lake is a highlight not to be missed. DRCA sits on property shared with Chicago-Read Mental Health Center and parking is free, located just south of the center’s parking area. Although this area has been around for over 10 years, the work to completely open up the area is still in the early stages and DRCA needs your help. The third Saturday of each month, from April through November is set aside for community restoration efforts. DRCA volunteers meet at 9 a.m., roll up their sleeves and have a lot of fun. DRCA encourages residents to participate in volunteer days. Visit DRCA and stay in touch on Facebook.

PROUD TO BE

YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD BANK

What do we love the most about this area? The people we share it with! That’s why we support the families here, the local businesses, and the charitable organizations, too. Beyond providing banking solutions, we also take pride in giving back to the people who work to make our community so great. Why? Because this isn’t just home for us; it’s home to all of us. We know that when we all do our part, we can help make Norridge a great neighborhood for everyone.
