GRAYSLAKE HISTORY – THE LAKE

T

he history of Grayslake has had little to do with either the Gray family or the lake named after them. William M. Gray was one of the first settlers to arrive in the area from New York State (before 1840) and he farmed alongside the lake which acquired his name through common usage. But the Gray family moved on to Iowa during the 1860s and the lake has always had limited public access. It is owned by the people who live along it and the village’s downtown is not located on lakefront property. Currently, there are only two places of public access to Gray’s Lake, including Jones Island and a semi-private rowboat, canoe and kayak storage site with lake access. No motor boats are permitted on the 80-acre lake, which has an average depth of about five feet. Swimming, boating and fishing are popular in the summer, but winter sports are enjoyed, too. Gray’s Lake is a kettle lake that was created when the glaciers receded and a large piece of ice fell off, denting the land. When that ice melted, it created the lake, according to Michelle Poe, deputy director of the Grayslake Heritage Center. This type of lake quickly dries up, however, without a steady source of water. Fortunately, Gray’s Lake is fed by a spring which has kept it a viable lake all of these centuries. Former resident John “Bud” Murrie once recalled, “When I was in high school, we would go down to the lake where the vacant lot is and borrow a boat. We would go out, tip the boat over and swim in the lake by the hour in summertime. Everybody would be out in the lake. We didn’t have what you would call a good beach, but if we could get past the channel and out toward the spring, the swimming was great.” Years before Grayslake was incorporated in 1895, the lake was being used by organizations and businesses. As early as 1880, the Lake County Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Reunion held a three-day encampment at the lake, bringing their families, friends and tents and spending the days with music and storytelling. Their encampments continued for many years. Other groups such as Modern Woodman of America and a Chicago cavalry unit held picnics and camps, and in 1881 Governor Cullom of Illinois was a guest at a Fourth of July celebration at the lake. Some Chicago businesses also held company parties there. There were even hotels built in the area during the late 1800s. The Slusser Park Hotel was built around 1870, close to the southwest shore of the lake. For its day, it was a fine lake resort and during the summer, it catered to area events, according to Linda Willhite, vice president of the Grayslake Historical Society. It closed in 1886. The Grayslake Hotel was built in 1889. Though not on the lake, it housed many of the summer visitors to the lake. Built by Mary Hook and run by her and her husband, Willis Gardinier, the hotel was publicized as a place to stay and

eat when visiting the area. Later, there was a public beach you could pay to enjoy. Although its formal name was “Grayslake Park,” it was called “Pete’s Park” by the locals. Pete Newhouse, publisher of the Grayslake Times from 1912 to the mid-1920s, purchased land that fronted on present-day Lake Street in 1924 from a farmer named John Hook. According to Willhite, it is thought that Newhouse intended to develop the land for houses but instead turned the property into a private picnic park. The park extended south from Hawley Court to 10 N. Lake Street with a narrow strip going to the lake. The park included a pop stand, a baseball field, playground equipment and picnic tables. A large farmhouse stood in the middle of the park. Each weekend people, mostly from Chicago, came to enjoy the lake and area’s fresh air. They paid admission, paid to rent boats and caused memorable traffic jams, said Charlotte Renehan, president of the Grayslake Historical Society. Along the lake there was a small beach with a wading pool. In 1948 it was the site of Douglas Getchell Day. Local resident Getchell was elected Commander of the Illinois Department of the American Legion so Legionnaires from across the

10

state congregated in Grayslake for a huge parade and convention in the park. By 1950 Newhouse wanted to quit the park business and offered to sell the park to the village for $30,000. Support for the venture was strong but they couldn’t raise the necessary money. So, the village lost the opportunity to have a park in downtown Grayslake. Instead, Porter Duell Jr. and Chris Thompson took over the operation of the park in 1951. The park continued until 1958 when the land was sold to S & K Land Company of Round Lake Park. In its stead was built a grocery store, a gas station and several beautiful homes. The property’s original house was moved to Hickory Street, east of Grayslake Central High School. Today that area is covered with single family homes, a condominium building and an insurance building. During the first half of the 20th century, the west side of Gray’s Lake was populated by Chicagoans who rented summer homes and cottages. Thyra Wicks recalled in an oral history that her husband ran a “bus” service for the summer people, carrying them to the lake in a carriage pulled by horses. William Ellis, a railroad attorney and the publisher of a political magazine, had a large house with tennis courts and uniformed servants. Maud Weeks, publisher of Milk Plant Monthly, 2017 COMMUNITY GUIDE & BUSINESS DIRECTORY

also had a home on Gray’s Lake’s western shore. Fishing was a huge pastime for residents and visitors alike. “I used to catch a lot of Northern and Pickerel,” recalled Harold Burge. “You could catch them all summer long up here in the big sloughs around 1910. I also used to go down to the lake and set traps for fish with milk cans. The farmers used to have a place over there at the end of the lake on Route 120 where they used to dump milk cans off. I was out there fishing one day. The fish weren’t biting very good. I reached down and got a hold of a milk can and there were two nice big bullheads in it. I found another can that had a couple in it. After that I went down to the lake near every day and put cans in the lake. After a week or two I could go around out there and have more bullheads than I could carry home.” Winter was very big time at Gray’s Lake. They held ice fishing tournaments and ice boat races. They also played hockey, ice skated, tobogganed and even drove cars on the lake. They also used the lake as a source of ice for refrigeration in those days. “We had a man in town on North Slusser Street by the name of Walter Nordmeyer,” Murrie mentioned in his oral history. “He had a big ice house north of the corner of Hawley and Center. They used to go down to George Street where they would pull the ice up from the lake

in winter and haul it over and store it with straw in an ice house. Then, in the summer, he would sell the ice.” “That would have been in the early thirties. It was dangerous at night if we were skating there. He would cut long slits out of the ice and pull the chunks of ice out. More than one kid got a good dunkin’ there!” Wes Druce added. “The meat markets and all the taverns had ice houses. I would say there were at least 10 ice houses to be filled each year,” Everette Hook recalled. If you are interested in learning more about the rich history of Gray’s Lake, visit the Grayslake Heritage Center, a joint effort of the

Grayslake Historical Society and the Village of Grayslake, at 164 Hawley St. An exhibit about the lake and its history will run in the upper gallery through mid-March, 2018, according to David Oberg, executive director of the Grayslake Heritage Center. The Heritage Center is open from noon to 7 p.m., Wednesday and from noon to 4 p.m., Thursday through Sunday. It is also open by appointment and during major downtown Grayslake events. Good will donations are gratefully accepted. For more information, call (847) 223-7663 or www.grayslakehistory.org.

GRAYSLAKE PUBLIC SAFETY

G

rayslake is fortunate to be ably served by the Grayslake Fire Protection District and the Grayslake-Hainesville Police Department, led by Chief John Christian and Chief Phil Perlini, respectively. Both the fire district and the police department are continually expanding their services and looking for new and better ways to provide for the needs of residents. FIRE The Grayslake Fire Protection District’s 40 full-time and 28 part-time firefighters responded to a record of over 4,000 calls for help during 2016 and are continually getting additional specialized training to further serve residents of the District, according to Christian. District firefighters provide life- and property-saving services to not only district residents, but also to all of Lake County and northern Illinois by spending hours getting specialized training and then taking part in regional teams, made up of representatives from many departments. For instance, six Grayslake specialist firefighters are also certified public safety divers, trained to execute rescue and recovery efforts in both water and on ice, according to Christian. They are part of the Lake County Water Rescue Team which handles calls from Lake Michigan west to the Chain O’ Lakes. “We have many bodies of water in Grayslake and in Lake County, so we need highly-trained divers available year-round,” Christian said. “All fire district personnel are trained to an operation level.” Two other specialist firefighters have been trained to fight brush and forest fires and are part of the Wild Land Firefighting Team, which was formed a decade ago using a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. It can be deployed to other areas of the state when needed. All firefighters are trained to fight wildfires but this team is more comprehensive. However, the department responds to these fires when called, regardless of whether the specialized team members are on duty. “The Wild Land Firefighting Team is a tactical

team that is trained to be sensitive to the environment at the same time that they work to save people and structures,” Christian said. Another team that six Grayslake firefighters at the specialist rank have joined is the Hazardous Materials Team. They are called out when there is a hazardous material spill or leak from a truck or a train car, as well as when there is a chlorine leak at a swimming pool or a problem at a manufacturing plant. This team could also respond if a suspicious powder is found. Next, there is the Technical Rescue Team which responds to incidents in a high-rise building or a confined space like a trench or structure collapse. Four Grayslake firefighters are specially trained for this type of rescue. Finally, one Grayslake specialist firefighter is a member of the Illinois Urban Search and Rescue Team that goes into any catastrophic situation where they are needed including the aftermath of major weather events and terrorist attacks. “We have a very close relationship with our Established in 1899, the Grayslake Fire Protection District provides emergency services to the Village of Grayslake and surrounding areas encompassing 24.5 square miles. The district is governed by a board of trustees and levies taxes separately from the village. The department operates out of three fire stations and employs 68 personnel. Of these, 40 are full time and 28 are part time. Staff consists of 55 licensed paramedics and 11 licensed emergency medical technicians. Full-time positions include a chief, deputy chief, division chief of training, three battalion chiefs,

neighboring departments and our firefighters train and work together regularly, so we have a large group that can respond when needed,” Christian said. nine lieutenants, two fire inspectors, 22 firefighter/ paramedics, and an administrative assistant. The three fire stations are located to provide efficient response times. A fire station is located within 1½ miles of 90 percent of district residents. In 2015, the fire department responded to 4,000 emergency calls for service. Grayslake also participates in the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System to provide or receive cooperative assistance to incidents throughout the surrounding counties.

POLICE The Grayslake-Hainesville Police Department is also working with other area police departments on specialized issues. Perlini, for instance, is currently attending management classes sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security. It is part of a locally-initiated effort to establish an Illinois Management Assistance Team, which will be able to step in and help fellow departments in the event of a major police emergency. Over 20 police supervisors and chiefs from throughout Lake County are currently taking courses that will equip them to take one or more roles if an emergency arises – incident commander, safety officer, operations section chief, planning section chief or logistics section chief. The primary department would still make all of the necessary decisions concerning how an event is handled, Perlini said, but the management assistance team, one operational, will work up plans and options and present them to the primary department’s chief. They will also help with media relations, paperwork and so forth. DuPage County already has a similar team in place. Grayslake is also collaborating with other Lake County policing bodies including Mundelein, Libertyville, Gurnee, Round Lake Park and others in an effort to curb prescription drug abuse which often leads to opiate addiction, according to Perlini. “We got in on the ground floor of this effort, working alongside the Lake County Opiate Task Force,” he said. “We carry Narcan, the opiate overdose antidote, in all of our police cars now and have brought back two overdose victims so far in 2017, as well as six more in previous years.” But the effort does not end there. Anyone who feels that they have a drug addiction problem and decide that they want help can walk into the

An officer will sit with them until a counselor arrives or we will immediately transport them to a hospital or Gateway or other area rehabilitation institute, depending on the situation,” he added. “Since the program began last year, we have had eight people enter the program,” Perlini said. Residents can assist by disposing of their unused prescription drugs and old syringes in the approved containers in the department’s lobby, keeping them out of the hands of those who

might be using or experimenting with drugs. Perlini is particularly proud of the department’s Shop with A Cop program that helps between 30 and 40 local children each year. Local businesses and residents support the program which is run entirely on donations and involves a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a Christmas movie, treats and then a shopping outing with a police officer. The December event annually involves between 15 and 20 Grayslake police officers, supplemented by additional volunteers from the College of Lake County police force, the Lake County Forest Preserve Police and also officers from Round Lake Beach, Lindenhurst and Glenview.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

T

he economy is humming right along in Grayslake following several years of infrastructure improvements aimed at making the village even more attractive to businesses than in the past. In addition, downtown Grayslake is increasingly becoming a destination for those looking for fine dining and shopping in a picturesque community. Economic improvements are coming in all sectors – corporate/industrial, retail/commercial and residential. In addition, the village continues to make infrastructure and public space improvements. Okabe Company Inc., a Japanese manufacturer of metal fasteners for automotive and marine applications, has announced the construction of its new 130,000-square-foot North American headquarters on 21 acres at the northwest corner of the intersection of Peterson and Midlothian Roads. They are relocating from Vernon Hills and other sites in the region and are bringing with them between 50 and 60 full-time jobs, according to Kevin Timony, assistant village manager. In addition, the long-stalled Cornerstone development along Peterson Road between Route 83 and Alleghany Road will also be seeing new life soon. The Alter Group, owner of the 640acre parcel, is starting on the engineering work and on/off-site construction for the first phase of the project, which encompasses about 40 of the acres. Much of the project will be developed for commercial and industrial use, potentially attracting more big name corporations to Grayslake. But later phases may include limited retail and residential components, Timony noted. When it comes to retail/commercial improvements, Grayslake has also seen recent progress. Property in the 300 block of Atkinson Road has been rezoned in order to house Arrow Land + Structures, a landscape design firm that is relo-

cating from Vernon Hills. They will bring with them up to 55 seasonal employees and may open an adjacent nursery in the future. In addition, a private investor has spent $6 million to renovate and redevelop the Center

16

Street shopping center that once housed the Piggly Wiggly grocery store. Butera is now the anchor tenant and the entire center has a new façade and architectural look that is more in line with village design standards, Timony noted. The village kicked in $750,000 in economic incentives toward the project – $195,000 that was paid when Butera opened and the other $555,000 in the form of sale tax rebates, payable over 10 years. A new high-end steakhouse called 129 Center Cut has also opened in the downtown area at 129 Center St. (the site of the former Last Chance Saloon). The owners are the Bowes Family which also owns Emil’s Tavern in Grayslake. They invested $3.5 million in the new restaurant, which has been drawing patrons in with high quality food and service, Timony said. The large restaurant is also providing employment for between 40 and 60 full- and part-time employees and is drawing residents and visitors alike to the downtown area. 129 Center Cut also received economic incentives from the Village in the form of a $200,000 payment when the restaurant opened. Residential construction is underway across Grayslake, too, attracting more residents who 2017 COMMUNITY GUIDE & BUSINESS DIRECTORY

will patronize businesses, pay taxes and enjoy village services. Cal-Atlantic Homes has revived the long-suspended Lake Street Square 84-townhouse community and Icon Development is building 32 semi-custom homes of between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet at the Stoney Ridge subdivision, along Rollins Road, just west of Carillon North. In addition, Pathway Senior Living opened a 104-room Travanse Living community at the intersection of Routes 120 and 45. For seniors who want to remain in Grayslake, it provides 24-

hour support and care, including assisted living and memory care. Travanse offers both private and shared rooms and numerous community amenities. Those new residents will enjoy a number of recently installed public amenities. The expanded Millennium Court Veteran’s Memorial has been built at the southeast corner of Seymour and Center streets on the site of a former parking lot. The expanded park, which was part of the village’s downtown plan, features grass and hard-scaping, trestles, benches, a gated archway

and monument plaques erected to honor the history of Grayslake veterans of war. A new 47-space parking lot has been constructed at the northwest corner of Hawley and Slusher streets, and by late 2017 the Whitney Street parking lot will have been expanded to the south. “Our aim is to add extra parking for new business on the west end of the downtown and provide visitors to the downtown more convenient free parking,” Timony added.

There’s really no telling where your money goes when you bank with a big bank from out of town. How about when you choose State Bank of The Lakes? That we can tell you. Your money goes back into the things that matter most to you: the local economy, local organizations and charities, and the strengthening our local community. We care about these things too because, for us, this is more than just where we work. This is home.

PARK DISTRICT

T

he residents of Grayslake have wonderful, constantly improving recreational facilities and programming at their disposal so that everyone who wishes to do so can stay fit, healthy and engaged. The district is currently wrapping up a threeyear capital improvement plan that has included a new playground and resurfaced tennis and basketball courts at Meadowview Park, resurfaced trails in Lexington Woods and the installation of an irrigation system in the second phase of Alleghany Park. The plan was financed by a re-financing of bonds. This year the district will receive the last 35 acres of Alleghany Park in a planned donation and will irrigate that area in the fall, all in preparation for four new soccer fields and two new T-ball fields, according to Kristin Splitt, executive director of the Grayslake Park District. She said they also plan to install a lightning detection system at Alleghany Park, resurface the tennis and basketball courts at Sunrise Park and some additional trails, replace the playground at Tooterville Park and purchase new playground equipment for a spring 2018 installation at Cambridge Park. “We have 33 parks so we try to replace at least one playground every year and we will continue to finance some smaller-scale improvements until the state reinstates its grant program or we find an alternative source of funding,” Splitt said. “I am very pleased with how successful we have been in using District resources.” The programming that the Grayslake Park District offers at these many parks is particularly impressive. For instance, they offer a variety of special events throughout the year, including the Pumpkin Fest, the Polar Express train ride, the Family Picnic and Fireworks, the Mother-Son

ILGRACW17 design.indd 18

Activity Night, the Father-Daughter Dance, an Easter egg hunt and much more. This year the district held its first Earth Day volunteer clean-up event at Central Park, which attracted abut 55 volunteers of all ages, and they brought back their late July Cardboard Boat Regatta at Jones Island (after a four-year absence). They also plan to hold the Second Annual Family Bingo Night this fall, Splitt said. New programming this year includes Yoga in the Park, held once a week each at Central Park and Jones Island, and both indoor and outdoor pickleball. Seniors particularly enjoy this game and may play indoors at the recreation center on a drop-in basis twice a week from late autumn through mid-April. In addition, outdoor tennis

18

courts at Meadowview, Alleghany and Sunrise parks are being progressively enhanced with pickleball lines so that the game may also be played there. The day trip program for adults and seniors is also bursting at the seams because it is so popular, Splitt said. Groups regularly go to places like plays, casinos and restaurants. They also occasionally take trips to professional baseball games, Lake Geneva (for the mail boat tour) and this year they are even touring a 500-acre Michigan fruit farm one day. The Park District offers a wide range of recreational programs and activities year-round for all ages. “Come play with us!” Splitt said.

EDUCATION

G

rayslake’s young people are well served by top-notch schools from early childhood through college. They attend Community Consolidated School District 46 with its seven schools serving nearly 4,000 early childhood, elementary and middle school students, and then move on to Grayslake Community High School District 127, which educates students from eight villages at both Grayslake North and Grayslake Central High Schools. When it comes time for college, the choices are almost infinite, but the one that is closest to home is the College of Lake County, based in Grayslake. Founded in 1969, the College of Lake County (CLC) is a community college with campuses in Grayslake, Waukegan and Vernon Hills. It also offers online courses. With an enrollment of 14,769 students, CLC offers more than 200 programs of study leading to an associate degree or certificate, including more than 40 career fields. CLC’s mission is to deliver high quality, accessible learning opportunities to advance student success and strengthen the diverse communities it serves. CLC offers 52 majors designed for transfer to four-year colleges and universities, and the career programs offer degrees and certificates in business, technology, health care and more. Students may even choose among 22 four-year colleges and universities in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and Paris, France, that offer special incentives and guaranteed admission, ensuring a seamless transfer of credit. In addition to the classroom and online courses, the college offers more than 40 student clubs and 12 intercollegiate athletic sports teams. CLC also plays an important part in the fabric of life in Grayslake and other Lake County

communities. For the past 20 years, national touring companies and other professionals in the fields of comedy, music, dance and theater have regularly visited the James Lumber Center for the Performing Arts at the Grayslake campus, entertaining both students and members of the community. Members of the public also take advantage of non-credit courses and workshops on a variety of subjects ranging from professional development and business training to personal enrichment for youth and adults. Summer camps and “Explore” classes are offered for youth year-round, and the Small Business Development and International Trade

19

Center offers courses to entrepreneurs on starting their own businesses. Those who are seeking English classes for non-native speakers, basic education courses in English and math and who want to earn a high school diploma will also find the courses they need at CLC. Some professors even venture out into the community to speak at local libraries on specific topics of expertise. CLC is continually moving into the future with new programming and capital improvements. This fall they are adding a new associate and certificate program in supply chain management through the business and social sciences division and a yoga teacher certificate through the dance department. In addition, as part of the college’s $163 million master plan, new construction and improvements have taken place at all campuses, including a new three-story science building and student café at the Grayslake campus and a new chemistry lab at Southlake. HEALTH CARE

G

rayslake and surrounding communities are fortunate to have superlative health care opportunities within and just outside of the village. NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE GRAYSLAKE OUTPATIENT CENTER The Northwestern Medicine Grayslake Outpatient Center is a godsend to people living and working in Grayslake and neighboring communities who need to be seen by a physician, receive treatment, therapy or a diagnosis or who have an emergency arise. Medical attention is only a short drive away. The 275,000-square-foot “hospital without in-patient space” at 1475 E. Belvidere Rd. has been growing and expanding steadily since it first opened in 2004, according to Paul Williams, director of operations and administrator for Northwestern Medicine Grayslake. The facility features a free-standing emergency department that accepts ambulances; physician offices; outpatient cardiology testing; a fully-functional outpatient laboratory; rehabilitation services including audiology testing and physical, occupational and speech therapies; an ambulatory surgery center; a comprehensive cancer center that offers radiation therapy and chemotherapy infusion treatments; and a full radiology center offering MRIs, CT scans, diagnostic radiology, ultrasound, digital mammography and much more. The ambulatory surgery center features four operating suites with the same state-of-the-art technology seen at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital. There are also three pre- and post-operative rooms, six recovery bays and an eight-bed observation area, as well as two private consultation rooms. In 2017 the Northwestern Medicine Grayslake facility also opened a multi-specialty clinic in the 76,000-square-foot Pavilion C building that is now “home” to physicians representing over 20 different specialties ranging from endocrinology

GRAYSLAKE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

to cardiology, pulmonology, orthopedics, vision care, neurosciences, oncology, internal medicine and family medicine. The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago also maintains a pediatrics practice in the building. This is also the location of the physical, occupational

24

and speech pathology services. Northwestern Medicine is also in the process of expanding the Grayslake facility’s cancer center to meet a growing need. They are adding two private infusion bays and four semi-private infusion bays, bringing the total to 14 infusion bays (four of which are private), Williams said. The facility’s café, which overlooks the healing garden, has also been recently expanded and modernized. It now has additional seating and new menu items. “Establishing this facility northwest of Lake Forest Hospital was an incredibly smart move back in 2004. It makes access to Northwestern Medicine care so much easier for our patients who don’t want to routinely travel to Lake Forest for care. Northwestern Medicine has an incredible asset here in Grayslake which continues to grow,” Williams said. In addition, the physicians and staff members of Northwestern Medicine Grayslake reach out to community residents through their annual Children’s and Families’ Health and Safety Fair, held each June, and through a variety of support groups hosted on the campus. 2017 COMMUNITY GUIDE & BUSINESS DIRECTORY
