W E L COM E On behalf of the township, I would like to welcome you to East Brunswick. Our community sits at the Center of New Jersey and consistently ranks among the best communities in the Garden State. If you were to look at our township seal you would find the following three words proudly displayed — Home, Education and Commerce. Home to approximately 50,000 residents, East Brunswick is one of the most diverse collections of individuals and families. With houses of worship representing every major religion, people of all faiths are welcome in the township. Our schools teach ESL to students who come to the township speaking over 100 different languages and hailing from every part of the globe. It is our differences that make us unique, but it is

our bond as residents of this township that makes us strong and resilient. Ranked as the best police department in Middlesex County, the East Brunswick Police Department consistently helps the township remain one of the safest communities in the state. Our superior Blue Ribbon public school system has been a consistent source of pride. We are consistently ranked among the best school systems in the state and the country. Public education continues to be the number one reason that residents move to East Brunswick. Residents remain the driver of the Board of Education’s high standards. This is reflected in the regular resetting of expectations and goals as the public schools are constantly benchmarking to the highest levels of quality. The entire township takes pride in our public schools as they embrace their motto, Excellence in Academics, Athletics and the Arts. Long recognized as a main center for commerce, our most important commercial corridor is getting a long needed facelift.

Redevelopment is well under way and will make way for a mixed use, downtown, walkable community that will qualify as a Transit Oriented Development. With ease of access to public transportation and connectivity to surrounding communities, East Brunswick is poised to return to being a leading commerce center. The Route 18 corridor connects neighboring New Brunswick with the Jersey Shore. Our location at the center of the state and near major roads allows us to attract major commercial, industrial and manufacturing businesses. So whether you are attracted to the great schools, safe community, diverse cultural makeup, beautiful parks, top rated public water park, award winning public Library, wide variety of arts opportunities, or community/sports programs — East Brunswick is a great place to live. HISTORY

OF

EAST

BRUNSW ICK

A RICH PAST Take A Glimpse Into Yesteryear

Situated just inland of South River and bounded by Farrington Lake to the west, the early history of East Brunswick is a snapshot of 17th-century America, portraying a culturally diverse group of settlers. The early township was comprised of three distinct settlements and several villages. The section once known as Old Bridge Village was a bustling area of commerce and trade and is known today as the Old Bridge Historic

District. With roughly 80 homes listed on state and national historic registers and occupied by residents, the district is also the home of the East Brunswick Museum. “The museum building was formerly the Simpson Methodist Church for 100 years,” said Mark

Nonestied, museum volunteer. “It was built in 1862 and purchased by the township for use as a museum in 1977.” The museum preserves a rich legacy, documenting the life and times of early settlers. n By Cathy Cuthbertson

PERKS APLENTY The Best Township Around The township of East Brunswick is bustling with excitement that keeps residents and visitors alike entertained, engaged and enjoying life. East Brunswick has plenty of options when it comes to entertaining, from Broadway shows at Playhouse 22 to parks full of fun. Running paths, tennis courts, nature trails and kiddie parks are just a few of the plethora of options offered. And Crystal Springs Family Waterpark, which is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with a wide variety of surprises for the big event. “This year, we are providing some more programming, including swim lessons through the YMCA, youth parties, arts and crafts programs, family swim nights, movies in the park, a dog day at the park when we close in September and some other 25th anniversary surprises,” said Mike Reissner, director, Department of Recreation, Parks & Community Services. Seniors looking to stay engaged

can get active at the Senior Center and Department of Aging. The department runs a full schedule of programs and services for seniors. There are courses, hot lunches, intergenerational classes with the kids in school, free tax services, State Health Insurance Program counseling, season parties and many other programs. And for those who cannot make it there on their own, there are buses that can pick up residents. The township isn’t just alluring to residents and visitors. It’s also attracting plenty of businesses, with more than 50 new businesses coming to the Route 18 corridor alone during 2017 and 2018. That number is expected to rise in the coming months. “We’ve had a noticeable upswing in businesses coming to our main commercial corridor over the past couple of years with major retailers like HomeGoods, Burlington and Aldi’s choosing to open new stores here,” said Jonathan Sternesky, economic development officer for the township of East Brunswick. “Realistically, with our residents, central location and easy access to major transportation arteries, we expect that trend to continue.” Located near open fields, away from Route 18 but easily accessible

from exits 8A and 9 on the turnpike, sits one of East Brunswick’s newest jewels, the Park Chateau. Reminiscent of Versailles, this venue was so highly rated after its first wedding season, that it currently sits in the top 20 places to have a wedding in New Jersey. People literally come from all over the country to East Brunswick just to have their weddings there. Bustling with business and ideal for all ages, the township of East Brunswick is the ideal place to live, work and play. ■ By Brooke Payne

FUTURE

A LOOK AHEAD New Horizons Require 2020 Vision Innovative leadership and a vision for rejuvenation are taking the township of East Brunswick in fresh directions, shaping a prosperous future and strong community in the process New construction and redevelopment lead the way, with two major initiatives moving forward in the near future. Both will spur economic development and create pedestrian-friendly communities in an urban-like setting — thus creating a downtown in one of New Jersey’s busiest commercial corridors. “The main initiative is the redevelopment of the Route 18 corridor in the northern end of the township,” said Mayor Brad Cohen. “The idea is to stimulate new development that attracts businesses and residents, enhancing the community and reducing the tax burden for all residents long term.” The redevelopment project is slated to begin at the end of 2018 or early 2019 and is expected to be well underway by 2020, hence the project name — 2020 Vision. “First, the old Wonder Bread factory at 110 Tice’s Lane is scheduled for demo-

lition and will be replaced with a mixeduse and high-amenity development,” Cohen said. “We are also working with the developers on the creation of a community-use center within this project site.” The new properties will be highly accessible thanks to planned construction of a new cut-through roadway that will pass through the properties and connect to existing roads. This will create a parallel artery along Route 18 from Eggers to Tices and connects back to Route 18 near Lowe’s. The second part of this initiative shaping the township’s future is centered on creating a downtown. This should bring a fresh new vibe and pedestrian-friendly community in the middle of the largest commercial corridor. “The areas that we have identified as most conducive to this community are the currently dilapidated and under-utilized shopping centers on Route 18 South, right by the turnpike exit,” Cohen said. “We are moving forward in the first steps, which is to assemble all of the various properties. Plans call for commercial development with first-

floor, service oriented businesses, an office center, hotel and residential living.” A key component and draw of this redevelopment is centered on the township’s key location as the statistical center of the state with easy access to New York City, Jersey City, Newark and Philadelphia. With two township owned bus terminals, plus the creation of a third, this development is perfectly situated for an urban transportation center feel. “Usually transportation centers are directly focused on proximity to trains. However, our approach is distinctly different and provides for an opportunity for us to be leaders in bus centered of development,” Cohen said. “Our bus terminals already bring more commuters into New York City than all but four or five train stations, and with significant potential for growth, we see this as a key component and draw for people to want to come to an area where they will be able to live, work and play.” East Brunswick’s commercial corridor is already making a strong comeback, but this type of development will provide the catalyst to push that into overdrive. ■ By Cathy Cuthbertson

HEA LTHCARE

CONTINUUM OF CARE Treatment Close to Home

When an emergency arises, a complex procedure is needed or an annual physical is in order, health care providers in the township of East Brunswick are equipped to handle all of the above and so much more. Raritan Bay Medical Center-Old Bridge provides a growing array of health care services. With 113 beds, Hackensack Meridian Health Raritan Bay Medical Center-Old Bridge has provided acute inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical care for nearly 40 years. Raritan Bay Medical Center prides itself on patient- and family-centered care, an approach to the planning, delivery, and evaluation of health care that is grounded in mutually beneficial partnerships among health care providers, patients, and families. A state designated stroke center, Raritan Bay-Old Bridge is home to a fully integrated medical and surgical pavilion containing physician offices, a surgical suite, and outpatient testing; truly a single destination for every health care need. An additional medical arts building houses physicians specializing in family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, infectious disease, orthopedics, behavioral health, integrative health, and more. Raritan Bay Medical Center administration is committed to meeting the health care needs of the community, including attracting the best physicians in needed specialties, providing essential clinical services, and adding leading-edge medical technologies. In recent years, several enhancements have launched at Raritan Bay-Old Bridge, and planning is currently underway to complete a major emergency department expansion and facility renovation, with construction set to begin in 2019. Raritan Bay-Old Bridge is home to the da Vinci Xi®, a robotic assisted surgical system that enables surgeons to operate through a few small incisions. Designed to further advance minimally invasive surgery, the da Vinci Xi® can be used across a broad spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures including gynecology, urology, thoracic, and general surgery including colorectal surgery. The da Vinci Xi® allows for just a single incision or three to four 8mm incisions so patients benefit from less scarring, less of a need for pain medication, and quicker recovery for a shorter hospital stay. In light of the prevalence of diabetes and endocrine disorders in the community, Raritan Bay opened the Joslin Diabetes Center, Affiliate at Raritan Bay-Old Bridge. The Center provides screening, comprehensive care and management for a host of metabolic and endocrine disorders, including; diabetes, thyroid, PCOS, calcium, pituitary, adrenal disorders, low testosterone, hirsutism, and osteoporosis. It has been awarded the prestigious American Diabetes Association (ADA) Education Recognition Certificate for its high-quality diabetes self-management education program. The Center’s multidisciplinary team of caregivers includes two board certified endocrinologists, a certified nurse educator, and registered dietitian among others. Rounding out Raritan Bay-Old Bridge’s host of services is the Center for Sleep Medicine, Center for Balance, Center for Women, Institute for Weight Loss providing medical and surgical options for weight loss, Pulmonary Rehabilitation program, and Human Motion Institute, a comprehensive orthopedic program. With these services in place and more on the horizon, there is increasingly less reason for residents to travel far for expert health care. Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The GuidelinesStroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and its Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll Award – two of the highest honors that a center can receive from the organization for exceptional stroke care. The Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. RWJUH’s Comprehensive Stroke Center earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients should also receive education on managing their health; get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions. In addition, RWJUH’s Comprehensive Stroke Center also received the association’s Target: Stroke Elite Plus Honor Roll Award. To qualify for this recognition, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. “This honor is testament to the unwavering commitment to quality, pursuit of innovation and implementation of the most current, best practices to deliver the best possible outcomes for stroke patients in our state,” explains Kiwon Lee, MD, Chief of Neurology at RWJUH and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Medical Director of the RWJUH’s Comprehensive Stroke Center. “We are proud that the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association have recognized this commitment and we are equally proud to continue providing residents of our state the most advanced stroke care available anywhere in the nation.” RWJUH’s Comprehensive Stroke Center is certified by the Joint Commission. Joint Commission certification recognizes those hospitals that have state-of-the-art infrastructure, staff and training to receive and treat patients with the most complex strokes. RWJ underwent a rigorous on-site re-certification in the fall of 2017. Joint Commission experts reviewed RWJ’s compliance with the Comprehensive Stroke Center standards and requirements including advanced imaging capabilities, 24/7 availability of specialized treatments, and staff with the unique education and competencies to care for complex stroke patients. TRANSPORTATION

ON THE MOVE Getting From Point A to Point B Known as the statistical population center of New Jersey, East Brunswick has access to six major highways and its own bus terminal transporting people by the thousands to New York City daily. Transportation and roadways are vital for thriving in any community or metropolitan area. Just as transportation played a vital role in the township’s growth in the past, it’s significance remains today. East Brunswick occupies an excellent position on the most direct route to markets north and south, establishing it as a transportation hub. East Brunswick has multiple major roadways running through the township, including roughly 4 miles of Route 18. The northern part of Route 18 sees more than 100,000 vehicles per day. Numbers of that magnitude should not be surprising since the northern portion of Route 18 intersects with the New Jersey Turnpike and provides easy access to New York City, while the southern portion of Route 18 provides access to Philadelphia and the Jersey

Shore. Because of the town’s centralized location within the state, many find East Brunswick the perfect place to live and commute to work in NYC as well as Philadelphia. In light of the township’s highest volume of commuters, it should come as no surprise that East Brunswick owns its own bus terminals that transport thousands of commuters north-bound every day. “If our bus station was a train station, we would rank as the fifth largest train station going into NYC,” said East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen in regards to the township’s two bus stations. Cohen added that the demand for commuter transportation is so large the township has redevelopment plans to add a third bus station in the future. The volume of commercial and private traffic that these roads bring to East Brunswick is one of the key draws in the revitalization of the commercial corridor. Major national retailers like HomeGoods and Burlington are choosing to come to Route 18 in East Brunswick because it is one of the only commercial corridors in the state that has traffic visibility numbers that

high with an active consumer base living short distances away, according to Jonathan Sternesky, the Township’s Economic Development Officer. The stretch of Route 18 within the township, and its adjacent roads have supermarkets, movie theaters, and several shopping centers, the largest of which is Brunswick Square Mall, a 1-million square-foot shopping complex. Throughout 2017 and 2018, the Township added an average of two and half new businesses per month on these roads. In addition, the township recently announced improvement plans to a number of its roadways. Many of these roads connect or run parallel with major highways such as Route 18 and the Old Bridge Turnpike. East Brunswick with the assistance of state and county representatives has plans to makeover more than 10 of the towns most traveled roads. In addition to this work, the township has committed $1.7 million to township road improvements. In total, it is expected that approximately 14 to 15 miles of road will be repaved in 2018. ■ By Gennie Taylor

GOVERNMENT MAYOR BRAD COHEN Mayor Brad Cohen was elected to the office in November 2016. The Mayor began his public career in 2010 when he was elected to the East Brunswick Board of Education. Working with a dedicated group of Board members, he helped navigate the schools through difficult economic times in the wake of the Recession and the draconian cuts in State Aid. He was named Board President in 2014 and helped select the new Superintendent of Schools. Balancing fiscal responsibilities with massive needs in information technology, strategic planning, and infrastructure, the future Mayor chose to use his skills to improve the quality of life for all the resident of East Brunswick. The campaign of 2016 focused on property taxes, the abandoned Route 18 commercial corridor, and quality of life issues here in the township. Within a few months, the Mayor has recruited a professional team with the goal of addressing each of these needs. To date, he has spearheaded the “Shop East Brunswick” program which allows residents to obtain property tax credits for shopping in small stores in town. This has been followed by the “Estate Card” which also allows residents another option for property tax relief. There has been significant progress in defining areas in need of redevelopment on Route 18, and there are active talks regarding developing and implementing a “transit center” approach to the corridor. The township has employed an economic development officer to bring in new businesses and organize the business community. The Township has streamlined the Planning, Engineering, and Construction process in order to help move projects through faster and more efficiently. The Township has employed newer technology and applications to identify infrastructure needs anywhere in our 300 miles of roads. The Mayor is a 25 year resident of East Brunswick and is a practicing gynecologist with an office in neighboring Old Bridge Township. He lives with his wife, Pennyherself a Dermatologist in Somerset. He has two children, Rachel and Daniel who are both graduates of the East Brunswick Public School System (2006 and 2008). As a graduate of Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pa, UMDNJ (now Rutgers) New Jersey Medical School and Rutgers Business School, the Mayor holds an MD and MBA degree. The Mayor is an active member of Congregation Bnai Tikvah, North Brunswick and East Brunswick Jewish Center here in East Brunswick. “I am thrilled to represent such a large, diverse, talented, and tolerant community. We have such an exciting opportunity to

Councilwoman Clark stated that her goals remain the same as when she first took office 9 years ago. They are to use shared services and other cost sharing reduction methods to reduce the tax burden of our residents; to open communication and dialogue with the public; and to continue to serve in government with a spirit of sharing of ideas, a generosity of spirit and a willingness to cooperate. Her other civic activities included serving as a Board member of the Friends of the Library until her election and serving as an instructor for St. Bartholomew’s religious education program. She is an active participant in the Presidents Streets Neighborhood Watch where she resides with her two dogs. PUBLIC

SAFETY

HERE TO SERVE

Public Safety Officials Lend a Hand

East Brunswick is known for being one of the best places to call home in New Jersey. The township was even recognized as one of NJ Monthly magazine’s best towns. Just like any great locale, public safety is one the key elements that make a community thrive. With the exemplary services of East Brunswick’s Public Safety department, the township has seen great success. Statistics show that the work of the department has been paying off with an overall downward trend in crime based on data from 18 years with violent crime and property crime decreasing, accord-

ing to cityratings.com. The 2018 crime rate is expected to be even lower than that of 2016, according to the report. The East Brunswick Department of Public Safety is comprised of the police and fire departments and the rescue squad. James Conroy, chief of police, and his team are committed to providing professional services to the residents of East Brunswick, as well as administering the best police services to locals, businesses and visitors to the area. The township continues to make improvements to enhance public safety with initiatives like speed limit decreases on roadways. In the spring of 2018, the town reduced the speed limits on three of its high-traffic roadways following a comprehensive engineering and traffic evaluation.

The East Brunswick Rescue Squad offers emergency services to the community. In 2017, the squad responded to more than 2,400 calls. Aside from residents who need immediate attention, the squad participates in annual events and celebrations, community fairs, flu clinics and helps promote first aid awareness. The East Brunswick Fire Department houses three districts and eight stations within the township. The department responds immediately to myriad types of emergencies, including motor vehicle accidents, structural fires, brush fires, fire alarms and water rescues to name a few. Residents and business owners can feel safe when at home and at work. n By Gennie Taylor

A COMPREHENSIVE CHANNEL

EBTV

Access to Local Content

East Brunswick has its own television channel, called EBTV. The channel airs township meetings, high school sports, and provides information about municipal services, among other things. The channel is a municipal access channel, which is a bit different from public access, in that the programming is designed to benefit the town rather than simply showing public content.

How Does a Town Get a Cable Channel? “When a cable company wants to come into your town, they have to come up with an agreement with your township, and in most states, they are required to give the local town at least one channel.

Often, it’s two, one for municipal use and one for education. They provide the channel, and then the town has to provide the content,” said Dave Ambrosy, station manager at EBTV. In East Brunswick, there are two cable providers, Comcast and Verizon. For residents with Comcast service, EBTV is on channel 26. Verizon customers can find it on channels 37 and 38.

EBTV is More Than a Cable Channel For residents who have “cut the cord” with cable, EBTV is still available, because nearly all the same programming is also on the EBTV website, www.ebtv. org. “People can watch on a mobile device, or they could be in California and watch our township meeting live or access it at a later date and watch it,”

Ambrosy said. In addition to Comcast, Verizon and the EBTV website, some content is available on YouTube, and starting a few months ago, on Facebook Live. “Multiple platforms are changing how we distribute the content. Everything we produce and show on the cable channels go out in standard definition, but everything we put online is in high definition,” Ambrosy said. Local Business Involvement Although EBTV doesn’t run traditional advertising like for-profit channels do, local businesses do have the opportunity to sponsor the community bulletin board. “There’s a small fee to sponsor the bulletin board, and they get a banner ad for sponsoring,” Ambrosy said. n By Dava Stewart

RECREATION

GET INVOLVED! Find Numerous Ways to Play Helping to enrich the quality of life throughout the township of East Brunswick, its Department of Recreation, Parks & Community Services offers and develops affordable and engaging programs, activities, leisure opportunities and community resources. Starting with local youth, the department provides numerous athletic pursuits from which to choose. These programs include baseball and softball leagues, basketball, football and cheerleading, boys and girls lacrosse, as well as soccer and wrestling clubs, to name a few. Fun for the whole family, the department offers a calendar chock full of events year-round. Some of these highlights include East Brunswick’s Art & Music Festival, Children’s Concert, Outdoor Movie Under the Stars and the annual East Brunswick Day. While crafting exceptional recreational activities is a top priority, the department also hosts numerous events that stimulate the mind and entertain the soul. Early art adventures, ages 4 to 6, and art adventures, ages 7 to 12, allow children to express their creativity and create their very own masterpiece. Food funtastics, for ages 4 to 12, allow kids to channel their inner chef, while learning how to cook and navigate a kitchen. Likewise, youth also have the opportunity to freshen up their science, technology, engineering and math skills through Sylvan workshops, such as game design and robotics. Summer camps and programs are

extremely popular and entertaining when school is out. Offering chess, gymnastics, art, culinary opportunities and various athletic programs, children can make the most of their summer. Teens have a wealth of activities to participate in, including the junior police academy or the East Brunswick Youth Council. For students in high school, the council offers a safe environment with plenty of social activities and individual leadership opportunities, such as community service, youth advocating for animals and environmental. Adults get in on the action too. Some of the fitness programs include Zumba with toning, mat Pilates, yoga, adult tennis lessons, a pickleball club and co-ed beach volleyball. The department also provides the opportunity for adults to learn a new skill that could help others in need, like becoming certified in CPR/ AED/First Aid or gain awareness and understanding about the prevention of alcoholism and drug abuse. Activities for those with special needs are also available. The Daisy Recreation Summer Program offers day camps for children and adults with special needs that stimulate growth and development of social, emotional, behavioral and communication skills. Days are spent filled with activities like exploring nature, athletics, art and ice cream sundae parties. Thursdays at Daisy is another social setting for teens and young adults. Here, individuals can play games, dance, make arts and crafts, all while building lifelong friendships. On top of everything the department offers, there are also

CHA MBER

OF

COMMERCE

REVITALIZING BUSINESS Chamber Helps Foster Partnerships It’s a fresh start as the newly chartered East Brunswick Regional Chamber of Commerce begins an exciting year, energizing the community, businesses and the township around the theme of progressive economic development. “It’s a very important milestone for business, the township of East Brunswick and everyone who lives here,” said Frank Baeli, Chamber president. “The Chamber was just chartered in 2017 and we’ve spent several months laying the foundation for our work and vision. We’re extremely grateful for the forwardthinking leadership of the township. They are the driving force that launched the Chamber.” Focusing on community and diversity, the Chamber will organize and host community events, educational forums, networking hours, fundraisers and collaborative efforts

that unite citizens with business and government. Nearly 100 members strong and growing rapidly, recent events are enjoying excellent support and attendance, signaling a strong outlook for future success. “Nearly 150 attended the gala celebration in January when the rollout of the Chamber was announced,” Baeli said. “We invited a representative of Middlesex County government and East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen as guest speakers. Most of the conversation that night themed around economic development and creating programs that will bring more businesses to the community.” Much more is in store. In the fall, the Chamber will be front and center at the annual East Brunswick Township Day celebration. “We have negotiated a good partnership with the township to serve as the headline sponsor for the event,” Baeli said. “It’s an outdoor event at the East Brunswick Community Art

Center. Local businesses set up exhibits at the vendor’s fair, youth councils hold fundraisers, and there’s food and entertainment and a host of activities and performances. Everyone comes out to enjoy the day.” The Chamber is gearing up to find the perfect office space, hire a small staff and grow its membership base. As momentum gains steam — revitalizing and strengthening the community — members will have opportunities to grow too, putting their names, products and services in the spotlight whether advertising in Chamber newsletters and marketing materials or serving as sponsors and hosts at special events, and ultimately getting involved in Chamber committees and leadership. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for businesses to get involved and stay proactive,” Baeli said. “In partnership with government and nonprofits, the Chamber and its members are keeping compass pointed in a pro-business direction.” ■ By Cathy Cuthbertson

SHOP

A REWARDING EXPERIENCE

Keeping Dollars in East Brunswick Shopping locally is a great way for residents to help their own local economy by keeping money flowing through their community. It is even better when residents get something back for shopping local, and that is exactly what the township of East Brunswick decided to do in 2017 when they began their Shop Local Initiatives, first, with the Shop East Brunswick Rewards Card and then with the Estate Card. “We have had the Shop EB Program active since last summer,” said Jonathan Sternesky, the township’s Economic Development Officer. “In that time, we have had thousands of transactions. The average rebate per swipe has been $3.76, but in some recent months, the average rebate per swipe has been over $8.” How does it work? The Shop East Brunswick Rewards Card, when used at participating businesses, will save a percentage of the purchase. The participating vendors determine the set percentage they will offer when they sign up. All savings are accumulated throughout the year and are applied toward property taxes in the summer. Renters and out-of-towners can also participate by requesting their rebate be sent in the form of a yearly check. “Every time you shop, 5 to 10 percent of your purchase will accumulate in your card in the form of a rebate,” Sternesky said. “There was a study done in 2003 which showed that for every dollar spent locally or at a local establishment, nearly 45 percent of that revenue will stay in the local community. In contrast, at a chain, only 14 percent of revenue stays local. Part of the motivation behind doing this program is that it has been shown shopping locally keeps the money in the local economy at rates three times higher than shopping at a chain.” Moreover, the numerous benefits continue to roll in for East Brunswick. “These programs have brought hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue into the local economy,” Sternesky said. “We anticipate that those who consistently use their cards at participating businesses will see a noticeable reduction in their property taxes.” n By Brooke Payne

SWIPE FOR SAVINGS Perks with Property Tax

There is no cost to the taxpayers, and local and online spending at participating merchants earn cardholders an even larger reward amount. Overall, there are three levels of rewards. First, a base amount of reward is earned on every transaction. Second, while shopping locally at participating

merchants, a bonus amount is earned, typically around 10 percent of the transaction. Third, when shopping online, a bonus amount is also earned, which varies but is typically 3 percent-6 percent of the transaction. “We don’t want to take away from shopping locally because of the online reward, we want people to maximize on their property tax savings” said Eli Weingarden, CEO of Municipal Cards LLC, the contracted administrator of the program. “There are things that people don’t typically buy locally, like airfare, they can earn rewards for those type of things as well through this program.” The rebates are an innovative way of reducing taxes and promoting local businesses. Both programs are free to East Brunswick residents. If you wish to participate in one of the programs as either a resident or participating business, please call Jonathan Sternesky at (732) 390-6816. LOOKING OUT FOR THE COMMUNITY Providing Unmatched Services to East Brunswick Public services are crucial to any community, and East Brunswick enjoys particularly efficient and innovative service through the Department of Public Works. There are eight separate divisions included in the department. Water and sewer are both rate-based services, and roads, snow and ice control, vehicle maintenance, building maintenance, solid waste and recycling are all municipal tax based services.

KEEPING YOU MOVING Whether a person needs to get to work or seeks medical care, they can’t get there easily without smooth, ice and snow-free roads to travel. “For ice control, we apply salt brine before storms as a preventative. We also use the brine to supplement the regular granular salt during storms. We’re known for our use of the brine,” said Daniel Losik, director of the Department of Public Works. Keeping the roads clear is important

but so is maintenance. Potholes are dangerous, and in East Brunswick they are repaired quickly. The type of asphalt mix used in making repairs is important. “In terms of roads, we do quality repairs. We have the ability to make a hot mix year ‘round and don’t use cold mix,” Losik said.

DRINK AND BATHE SAFELY Water quality and safety has become a concern in recent years for many people. Residents of East Brunswick have nothing to worry about when it comes to their water. “We are responsible for distribution and maintenance of water, and sewer collections. Water testing is performed according to New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection requirements. We perform extensive water quality testing,” Losik said.

THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT East Brunswick residents enjoy the convenience of curbside pickup of solid waste and recyclables, but the Department of Public Works goes two steps farther by offering a helpful app and a recycling center that is designated a convenience center. The app, called MyWaste, is available for free on both Android and IOS platforms and allows residents to do things like set reminders for waste collection, or to query how to dispose of specific materials. “We can also use it to push out notifications, so that if something happens, like a storm and there will ¥be late pick up, we can let people know,” Losik said. Residents can drop off most things at the recycling center, with the exception of construction debris. Another unique service is the compost facility. The leaves and brush collected by the department is processed and turned into compost, which is available to local gardeners for free in the spring. ■ By Dava Stewart

SOLUTIONS TO STORMWATER POLLUTION Easy Things You Can Do Every Day to Protect Our Water A Guide to Healthy Habits for Cleaner Water Pollution on streets, parking lots and lawns is washed by rain into storm drains, then directly to our drinking water supplies and the ocean and lakes our children play in. Fertilizer, oil, pesticides, detergents, pet waste, grass clippings: You name it and it ends up in our water. Stormwater pollution is one of New Jersey’s greatest threats to clean and plentiful water, and that’s why we’re all doing something about it. By sharing the responsibility and making small, easy changes in our daily lives, we can keep common pollutants out of stormwater. It all adds up to cleaner water, and it saves the high cost of cleaning up once it’s dirty. As part of New Jersey’s initiative to keep our water clean and plentiful and to meet federal requirements, many municipalities and other public agencies including colleges and military bases must adopt ordinances or other rules prohibiting various activities that contribute to stormwater pollution. Breaking these rules can result in fines or other penalties. As a resident, business, or other member of the New Jersey community, it is important to know these easy things you can do every day to protect our water.

Limit Your Use of Fertilizers and Pesticides • Do a soil test to see if you need a fertilizer. • Do not apply fertilizers if heavy rain is predicted. • Look into alternatives for pesticides. • Maintain a small lawn and keep

the rest of your property or yard in a natural state with trees and other native vegetation that requires little or no fertilizer. • If you use fertilizers and pesticides, follow the instructions on the label on how to correctly apply it.

Properly Use and Dispose of Hazardous Products • Hazardous products include some household or commercial cleaning products, lawn and garden care products, motor oil, antifreeze, and paints. • Do not pour any hazardous products down a storm drain because storm drains are usually connected to local waterbodies and the water is not treated. • If you have hazardous products in your home or workplace, make sure you store or dispose of them properly. Read the label for guidance. • Use natural or less toxic alternatives when possible. • Recycle used motor oil. • Contact your municipality, county or facility management office for the locations of hazardous-waste disposal facilities.

Keep Pollution Out Of Storm Drains • Municipalities and many other public agencies are required to mark certain storm drain inlets with messages reminding people that storm drains are connected to local waterbodies. • Do not let sewage or other wastes flow into a stormwater system.

Clean Up After Your Pet • Many municipalities and public agencies must enact and enforce local pet-waste rules. • An example is requiring pet owners or their keepers to pick up and properly dispose of pet waste dropped on public or other people’s property. • Makesureyouknow your town’s or agency’s requirements and comply

with them. It’s the law. And remember to: - Use newspaper, bags or pooper- scoopers to pick up wastes. - Dispose of the wrapped pet waste in the trash or un- wrapped in a toilet. - Never discard pet waste in a storm drain.

Don’t Feed Wildlife • Do not feed wildlife, such as ducks and geese, in public areas. • Many municipalities and other public agencies must enact and enforce a rule that prohibits wildlife feeding in these areas.

Don’t Litter • Place litter in trash receptacles. • Recycle. Recycle. Recycle. • Participate in community cleanups.

Dispose of Yard Waste Properly • Keep leaves and grass out of storm drains. • If your municipality or agency has yard waste collectionrules, follow them. • Use leaves and grass clippings as a resource for compost. • Use a mulching mower that recycles grass clippings into the lawn.

PUBLIC

LIBRARY

READ ALL ABOUT IT

The East Brunswick Public Library is a vital community resource for the whole family. From those who enjoy reading for pleasure, to students researching class assignments, and nearly everyone in between, the library is the place where residents come together. “We have an amazing collection of books, movies, music and magazines in our library,” said Jennifer Podolsky, library director. “Through our website — www. ebpl.org — we offer thousands of additional books, movies, graphic novels, documentaries, audiobooks and magazines digitally that you can access on your computer, smartphone or tablet.” In addition to its extensive collection of books, magazines and ebooks, the library is also known for its knowledgeable staff and outstanding customer service. “What makes our library so special is our staff, who all are dedicated to providing top-notch customer service, whether it be helping you find something in our library or researching on your behalf. They also put together special events and programs, ranging from storytimes to musical performances to author visits to lectures featuring experts in their field,” Podolsky said. “Our library is one of the busiest in Middlesex County, providing something for everyone. There is something for any

age at the library — playtimes for infants and preschoolers, crafting programs for children, volunteering opportunities for teens, even crafting and cooking clubs for adults.” The library can be a one-stop shop for many needs, including copying, fax, notary, passports, printing, proctoring and scanning services. For those who need access to technology services, the library offers computer training classes, device borrowing, multilingual computing, public computers and wireless internet access. In addition to the traditional and standard services that can be found at a library, East Brunswick offers several different resources. Just for the Health of It is East Brunswick Public Library’s prescription for the best health and wellness information around town. Librarians are trained by the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health to help customers find information and research any medical or health-related topic. The Business Resource Connection joins small business, entrepreneurs and job seekers within Middlesex County to vital resources, training and networking opportunities to help them thrive. The library has partnered with the New Jersey Department of Labor to be a New Jersey Career Connections site, providing job seekers with career training and other

resources. Through a partnership with the Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission, East Brunswick has a seed library that customers can use to start their garden and resources to make it successful. One of the most exciting developments at the library is the EB Create Makerspace. This addition enables more collaboration and hands-on learning opportunities for the community, and features various technology equipment, art and crafting amenities. Likewise, the makerspace room boasts computer stations available for graphic design and video editing. There is also a recording studio. Patrons can also borrow items from the makerspace if desired. “Our customers always want more active learning opportunities and access to technology, and our EB Create makerspace allows us to provide both to the community,” Podolsky said. “Whether you are looking to use a sewing machine or our audio/ video editing workstations, EB Create gives you the opportunity to use this equipment independently or through a group training class. You can also check out several lendable kits that you can borrow. Our library is unique, as you can check out a Go Pro video camera, a museum pass or even a ukulele for the weekend.” n By Sarah Lancaster

CENTER

RETIRING IN STYLE

SENIOR

Quality of Life At Any Age Older adults and retirees make the most of their golden years with ample ways to remain active right here in East Brunswick. The township’s department on aging caters to the needs of residents who are age 60 or older.

Through the department’s extremely active senior center, locals can participate in myriad programs, activities and trips. The center offers health, fitness and wellness programs, opportunities to meet new friends, special events and luncheons, volunteer opportunities, discussion and support groups, social and recreational activities, life-long learning, personal services, public benefit counseling, information and assistance, transportation, educational and arts programming, intergenerational programs and affordable and tasty lunches. “I would encourage someone to join our center here in East Brunswick because it is so much more than what one would think of when they hear

‘senior center.’ We prefer to say it is an active adult activity center for residents age 60 and over,” said Danielle Micale, director of the township of East Brunswick’s Department on Aging. “It is a way for individuals to remain connected, active and informed. According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, getting out of the house most days of the week may help older adults live longer. Healthy relationships are important throughout the lifespan, but even more so in later life. Our center offers a holistic approach to longevity; creating numerous opportunities to maintain physical, mental and emotional health.” The center, which is located adjacent to the East Brunswick Public Library, houses a computer room, a game room, a spacious multipurpose room, an art room and cozy areas for lounging and talking with friends. In the cafe, hot lunches, sandwiches and soup are served daily. “An enticing aspect of our center is the diversity of programming. We provide an array of activities in order to meet the varied interests and needs of

our participants,” Micale said. “Some of these programs include, but are not limited to, physical fitness classes for all levels, intergenerational activities, educational programs, health/wellness lectures and screenings, film/book discussions, musical activities, arts and crafts, support groups, special events such as parties, bus trips and much more.” Free transportation to and from the center is offered daily, as well as weekly local trips for such things as shopping, errands and lunch for our registered participants. In addition, the center also coordinates local medical transportation for participants within East Brunswick Township for a nominal fee. Moreover, East Brunswick Department on Aging also offers counseling, information and assistance to residents of East Brunswick and their families on aging related issues, as well as coordinate the East Brunswick Senior Meals Program to eligible homebound older adult residents. For those looking to remain physically, mentally and socially active, the senior center is free of charge to join. ■ By Sarah Lancaster
