he Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce is proud to present the Cottage Grove Community Guide. This impressive publication highlights the community of Cottage Grove along with the businesses that call the Cottage Grove area home. The support of our membership and those who advertised made this guide possible. Please patronize their businesses and help our local economy grow. The Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce is a strong and growing organization made up of local businesses, service and community organizations; local government; and private citizens dedicated to support, promote and lead business and the community of Cottage Grove. We are extremely excited to roll out our Cottage Grove FIRST campaign encouraging residents and visitors to discover and connect with local businesses and then repeat. A convenient foldout of all Chamber businesses and their locations is found at the center of this guide. Cottage Grove is a community on the move. Businesses and people continue to locate here and make Cottage Grove their home. The reasons for both groups are clear; the proximity to major cities such as Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago, combined with the benefits of small-town Wisconsin offer an opportunity few communities can match. Another area of growth in Cottage Grove is sports tourism. Three top-tier golf courses, an expanding sports complex, multiple parks and the Glacial Drumlin trail provide residents and visitors the ability to get on the move themselves and enjoy Cottage Grove’s resources. Our goal is to engage and assist you whether you are a resident or visitor. I encourage you to visit www.cottagegrovechamber.com, or find us on Facebook. We provide information on local businesses and timely updates on community and Chamber events. We hope to see you at one of our many events this year. Enjoy all that our wonderful community has to offer! Sincerely,
Mike Millage

olling farm fields of south central Wisconsin in the heart of Dane County make Cottage Grove a scenic wonderland. Cottage Grove is made up of both the Town of Cottage Grove and the Village of Cottage Grove. The Township was surveyed in 1834. It became a separate township in 1849, and was originally settled by Yankees, Pennsylvania Dutch, Scottish-Irish, Irish, Norwegians and Germans. A settlement grew up around Beecher stage coach tavern at a junction of two main roads. Farming went from wheat to dairy. Today families with non-farm small businesses out number dairy farmers. Housing developments were first permitted in 1970 and new ones were banned in 1980. The village was created when the railroad went through in 1881. This was a shipping center for farm goods until the advent of semitrucks. The railroad tracks east of the village have become the Glacial Drumlin bike trail. The railroad tracks going through Madison have seen increasing grain shipments. The village was incorporated in 1924. Previously the village had two business districts, one south of the tracks serving the village through the 1960s the other was above the pond on the north side of the tracks, now vanished. The current business district and town center is along Highway BB.

FAMOUS RESIDENTS
Cottage Grove resident William Robert Taylor (July 10, 1820-March 17, 1909) was an American politician and the 12th Governor of Wisconsin from 1874 to 1876. Taylor was born in Woodbury, Connecticut. He was orphaned at age 6 when his father’s ship was lost at sea; his mother had died when he was an infant. He then lived with his guardians in Jefferson County, New York. He moved to Ohio where he taught school, studied medicine and served in the local militia. In 1848 he moved to a farm in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. He served as president of the Dane County Agricultural Society and the State Agricultural Society. He served in the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1855 and the Wisconsin State Senate 1859-1860, and was elected to one term as Wisconsin’s governor at the head of the “Reform” or “People’s Reform” party, a short-lived coalition of Democrats, reform and Liberal Republicans and Grangers. Taylor died in a nursing home in Burke, Wisconsin, at age 88. More recently two Cottage Grove athletes have gained the spotlight: Jesse Vetter and Gabe Carimi. Growing up with three brothers, Vetter became a goaltender by default. Older brothers Jake and Joey and younger brother Jonnie needed someone to play goalie in street hockey, so they’d dress Jessie up in the gear and have her stand in the net. Though at that time, she hadn’t yet mastered the position. “Basically I was the shooter tutor at that age because they shot it too quick,” she said, referring to a training device placed in front of the net with five holes to practice shooting. “I was definitely forced into playing goaltender at that age and now I’m happy that they did it because I really enjoy the position.”

A standout athlete at Monona Grove High School, Vetter played mainly with the boys’ teams. She was named the Monona Grove varsity team’s MVP in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Attending UW Wisconsin, Vetter played for coach Mark Johnson, a member of the 1980 Miracle on Ice team who is now the women’s national team head coach. When Johnson was named the coach, Vetter told her U.S. teammates that he was the right man for the job, something they quickly agreed on. “His teams are so successful because he keeps it so relaxed and you have fun,” Vetter said of Johnson. She had appearances and three titles (2006, 2007, and 2009). Vetter finished with 39 career shutouts, a .941 save percentage and 91 total wins, all NCAA records. Her senior year, Vetter won the 2009 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, given to the nation’s top women’s player. In her first season with the Badgers, as a redshirt freshman, Vetter became the first freshman and goalie to be named the NCAA Frozen Four’s Most Outstanding Player. Vetter made her Olympic debut in Vancouver after winning the world title with the U.S. team in 2008 and 2009. Vetter played in both championship games, winning a shootout in 2008 by stopping all six shots she faced. Known for her easygoing nature, Vetter was a key player winning the 2010 U.S. silver medal in Canada. In the 2011 IIHF Women’s World Championship against Canada, Vetter made 51 saves as the US won its third consecutive gold medal. Carimi attended high school at Monona Grove and during his senior year was voted a football Parade All-American and Prep Star All-American while he captained the team. He was also the Capital Times and Wisconsin State Journal Player of the Year, first-team all-state in 2005, a first-team selection by the Associated Press and the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association (as a two-way player), and was twice first-team all-conference.
After high school, Carimi attended the University of Wisconsin and became a starter on the offensive line immediately as a freshman. As a senior, Carimi won the 2010 Outland Trophy, awarded to the nation’s top collegiate interior lineman, and also was named the Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year, a unanimous Consensus AllAmerican, an American Football Coaches Association All-American, and a Walter Camp first team All-American. Carimi was drafted in the first round with the 29th overall selection of the 2011 NFL draft by the Chicago Bears. In June 2013,
“His teams are so successful because he keeps it so relaxed and you have fun.” the Bears traded Carimi to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and in 2014 he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons. For more information on the rich history of Cottage Grove, visit the Cottage Grove Area Historical Society (CGAHS). The historical society had its beginnings in 1976 when local residents were asked to contribute local history for Americas Bicentennial celebration. These individuals continued to meet and discuss the area’s history. In January 1989, the group became a nonprofit organization and obtained tax-exempt status. With these qualifications, the CGAHS became eligible as an affiliate of Wisconsin’s State Historical Society. The CGAHS archives are located in the basement of Flynn Hall. The CGAHS typically meets at Flynn Hall at 1 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. To see more of the society’s activities, visit Facebook:www.facebook.com/CGWIAHS.

ottage Grove has been enjoying a dynamic business boom over the past 20 years. It started out as a rural agricultural community, historically serving the locals with small retail businesses and family-owned restaurants. Today Cottage Grove boasts a diversified collection of businesses from aspiring entrepreneurs to a North American headquarters for a global firm. With the exciting recent addition of a large commercial park, Cottage Grove has welcomed a variety of new corporate businesses to the landscape, including Stihl and Johnson Health Tech. With that, came many new jobs across the area. This modernization allows for continued growth with more positive change on the horizon. Cottage Grove has a prime spot on the map for any corporate operation, with its location conveniently situated at the intersection of interstates 90 and 94. Bordering Madison, Cottage Grove is one hour from Milwaukee and two hours from downtown Chicago. This proximity to major cities has drawn these larger companies to set up shop in Cottage Grove. Cottage Grove has been quite proud to welcome so many new companies, said Erin Ruth, director of planning and development. The addition of a new commerce park brought on a burst of business, like the Midwest distribution center of major tool and power equipment manufacturer, Stihl, and the North American headquarters for the global fitness equipment company, Johnson

Health Tech. Large corporations see the village’s closeness to the highway as an unmistakably major asset. “Our location is an element we really try to push, as well as the easy access off the freeway and the high quality we can offer as far as the design of the park and the environment,” Ruth noted. After analyzing many options, Johnson Health Tech chose Cottage Grove because of its close proximity to Madison, as well as the convenient location to Interstates 90 and 94, said Becky Quick, the company’s human resources director. “The location enables us to recruit top talent from the Madison area, including Cottage Grove and the surrounding communities,” Quick said. “With a large amount of product being shipped in and out on a daily basis, it was important for us to be close to the interstate in order to best service our customers.” In addition, getting in on the ground floor of the commercial park development had its benefits, Quick noted. Cottage Grove was easy to work with throughout the construction project and provided Johnson Health Tech with tax advantages for their business. Within the past several years, new incoming businesses, such as a health clinic and day care provider also have opened their doors, expanding the business community beyond the commerce park, while also diversifying the services Cottage Grove provides to its residents. A tremendous amount of credit goes to local developers Homburg Inc. and R.G. Huston Company, who have assisted Cottage Grove with its continuing successful development. According to a 2015 study conducted by Vierbicher and Associates, Cottage Grove is a prime market for aspiring entrepreneurs. Local demand exceeds supply across many services and industries. Strong support from the local chamber of commerce and government combined with a loyal and eager customer base provides the perfect environment to launch a business. Businesses that have recently seized this opportunity and opened their doors in Cottage Grove include Cottage Grove Eye Care, Arboretum Music School, Stutz Photography, Odyssey Dance Studio and Doughboys Pizza. In addition to their business success all the owners are active in the community. The Cottage Grove Chamber recently launched the Cottage Grove FIRST campaign. The 130 members of the chamber

are highlighting the importance of frequenting local businesses, which leads to money cycling back into the community. Still in its first year of existence, the campaign is drawing awareness to the types of services, dining and retail available in Cottage Grove. Future development will likely take place on the north side of Cottage Grove concentrated around the access to interstates 90 and 94. Location will no doubt play a large role in attracting businesses with the growing population and an easy planning and development process added bonuses. Employees of businesses in Cottage Grove enjoy a wonderful quality of life with close proximity to biking and walking trails, golf courses and convenient access to major roadways. The completion of the bike trail connecting Glacial Drumlin State Trail to the Capitol Trail will allow easy and enjoyable bicycle commuting to or from Cottage Grove. These recreation opportunities allow employees to enjoy an active and healthy lifestyle right outside their company’s door. The business climate in Cottage Grove is exciting and positive. Chamber of Commerce President Mike Millage sums up Cottage Grove’s business environment: “Now is an exciting time for everyone in Cottage Grove with the ongoing business development. Cottage Grove’s business community has energy right now and continues to build momentum. I am excited to see what happens in the next few years.”

ottage Grove’s population has experienced a dramatic 500% growth rate since 1990 – one of the highest in Wisconsin. According to Kyle Broom, owner of Badger Realty in Cottage Grove, the reason for this major surge is Cottage Grove’s top-notch school district, the potential for larger lot sizes and opportunities for new construction and future expansion. “Cottage Grove offers
the unique ability to live in a new and growing subdivision or out in the country on acreage within the same community.” Broom said of moving to Cottage Grove. With plenty of room to grow, the village is equipped to comfortably welcome much more growth and hopes to continue seeing people put down roots in Cottage Grove.

Kindred Hearts offers assisted living and memory care. Within a 10-minute drive of downtown Cottage Grove is Oak Park Place and Westminster Senior Apartments. Oak Park Place offers residents the full continuum of care, including independent living at The Arbors, assisted living in The Grove and memory care at Autumn Lane. Each place is designed for residents to maintain and enhance their active lifestyle. Westminster Senior Apartments offer residents affordable senior apartments for rent and many social activities. The Cottage Grove Triad consists of Cottage Grove seniors and the Cottage Grove Police Department, whose sole purpose is to promote senior issue awareness and safety, and to reduce the fear of crime. Since 2004, the Triad has offered about a dozen educational programs a year for seniors and their adult children. Currently the Cottage Grove Triad is the sponsoring organization leading Cottage Grove toward becoming a dementia-friendly community. The Triad is training local business leaders and their employees, which will increase businesses awareness of early onset dementia in their customers and clients. For additional information on the project, the Cottage Grove Triad and Triad programs, call Diane at (608) 839-8588 or visit http://cottagegrovetriad.org.

ottage Grove is excited to embark on the next phase of growth in its already established sports tourism industry. Madison United Rugby (MUR) and Cottage Grove have partnered to establish The Rugby Sports Complex, Phase 1, of which MUR invested over $1 million to build and maintain two rugby and soccer fields. MUR’s Phase 2 goals include developing a new financially self-sufficient multipurpose facility without the need to borrow money for construction or the need for large annual public funding for sustainability. Five years of research and site visits around the world have resulted in the design of an inspiring multipurpose education, health and wellness, and sports facility, with additional spectator seating. Because rugby will be at most a 20 percent user of the facilities, 80 percent of the available time can support education, recreation, community and business programming. The plans developed by architect Pat Schmitt include an internationally significant museum, library and archives focused on the 19th century origins of American sports. These historic resources feature the firstever U.S. Women’s Sports History collection and the U.S. Rugby History collection, including the origins of American football. This resource will be a destination for school field trips, with additional curriculum support for teachers. Furthermore, UW-Madison students and professors will use the resources, programming and facilities for research. A further goal will be to host evening, adult-educational programing events featuring both sport and non-sport related topics. The planned building will also include amenities for hosting conferences, such as banquet seating for 300, catering kitchen, large trade show areas, break-out rooms and an audiovisual presentation room. The goals are to meet the conference needs of local businesses and to attract regional and national education, nonprofit,
and sports conferences and coaching clinics. Adjoining the banquet room will be an easilyseparated bar and lounge area. These features will also attract a wide variety of community events, including Lion’s club fundraisers, weddings, reunions and birthday celebrations. In addition, area residents will have the chance to socialize with international athletes and visitors. The four locker rooms and large multi-purpose room will support a wealth of health and wellness activities for people of all ages. Situated on the recently approved connection of the Glacial Drumlin Bike Trail and the Capitol City State trail into Madison, these facilities will be the most bikefriendly in the country and will attract regional to national cycling events. In addition, any sports organization playing at Bakken Park or at other area recreational sites will be invited to become members of the new facility. Most importantly, this new building, with increased seating, will allow MUR to bid on national and international rugby events. Cottage Grove has already been designated as the permanent site of the Wisconsin Boys State High School Rugby Championships. Moreover, the site has the capacity to anually host a wide variety of Sweet 16, Elite Eight and Final Four rugby tournaments at all levels. Increased seating could also allow the community to host larger events, such as a concert during the Fireman’s Festival. The new facility and its events will bring an exponential surge in sports tourism to benefit Cottage Grove in many ways. Madison United Rugby has pledges from the rugby community toward the construction of the building and toward the museum, library and archives. With the additional funding support of area businesses, foundations, community organizations and individuals, MUR’s vision is within reach. For more information, visit http:// rugbymadison.org/sports-complex.

The Door Creek Dental practice has roots in the community dating back to the mid-1960s. Dr. Paul Appel arrived in Madison from the University of Iowa and started his practice on Monona Drive. His practice moved to Cottage Grove Road in Madison in the mid-1970s. In 1994, Dr. Scott Kirkpatrick began to work with Dr. Appel and became owner in 1997 with his retirement.
