THE PATH TO

Shelter Hope PET SHOP

he journey to Shelter Hope Pet Shop started in 2008 when animal activist Kim Sill spent an entire year protesting and investigating pet shops selling puppy mill dogs. With over five million dogs killed at America’s shelters every year, Kim focused her attention on working with pet shop owners throughout Southern California to convert their stores into adoption centers for rescue animals. In 2011, Kim opened her own humane pet store, Shelter Hope Pet Shop in Janss Marketplace, and has since helped to re-home over 1,500 animals. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Shelter Hope is a largely volunteer and charity-based organization. “I was really scared that this concept would not be a sustainable business model,” states Sill. “I had worked with many similar shops that had failed but after I moved to Thousand Oaks, I realized that the key to a successful animal shelter shop is a community that is willing and able to help.” Since its opening, Shelter Hope has seen an outpouring of volunteers who help keep the adoption center running five days a week. Volunteers spend their shifts walking, grooming and

socializing the dogs, helping with laundry to keep the bedding and toys fresh and creating events to help raise donations. One of the largest charitable contributions has come from NewMark Merrill, the parent company of Janss Marketplace, who generously donated the storefront in one of the busiest shopping locations in the Thousand Oaks community. Having this storefront in a prime location enables Shelter Hope to provide a fun, friendly environment where visitors and volunteers can easily interact with animals needing adoption. Besides being a rescue center, Shelter Hope also sells pet merchandise where 100 percent of the profits go directly to saving the lives of homeless pets. Several organizations have also stepped up to help support Shelter Hope, including: Camp Bow Wow in Agoura Hills who donates their kennel space to house the shelter dogs at night; Camino Animal Clinic who handles all the veterinary care at a highly discounted rate; Girl Scouts who make blankets and dog toys; Indiana Bones and the Temple of Groom who donate

grooming services as well as a free grooming to the new parents; Diana Lundin and Lexie Boezeman Cataldo who take photos of the dogs and post them on social media and a group of donors who created a calendar so that Shelter Hope could sell them and use the profits to raise money for monthly spay and neuter days.

So just how busy is Shelter Hope? Currently the store has over 40 monthly adoptions and saves an additional 40 to 50 dogs from death row throughout California. There are also many other rescue situations which Shelter Hope helps with on a daily basis, such as residents who are forced to downsize and cannot take their pet with them or families who cannot afford to put their dying pet to sleep. Shelter Hope also aids those serving in the military by sponsoring their adoption fee. After seeing the success of this location, Kim has now franchised the business model and opened up locations in Sacramento and Santa Clarita. Katherine Heigl helping to raise awareness for Shelter Hope’s film premiere.

Most recently, Kim directed Saved in America, an independent documentary-style film which shows the journey of Shelter Hope and the challenges that animals face in America’s shelter system. Kim met many people on her journey including Pink, Cesar Millan, Dr. Phil, Kim Kardashian and Katherine Heigl who all make appearances in the film to help raise awareness. The film also highlights two very special Shelter Hope volunteers: Larry Cole and Rachel Perlmutter. Larry is a retired Thousand Oaks resident and Vietnam War veteran who received the volunteer-of-the-year award for his tireless dedication to helping Shelter Hope. Rachel, a 12-year Oak Park resident, received $500 in scholarship funds for her volunteer work and even convinced her family to help by fostering shelter puppies. So far the family has helped save 70 puppies. When Saved in America premiered in August 2015, the Regency Theatre in Agoura Hills generously allowed the film to run for seven days straight. During this time, Shelter Hope raised enough money to cover their vet bills for an entire month. Sill hopes that after watching the film, people will give back locally and help their own community. entura County and the region around Conejo Valley have occupied, and continue to occupy, a hallowed place in the history and ongoing production of oil in the western United States. Indeed, even before the first European settlers arrived in the region, the indigenous Chumash people used oil that oozed from the ground as a sealant for their watercraft and containers. In 1854, seven years before the advent of the Civil War, Ventura County records indicate that oil dug from shallow pits near Sulphur Mountain was being refined in small refineries that were really nothing more than homemade stills. While Humboldt County lays claim to being the site of the first oil well drilled in California, the Ventura County Planning Department actually shows that George Shoobridge Gilbert began oil production at Sulphur Mountain in Ojai, California in 1861. Gilbert is also credited with building the first refinery in the Ojai Valley that was capable of producing between 300 and 400 gallons of refined oil per week. Although many of these early ventures were not financially successful, and therefore didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t thrive, early pioneers like Gilbert laid the foundation for what is today a vibrant economic engine that produces more than 9 million barrels of crude oil each year. While that volume of oil pales when compared to

the 146 million barrels produced annually in Kern County, it still provides an enormous economic boost to the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economy and public services.

According to a recent study by the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, the oil industry in Ventura County supports close to 9,000 direct and indirect jobs. More than 4,300 of those jobs are directly linked to oil production in the

county that pay an average of $163,000 per year. “These are the types of high-paying jobs that support a vibrant middle class and contribute to strong, stable communities,” said Catherine Reheis-Boyd, President of the Western States Petroleum Association that commissioned the study. Oil production and related activities also contribute more than $2 billion to the county’s total economic output. Government services also benefit mightily from the county’s oil sector. In 2013, state and local government agencies received more than $444 million in taxes and fees generated by the oil industry. The workforce that supports the oil industry on the Central Coast – a region that includes Ventura County – is very diverse, according to the LAEDC. Almost half the workforce is nonwhite, with Hispanics or Latinos comprising 33.6 percent of the workers and 26 percent of the workers are women. The study also highlighted the opportunities that are afforded by a robust petroleum industry for blue collar and non-college graduates. In 2013, close to 40 percent of the industry’s workforce had an education level of high school or less, almost 30 percent had some college or an associate’s degree and 20 percent had earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. The data is clear. A strong petroleum sector provides high-paying jobs for a diverse population, which leads to strong communities. But what about the health of those communities and the air and water they depend on? The oil industry, in an era of heightened sensitivity around air and water quality issues, is just as sensitive to those issues because the men and women who make up the industry in Ventura County depend on and enjoy those same resources. The good news is the region’s air quality continues to improve despite rapid population growth. Recent studies have shown there is no evidence that oil production is harming the county’s groundwater supply. However, oil companies recognize they have a role to play in reducing the carbon emissions that are

contributing to climate change. Oil producers who convert crude oil to fuel are major participants in California’s cap and trade program, one of the most progressive programs aimed at reducing GHG emissions in the world. The oil industry also recognizes the realities we face as a highly mobile society that depends on a great deal of energy in our daily lives. While the industry continues to look for ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it is clear that fossil fuels – oil and natural gas for example – are going to continue to provide the majority of that energy for many decades to come. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s annual forecast of energy demand in the United States estimates that by 2040 – 25 years from today – fossil fuels will continue to supply 80 percent of the nation’s energy needs. This estimation assumes a doubling of the role that solar energy and biofuels play in that energy portfolio.

Despite a strong domestic oil production industry, California still needs more oil than we produce in the state – lots more oil. Today, California produces just 38 percent of the oil we need to keep our state’s economy thriving. We import 62 percent of the rest – 10 percent from Alaska and 52 percent from foreign countries like Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Ecuador, among many others. This demand for petroleum energy makes home-grown sources of oil important for many reasons. They provide California a degree of energy security – protection against the disruptions in imported supply caused by war, weather or geopolitics. The stability they provide helps moderate volatility in fuel costs for consumers when market disruptions occur. This also means that our oil is produced by California workers using the best environmental practices and under the strictest environmental regulations in the world. What that means for Ventura County is clear. This region, and the resources it is blessed with, will continue to contribute to California’s energy security and well-being for many years to come. The men and women of the oil industry are proud of the role they play in the future of energy.

805 STARTUPS GROWING THE LOCAL TECH COMMUNITY By Alan Goren, Founder & CEO, 805 Startups

e live in a time when geographic location means less and less to a business owner, especially in tech. You can easily run an online, international business out of your home. Even so, the perception is that if you aren’t launching your tech startup out of one of the world’s top tech hubs, it’s going to be an uphill battle and you’re not going to be successful. It is assumed that hiring engineers, designers, salespeople and other talent who have a core understanding of the industry will be tough. It is believed that investors will be harder to come by, and getting the attention of a non-local investor will be difficult. That might be the common perception, but it is very far from the truth. There are advantages and disadvantages to both sides of this premise and we could easily argue both, but there’s no need because we win no matter what. Why? Because we live in the 805. We get the best of both worlds. 16 | ConejoView

For the second year in a row, the tech community in Los Angeles, or Silicon Beach as it is nicknamed, has been ranked the third best startup ecosystem in the world, according to Compass’ Global Startup Ecosystem rankings. The rankings are based on various criteria such as access to capital, talent and of course, performance. LA was only beaten out by Silicon Valley and Tel Aviv. One of my biggest pet peeves used to be when a great company from the 805 got lumped in as an LA-based company. For example, when Lynda.com recently sold to LinkedIn for $1.5 billion, many reported it as “Los Angeles-based Lynda.com sells…” Not really that huge of a deal, but I find myself constantly defending this area to folks who feel they don’t have a choice but to relocate. Most don’t even realize that many great startups call this area home and many great success stories they have heard about were from this area. Did you realize Lynda.com came out of Ojai and Carpinteria? Did you realize that Estify is based in Agoura Hills? Clutter, whose founder is based in Westlake Village and Trackr

Since we can’t always take the time to travel and meet that special someone face-to-face, this is where technology can bridge the gap between the school and employer. For example, create a local YouTube channel with short videos showcasing job opportunities, mini virtual training modules or Skype with students in real time.

The talent I observed here has the potential to serve a multitude of industries. So how do schools and employers make connections to tap into the potential? In a previous school district where I worked, local Chamber of Commerce members invested in an inexpensive online data warehouse where employers advertised experiences they could offer to students and teachers, and schools could post their

Everyone likes incentives, especially those with low or no cost. Employee wellness programs could provide release time for community projects, allowing workers to visit schools or host students. For students who successfully complete internship experiences, why not offer a preferred applicant status that guarantees an interview? In turn, CVUSD could give participating employers Talent Spot Passes for entry into athletics and performing arts events. Summer externships for teachers to assist local businesses could count for continuing education credit. These are just some ideas of how we can form partnerships that take talent spotting in the Conejo Valley to a new level! We are a vibrant community dedicated to the workforce of the future. What businesses need to know about

EMV Technology

early every small business has come to the realization that credit card processing is an essential part of running their business. In the United States, the credit card processing equipment that merchants use is designed for traditional swipeand-sign credit cards that have a magnetic stripe. Consumers swipe the card and data about their account is fed to the merchant they are making a purchase from. However, with EMV technology now entering the United States, magnetic stripes will eventually be a thing of the past. Named after the original organizations that created the international standard for smart credit cards with a built-in chip – Europay, MasterCard and Visa – the EMV technology isn’t new, and it has already replaced magnetic strip cards in many other countries.

With this technology, consumers will now be inserting their card into a slot and the machine will read a microchip, instead of swiping a magnetic stripe. EMV is quickly becoming standard in the United States which is actually the last major market to utilize the technology. The transition is being made because the swipe-and-sign system is a large contributor to credit card fraud in the United States. As with the integration of any new technology, however, rumors and misconceptions are raging around EMV. Many businesses contemplating the switch to EMV technology have questions surrounding the migration to chip cards. This article will provide insight to business owners regarding the three most commonly raised questions about EMV.

What is EMV? EMV is a payment method in which an integrated circuit chip (ICC) has been embedded into the plastic credit or debit card. The ICC replaces the magnetic stripe on the card, holding the account number and other sensitive data. It also contains the logic needed for both transaction processing and risk management. These new “smart credit cards” are safer than the magnetic stripe used until now in the United States. With the magnetic stripe, criminals can pull credit card numbers and expiration dates to make counterfeit cards. The ICC assigns a unique code for every transaction made by the card. Even if a thief captures the code, it can’t be used to make another purchase.

Is EMV going to be the standard for credit card processing in the United States? The simplest answer is: eventually. By 2016, 90 percent of U.S. credit and debit cards will be EMV enabled. However, many people, especially consumers, do not yet know that EMV has arrived and that the United States is rapidly moving from magnetic stripe to EMV chip-based payment cards. As such, it may take some time to switch 100 percent to EMV technology.

Why should I upgrade my processing/POS systems now? At this point, all cards issued will still maintain the standard magnetic stripe that carries card holder secure data. Soon, however, there will come a point in time that businesses will no longer be able to process “swipe-and-sign” transactions in the United States and will have no choice but to upgrade to EMV equipment. Upgrading is really not a choice – it is simply a matter of timing. The conversion to an EMV chip-enabled card is going to be an evolution and dramatic change in how we, as a country, do business. Given all the complexities that need to be addressed

by all the concerned parties – the issuing card banks, processors and merchants – there is no way for a card issuer today to issue a card that is only EMV chip enabled. Until the vast majority of merchants upgrade their equipment, the number of establishments that the card holder can use the card will be limited to those that have adopted chip technology hardware. The faster merchants upgrade their equipment, the less the need for a mag stripe on new cards and the sooner, and easier, the transition to EMV processing will be. So, the “greater good” is that every merchant upgrades their equipment as soon as possible. Having said this, the question should really be: “what are my risk factors” when it comes to the liability that a merchant processing a counterfeit, lost or stolen card may face?” October 1, 2015 was the date for what is referred to as the “liability shift.” This means that if there is an incidence of credit card fraud, the merchant may now bear the liability. So, if a merchant is still using the old system after October 1, 2015, they can still run a transaction with a swipe and a signature, but they may be liable for any fraudulent transactions if the customer has a chip card. And the same goes the other way – if the merchant has new processing equipment, but the bank hasn’t issued a chip and PIN card to the customer, the bank may be liable. In principle, whoever is less EMV-ready may bear the burden of risk. The key to the liability shift is really to have issuers and merchants investing at the same time to drive fraud out of the system, rather than shifting it within the system. Positive Intent | Healthy Results Q&A With Natalie Mussi, CEO, Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center ConejoView: Tell us about your background. Natalie Mussi: Senior year of college, I took a few health administration classes and realized that was a better fit than medical school. It challenged the business side of my brain while being in a people-oriented setting. I applied for graduate school programs that offered Masters in Health Administration and have been working in health administration ever since. CV: What keeps you up at night? NM: Making sure we are staying ahead of all of the changes in health care to ensure we have a growing medical center, a great place to work and an excellent place for our community to receive care. CV: What are your top goals for Los Robles Hospital in 2016? NM: Continuous quality and patient safety focus; best-in-class patient experience; providing differentiating services. CV: When you interview a job candidate, what qualities must they have to be hired? NM: We look for a good cultural fit; people who are passionate about patient care and who share the vision and behavior expectations we have for all members of our Los Robles team. CV: Who are Los Robles Hospital’s competitors? NM: With the landscape of health care evolving at a rapid pace, a hospital’s competitor is no longer just the hospital down the street. It is outpatient clinics, ambulatory surgery centers and spitals outside of its region.

CV: Tell us your personal strengths. NM: People-oriented; multi-tasker; strategic thinker. CV: Who are your role models? NM: My parents raised four children and set a strong example for us. They led us to believe we could do anything if we put our mind to it. My mentor, Bryan Rogers, showed me that to be successful in business you need a strong team. The leader’s role is to bring out the best in those they work with and have the right people in the right roles. CV: What has been the impact of the Affordable Health Care Act on Los Robles? NM: Spending more time helping patients understand their benefits. Our efforts have resulted in Los Robles being a Joint Commission Top Performing Hospital. CV: How do you unwind? NM: I have two beautiful daughters (with a third child due in February) and a wonderful husband. We enjoy the beach, movies or just hanging out at home. They always put a smile on my face. CV: What is the best advice you’ve ever been given? NM: Surround yourself with good people. Assume positive intent. CV: What is the biggest challenge facing doctors today? NM: Balancing the business challenges of health care with the time needed to provide high-quality care to their patients.

s a Certified Financial Planner with a wide variety of competition, many people have asked me how I built my business. Early in my career, I found that in order to be successful I needed to develop solid relationships with key members of the community. The practice that I have established would not have been possible without these relationships. I now give back to the community that has made the growth of my business possible by teaching the Networking Prep Class at the Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce. The following are some tips that I have found helpful and that you may want to consider when networking. 30 | ConejoView

ESSENTIAL NETWORKING TIPS

DEFINE A NICHE

A skin care professional once attended my class. When asked who her ideal client was she said, “anyone with a face.” This gave me very little criteria on which to base a referral. It is important to have a clearly defined target audience for your business. In this case, a specific target audience could include teenagers struggling with acne, new mothers, or maybe young adults aged 18 to 27. The goal is to give others an idea as to what type of person would be interested in your business, and who specifically they may refer to you.

PREPARING FOR A MIXER

Some examples of things you need to bring to a mixer include: a Sharpie pen, a professional name tag, at least 20 business cards and your calendar. I do not recommend bringing promotional materials to the event, remember, you are there to build relationships, not to close a deal. I also encourage networking event attendees to place their name tag on their right side so that people will be able to read it easily. At events you’ll often receive 20-plus business cards. In order to keep track of whom you spoke to, I recommend writing a quick note on the back of each person’s business card for reference (that’s where the Sharpie comes in!).

PREPARE AN ELEVATOR SPEECH

The elusive elevator speech is a term coined by the timing of an average elevator ride. You should be able to convey what makes you or your business unique within 30 seconds. First of all, include your name, title, business name and location. The purpose of your speech is to communicate who you are, what you are looking for and what you have to offer. The most important factor is giving your audience a reason to listen. For instance, think of a time when you or your business stood out from the rest or a time when you upheld your values or goals when encountered with a challenge. The objective here is to hook the listener and motivate them to ask questions. Practice your speech out loud in front of the mirror, and practice it often. You want your speech to sound natural, so get comfortable with what you plan to say and think about how you will alter it depending on who the listener is. Don’t forget to mention that you are a Chamber member. Reminding others that you are part of this great organization may give others more reason to support you.

BE AN ACTIVE LISTENER

I have found that being an active listener in all aspects of life can result in unexpected and rewarding circumstances. When I take

the time to listen to others and be fully present in the things going on around me, I discover opportunities that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. It is important to always be open to new information or ideas that have the potential to help you or your business grow.

FIND A NETWORKING GROUP

BE RELIABLE

MAKE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

There are a variety of networking groups that cater to specific interests. Visit as many groups as possible until you find the group that you connect with most. Once you find your group, attend consistently, participate in special events and volunteer for available positions. Members who stay active in the group are the ones who benefit the most. In the early stages of my career, I created a group called the Nightlife Networkers because I knew that I would need a team of great people and trustworthy advisors to help me build my clientele. Our networking group met twice a month, which was just enough for us to thrive as a group while maintaining our busy schedules.

Always follow through with referrals quickly and efficiently. When someone sends you a referral, your actions are a reflection on them. Honor that and people will be more likely to continue to support you. Most importantly, always thank others for their help and do your best to return the favor.

Having a Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, or Instagram can be a useful tool in building relationships with people in your community and in your field; and it’s free! Millions of internet users browse social media on a daily basis all over the world. Think of how many more people you could easily connect with by simply creating a profile for yourself or your business. Take advantage of this opportunity! The relationships that I have built through networking have had an extraordinary impact on my professional development. But – like a healthy eating plan – it takes time, effort, and dedication to yield results. If you are dedicated to making networking part of your practice, you will certainly reap the benefits.

Havasi Wilderness Foundation Reconnecting the Community with Nature

ounded in 2008, Havasi Wilderness Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to heightening awareness and appreciation of the natural environment. After spending years traveling the world, founders Marilyn and Sandor noticed how many parts of the world are suffering from air and water pollution as well as over population. Together they established Havasi Wilderness Foundation with the mission of educating the general public about the importance of protecting and preserving the natural ecosystems. As Sandor Havasi put it, residents of the Conejo Valley are surrounded by the wilderness but many of them donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take the time to really experience it. Either they were never exposed to it as a child or they became too busy in their adult lives to appreciate and respect it. To help bring awareness of the natural environment, Havasi Wilderness Foundation has created outreach programs focused on teaching classrooms, youth groups, senior homes and other organizations about their local wildlife. In addition to these educational presentations, Sandor and Marilyn have also started leading hiking groups into the local mountains to encourage children and adults to step outside and see the beautiful wilderness that surrounds them. Although Sandor and Marilyn set out to retire, their passion for the environment quickly became a full-time job. By providing

grants they have found themselves working with and donating funds to large organizations such as the California Science Center, California State University Channel Islands and the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains. These grants help fund natural history field trips for schools and other groups including visits to state parks, national parks, wildlife refuges, museums and more. HWF website, www.havasiwf.org, is also a great resource featuring regular blog posts, educational games and a soon to be virtual field designed for individuals with disabilities who are unable to hike in the local mountains. Through their educational outreach programs, grants and online experience, Havasi Wilderness Foundation is dedicated to bringing people to nature, but also bringing nature to people. It is their hope that by establishing an individualâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s relationship with the environment, that person will walk away with a greater understanding and respect for their surroundings and ultimately serve to protect and preserve some of the Earthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most precious places for future generations.
