The opening session, where village nurses did health screenings and an introductory survey was conducted, was held at the library. Most of the succeeding sessions were held at the District 214 Continuing Education facility at the Forest View Educational Center and then the final session was held at the Arlington Heights Park District’s Camelot Park. All facilities were provided free and District 214 handled the registration process, collecting the nominal $10 fee so that everyone would have a stake in participating. “By meeting in different locations and providing a wide variety of presenters each week, we expanded the group’s exposure to local offerings. We had everyone from nutritionists offering information on what to eat and how to prepare it, to personal trainers offering fitness assessments.

Participants received access to some very expensive evaluations as well as programs like Zumba and Pilates,” Camardella said. “By giving them an exposure to a wide range of programs and ideas, each person had the opportunity to see what works for them personally.” Health has many facets from the state of the physical body, to the mental psyche, to relationships, and interconnections within a community and the larger world. It is the mission of the group to build relationships, educate residents, and also inspire them to prioritize health in their lives by starting to make small or large healthy changes, she added.
