Like it or not, it sounds like we will be spending a lot of time alone or with our dear families as we work from home or stay in on weekends and evenings. Some good will come out of this, as it does in all emergencies.We will learn about new innovations and efficiencies.We will learn things that we didn’t readily know.We will better appreciate things we generally had taken for granted. We don’t know how long before our world, our culture, goes back to normal, or if we even will go back to that old “normal” but a NEW normal could be wonderful. Until then: Beware. Be smart.Wash your hands with warm water for at least 20 seconds. Don’t forget to oil your hands so they don’t get too dry. Eat well; keep the kitchen well stocked with the necessities and your favorites.Think of others, as well, as you shop…supplies will be there! Bump. Change. Change and bump until we can hug again.

Sus diferentes tipos provocan distintas enfermedades, desde un resfriado hasta un síndrome respiratorio grave (una forma grave de neumonía). Gran parte de los coronavirus no son peligrosos y se pueden tratar de forma e$ca'. !e hecho, la mayoría de las personas contraen en algún momento de su vida un coronavirus, generalmente durante su infancia. Aunque son más frecuentes en otoño o invierno, se pueden adquirir en cualquier época del año. El coronavirus debe su nombre al aspecto que presenta, ya que es muy parecido a una corona o un halo. En los últimos años se han descrito tres brotes epidémicos importantes causados por coronavirus: SRAS-CoV: El síndrome respiratorio agudo y grave (SRAS, también conocido como SARS y SRAG) se inició en noviembre de 2002 en China, afectó a más de 8.000 personas en 37 países y provocó más de 700 muertes. La mortalidad del SRAS-Cov se ha cifrado en el 10% aproximadamente. MERS-CoV: El coronavirus causante del síndrome respiratorio de Oriente Medio (MERS) fue detectado por primera ve' en 2012 en Arabia Saudita. COVID-19: A $nales de diciembre de 201( se noti$caron los primeros casos de un nuevo coronavirus en la ciudad de Wuhan (China). !esde entonces el goteo de nuevos infectados por el virus SARS-CoV-2 (inicialmente llamado 201(nCoV), que provoca el COV&!-1(, ha sido continuo y su transmisión de persona a persona se ha acelerado. Los casos declarados de nemonía de Wuhan ya superan con creces a los de la epidemia de SRAS, pero la tasa de letalidad es más baja. Los coronavirus se transmiten de forma limitada entre humanos, pero hasta la fecha se desconoce el origen de estos virus. En todo caso, se sabe que ciertos animales, como los murciélagos, actúan como reservorios. Como en otros virus que causan neumonía, cuando se transmiten en humanos, el contagio se produce generalmente por vía respiratoria, a través de las gotitas respiratorias que las personas producen cuando tosen, estornudan o al hablar. Es conveniente lavarse las manos con frecuencia y evitar el contacto con personas ya infectadas, protegiendo especialmente ojos, nari' y boca. A las personas infectadas (o que crean que pueden estarlo) se les aconseja el uso de mascarillas y usar pañuelos para cubrirse la nari' y la boca cuando se tose o se estornuda. Las medidas preventivas deben seguirlas especialmente aquellas personas que pade'can diabetes, insu$ciencia renal, neumopatía crónica o inmunodepresión, ya que tienen más riesgo de padecer enfermedad grave en caso de infección por coronavirus.

Back home in the suburbs, college students face uncertainties over online learning BY ELENA FERRARIN

First came the excitement about a prolonged vacation. Then reality set in. How is online learning going to play out, especially for classes that require hands-on work? What about group presentations? How will I handle it all? Will my grades suffer? Those are some of the questions troubling 20-year-old Justin Ethithara of Des Plaines and other suburban college students whose schools have closed or canceled in-person classes in the face of the new coronavirus outbreak. Their lives upended, students are finding themselves back home in the suburbs, with no guarantees about when life will go back to normal. Ethithara, a sophomore at Marquette University in Milwaukee, was on spring break last week when he learned the time off would be extended by a week and after that he’d continue classes online until April 10. Marquette students could go back to school only during the day Sunday to pick up their belongings. “At first I was super excited because I loved the idea of having an extended spring break, but then I realized what was going to happen,” he said. “I know it’s really hard to focus here at home. Mentally, I want to be on spring break. Now, I am kind of worried my grades are going to kind of slip down.” Michigan State University student Erika Christensen came back to her hometown of Naperville on March 12, a day after students were told all classes would be held online until April 20. No in-person meetings would be permitted in the meantime. Students are not required to leave campus, but were strongly encouraged to do so. Christensen, a computer science major, had a cold, so she figured she’d head home and leave the dorm room to her roommate, a native of Wyoming who was planning to stay. Christensen said she’s taken some online classes previously, but not an entire semester load. “You have to tell yourself, ‘I’m not going to jeopardize my grade just because I’m home,’” she said. “You want to be able to say, ‘I know this material.’” Madison Knott of Elgin, a 19-year-old sophomore at Indiana University, was scheduled to go on spring break Monday. Students were informed last week the school would close and they could not return to campus until April 6, she said. Starting March 23, classes will take place online via web conferencing, she said. The move was not unexpected, particularly after

Ohio State University and others announced closures, Knott said. Despite having taken several classes online in the past, Knott is worried about how she will tackle that now. She’s an interior design major and only two of her five classes are in lecture format, she said. The other
three are studio or lab classes, relying on in-person work such as 3-D designs, paper making and the like. “I’m more worried about my grades,” Knott said. “Lectures are a lot easier, you watch and take notes. It’s a lot harder when you have lab.”
Still, some have it worse, she said, like some fellow students who went back to California and will have to start some classes at 5 a.m., which is 8 a.m. in Indiana. Ashia Walker, 19, of Elgin, said she plans to come home from Loyola University Chicago early this week. The sophomore economics major was shocked to find out March 5 that the campus would be closing and students had to pack and be out by Thursday. She’s never taken online classes and has lots of uncertainties about how that will happen. “Many of the professors were kind of confused about what mode they would go with. Do they do PowerPoint and do voice-overs, or have a video and send it out so we could watch it anytime?” But she, too, is keeping things in perspective. It’s an inconvenience to have to move out of her dorm room but international students have it much worse, she said, having to figure out if they can go home or where to stay otherwise. There are other things the students will miss out on. Christensen is in the marching band at Michigan State and sings with the women’s Glee Club, but all performances have been canceled, all the more disappointing because the school was celebrating its 150th anniversary of the band program, she said. “A lot of us are really bummed, but we also keep a sense of humor about it,” she said. Ethithara had been choreographing a dance for the annual Indian Student Association show in about two weeks, while also working with others to finish a robotic arm by the end of the semester. Walker isn’t sure if she can keep her work-study job as an administrative aide for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Loyola University won’t pay her salary while the school is closed, she said. The archdiocese offered to pay her, but she’s not sure about the scheduling and format of her online classes, and whether she can tackle the commute to Chicago, she said. The students did agree about one thing: they are not too concerned about being sickened by COVID-19. Knott and her parents planned to leave Saturday for spring break in Arizona, where they were to meet relatives from Iowa. She did have some worry about her grandparents in Elgin, knowing the disease is more serious for older people, she said. “I am not that worried about it because it doesn’t really affect younger people,” Ethithara said. “You can’t really do anything about it except being careful ourselves -- and hoping for the best.”

Community colleges: The best kept secret for business owners and employers.
If you’re a business owner or manager, get the inside scoop on a best kept secret: your local community college. When I needed help with my personal business more than a decade ago, I came upon the College of Lake County. The training its Workforce & Professional Development Institute experts provided was tailored to specific needs and surpassed my expectations, while remaining affordable. I was so impressed with CLC, I joined the WPDI team a ERIC KURTZ few years later. When my wife and I purchased a second business, I learned about financing options from the Illinois Small Business Development Center at CLC. Their instructions helped us successfully secure business and commercial real estate loans. As a past customer and a talent development professional, I have yet to find another resource better than a community college that offers a broad range of expertise through training, coaching and consulting focused on supporting entrepreneurs, business owners and employers. For decades, community colleges have helped entrepreneurs and employers develop their skills and business acumen. Their services range from skill assessments, training development, public workshops, small group coaching and both online and face-to-face learning solutions. To best serve the community, college programs range from financial acumen and software applications to management and strategic planning.
In addition, community colleges offer programs to develop the technical skills for businesses, including real estate, truck driver, home and building inspection, home staging and pharmacy technician training. If an employer requires positions with professional certifications, related workshops and test prep classes can often be found at community colleges, too. Community colleges have programs that carry federal and state designations requiring adherence to quality standards. Some examples include project management programs taught by certified Project Management Professionals using Project Management Institute curriculum. Many local community colleges are also approved Illinois Small Business Development and International Trade Centers that help educate business owners with advising and training solutions at little or no cost. I know from experience that talent development vendors are often selected based on name recognition or price. Your local community college may not yet have name recognition in the talent development space, but you should know it has both current and lengthy experience in talent development that rivals what can be found in a Fortune 500 company. In many cases, facilitators used by national training houses, big named institutions and
Fortune 500s are the same facilitators community colleges are using, minus the high overhead and sales commissions. Community colleges may not always be the cheapest game in town, but offer great value. Furthermore, community colleges are partnered with local Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act grant holders who can provide funding for many talent development needs of business owners and employers. In addition to talent development services, community colleges offer businesses even more services. These include finding candidates for jobs, hiring student interns, hosting apprenticeships and participation in job fairs. Closing your skill gaps and the skill gaps of your employees is one of the biggest challenges in our current economy. According to the 2019 22nd Annual Global CEO Survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers on the subject of how skills gaps hurt business, the top four impacts CEOs identified included: • Unable to innovate effectively • People costs rising more than expected • Quality standards/customer experience affected • Unable to pursue a market opportunity Community colleges are standing by to help you overcome such obstacles. Based on my personal and professional experience, I highly recommend you get to know the part of your community college that works with entrepreneurs and employers. From COD to Science Teacher
Chemistry was not always one of Daniel Fernandez’s favorite sciences. He found it difficult and intimidating, but the more he exposed himself to it, the more he started to enjoy it. His love of chemistry continued at College of DuPage when he worked as part of a team using short-pulse lasers, advanced microscopes and computers to understand what drives the biological functions of proteins and other molecules. After finishing his coursework at COD, Fernandez transferred to the Illinois Institute of Technology and earned a master’s degree in Science Education. He is currently teaching science at Addison Trail High School and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. “I took what I learned at College of DuPage and applied it to the rest of my education. Inmigrantes afectados por el COVID-19 pueden recibir asistencia pública sin que afecte el trámite de residencia permanente Billy Trainor Fronteras de la Notiica - EFE l Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración (USCIS) aclaró que la regla de “carga pública” no aplica para quienes reciban asistencia pública o servicios de salud relacionados con el coronavirus, por lo que exhortó a los inmigrantes que presenten síntomas buscar atención médica de inmediato y sin temor a ser sancionados. La regla de “carga pública”, que entró en vigor el pasado 24 de febrero, es una más de las políticas implementadas por la adminitración del presidente Donald Trump para restringir la inmigración a Estados Unidos al negar la residencia permanente o “green card” a quienes durante cierto tiempo hayan recibido asistencia pública, como cupones de alimentos, subsidios de vivienda o servicios de salud de Medicaid. Pero ante la emergencia de salud por la pandemia, el gobierno federal aseguró que recibir tratamiento o servicios preventivos por el coronavirus no afectará en el trámite de la residencia permanente bajo la nueva norma. USCIS reconoció que algunos inmigrantes pudieran sentirse temerosos de ser sancionados en su trámite migratorio y por ello no busquen atención médica en caso de presentar los síntomas del COVID-19. Por ello recalcó que no considerarán las pruebas, el tratamiento o la atención preventiva relacionada con el virus para determinar la elegibilidad del inmigrante en las solicitudes de residencia permanente. Los que no puedan ir a trabajar o asistir a la escuela y requieran de la asistencia pública durante la epidemia y el período de recuperación, pueden recibir los bene#cios y posteriormente presentar una explicación y documentos que estos se tomarán en consideración.

Questions in the Census are related to age, sex, ethnicity of each person living in a residence, how those people are related, and whether the residence is owned or rented. Considerado el mejor de la historia de la especialidad, en 2004 fue la sensación de los Juegos Olímpicos de Atenas y ya en los de Pekín 2008 superó el mítico récord de Mark Spitz, al obtener ocho medallas de oro frente a las siete que su compatriota había conquistado en los Juegos Olímpicos de Munich (1972). Tras ganar en 2012 otras seis medallas en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres, Michael Phelps se convirtió en el deportista más laureado de la historia de los juegos. Phelps anunció entonces su retirada, pero dos años después regresó a las competiciones para preparar su quinta participación olímpica en Río de Janeiro (2016), donde coronó su trayectoria con otros seis metales y elevó su palmarés a niveles apenas concebibles: 28 medallas olímpicas, 23 de ellas de oro. Para apreciar la magnitud del logro basta descender un puesto en el escalafón: el segundo deportista más premiado en los juegos es la gimnasta soviética Larisa Latynina, que entre 1956 y 1964 consiguió «solamente» 18 medallas. Michael Phelps nació el 30 de junio de 1985 en Baltimore, Maryland, en el seno de una familia de clase media muy deportista. Después de practicar desde muy pequeño algunos deportes típicos de Estados Unidos (béisbol y fútbol americano), comenzó a nadar a los siete años, espoleado por sus hermanas, Hilary y Whitney; esta última fue campeona de Estados Unidos de los 200 metros mariposa en 1994, pero una lesión de espalda la obligó a una retirada prematura. Aunque el pequeño Michael le tenía miedo al agua, en su biografía explica que se refugió en las piscinas para no oír las discusiones entre sus padres, que poco después se divorciarían. A los once años se cruzó en su vida el técnico Bow Bowman, quien pronto se

Aquel año, en el Mundial de Barcelona, se reveló al mundo como el nadador con mayor proyección de la historia, al ganar, con apenas dieciocho años y a título individual, tres medallas de oro: 200 metros mariposa, prueba en la que en semi%nales batió el récord del mundo (1 minuto 53,93 segundos), 200 metros estilos (1 minuto 56,04 segundos, récord del mundo) y 400 metros estilos (4 minutos 9,09 segundos, récord del mundo). A esos títulos sumó la medalla de plata en 100 metros mariposa; en las semi%nales de esta prueba había batido también el récord del mundo (51,10 segundos), pero en la %nal fue superado por el mejor nadador de este estilo, su compatriota Ian Crocker. Local agency uses technology to help problem gamblers during COVID-19 crisis At times of stress and crisis, those struggling with gambling problems and other addictions may experience relapse triggers. Financial concerns due to lost wages can increase urges to gamble. Those practicing social distancing may turn to online gambling. Nicasa will pay for a program that blocks online gambling, for any Nicasa client. Nicasa offers free counseling, in-person or using telehealth (phone or video counseling). Nicasa is using technology to share information about problem gambling. At a time when those struggling with gambling problems need help the most, support and other resources are being affected by concerns related to COVID-19. Though casinos and video gaming establishments have closed, gamblers still have access to other forms of gambling, and online gambling may be a particular risk, as individuals practice social distancing. Nicasa is here to help. Free consultations are available by phone or live video chat. Those engaging in gambling counseling will also be offered a one-year subscription to
a program that blocks online gambling. March is National Problem Gambling Awareness Month. But due to COVID-19, most public awareness events have been postponed or canceled. Nicasa will, therefore, offer free workshops via web conferencing to interested groups. We are also posting short video clips and other posts on social media, regarding various subjects related to problem gambling, so information can be shared remotely. Ayer en medio de los rumores, ambos actores reconocieron que están pasando por una crisis y que en efecto, su relación de pareja está en pausa pero no así su relación de amistad.. Su discurso, más allá de aclarar las especulaciones, fue un mani"esto de algo que nos cuesta mucho trabajo reconocer: que a veces el amor se acaba, que ese amor que idealizamos y que incluso alimentamos simplemente ya no está o se transformó. Sin embargo, antes de que todo ese amor erótico se termine y dejemos de compartir momentos de intimidad, hay algo que queda y que nadie puede borrar; eso que como pareja construyes con quien en algún momento te robó el aliento. Si bien es muy difícil aceptar que algo que pensamos in"nito ya no va también y simplemente se lo comió la rutina, recono-
cer que el amor se trasforma es un lección que esta pareja nos dejó. Quizás esa ilusión que conocemos como amor romántico sea un pedestal duro de sostener, pues la individualidad debería ser en todo momento la prioridad de cada uno de nosotros, depositar el amor que puedas tenerte en otra persona termina por desgastar cualquier tipo de relación que tengas con el otro. No importa si hay hijos, si hay casa, no importa tampoco el perro o si hubo una historia de las mal llamadas 'parejas perfectas', terminar una relación llevándote lo mejor de ésta es también un acto de valentía y todos deberíamos reconocerlo. Aunque Aisllin y Mauricio dejaron claro que intentaran reparar lo que algún día tuvieron, también cabe la posibilidad de que no se arregle, sin duda dolerá, pero no tanto como mantenerte en un relación donde no hay nada más que ofrecer. Alguna vez una amiga muy sabia me dijo que el amor es como un frasco de mermelada que cuando caduca, hay que ir por otro a la tienda porque nadie quiere tener algo echado a perder en su casa.
