LEEDS 2023 Directors Interview

Page 1

Will Baldwin-Pask Thanks for tuning in to another episode of the state of the art podcast. This is the first one we've done for a while, but it is a special one. In this episode, we're turning our attention to Leeds which has just been through its year of culture. The organisation behind the Year of Culture is LEEDS 2023. And I was lucky enough to sit down with Kully Thiarai, CEO and creative director of LEEDS 2023 and Emma Beverley, Director of Programming. A bit of context first, back in 2017, Leeds' bid to be the European Capital of Culture was rejected, along with all UK cities after we left the EU, the bid organisers, the council and many others in the city decided they delivered their own 12 month Festival of Arts and Culture in 2023. Only without the budget or the frameworks that come with being a European capital or UK city of culture, planned during a pandemic and carried out in a time of huge economic uncertainty. The Year of Culture provided a mixture of self produced events, community engagement projects, and partnerships with creatives from Leeds and around the world. Now, I actually worked in the LEEDS 2023 team for part of the delivery year, and I got to see the challenges and the successes of the projects up close. But not everyone will know what went on behind the scenes in 2023. So in this episode, we'll find out from Kully and Emma, what challenges they faced, why they made the decisions they made, and what a year of culture might mean for the city. Especially thank you to Eiger studios for hosting us. And I hope you enjoy listening back to this episode of steady arts podcast. So I'm delighted to have with me today, Kully and Emma, who were the directors of LEEDS 2023, the Year of Culture. The first question I really want to ask is probably the most important, which is, how are you? Kully Thiarai Well, I always say I'm still standing, and I'm still smiling, and we still got lots to do. So I'm fine. About you, Emma. Emma Beverley I relieved, a bit tired. And just excited really about what comes next. It's quite strange having your kind of sole focus on something for so long, and then for it to be done. So I don't know, maybe ask me in like six months? Kully Thiarai Well, you've had a longer journey with it than me, haven't you? Because you were part of the original bid programme. So Emma Beverley yeah, like lots of different people in the city when the city said back in 2014 2015. Should we bid? There are a number of us who that was the kind of first moment that we started to get get involved in it. So yeah, it's been quite the ride. Will Baldwin-Pask Well that'd be good to hear from both of you, actually. What was your entrance point into the Year of culture? So you obviously would have had connections with Leeds? And then how does that transition into overseeing a project of this size?
